kaye anderson aww thank you so much! Ryan Van Duzer is awesome! He is such a pro and we are such beginners. 😂 He seems to be loving every minute, while we suffer so much 😂
Bikepacking is a current interest, thanks for documenting your journey on the GDMBR. Not new to long distance travel (all hiking) but brand new to cycling.
Thanks! We were also pretty new to cycling but had done long treks and backpacking previously. We really enjoyed the bike packing and would love to do it again
That’s is so awesome! I’m glad you enjoyed the video! We hope to do the Colorado section this summer along with the rest of the great divide! Such an adventure :)
@@PursuingMountains Part of it is safety. But also like going to very remote places running out food and water, going up high altitude without warm enough clothes/sleeping bag, or serious mechanical failure of the bike with no one or town in 100 mile radius. When I watch your previous longest bike ride is only 20 miles in the last year. i know it's going to really hurt the first week of this trip. Oh, my God, you two are really something.
spektrumB 😂 yes the first week would have been much less painful if we had trained that is for sure! Luckily we do have quite a bit of backcountry hiking camping experience so we brought proper clothing etc. It was still such a challenge though
At 60 miles/100 km/day, you will find a town every few days and take a couple days food at the very most. Good for you for going for it, learning while you go. I hope you had a great ride!
Thanks! We decided to bring more with us because it was our first bikepacking trip and we also weren't sure how easily we could get food given our dietary restrictions and Covid closures. If we were to go again, we would definitely bring less food and research a little better where we can get food along the way.
I'm used to hiking, camping, and trail running for our TH-cam channel. Trying to convert my old Fuji Touring bike for bikepacking videos to see more of the outdoors each day. Enjoyed the video. Learning again about another way to enjoy the outdoors. Subscribed to your channel.
Watched all your great divide tour videos. My wife and I have done several long trips but not one with hills like this. Closest is the Bitterroot 300 K loop in Idaho.
I booked a flight from Orlando to Portland, and I am taking the empire Builder to West Glacier. I was about to cancel the trip, as I am doing it about the same way y’all did. I kept seeing these blogs and videos of these way over prepared riders and felt ridiculous doing it solo. Thanks for taking the time to post your adventure, its helped push me to do the same!
This episode is my training ground. That’s a big day on a loaded bike. That hill on Bug Creek Road is not easy, but there’s always bears around there. I think I would’ve camped in Bigfork lol. When I did Great Divide in August I targeted 35-40 mile days to minimize suffering!
Wade Harris aww that probably would have been a better plan for us newbies! That is awesome that that area is your training ground! We did slow down in our later episodes and suffering definitely decreased 😂
65 miles on the first day, youz crazy, lol. Normally I do about 25 to 30 miles for the first couple of days. Following, subscribed, thanks for sharing your adventure ;
Haha yeah we were a bit too ambitious with how many miles we thought we could do per day at first. We were in quite a bit of pain as a result. All part of the learning journey though. Next time we’ll ease into it :) Thank you for commenting and following the adventure :)
Hey guys. I just found your channel and wow, kudos to y'all for embarking on such an epic journey with your longest ride being 20 miles. I admire your fortitude and sense of wanderlust in taking on an adventure of this magnitude. I forward to seeing more of this. Woohoo, this is great !!! Atb, Tony
Aww thank you so much! ☺️☺️ We are so glad you are enjoying the series. It was a little crazy doing this with such little training but we are so glad we did :)
"Just saw the cutest black bear, hopefully we see some more" I'm from New Zealand where a wasp is the worst thing you'll come across so I have to ask, ARE YOU INSANE?! Love that you go further on day 1 than your total mileage over the last year 👍🏼👍🏼
😂😂 Black bears are mostly harmless. More often than not they're pretty timid and they try to avoid humans, just make sure to avoid the ones with cubs. We loved our time in New Zealand and would love to go back some day.
Can totally empathise with sore bum bones, get that problem all the time, even after covering a total cycling distance of 1500km (over different shorter rides of course!) the problem still persists :-( Hope you get through it and to your journey's end, regards from the UK :-)
Paul Fisher Hi! Aww thanks for the encouragement! Yeah the level of pain on sore bum bones took us by surprise. What tour did you do that was 1500km? We’d love to do another one soon :) thank you for watching and commenting :)
@@PursuingMountains Sorry, didn't explain properly, it wasn't a tour or anything like that, it was just a load of local rides over the summer in my area of the UK, of up to 75km each time. At 63 years old, I'm not sure I would have it in me to do anything like the Divide, so kudos to both of you :-)
Riding 65 miles and climbing 3,000 feet fully loaded, without prior experience in mountain biking, is incredible. I don't know how you could have done it. It is anything but obvious.
Thank you! It was not the smartest idea for us to do that many miles on our first day 😂 I think it made the saddle sore situation much worse then if we had eased into the trip
Wow I didn't even think about the pick up points and having to send food to specific points on your journey! That is so cool though! So impressed with you guys! There are so many beautiful places that you guys passed though! How many parts will there be??? You guys are truly inspirational, Bernard is not so good on the bike and so this will be hard, but I think we would consider a nice drive through the country! BUTT BONES after 26 miles! NUTELLA TORTILLA! YUMY! 44 miles in hitting a wall? We probably would have stopped much earlier than that! Aw little black bear though! Keep it up guys! You are working out those buns and thighs!! Love the animation! HAHA. 61 MILES? That's amazing right? How did you guys deal with the bathroom situation?? Omg the tent is tiny, but Bernard and I are tiny guys, so that may work out for us! Definitely COZY!!! Can't wait to see the next video!!! Camera is facing the PELVIC REGION! AHHH! AHAHA.
exploreaswego thanks! We aren’t sure how many parts there will be. We are just editing the footage we have and seeing where it takes us. Hopefully not too many but we have so much footage 🙈 We go to the bathroom just on the side of the road mostly...there’s no one around. If it’s #2 we dig a hole and keep a ziploc bag with the dirty tissues which we dump in the garbage every chance we get....haha
Carrying way too much weight. Buy your food at gas stations, fast food outlets and grocery stores. Only stock up if there are long stretches without food or water available.
Did you survive? Just found Part 1. I can't believe you did this without having biked more than 20 miles in training!? Good thing you're frickin' young!
Good question. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend my method, but I mostly used the Backcountry Navigator App on my phone and I downloaded someone’s GPS tracks that I found online. If I could do it again, I would consider buying the official GPS tracks from the Adventure Cycling Association.
Hi Gloria! I think we would have done much less at least, but it was on our drive up anyways so we decided we might as well. We are vegetarians so we were worried about whether small stores would have food we could eat as well. We probably could have made it work though. We would have needed to just add some detours here and there as some of the stores were a bit off the trail. I think there were times when we did not have food access for several days so it’s good to have extra. Also, there was a time we were stuck in storm, if we didn’t have extra food we would have gone hungry etc. good luck with your trip!
Hi! That is awesome you’re a teacher! We aren’t school teachers. We were just starting back at work after traveling full time (until COVID hit of course).
We went to the Salsa Fargo bikes. They are a gravel touring bike. They worked pretty good. We will be releasing a full GDMBR gear review video soon and will discuss in it some of the pros and cons we experienced :)
you dont need so much food, u can buy it in grocery stores anywhere. you have a ton of mistakes about bikepacking and touring, maybe if u learn about it more u will dont say that you never want to do this anymore
You need beans on those tortillas ;)
Ryan Van Duzer 😂 I bet that would have been good. Do you put cold beans on your tortillas while bikepacking or do you heat them up first?
hahahaha
Frijoles es mejor. Cheese is deadly!
Duzer….you have me convinced on the beans!
a trick : watch series on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching all kinds of movies these days.
Cool to see this from a rookie perspective for a change. Very funny. Thanks guys!
