my dad was a detective for nearly 30 years, and he taught me all of these classic techniques. i use them all the time. suffice to say, i have few friends. it's sad when you find out how often people lie, and that lying is such a huge part of so-called "social behavior"....when in fact it's actually anti-social. but try explaining THAT at a party X.x
Dear Sir, Don't worry about people thinking that you are lying. A trained psychologist will know the difference between a lie and stress or anxiety. May God bless you for all that you have done. You are an extremely brave man. Everyone should salute you and hold you up as an ideal member of society. Thank you for your service :)
I just wanted to note that some of the deceptive body language described is very common in someone with Social Anxiety. I struggle with this myself. It's because I feel like I'm lying about being a normal well adjusted person who doesn't get nervous in everyday situations. So in essence my body language does betray a lie. It's just not the kind of lie that people would normally worry about.
You are definitely correct and I should have pointed out the importance of baselining in this tutorial. In the comments I talk about this fault a lot. Most people don't pay any attention to body language though so it should be an issue.
Carbonatedjello I was just thinking the exact same thing. I actually have an irrational fear of someone thinking I’m lying when I’m not. I tend to ramble when I’m nervous ( which is almost always because of how bad my social anxiety is) and the moment I notice that the person I’m talking to is becoming disinterested or looking at me strangely, I immediately turn beat red, pulse and bp spike, cortisol rises and I start rambling even more and making even less sense. I hate it because I feel like it comes across as though I’m either hiding something or completely crazy. But yes, I’m definitely triggered when I sense that someone thinks I’m lying because I’m not 😫 I just have severe social anxiety/panic disorder/agoraphobia, ect. 🤦🏻♀️

That's exactly what I would expect a pathological liar to say. You think the people who write those behavioral manuals don't know about PTSD and other anxiety disorders? People that lie deliberately always try to act like they're somehow the exception to the rule. As if your DNA and brain wiring and physiology is somehow different than EVERY other person on the planet. When I tell people I'm trained in NLP and they say "I'm the exception" I already know they're going to lie - your eye accessing cues are not going to be completely different than EVERY person on the planet.

Gra Piken Thank you :) In the study that I participated in we found micro expressions to be unreliable. Kind of like this video, it was very easy to be overwhelmed with information which lead to making conclusions that may or may not mean anything.
Body language analysis is just like any other skill in that it takes time to develop. I was lucky enough to be in a position to practice nearly every moment of every day for a former employer. After constantly reading many people after about 3 months it turned from memorization into a skill that just worked. I can read most anyone just as easy as I can listen to them talk. To deal with people suffering with certain disorders you have to learn to baseline.
You have to understand that these techniques are used to get information that people don't want to give. The questions I would ask would make a person very uncomfortable.
I watched this video, and then used my new found powers in kind of an unjust way. I asked my friends if they had a crush on someone or not, and when I told them they were lying to me, they confessed. I agree 100%. These signs are actually signs of distress. They are seen as signs of lying only when a person is questioned and they show this sign of distress either before or during their answer. Sorry about any confusion
Some of these telltale signs are also symptoms of ADHD, especially the foot shaking, so if you are questioning someone with ADHD it is probably a good idea to take these similar behaviours into account :P
You're correct there have been studies that have both said that it is untrue as well as that it is true. I was involved in a pretty massive corporate study with thousands of test subjects. We felt in the end that it was worth paying attention to as long as the subject was baselined before we started making judgements. I hope that helps
Hi Derek, in 4:13 you said that if a right handed person lies, his/her eyes will often move/look to left side and vice versa. But how about Ambidextrous people? They are both right handed and left handed... So how can we know through their eyes movement if they're lying... Sorry for my English (it's not my first language). Thanks!
I have my suspicions that this is false, just because the anatomy of the human brain isn't 'mirrored' in left handed people. So the parts of the brain for auditory or visual recollection or creativity would be accessed in the same parts of the brain
You're very welcome :) I worked for a marketing firm that hired some members of law enforcement, but I'm not a police officer. This stuff came from a research job I once had.
The uncomfortable questions would be used just to get you to lower your guard. They are used to get you to lose focus on hiding what is really important. I would disregard any response that would be caused by my inappropriate questions. Yes your responses to the inappropriate questions would cause tension, but the follow up questions would produce very valuable information. Just about anyone that is questioned will eventually slip. It is nearly impossible to conceal a lie. It just takes practice
That is common. What we do during lie detection is to watch what gestures change during questioning. i should have talked more about baselining in this tutorial.
I should have stated the importance of base lining while analyzing body language. You have to eliminate those gestures, or statements that are part of the persons internal dictionary. Then you can look for changes when the person is being questioned. Verbal analysis is very powerful if you do that
one more tip, if your some where, we'll say a bar, and ask a girl/ guy for their number and they are telling u it while you type in the numbers your phone that they are saying, ask them to say the number back, if they repeat it wrong from what they said at first, they gave you a fake number ;)
Or you could speak out the written number for them as if you're verifying it and change a digit or two. Make sure you speak clearly so that you don't fall for a false positive. For further obfuscation, you should read the number differently from how they read it before. Let's say it's an 8 digit number. If the person spoke out the digits 2 by 2, you should say 2 digits and then 3 by 3, or even read them digit by digit, and make sure the change you make is in the obfuscated part. If it's really their number they're giving you then they probably memorize it the way they said it at first. So if they actually want to give you their number, they would verify the one you said by rearranging it in their heads. Eventually they either spot the error, ask you to reread the number, or tell you the number in the way they memorize it. But if they're just trying to get rid of you, they would have forgotten the number they made out, because they were distracted by the digits you gave. Even if they didn't, they wouldn't bother taking time to mentally rearrange the digits. And they wouldn't ask you to reread the number because that might get them confused and reveal their trick. And so a lying person would definitely go along and affirm the number you stated. This is a much more accurate system, with an astronomically small possibility of a false positive. And as they say, boring classes are the mother of all inventions.
I don't know if there is such a thing as a perfect girlfriend. The perfect person, is one with very high self esteem. You should never try to change yourself to better serve others. Always push to instill belief in yourself and the amazing things you can accomplish. If you are confident and believe in yourself everyone will want to be around you
I agree. I should have pointed out that this information should only be applied to normal people and not anyone with any type of mental illness, or someone who is under an extreme level of stress. Thanks for pointing that out
This video was really helpful and resourceful! Very informative! ^-^ thank you for making this video! It took a lot of time and work, and it was well worth it! Subscribed! :)
On "cut the bullshit"...I was on my way to a dentist appointment and had to quit watching at the democrat arguing that this was not even a thing worthy of a hearing. (I do not like going to the dentist, and was a bit on edge.) I sometimes blurt my thoughts.
No, remember, a prosecutor is a lawyer with a badge. They are only worried they cannot reasonably charge you with so much that you will plead down, and not mess up their conviction rate.
This is honestly one of the coolest and most helpful videos I have ever watched on a subject like this. In ten years of studying about psychology and analysis of human reaction and interaction I haven't found a video that I feel covers most bases like this one does. It even taught me some stuff I never would have thought about. Great Job! :)
There seems to be some confusion about which way I'm referring. Everything is based off your perception as the viewer. So if someone looks to your left (which is their right) that is a sign of creating / lying and vice versa. I hope that clears it up
Srbskiiinat So you're basically saying any kind of gestures/movement doesnt indicate anything? and didn't i say thats why you base line the person so you can see if crossing hands is a indicator of lying unless you know nothing about base lining. This is where this video went wrong. He didn't teach us anything on base lining. Base lining is a crucial techinique you use before spotting any idicators or else you're just blindly judging people because who knows crosssing amrs could a common thing the person does. Okay now if the person does cross their arms you don't just assume straight away that they're lying. In fact crossing arms doesn't really show that they're lying its more of an indicator to show that they're negative towards you, not open to you ect. so its just another sign to look for.
Saitama No, what i am saying is that if that person is not someone you intimitly know, there is no short fast cut way to know those small signals. which are a percentage game either way. there's ofcourse stress and what not that causes some behaviours but you never know for certain wether or not that person is nervous and acts because he/she is lying or if its simply because the person is afraid you won't believe him.
Your interest isn't ridiculous at all. I actually don't understand why more people aren't interested in this stuff? The name for what you're looking for is indirect hypnosis. I made a bunch of videos on the topic. I tested all this stuff while working for a company that made sales tools. Our study was based on testing unsuspecting customers. Soon I'll cover hypnotic storytelling. I originally wasn't going to cover it, but so many politicians are using it now that I decided I should
I know there are exceptions to every rule so I'll share an experience with you that I had. I was grilled for four hours one time by a very aggressive attorney who was representing a VERY dishonest client in regards to a matter that I was involved in. I was innocent and was honest in my deposition but I was so nervous that I had dry mouth the entire time and had a sore throat by the time I left. He was repetitively asking very direct questions that I felt I should have known the answer to but didn't. I felt like he was making a fool of me and by the end of the deposition he was disrespecting me to the point that I was ready to deliver a beat down on this guy and he knew it. I was so frustrated that for the last half hour my answer to ever question was "I don't recall", which for the most part I didn't. This was an experience I never wish to repeat. No dishonesty there on my part just uncertainty but with the same "symptoms" you describe that come with lying.
628DirtRooster Thank you for sharing. That is why an honest person normally acts out in anger. That is one of the major problems with a court room. People are told to be calm while another person treats them with disrespect. Yes I should have stressed how to see false positives more in this video.
This technique was found to be very valuable in business meetings in which the decision maker wasn't known. It was amazing how often the decision maker used the dominant handshake while nobody else did
You're very welcome :) I did that at one point with CSPAN videos, but they were taken down for copyright reasons. I have been thinking about creating a channel that would be just for videos like that
Yes we are looking for signs of irritation or just being uncomfortable. Before we can read anything from someone it is always important to baseline them
I'm very happy to hear that your faith helped you through those bad times. I doubt even the worlds most ardent atheist doesn't at some point pray for guidance. I believe we can all be saved by either finding strength from the kindness of others, or through a higher power.
Anger is normally a sign of the truth. Fidgeting or not maintaining eye contact isn't always a sign of disinterest. Does she do the same thing with other people she is talking to? Does she do the same thing even with people that you know she respects?
Yes I agree. People make little lies all of the time. These mainly aim at more serious lies. Yes, I wish I would have stressed the importance of baselining more in this video
That is why it is important to notice only the changes that occur at the time of questioning. I never knowingly tested this stuff on anyone with any mental defects though
Yes that could be true. It is a phrase people use if they are aware that they lie often. It also is used by people with insecurity issues. This is especially true if the use it numerous times over the course of a short conversation
great vid, derek banas, on lie detection, notes: * if eyes look left (their right), constructing/making up; if eyes look right (their left), remembering; this is for right handers * show your palms to make them more honest * don’t let them sit on their hands by handing them a beverage or making them change their position * signs of truth * palms up unless done excessively * hands on hips is generally sign of truth * anger/frustration * signs of discomfort, distress * men construct walls with arms crossed, drink across body, women with purse * people touch faces, mouths, neck when distressed or lying * signs of lying * we use familiar words when telling truth, we borrow questioner’s words or use unfamiliar words when lying (e.g., had sex versus sexual relationship) * we change ownership of pronouns (e.g., “my car” versus “the car”) * we answer question with question, or repeat the question * our feet fidget; look at direction feet are pointing (feet point towards what they want)
Everything here comes from a time in which I was developing sales materials. This is meant to be both fun and yet isn't 100% complete. I should have talked about the importance of baselining people a bit more and indeed you are correct that this is all based on working with people in the US. It isn't very nice to call people pretentious, or that they are pretending to have knowledge.
This isn't based on Paul Ekmans work but instead by combining everything from numerous best selling books and law enforcement texts. I then discarded everything that all of these texts didn't agree on. For example Ekmans pupil dilation tests were discarded because they couldn't be used in normal situations. These are just tests that can easily be used in the real world. Like you said, judgements shouldn't be made based on an isolated signal, but instead should be based on groups
Thank you :) I should have pointed out that these signs should be used during a questioning process. So, for example if you ask someone if they cheated on someone and they respond by crossing their arms and then make a negative statement like "Why would you say that, No", then chances are they are lying. Sorry about that
Most of these techniques deal with serious lies. Things like "Did you cheat on me?" Body language analysis and other NLP techniques can be very useful if practiced in every day communication however. With practice it opens up a completely new way of communicating
It means to sort out gestures that may provide false positives. Some people have ticks where they naturally touch say their ear over and over for no reason. Maybe their eye accessing clues are the opposite from the norm. When we spot them we take them out of the equation. it takes practice
These phrases are just things to look for. They aren't always signs of deception, but more often than not when a person is trying to hide something they use these phrases.
You are correct. This is all based on testing done on average people. Everything in this video is also based on proper baselining of a person. If that was done correctly someone who was experienced would notice that you were different
It is better sometimes to find comfort in your own world since it is very hard to change the thoughts of others. I to have screamed at walls in the past only to find I'm left only with exhaustion. Every once in a while the need to spread what I see as truth rises like bile in my throat, but I now choke it down even if it feels as if I'm suffocating from my own bad medicine.
Do what ever you can to have more positive experiences. Anytime you are having bad thoughts try to physically do the opposite. So, if you are sitting when you have bad thoughts get up and move. Sometimes improving the quality of our lives requires us only to decide to have more fun and enjoy life :)
It is kind of sad that tools that could be used to help are all to often used to destroy. Yes I participated in studies years ago on how to use indirect hypnosis techniques to aid in negotiation. We explored many tools utilized by NLP practitioners. It was very fascinating. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos :)
Thank you very much :) I'm very happy with the people that do watch my videos. Everyone seems to be very nice. If I was popular I'd probably have a ton of trolls
I agree. It can be very dangerous to not understand how people manipulate others. I'm amazed by how easy people are to manipulate. It is a little frightening actually
I always allow people to turn my hand which ever way they want. As you can see it is probably more valuable to do that because you can find out who is in charge in a room. Some people might think I'm weak, but that has never bothered me
I find pretty interesting that you don't talk about duping delight in the whole section of lie spotting, maybe because it apply the most to psychopaths and most of the time they KNOW how to hide these micro expressions but duping delight is something that a lot of people use when they try to manipulate others or just to play fool. On the other hand, this video was really well done and pretty helpful, so thank you.
I'm really putting these things into practice and I'm noticing that mostly everyone lies to some a certain extant. This actually causes me much excitement. Thanks for this!
If your mannerisms are extreme you'd more then likely make testing very hard. Then we'd probably focus on verbal analysis if there was any reason to proceed further. I never tested any of this stuff though and anyone that would be complex to analyze. We focused on a random sampling of people from an urban area and another from a rural section of the country.
I never understood why it is common for people to see two completely different names and assume they were the same. Yes what I have read agrees with you. They are completely different. It is also sad that most people believe that they were created through terrible circumstances rather then born with the disturbance
Thank you :) There have been a bunch of questions on why he acted that way. Either way I thought it was a good example and everyone knew who he was, so I put it in

It just takes practice
i always cross my arms and put my hands in my pockets even when i tell the truth
That is common. What we do during lie detection is to watch what gestures change during questioning. i should have talked more about baselining in this tutorial.
I was thinking this, especially here in windy/chilly England lol
Kaeseia I understand. I'm sitting in windy/chilly/rainy/snowy Pittsburgh, PA :)
Meh that's too boring :p
Unless they're like Elaine and have a standard fake
I don't know if there is such a thing as a perfect girlfriend. The perfect person, is one with very high self esteem. You should never try to change yourself to better serve others. Always push to instill belief in yourself and the amazing things you can accomplish. If you are confident and believe in yourself everyone will want to be around you
thanks now i know how to lie better ;)
That's funny :)
Subscribed! :)
Thank you very much :) I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Derek Banas Sir honestly your videos are full of sincere efforts and valuable information.Thank You for sharing with us.
You're very welcome :) Ill be getting back into other psychology topics very soon
Remember boys and girls, "it's not a lie if YOU believe it".
u keep on believing that ok.
Lk T lol
Are you quoting Shawn's father?
I'm happy you enjoyed it :) It was fun to make
I bet a good prosecutor would be very good at this.
Yes lawyers and good actors are very aware of body language.
I had previously placed people reading with "touchy-feely" things to disregard. Crazy, I know Mark from work 25 years ago.
Great Job! :)
***** Thank you for the nice compliments :) I just made a video based off of what some experts taught me.
thank you, loved this. or did I?
That's funny :) Thank you
You're very welcome :) Im glad you liked it
I lie by putting emotion into it
There seems to be some confusion about which way I'm referring. Everything is based off your perception as the viewer. So if someone looks to your left (which is their right) that is a sign of creating / lying and vice versa. I hope that clears it up
so much BS... body language like crossing hands isn't a sign that someone lies. it might aswell be a stationary thing they do on a normal basis!
+Srbskiiinat It kinda depends on the person. Thats why you base line the person first.
Saitama there aren't types of person, there are only unending factors to a person. which makes a thing like crossing hands mean nothing.
+Srbskiiinat thats why you base line the person before applying any of these tricks.
I originally wasn't going to cover it, but so many politicians are using it now that I decided I should
I wouldn't want to play poker with you.
Playing poker in college helped pay the bills :)
Yes I should have stressed how to see false positives more in this video.
good advice
Thank you :)
This technique was found to be very valuable in business meetings in which the decision maker wasn't known. It was amazing how often the decision maker used the dominant handshake while nobody else did
I'm just watching this to become a better liar...
KludgeSec That's funny :)
You're very welcome :) I did that at one point with CSPAN videos, but they were taken down for copyright reasons. I have been thinking about creating a channel that would be just for videos like that
Yes we are looking for signs of irritation or just being uncomfortable. Before we can read anything from someone it is always important to baseline them
You're very welcome :) I'm glad you found it useful
I'm very happy to hear that your faith helped you through those bad times. I doubt even the worlds most ardent atheist doesn't at some point pray for guidance. I believe we can all be saved by either finding strength from the kindness of others, or through a higher power.
Yes watch for changes that occur after you ask the questions
Anger is normally a sign of the truth. Fidgeting or not maintaining eye contact isn't always a sign of disinterest. Does she do the same thing with other people she is talking to? Does she do the same thing even with people that you know she respects?
Good point! I have never tested that, but I could see getting someone to tell a story backwards would trip up someone that was lying :)
Yes I agree. People make little lies all of the time. These mainly aim at more serious lies. Yes, I wish I would have stressed the importance of baselining more in this video
I completely agree with your statement. I'm sorry, but I don't know the back story of much of what you are writing, but it is very interesting
We all instinctively know this stuff, so that is why you noticed something was off. I'm glad you found the video useful :)
great vid, derek banas, on lie detection, notes:
* if eyes look left (their right), constructing/making up; if eyes look right (their left), remembering; this is for right handers
* show your palms to make them more honest
* don’t let them sit on their hands by handing them a beverage or making them change their position
* signs of truth
* palms up unless done excessively
* hands on hips is generally sign of truth
* anger/frustration
* signs of discomfort, distress
* men construct walls with arms crossed, drink across body, women with purse
* people touch faces, mouths, neck when distressed or lying
* signs of lying
* we use familiar words when telling truth, we borrow questioner’s words or use unfamiliar words when lying (e.g., had sex versus sexual relationship)
* we change ownership of pronouns (e.g., “my car” versus “the car”)
* we answer question with question, or repeat the question
* our feet fidget; look at direction feet are pointing (feet point towards what they want)
***** Thank you :) Thanks for listing an abbreviated list to help others
Derek Banas no prob :) I usually listen at 1.5x but was impossible with yours!
Yes it is very important to baseline everyone and not to make snap judgements. I agree and should ave talked about that in the video
Sorry about that
Thank you :) I'm very happy that you enjoyed it
I'm glad you liked it :)
Sorry about the confusion. Yes, I should have stressed that these signs are guides and not always definite facts
Many are general signs of discomfort. I know I make many of these signs as well while in crowds, or other situations in which I'm not comfortable
Thank you :) I'm glad you liked it
It is better sometimes to find comfort in your own world since it is very hard to change the thoughts of others.
You are quite a good writer. I'm very happy that your faith has made you so happy. May God bless you and your family :)
I agree that I should have done that. Base lining is extremely important
You're very welcome :) Thank you very much for sharing with your friends.
Some people might think I'm weak, but that has never bothered me
Yes these are signs of discomfort. With practice you'll learn to tell the difference
Thank you very much :) Im working on a new psychology tutorial right now on hypnotic storytelling
That is why baseline is important. We should look only for changes that occur during questioning and disregard everything else
Body language analysis always requires you to make judgements on whether people are doing something because of certain ticks or habits
Thank you very much :) I have a bunch of other psychology videos on topics that are normally not covered on my youtube channel
Ill give it a look. I have tons of info on body language and verbal analysis
That is why I always perform baseline tests before I start judging people. It is also important to get the other person to open up.
That is very perceptive. Once you start noticing these body language clues you'll see them every place
I never understood why it is common for people to see two completely different names and assume they were the same. Yes what I have read agrees with you. They are completely different. It is also sad that most people believe that they were created through terrible circumstances rather then born with the disturbance
I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it that much :)
Thank you :) There have been a bunch of questions on why he acted that way. Either way I thought it was a good example and everyone knew who he was, so I put it in
