    So many complicated tutorials. In the end I just thought ''fk it, I'll find out myself'', and this is how I did it:
    1st part:(Skip this part if you're aware of the basics of the game)
    - Before launching, attach Thrusters to the side of your spaceshuttle.
    - Right-click on your spacestation (or whatever you want to dock at) and set it as your target.
    - Orbit the planet at about the same height as your spacestation; it's ok to be far off the spacestation, as long as you're not falling back down to the planet.
    - Timewarp until you get close to your spacestation. It does not matter if you're like 100 miles away from it.
    2nd part:(only read this part if you're aware of the basics of the game)
    - Set your RCS and SAS on ''target''. And just launch yourself towards the target. If you get close (within a few miles) or if you fly past your target, set your RCS and SAS to ''retrograde'' until your orbital speed is around 0 m/s.
    - Rinse and repeat until you're docked.
    THAT IS ALL! All you have to do is: fly towards your target and retrograde if you get close or fly past it and repeat the process until you're docked.
    It's great that so many people are making (complicated) guides for this but it's really only 2 buttons you have to be aware of.
    Using my strategy it nowadays only takes me mere minutes from launch to docking to get it all done.

      I can see how you found this method to be easier than what it displayed in Scott's tutorial. However' I've been playing this every other day for years now, and your method confuses me and seems rather challenging while Scott's seems to be the easiest and less tedious. It's interesting how we all learn things differently.

    Instead of going into the same 120 km orbit directly, you could have also gone into a lower orbit (say 80 - 100 km) to catch up to the station. It's a slightly more efficient alternative to going up 120, circularizing, and then burning retro, then burning prograde to make the rendezvous.
    Just a an alternative. =)

    • @blizzy78
      @blizzy78 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it really simplify things? A Hohmann transfer to the target is not much harder.

    • @scottmanley
      @scottmanley  10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      blizzy1978 It follows a step by step process - do something, wait, do something else. Breaking it down into steps is a good way to teach.
      As for a hohmann transfer, that requires powers of 3/2, while this, at most requires multiplying by the number 7.

    • @quantitasletalis7428
      @quantitasletalis7428 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh yeah, I understand that this is for new players and I'm certainly not saying you did it wrong.
      My purpose in mentioning that was simply to point out to new players that it's not *necessary* to reach the same orbital altitude first. I see that done in so many videos I feel like it's an assumption that gets learned and never broken.
      Love the videos, keep them coming!

    I pussied out on rendezvous for the longest time, it's one of the biggest learning hurdles in KSP. But when you learn it, it's hella fun to mess around with it. Here's a basic step by step:
    1.) Make sure your intercept ship has quite a bit of fuel, rendezvous can be pretty consuming.
    2.) Launch your intercept ship in a lower orbit than your target
    > I've been told to launch when the target is near KSC, but i found out that it won't matter much, you can still make a good rendezvous.
    3.) Select your target ship and click Set as Target.
    4.) Click on either the ascending or descending node. Make a maneuver node, messing around with the Normal and Anti-normal (up and down in the maneuver node widget) till both your AN/DN are 0.0 degrees. Burn.
    5.) Make a prograde maneuver to match your apoapsis with the target's orbit. You should be getting intercept nodes. Burn.
    6.) Mess around with the prograde and retrograde to get a close intercept. Target position and intercept ship position are indicated by either purple or orange arrows. 1-3 km separation is acceptable. Burn. The arrows should be closer now.
    7.) Click on the intercept arrows to find out your relative velocity. You can make a retrograde maneuver, but it's less confusing to eyeball and kill relative velocity.
    8.) Now with you close to your target with low relative velocity, you can now mess around with your engines and RCS thrusters to maneuver towards your target ship. Target and Anti-target SAS functions should help you out, especially in docking.

    Summary: Get into an orbit close to target orbit. Perform manoeuvre to line up.Set as target. Burn prograde at apoapsis and periapsis if in front of target, Retrograde at apoapsis and periapsis if target is in front (Do it about 10,000km from target(or maybe closer?))Be PATIENT and let craft speed up or slow down depending on your position in relation to the target. Once craft to be docked to is close gently ease in with RCS. DOCK!

    • @TheSatanicGamerFromHell
      @TheSatanicGamerFromHell 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kierankay100 i'm not gonna judge you're english but, you are right it is very hard this is probably the hardest feature in the game i spent a good amount of hours until i finished the docking tutorial and then i made my own scenario in my world where i had a fuel tank and i am trying to dock a Research Lab to it and i am still trying to dock to it, i think the goal is to try and thrust towards the target not to fast or slow but the closer you are and the slower you are basicly if you are 20 centimeters away from your target and you are at the same speed your orbits are basicly the same as well so try getting close and then using rcs to slow yourself down, then get closer and slow down rinse and repeat and eventually you might get it, don't forget rcs is very useful almost a necessity since it's much slower for precision you don't wanna crash into your target
      EDIT as of writing this i managed to successfully dock a Research lab to the fuel tank, so from my understanding you need to get as close as you can to your target and then burn retrograde when the navball is set to target then make sure you aren't too fast or too slow or faraway then try to dock remember to quicksave and when close enough turn off rcs and sas and let the magnets do their job

      and about my english if you mean spelling dont worry i got google to auto correct me there, however if you mean the structure of my sentence by which i mean a lack of grammar then i really dont give a fuck at least i can fucking put a sentence together in the right sequence of what word is first and so on, K ?

      also judging by your profile picture username and channel content, i can easily confirm that you sir are a troll which is why i don't want to even have a decent... WHAT THE FUCK EVEN IS THIS
      finally i will just say you are going to reply with either TL;DR... well shit there goes my time not that i care but still, secondly English is not my main language i prefer it over my main country of origin language but it still isn't my main one but at least AGAIN i can put a sentence together MINUS GRAMMAR.

      The Satanic Gamer From Hell
      The fact that you even mentioned his grammar 'i'm not gonna judge you're english but' (which in itself have 3 mistakes in it) makes you portray yourself as someone who is *far* superior in English en linguistic skills, someone who has given themselves the right to talk about other people's grammar as if you were better.
      As for your spelling and grammar (grammar is *not* only putting words in the right order), it's shit, even when you were correcting me on the "fact" that you do have good grammar.
      About the necro-ing.
      No shits were given about the time and date you commented, having as bad grammar as you do, you needed to be corrected.
      Also, a 'Social Justice Warrior' (it has to be capitalized since it is a title, dummy) and 'Keyboard Warrior' (again, capitalization), generally strive to push their beliefs down other people's collective throats. No beliefs or opinions were stated in my comment, indicating the i am not to be titled a 'Social Justice Warrior' or 'Keyboard Warrior', but rather something known on the internet as a 'Grammar Nazi'.

      Hi. let me explain how i did this.
      So i think you know harry potter and so also Ron. There you got the first part of how to spell it. for the "de" you can take a the but be more gently with the t and add some bass so that it sound like a d. For "vou" you just take who and try to spell it with a v instead of a w but keep the rest. And there you go you can finally spell rondevou. :P
      Back to topic. I struggled at first with matching velo's but than there was a rondevou scenario tutorial mission available that explains everything you need and could even use for interplanetary flights.

    A tip for new space station managers, it is a good idea to orient your station so it is aligned so it is perpendicular to its orbit. That way the station does not block its own solar panels.

But if not, you might need to up the render quality before uploading to youtube. But don't get me wrong. It's not bad, just a bit "milky" and those things can be worked around.

    11:11 I think at this phase of the start you should rotate your rocket so that the PV and the TV are on the right and left side. so you only have to press D to "aim" for the TV. in your case at 10km it was difficult to aim for the TV by pressing W & D.

    The way I learned how to rendezvous didn't teach me to utilize launch windows. I'm too lazy to care about that so i just do this:
    1. Match planes
    2. Burn prograde till orbit intersects with target orbit
    3. Mess around with prograde and retrograde maneuver nodes till I get an encounter that's close enough
    4. Fire engines retrograde (if your ship is faster than the target) or prograde (if your ship is slower than the target) on closest approach to kill relative velocity
    Boom, now you hit f5 and worry about docking next.
    By the way details like closest approach, time to closest approach, relative velocity, and inclination difference can be seen using the Map view, but having the Kerbal Engineer Redux mod is better since you get these information in your main flight HUD without the need to actually click on the nodes in Map view.

    For a beginners Tutorial the launching part sound pretty difficult. Waiting until the two ships align and the launch so the will meet when you reach a stable orbit, was always very confusing when I was a KSP amateur. It is much simpler to understand rendezvousing if you shoot one spaceship in a higher orbit than the other and wait until they are in the right position and then do a transfer burn so the will meet.

    I added four small solar panels to the final stage of the rocket (not including the space station part itself) and I also added a Remote Guidance Unit, then I used the remainder of the fuel to make it fall back to Earth. My OCD spans that far and further, haha. In fact my OCD made me redo the whole process of taking off and sending the Space Station base into orbit four or so times because of small reasons like that :p

    +Scott Manley, I did every thing you instructed and got an intersection with my space probe that was within 2 km, however when I came out of map mode to make my final movements towards my probe, the green dotted square that indicates your target was not showing to help me find the probe. Because of this I was not able to dock with the probe, do you know why the indicator did not show up? Additional note: I used a different AI pod to go up, I used the RC-0015 Remote Guidance Unit for both (this could be why it didn't show up). Any feedback would be great, thanks :)

    I found wide angle lights mostly useless for lighting up the craft I am docking to, they have too small range. If the craft is not lighting up itself and you happen to dock on the night side you see nothing until you're too close for comfort. They're useful for the station/ship to shine on itself, though.

    Hi there from version 1.0.5! I have a quick question. Of course in this tutorial, 1.0 hadn't even existed until now but I have some problems. I have problems trying to get into orbit with small ships, and potentially getting back. I'm expirementing how I can perfect it now and still have a ton of fuel left to go back on my journey. Mostly, in Career mode(with money) I would go and put a T-45 Swivel on top of a decoupler with a solid rocket booster. I also have problems getting to other planets and back. I tried to use MechJeb to help me create a maneuver to go to Eve with the least delta V. I'm happy it didn't take long. Little did I know that it wasted almost all of my fuel on my way back and left me only the little lander with only a small engine and a tiny fuel tank. Any way I can improve this? I am really screwed when it comes to interplanetary missions.

  • @blizzy78

    It doesn't matter if you're going into a higher orbit or a lower orbit depending on whether the target is behind or in front of you. It works both ways. Either one catches up on the other.

    • @silencerius
      @silencerius 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point is to minimise the amount of time (orbits) you wait to catch up so yeah it does matter.

    • @blizzy78
      @blizzy78 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it does not. To reduce the number of orbits you need to wait, you just move one vessel in a higher orbit and the other in a lower orbit. It does not matter which is which.

    • @silencerius
      @silencerius 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      blizzy1978 I'll give you an example because other beginners might be reading this.
      Say you launch a rocket and you end up in a higher circular orbit than your target, with the target being in front of you. You can then just burn retrograde (slow down) for the rendezvous, but to get the closest approach the target must be at an optimal distance in front of you.
      If the target is much further than needed to get an optimal distance you have to wait for it to catch up and it also must get in front of you again in a closer distance and that would mean covering a relative distance of a full orbit, which is many many actual orbits later. Instead, you can go to a lower orbit than your target and you can catch up with it 1 or 2 orbits later.

    • @blizzy78
      @blizzy78 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right in that doing that actually reduces the number of orbits you need to wait. I got confused by your first response. It was not the original point I was trying to make in my very first comment. I wasn't talking about reducing the wait, just that it works both ways.
      Or to put it in different words: Scott seemed to stress the point that you would HAVE to put your docker into a specific lower/higher orbit depending on where the target is, which simply is not true - disregarding the waiting time.

    [Question] If you have a long skinny rocket or station or whatever, would it be more effective/efficient to place two sets of 4 RCS thrusters dead center in the craft, or one set of 4 thrusters at both ends? Either way you have the same amount of thrusters, so the only variable would be positioning. Thanking you in advance.

    • @scottmanley
      @scottmanley  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can put sets of thrusters equdistant from the Center of Mass.

    • @ereboros421
      @ereboros421 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The extension of this answer is very slightly more complicated. While having a single set of thrusters, centered precisely on the CoM, is a completely viable option for nearly any simple craft, and might be the most efficient option, in terms of part count/weight, it won't be as effective as you might like on a large craft, and it possibly won't be your most fuel efficient option. While they certainly need to be equidistant from the CoM, what that distance is becomes a matter of leverage. Taking the CoM to be the same as the fulcrum of a lever, the further the thruster is from the CoM (i.e. the length of the lever), the more force it will deliver for the same amount of fuel, which in turn makes your craft more responsive when altering your direction. Now, this doesn't have much effect on the translation of your craft, but that's where the equidistant point becomes important. Though it would be most effective, rotationally, to place your thrusters at the extremes of your craft, if that doesn't line up properly with your CoM you will start rotating when you attempt to translate, because the thrusters will be applying an uneven amount of force. You avoid this by placing them the same distance either side of the CoM, that way one lever isn't longer than the other.
      tl;dr version: The further away from each other the thrusters are, the better. However, make sure they're equidistant from the CoM, or you'll start rotating when you try to translate.
