Maybe 7 or so years from now, the owner of another Sienna van will need this center roller hinge, but new ones will be unobtanium, and Wilbert's U-Pull It of Bath will have this one in inventory. And the bolts will have a chance of coming off without breaking, thanks to your diligence and Fluid Film (insert sheep's "baah" sound here).
Thank you Eric for showcasing "" Luna "", the little darling !!!! And she was very talkative and lots of rubbing !!!! It just melts my heart how lovable these kitties are, and all they do for you - guard cat, alarm clock, #1 mouser, and they always have good things to say when they see you !!!!! That was a delicate job removing and installing that sliding hinge, disaster is waiting for that one careless moment you aren't paying attention !!!! I saw that oven masterpiece Mrs. O. was making for you and the kids - such a loving wife and mom !!!! The hinge install was flawless, paint it ?? No, you fluid filmed it. Painting is just cosmetic, not a show stopper. As you said, the van will be worn out and the unpainted hinge will still be indestructible !!!!! I put new high quality shocks on my truck. My wife asked why I was clear coating them since they were factory painted. I explained that the clear coating - 2 coats - was to make them still look like new 5 years from now, and not all rusted from rock dings !!! She didn't understand - it's a man thing !!!!! Women get their nails painted exotic colors AND then clear coat them - same principle. 😀😛👍
Some years ago(39) when I bought my first car, the dealer(s)/shops I took my car for service would always lube/grease all the hinges (hood, doors and trunk) as part of the free service. Mr O has instilled some faith back into the automotive industry. Thank you!
@@MrRShoaf Ford in their infinite wisdom ditched that from their yearly service plan, at least here in Germany. I suppose in an effort to make service cheaper for leased cars. They specifically tell you to only lube the hood latch. I don't even, just why?

This is my first time watching one of your videos. I was laughing within the first few minutes. I don't think I've ever been so entertained while watching a car repair video! Thanks for the good info and the giggles. ("Take some lessons, Honda!")
Brings back memories of our 2001 Sienna trying to break my daughters leg (no edge pressure sensors of any kind) - That door motor was RIPPED out that night..
An SMA Video, Mrs. O, Luna, doesn't get better than that! Thanks for the ride along. Did see your "not super concerned " Face in the window, for the win!
I used to have a 95 Honda Camry. One time I was driving back from Utah to California with a wind behind me, and when I stopped in Elko, NV I filled up and checked my mileage and had got 34 MPG. I checked it 3 times! I couldn't believe it! Man I miss that car!!
I'd ve painted it. It delays the job for an hour, but in the end it looks good. People say they don't care, but in reality they notice when its isn't. Still, as you say, do as the customer asks'.
So Eric, I had to tell you about this. I recently bought a 2003 Pontiac Vibe. The seller had a hand full of repair receipts from 2 shops. From watching your videos and looking at the repairs on the vibe I could tell one shop was great, did good work, put things back together properly and used good parts. The other shop-no good, wires hanging, screws/bolts loose, missing. Poor quality parts (the dor*** type). Even viewers who do not do their own work have been taught by you what to look for to spot great/quality work. Millions and millions of people around the world are spotting good work thanks to you. Celebrate with some KFC. You have earned it!
When you think about the normal life of a sealed roller bearing it's revolutions are in the millions. I can't imagine these rollers saw even ten thousand revolutions and they're destroyed! Quality is a term no longer used in design and manufacturing. Nice work my friend and keep them coming!
Those rollers don't have ball bearings. The rollers are plastic/rubber with a brass sleeve in the center that functions as a sleeve bearing. Because that support is exposed to dirt, the brass sleeve bearing gets destroyed after around 10-years of use (where I live) and the rollers start dragging. Once this happens, the door will stop or reverse itself mid travel. The motion of the bracket gets so rough that the mechanism believes that something is obstructing the door. The safety systems kick in and stop/reverse the door. I think it would've been better to use a sealed bearing. That said, I don't know if they could make a bearing that small (about 10mm-15mm OD) that could take the weight of those doors.
I have installed several of those hinges and have only painted a few. No problems here HOWEVER I have heard of snow only in stories. It snowed here 1 time in my life and that was the great storm of 89! There was snow here for nearly 8hours one day! Never since
I had to do this same job on our ‘08 sienna a couple years ago when it started dragging against the bottom sill. I was curious how Mr O would do it. Aside from the minor differences in design between the years (the cable runs over in mine instead of under on this one) it was pretty much the same. I also had to go out and look at mine to verify it came painted black from the dealer so not need to paint or fluid film it. My wife has driven it for 14 years now and doesn’t want to get rid of it until the kids are out of the house and she can transition to something smaller. It is a tank.
I have a 2008 also, head gasket blew. Two mechanics said this is common for siennas and that I would need to replace the engine. Price to repair equals value of car. Interested in your thoughts. Would you replace or scrap the car? (There are other issues with the car that were irritating, but otherwise I liked the car)
@@fayenewsom2197 If it is really just the head gasket, then have them replaced. Real question is how rusty is it? Super rusty = don't keep, not too bad, then worth considering.

Easy job made tough in tight quarters. Made the bolts look like they were a foot long. Man, you're careful and skilled. No scratches or even smudges! I installed a loud horn on my boat and was out of rattle can black paint to protect the bare metal bracket I made. I applied some gun blue liquid with a brush and turned it dark blue/black. It hasn't rusted in all the years it has been on the bow of my boat. It's just so easy to do and I like the color of it too. If you don't mind it being black......

Very nice tutorial! Very helpful, well done, and clearly explained! I have a question for you; I have an issue the power sliding door of my 2002 Sienna. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. TYVM

I learned was if you're painting the door, it's better to take off the mirror and belt molding (the trim at the bottom of the window) for a better paint job in the end. The mirror can get in the way, and if you're unlucky, the clear coat could stick in that gap between the door and the belt molding.
When I saw that working area and saw you switch to the open end of the wrench I got upset for you. I absolutely hate using the open side of a wrench. 1/8th of a turn at a a time...... No thanks. Great video. Thanks for the amount of videos you've been doing lately.
Nice video. This one caused me to spend some money. I went and checked out that Mouse Milk. Sounded like some good stuff and what I probably needed when trying to get a rusted brake line fitting out yesterday so I ordered some. I had to use heat but it was a struggle since my torch kept going out because it was so windy.
Dust and dirt are the greatest enemy of these doors. I have a 2004 Honda odyssey, doors still working but lots of maintenance, speaking from experience.

I work at a Yota dealer. If you roll down the sliding door window it takes a lot of the awkwardness away of removing/installing the hinge

He wasn't talking about painting the door, he was talking about the new hinge which is bare metal.
The hinge will match perfectly with the door closed.
When I saw that working area and saw you switch to the open end of the wrench I got upset for you. I absolutely hate using the open side of a wrench. 1/8th of a turn at a a time...... No thanks. Great video. Thanks for the amount of videos you've been doing lately.
Eric, you are the the shit ! From Bullhead City AZ
Nice video. This one caused me to spend some money. I went and checked out that Mouse Milk. Sounded like some good stuff and what I probably needed when trying to get a rusted brake line fitting out yesterday so I ordered some. I had to use heat but it was a struggle since my torch kept going out because it was so windy.
Great video, definitely easier than my Honda!
Dust and dirt are the greatest enemy of these doors. I have a 2004 Honda odyssey, doors still working but lots of maintenance, speaking from experience.
