    Red Wing Iron Ranger vs Thursday Captain: We've got a boot battle!
    In our second boot battle, we're pitting the old icon vs the new upstart. Yep, in our head to head comparison, we see if the Red Wing Iron Ranger is tough enough to stand up to the Thursday Captain.
    Get the Thursday Captain → manly.link/thursday-captain
    Get the Iron Ranger on Amazon → www.amazon.com/dp/B001IOETP4?...
    To be real with you, I love both of these boots, so this boot battle was difficult.
    Also, it's important to note that I've owned the Thursday Captain for over two years at the time of filming this video and I've had the Red Wing Iron Ranger for a few weeks.
    So if you were judge based on first appearance, the Red Wing Iron Ranger looks a lot better. But when I'm discussing style, I'm really comparing the Thursday Captain in its fresh form. Not so much after two years of beating it into submission. Though I still think it looks great.
    We did a detailed review of both of these boots over at BootSpy.com. Check them out here:
    Red Wing Iron Ranger:
    bootspy.com/red-wing-iron-ran...
    Thursday Boots Captain:
    bootspy.com/thursday-boots-ca...
    Our Boot Battle series compares boots in six different categories:
    -Style
    -Leather Quality
    -Sole Quality
    -Durability
    -Comfort
    -Price
    So which of these boots will be crowned the winner in this edition of BootSpy Boot Battle?
    Will it be the Red Wing Iron Ranger? Or the Thursday Captain?

    Adding my 2 cents as an owner of both types of boots. I feel like it's tough to compare these because they're in 2 different price brackets. I use my Captains in dressy situations (NOT a suit); my IRs for everything else. If you are an owner of both styles, you know which one is better made. It then just becomes a matter of when you wear each style. Captains are a fantastic entry into the boot world and can be dressed up; the IR are the workhorse, the 'gold standard' for no-nonsense boot people like me. Bottom line: invest in both pairs, but use them for different events. With the Captains, I feel sleek and stylish. With the IRs, I feel secure, safe, and invincible. Great video, as always.

    It's because of videos like these that I just ordered my 1st pair of "nice" boots, the Thursday Captains. I'm in Canada so they came in just under $300. I also ordered a cedar shoe tree to keep them in proper shape. I'm really looking forward to years of stylish use, I love the casual and/or dress appeal of these boots. Keep up the great content, much appreciated.

      @@BootSpy True. Thursday boots are kind've like the gateway drug into boot addiction. So they deserve special credit there. And a lot of that is their fashion sense and price, which enables it to be so approachable for a lot of guys who are boot fence sitters. It's hard to go from a non-boot guy to a $329 casual wear only Iron Ranger. You kind of need that stepping stone that is Thursday's $199 dressy/casual night out on the town boot.

      I live here in St. Paul, MN, less than an hour from Red Wing, MN. I’ve tried Iron Rangers, Beckman, Merchant and Blacksmith boots. They are excellent, but a couple key points. Red Wings will *never* be as comfortable as Thursday boots because of the hard insole. I also have what could be referred to as “low volume” feet, meaning they aren’t as thick in the middle of the foot bone. Red Wings are very high volume boots, meaning that they have so much room at the instep and the toe box, I have to use an insole to make them fit. Also, I have 3 Thursday boots and they are all extremely consistent quality. Red Wing vary a LOT from boot to boot. Sometimes the right and left are different heights, different widths, different lengths. I’ve had Red Wing “Factory 2nds” that were seemingly perfect, and full priced Red Wings that had clear differences between the right and left, crooked stitching, etc. Such is the nature of handmade boots, but in my experience, the Thursday craftsmanship is more consistent, and they are more comfortable and a better fit for my feet, as much as I want to love my local company...

    Got myself a pair of Iron Rangers last week and I've noticed I look forward to going outside more just to wear them again. I've been looking at Thursday boots as well as Oliver Cabell SB1, but Thursday don't offer shipping to my country and I had doubts about Oliver Cabell sizing so when I found a guy selling a pair of brand new Iron Rangers for around 240 USD (the normally sell for around 500 USD in my country) I realized what a steal it was and bought them immediately.
    What an amazing pair of boots!

  • @satchrocks34
    @satchrocks34 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    First of all, I wanna say, especially with how new your channel is, the production quality on this vid, the lighting, sound design is great! And you sound pretty comfortable in front of the cam! So keep that shit up man!
    Second of all, while I am generally tired of the comparisons between Thursday and the Iron Rangers (given different use cases), this video was generally well done and well explained. It wasn't overly biased in any regard and offered some good advice on care, etc.
    And while it might be argued the 3-3 tie is a little bit of a hackneyed result to this "boot battle" I'm glad that you ended up actually picking something in the end. Regardless of what you picked, I'm happy.
    Outside of how rough and tough these two boots are, you have to have a largely different style for each of them. If you're used to wearing more relaxed fit jeans, have a more rugged/outdoor type look, the IR is probably where you're leaning!
    While I have IRs and I don't have Thursday's, I'm really thinkin' about them Vanguards in Indigo! I work in an office (or at home) so I don't need some giant, heavy, rugged boot, day to day. It doesn't really work great driving my 6 speed, and I'm not on my feet enough to worry about how "durable" an insole is gonna be and if it will wear out and be uncomfortable. I'd rather it be mostly comfortable out of the box. And I'm not walking 10 miles on concrete every day so the soles are likely to last a while, regardless. And, honestly, it seems like Thursday is only making their boots better in the past couple years.
    Plus, between my IRs and Allen Edmonds Surrey Cap Toe, I have the rugged boot category pretty filled! And some more sleek boots would serve me better!
    Keep up the solid work man, your videos are great!

    • @BootSpy
      @BootSpy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree with you on the two different styles. The Vanguards are definitely the most interesting Thursday boot to me now. And I gotta get me some of those Allen Edmonds--those are fine looking boots! Thank you again for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!

    • @thejonathandoan
      @thejonathandoan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can vouch for the Thursday Vanguard in Indigo. The color and leather is gorgeous! Pretty good boot for the price, but if you wear them all the time (like I do), they'll wear out much faster than the Iron Ranger. Sure, they have a great patina already, but also the leather heel is beginning to split a little, so I'll need to get them cemented and nailed by a cobbler before I need a resole. Still, gorgeous boots that are very comfortable due to the poron lining in the footbed.

    • @satchrocks34
      @satchrocks34 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thejonathandoan Oh, 110%. I think, for quite some time, I've been biased by a lot of the people I interact with, that all own boots at significantly higher price points than Thursday. And while the marketing from these guys is a little over blown, the more and more I think about it, the more and more I realize that, for the price, it's a completely satisfactory boot. And the fact that they're quite a bit lower in price (before any discounts from other brands) means I'm probably less likely to worry about beating em up a bit.
      Another positive, living in Canada, is that I can get them on Amazon and have free shipping and returns. The shipping from TBC direct is even free, so I absolutely guarantee I'll be trying some of their boots, probably with a Stormking Outsole, in the very near future.

  • @P_Johnson338
    @P_Johnson338 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    You mentioned the Red Wing heal is cemented on, they aren’t. They may have cement in there but they are nailed on, which is why they have the sock liner over the heal on the footbed. They do this so you can replace the heal without needing to resolve the entire boot.

    It's also kinda hard to award points for cost, as the Captains are made in Mexico and the IRs are all-American made. Outsourcing work to Mexico or Asia will always be beneficial to the consumer and to the company itself. Again, I think these 2 types of boots shouldn't really be comparable....think of putting head-to-head a Honda Civic or Accord with a Land Rover Defender and comparing/contrasting their features. Two different uses, really. But neither a lemon or dud.

    • @satchrocks34
      @satchrocks34 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was going to make the exact same analogy with the cars!
      The use case for boots like these two should be quite different. Can you use a Land Rover as your daily driver? Of course you can. But the Honda Civic is gonna be able to drive you to work and get groceries just as easily as a Land Rover or a pick up (if we wanna keep things 'Merican).
      Hell, it's probably gonna be better using the Civic to do this. But are you gonna take your Civic off the highway? ABSOLUTELY NOT! That's something you can do with a Land Rover/Truck. Even comparing the price points of a Civic, to a general pick up truck, the same thing happens. Where I live, a crew cab Silverado starts at $38,000 and a Civic around $20,000. Given specific use cases, the Civic could even outlast the chevy.
      The same can be said for these two boots. Are you looking for a pair of big, bulky shit kickers that you're not gonna worry about effing up when you're doing yardwork and working on your truck? Buy some Iron Rangers.
      Do you want a pair of slim, sleek boots that are gonna look great for a night out on the town or even in a business casual setting? Buy some Thursday's! They're gonna more than fit the bill. They're likely to be comfortable right out the box, with that Poron/EVA insole/midsole action. Thursday's, in most colorways, are gonna look great with chino's, a nice shirt and a blazer. Iron Rangers might make for too garish of a contrast in that situation. Although, there are people that have pulled it off to varying success.

      It's funny you mention Civics and Land Rovers---I own the most raggedy Civic in NC. It looks about as beat up as my Thursdays. But I like your analogy---definitely different uses. And the made in USA stamp is more meaningful to some folks than others. Thank you again for watching!

    Versatility is relative. A pair of iron rangers can be your only boot working in a trade, and last forever while still looking presentable enough to not bring a change of shoes after work. Those other ones look really nice, but I wouldn’t work in those.

    So, you know, and I think this is an interesting story. Red Wing did not continuously make the Iron Ranger through the entire time from the mining days to present. They did act as a major provider of boots for military during 20th century wars, and always have made work boots of very high quality. They now have several subsidiaries which make these. They branched out into this hybrid type (work and casual type) in the 1970's. In my opinion Red Wing may well be the greatest American footwear company, but of course it has great competition too. That's kinda what America is all about. I'm subbing. I think you are diligent and have great potential here.
    The Iron Ranger model was a loving recreation of essentially the exact type of boot used by Iron Range miners, but it arose from the efforts of a Japanese designer in the 1970 s, and became a phenomena, partly, or initially, because of the amazing trend among Japanese consumers for retro gear of this type (it took hold all over the world basically). This has been going on in Japan for decades. They are big consumers of WW II style gear (A2 leather flight jackets; WW II service shoes from U.S. military design for soldiers) and also of old fashioned denim and "silkie" aloha shirts, or western wear or leather jackets from the 1950's. They sometimes call this type of fashion "Urahara fashion". It combines vintage items with casual street wear and has high fashion providers, and many stores both brick and mortar and online). John Lofgren boots may well be a good example.
    The design was perfect for Red Wing which decided to create a retro / "classic" line in the 1970's and completed setting this up by the 1990s. The Iron Ranger became the most popular overall within this line and probably because it so carefully followed design of work boots for miners. This product group also included at one time or another a model (I have one) called "Blacksmith" (very similar to an IR, without the toe cap), another called Beckman (in honor of Red Wing founder and boot maker), which is now discontinued (it looks a bit more expensive to make, but is very similar to the Blacksmith with no speed hooks, and a multi part sole.
    Stridewise has mentioned this in his blog:
    stridewise.com/red-wing-boot-japan/
    I'm not sure right now if this is the original guy, or a spiritual follower, but here is one of the key Heritage Line designers:
    www.redwingshoes.com/heritage-stories/stories-aki-iwasaki.html
    Mr. Iwasaki is following this path, where a loving examination of classic boot making is used to produce an amazing modern retro design. Aki says he likes design of the leather itself, which makes Red Wing perfect for him since they have an in-house tannery. I think one area where this Japan/America fashion trend may be found and which may eventually take flight in footwear is in the WW II boot designs (they are similar to RW heritage designs and therefore are both rugged and comfortable - they often use a last called Munson last, named after a doctor who designed an orthopedic design for footwear for U.S. military). The Munson last basically has a noticeably larger toe box which allows the toes to splay during the down stroke of the step action:
    www.usww2uniforms.com/9-6F.html
    and
    www.atthefront.com/WWII-USMC-Boondocker-Boots-p/usfnfb.htm
    I understand the latter is for re-enactors (At the Front has many bits of WW II garb and kit) and the boot is usually made by American companies to exact WW II spec to the extent possible today.
    There are both reverse leather (boondocker) and conventional leather models. The reverse leather model, or boondocker, was stipulated for "field" personnel and was sent supplied with a waterproofing compound called "Dubbing". The inner part of the leather (now on the outside) was to be soaked by the soldier with this compound, thus making the boots highly water resistant (a plus in warfare where soldiers do not have time to fuss with wet boots). You will see this type of reverse leather old fashioned boot on the feet of many soldiers in WW II photos. Many hundreds of thousands of these were made, and they still can be found in collections today. With the dubbing, the leather seems to survive well. I see even Ralph Lauren now has made a "boondocker" boot, so that is partly why I think this may be taking off.
    www.ralphlauren.com/men-footwear-shoes/boondock-suede-boot/305592.html
    You can probably tell I got sort of deep into this stuff. I still have not purchased boondockers or any WW II design, but do have several heritage type boots (3 are RW, one is Thursday, and one is Allen Edmonds, one of those great competitors) and an A2 flight jacket. They are very rugged, are comfortable, supportive and functional, and go well with many casual styles one could wear. I can sure understand why the Japanese love these styles. It's very much a nod to our forefathers who really did have some great ideas around footwear and clothing.

    I never understood the whole 1/2 size smaller argument, I have everything from the Vibergs, whites, Alden’s, nicks, Grant Stone, red wing, Thursday, etc etc etc (37 pairs in total, I have a problem) to the bargain basement 50 - 60 dollar boots that fall apart in a year ( I just love new things) and I always go true to size 12 Wide (E) and they fit perfect even after 10+ years of use (Red Wing Moc toe and multiple pairs of whites) and even some true abuse back when I worked for Calfire.
    I don’t know if maybe the width of my foot makes the difference but if I go 11.5 then I’m in pain with my foot crunched up even after months of use and being well past the break in period. I think to say always size 1/2 or a whole size down is just inaccurate because what works for 1 person may not work for another and vice versa.
    Just my two cents

    Well I'm from Germany, where there's no significant price difference between Red Wing and Thursday boots. Locally, Red Wing Iron Rangers are priced at 379 euros. On the other hand, Thursday boots are available on Amazon for 319 euros, but with an additional delivery fee of 24 euros, bringing the total to 343 euros. If ordered directly from the US, including tax and delivery, the cost is around 320 euros. Given these considerations, for those in Europe, the Iron Ranger seems like a more sensible choice. It offers greater value, especially when factoring in the convenience and quality associated with the brand

      Well boots built with leather footbeds and built unlined - probably wont get stunk up by ones sweaty feet. But if you really want to controll the odor i recommend cedar shoe/boot trees. A side bonus is that the cedar trees will also help maintain the boots shape.
      If you do decide to use trees, just remember to let your boots air out after wear, before you insert the trees.

    Question for anyone who’s bought a pair of Thursday Captains: the Thursday website says to order a half size down from your sneaker size; however, the sizing of my Iron Rangers makes me unsure about that advice. In sneakers I’m a 10.5, but in my Iron Rangers I’m an 8.5-two sizes down . So, going by the Thursday website’s advice, I’d order a size 10 Captain, but that would mean a big difference in the sizing between Iron Rangers and Captains (which could be true, I don’t know). I asked Thursday and they suggested that I stick with my Iron Ranger size of 8.5, so they’re suggesting that I ignore the advice about dropping a half size given on their website. Thursday was quick with a response to me and they were super friendly, so that’s awesome, but before I order a pair, I wanted to hear from some regular folks who have worn the boots. So, does anyone have any useful info on this? Should I go a half size down from my sneaker size, like the Thursday site suggests, or should I stick to my Iron Ranger size of 8.5 ? Thanks a lot, cheers. (sorry for the long message)

    I was very surprised, thought this was going to be a white wash for the Rangers! I was left thinking that you had got emotionally attached to the Thursday because you’ve had them so long!
    Looks I guess, are subjective thing of course . The Thursday is probably more versatile like you said, in possibly a more Urban setting, but I find the ranger just such a more substantial better looking boot. With denim, difficult to beat the look of the Iron Ranger, The quality, thickness of the leather , You can see many examples of stunning older Rangers,with awesome patina that develops over the years!
    I’m trying to think of the word, but I think the Iron Rangers just look a whole lot more impressive. Whereas the Thursday, looks, well, just a like a regular piece of footwear.
    In my opinion over the lifetime of the boot a couple of weeks of break in is nothing!
    Price is a point, because everybody has a different budget and my opinion of these boots does not mean the Thursday is a bad boot at all, and certainly great value!
    People mention Nicks boots, but when you talk about these you are then ramping up to another level so not playing in the same ball park. I’d love a pair, but not been in the position to blow $500+possibly on some boots. One day maybe!

    • @BootSpy

I've had a lot more time in my Iron Rangers now that we're in fall, and I think I'm already just as attached to my Thursdays as I am my Iron Rangers. I still stick with what I said in the review---I think for anyone who's shuffling between the two, Thursday is a slightly better option because of its price and style versatility. That said, I did pick up a pair of IR's instead of getting a 2nd pair of Thursdays, so that says something for itself. It just took me 3 years to get there! This video is just wrong or incredibly biased. The point for the "price" category goes to the cheaper boot because, what a surprise! they are cheaper. To exaggerate but following your logic, if you compare the Thursday and the $100 Amazon boot, the point in that case will go to the Amazon boot, right? . It is also interesting that almost all the subjective categories are going to the Thursday. I get the love that makes you really attached to the Thursday(i.e. sponsorship), but the iron Rangers are in a different level. Much better materials, construction, MIU, proven longevity, quality. Versus a style boot that looks pretty decent, not going to lie, but a tie is just not right.

    Comfort should go to the Iron Ranger as they break in, they will ultimately be the winner. The durability justifies the price. You said it, a pair lasting 40 years if not a lifetime. Iron Ranger clear winner.

      I'm about 3 months into my IR's now---I still feel the Thursdays are more comfortable, but the IR's are much more comfy than they were previously.

      Disagree. Yes, they mold to your foot and feel like a glove, but the shock absorption on the Iron Rangers is terrible. I've had my Iron Rangers for 18 months, and really want to love them, but the fact is they are the most uncomfortable piece of footwear I have ever owned due to the all of the joint pain caused by banging around with no shock absorption...and that's coming from a guy who has spent years wearing safety toe work boots.

      @@Bmoseley85 Get a Spenco flat insole they don't take up much room and make the boots more comfortable if your on your feet all day.

    STOP STOP STOP. Not even close. Nick at Stridewise did this already. You are comparing two totally different boots. That’s like comporting a compact car to a full size truck.

    Your winner for price was wrong heck winner altogether was wrong. Lol you have a boot that will last 30+ years and just need a re sole every now and then foe an extra 100-125$ and better quality materials. 100% red qing is the winner. But I guess if your just a hipster ( not saying you are) and want a nice pair to go out and dress like a lumber jack but can't start and electric lawn mower and drink 12$ 4pks of craft beer I question yea go get you a pair of Thursdays your not going to do anything that's going to destroy them unless your pomeranian gets ahold of them.
    I will day this if I was going out and wanted a nicer looking boot for a special occasion I'd go with the Thursdays actually going to get a pair just for that occasion some instances in my opinion the iron rangers have to much of a rugged look for certain occasions. I consider Thursdays more of a drees/casual boot. Were the iron rangers are more of a everyday boot can be used from anything to work around the yard or shop (depending what kind of shop) to going to the store to the local bar imnnot going to worrie about messing them up like I would Thursdays. But honestly the whole point for 100-125$ and I can go to a local store to get them pluse there going to last decades longer your winner is 100% red wings.
