  • A year ago, I repaired 2004 Toyota Sienna passenger side power sliding door problem. It was a "Lock-Release" system failure. I replaced parts and everything worked OK. But I did not know that at the same time, there were other problems hidden that were much worse than this problem. My Sienna's sliding door was dead for second time. Again, I challenged these new problems and fixed them once and for all.
    The parts I bought wre
    1)Power Sliding Door Cable Assembly w/o Motor 04-10 Toyota Sienna PASSENGER Side (from ebay, $225.00 free shipping)
    2)Genuine Toyota 68380-08031 Door Hinge Assembly (from Amazon $85.09 free shipping)
    I learned a lot of things from these site.
    1) sheareyourrepair.com (formerly jonfixesstuff.com) by John
    goo.gl/b7ccjw
    2) How to Replace a Toyota Sienna's Center Hinge on the Sliding Door(2005) by Go Ontryit (TH-cam video)
    goo.gl/pbaUnW
    Thank you John and Go Ontryit, you guys are awesome.
    In my video, I replaced sliding cable and center hinge. You can see how badly both parts were damaged. And also you understand that these repair can be done by yourself.
    2004 to 2010 Sienna's parts should be same, so if you own these year's car, this video could be a good hint.
    My first video about lock-release replacement video is

    I hope my video will help you !!

    Thanks for covering the actual spool reassembly! Most videos gloss right over this. It isn’t even covered in the new part instructions.

    Bro this looks very hard to do, but honestly I didn’t even watch this video first I just figured it out on my own. I went to lkq pick a part learned how to do everything there before I touched my door. I took out the motor and pulley, The plastic pulley came undone and had no idea how it went. But I figured it out in 5 mins. My cable ends near the motor, the cable jacket came undone inside so it was locking up the pulley. It wasn’t nearly as bad like this video. Removed the all the plastic jacket off the cable cleaned the plastic cover regreased the bearings and and motor gear. Works like a charm now. Paid $48.00 for spare motor and cable. Oh yea by the way if your motor is still good and cable is just stuck by the plastic jacket cover, you just need to remove the inside door panel, window snail cover, and the motor pulley.

    Thanks for your videos. My rear passenger sliding door has been broke for years. Being it is a '04 and it is 2015, I was not about to pay the outrageous amount for TOYOTA to fix it. I ended up just making it a manual door since the kids are way out the car seat age. Now I just have to replace the compressed air shocks for the back hatch. THANKS AGAIN. !

      This is a COMMON problem with Sienna's. Toyota knows it should have a recall on the thousands of Toyota's that have this issue. Not worth $1,100.00 to have the bloody door open. I 'll just use the drivers side door. Dammit! : )

    Wow nice job just so you know if other side breaks Toyota will fix for free,yesterday mine broke the cable and I called toyota customer service not dealership and they said it was under recall I have a 2006 sienna xle with 134,000 and it was still covered Toyota even called the nearest dealership near me and set everything up I just had to confirm what time would be best for me so Tuesday it is all covered very happy so my advice do not call dealership you will get run around call Toyota customer service they will take care of it .

    Great diy video. I have the same exact problem. First the door needed a little help closing, then the cable shredded and starting making crunchy noises, then the cable snapped. I wonder if the worn out hinge is the root of this whole issue and resulted in the cable issue. Need to go order parts. Thanks.

    hi teddy, i believe the weakness of this design was that central bolt, that was the part that was causing the play on mine. i wish i can find a part just to replace that specific piece and not have to pay 100 for the entire hinge

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Ryan. I hope you will be able to locate bolt parts. By the way, when I removed the center hinge and checked it, it was certainly bent by the weight of the door. I guessed that the main reason was the position of the hinge, and I would say it was design flow. The position of the center hinges of this sienna is very high point, therefor the hinge needs to hold heavy weight of the door. Other makers car's hinge position is lower than sienna. Anyway, good luck of your DIY project.

    • @ryanc6767
      @ryanc6767 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Teddy Hashee hi teddy, i am sorry i do not know the part name, but i think the problem in mine is called the door hinge pin which did not bend, but has loosened at the top...there is a little part that helps with its fitment and i believe it os compromised due to the weight. am i on the right track? anyways, i am still going to order the whole hinge but for the future, i would try to fix that pin. thanks again.

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the center hinge getting weak, you will see the gap between door and body becomes so narrow. In my case the door was slightly touching the body. So probably the center hinge issue will contributes in some way for the cable problem in a long run. Thank you for the comment.

    Teddy, great job on the video, thank you! I will be tackling this repair on my wife's Sienna this weekend. I do have one question, when you were counting the number of cable wraps around the pulley, you had written down 2 wraps for the front and 3 wraps for the rear. Later in the video when you had to add one more wrap, was that on the front or rear? Thanks again and have a good one!

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I had to wrap the cable 3 and 3 for both side, however, I miscounted for the front one. So I wrapped 2 times for front and 3 times for back. You can wrap cable 3 front and 3 back then you see that 2 cables will meet in the center of the pulley. Hope your DIY repair will go well. Teddy

    Thomas Hughes I had to do alot of back and forth and in the end I was out of warranty also but I called the toyota customer line not dealership and they have me a 500 credit on whatever I need so I am saving that for down the line with brakes or whatever it needs,with your problem it might be a resistor in the door that went bad since nothing is happening with mine when you push the bottom you can still here motor trying to work but the cable snapped there are a few videos online to change the resistor in the door not as hard as doing the motor like this,using it manual right now on mine and will be fixed soon when I have the time lol

    just bought a 07 sienna... heard this this was a real hassle.... previous owner did one door at the dealer a few months ago... the other (only used 10% of the time could be a ticking time bomb). Would you recommend doing cable & hinge if you're going to do the cable anyways?

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I knew that a center hinge would be a problem at the first time, I did replace the both parts that including a center hinge.

    Hi Teddy. Great video and so helpful. I'm having the same problem you had with the cable coming too short by an inch to snap it in the holder (20:44 on your video). What did you do to fix this issue? Thank you.

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Laurent. When I was trying to snap one of the cable ends to the door side body, I could not do it. So I just remove the other end of the cable that was snapped in the tail side of the body, and first I set door side cable end, then go to the tail side end and pull straight strongly and snapped it in. Because of at the tail side, you do not have to bend the cable to snap it in, tail side was just a straight line. Instead, door side was kind of "L" shape and that was the reason I could not set cable. So first you want to set one of the cable ends to the door side of the body, then you go to the tail side and pull the cable and snap it in there. The plastic that holding cable ends has spring inside, so you should be able to pull cable long enough to snap it in. If this way will not solve your problem, then there may be other reason you could not snap cable ends to the body. I hope this will help you.

      My 2008 has similar problems, and also, the passenger side door is seized shut after the cable snapped. I'm going to start taking a closer look tomorrow, but do you have any idea why it won't open? I can hear something clicking near the bottom-rear of the door. Thanks!

      I totally agree with you. Automatic door is OK at first, then when it comes to not working condition, it will cost you more than $1k to fix the problem at the dealership. That huge cost will drive many car owners to DIY repair.

    Hey Teddy.
    we had decided to fix the door after the new year because of the financial cost of the cables with housing. I was installing the window back in and putting it all back together so we can use it manually and the door closed without having the 2 bolts in on the hinge, now the door is jammed and I can not open it. Any advice?

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably the cable is jammed. If you are going to buy new cable, then you can just cut old one and the door will be free from cable. Even though you are switching to manual mode, if the cable is jammed, you can not open the door. Only solution is cut the cable in somewhere. Or just you can remove the one or both end of the cable from its stopper. You can where the end of the cable in my video. Hope it will help you.

    • @teddyhashee

      +fiestyfemme You can remove door panel, then remove cover of the pulley. That's it. Or if you change cable and do not need to keep original one, you can just cut cable from outside of the car. This way, you do not have to open the door panel. Hope you can solve your problem. Teddy
