I had the pleasure of guitar teching for Joe at a festival here in Birmingham one time, and met him on another occasion. He is one super nice dude, on top of being a great song writer and performer.

I saw this very same band in Cork, Ireland in 1988 and beyond, possibly two or three times around that period. Ever since, David Grissom has been one of my very favourite guitar players. His stage sound would make you think that there were two lead guitarists playing, yes he is that good! I have all of Joe's albums with this band on vinyl and CDs ... and more besides. You'll always have a great night when Joe Ely and the guys play in your town/city!!! Great artist accompanied by great musicians ... Texas' finest. Best wishes from Cork, Ireland.
The Grissom era was the best, with full respect and apologies to Jesse Taylor. There was just an extra rock edge that Grissom brought that pushed that aspect of Joe's musical personality over the top. I've been there for Jesse, Lloyd, Ian Moore, Teya, David Holt, and Grissom and loved them all, but DG is clearly my preference.
I toured with him back in 88 we eere his support band in ireland. David grissom jimmy pettit and i actually forget the name of the drummer .but he is playing with him here. Whats his name? They were all great players and people
David Grissom has always been a favorite..i remember seeing him with Joe on Austin City Limits and recording it on VHS...I think Jimmy was wearing pink converse high tops....this is a perfect band !
First time I ever saw Joe Ely, David Grissom and band was about 1990 at a waterfront street festival in Louisville. They played mid afternoon to a sparse crowd and tore it up. Too cool for the uninitiated to fully grasp but I knew they were special. I was there mainly to see Marcia Ball. She sat on the bleachers during most of Joe's set and I think he was showing off for him. Grissom was so young and he had such flashy guitars, pointy boots and all that rock and roll hair. so fucking cool. His old man was ground floor Humana Insurance...too cool that DG chose to be a guitar god over a captain of commerce. Sweet memories. Joe plays Louisville fairly regular and often ends the evening on a pool table. Knows his way around. Misspent youth.
Live at Liberty Lunch was and is one of the great live albums. To see this band after all this time in reunion is truly great. David Grissom's guitar playing is brilliant --as always. What a player. Thank you so much for this .
Never do I watch an hour and thirty-six minutes of TH-cam, but tonite I made an exception. I've been an Ely fan since the late seventies, and the Grissom era was phenomenal. Great reunion. Thanks for filming and posting... JH
Joe Ely is ALWAYS great and the band is awesome as well. I tend to agree with having Grissom as my favorite, but they all are well worth the time invested in going to a show...been to many of them across this great state of Texas...and somehow nobody mentioned that Charlie Sexton played with Ely in the early 80's when he was a kid...he blew us away...anyway, thanks for sharing the music
Joe's had so many great musicians in his bands; when I say Grissom is my favorite I don't mean any slight to any of the others. Another great band was with Ian Moore on lead guitar and Reese Wynans on keys (with Davis McLarty on drums and Glen Fukunaga on bass, if memory serves). That band smoked! Moore wasn't with Joe very long, though, and I only saw that band once.
Had the genuine pleasure of having Mr. Ely along with Stevie Vaughn play their acoustics together at a party we had in Lubbock in about 1980. Sax player Johnny Reno who briefly played in Stevie's band says he thinks he remembers being there as well. Very nice men.
I first saw The Joe Ely Band at the Cotton Club between Slaton & Lubbock in 72. Great show, Great Texas artist. They ran advertisements saying "Bring your ice chest and your bags (lids - grass) - we are outside of the city limits and no law will interfere!".
Holy smoldering show! Love this version of Ely. First heard him in 80s with Bobby Keys and Grissom. Have loved him and Grissom ever since. Great rhythm section. Seems like periodically Grissom shows up with Ely and it's always a blast. Most recently saw Flatlanders including Ely with Rob Gersoe on guitar who plays with Jimmie Dale and he's fantastic, too. Thanks for this treat.
Wow! Thank you for this. The audio/visual is superb and it was so good to see this latest iteration of these guys. I finally turned on to Joe Ely (and David Grissom) in the late 80s during a blistering performance at Slim's (owned by Boz Scaggs) in SF. "Lord of the Highway" kept me awake and, probably, alive while hauling cars for Mercedes in the middle of the night across the desert southwest. "Live at Liberty Lunch" and "Live from Antone's" are the finest live albums I own. Grissom's a national treasure.
Slim's , not sure how many times he played there .But I was there on I think the first time he came in on the " Love and Danger " tour .As I recall he had both Grissom and another guitarist . Could have been Ian Moore . Blistering good show .
Great! Best band Ely has ever had. I've had the privilege many times to stand 50 feet away (or closer), watching one of the best guitar players in the world. And this rhythm section is one of the best around. Oh, and Joe's no slouch as a performer either! ;)
I beg to differ with you, Bill, but you should have been in Lubbock in the early '80s. I won't bore you with how good Joe was back in the day with Jesse and Smokey Joe, Ponty Bone on the squeeze box and Lloyd Maines on steel pedal... Saw him ride a horse onto the stage at Coldwater Country and Linda Ronstadt sing with him at the speedway. Cotton Club, Tornado Jam, on and on. Singin' the West Texas Waltz with Jimmie Dale and Butch... "la la la la la la Idalou," New Deal, Floydada, Slaton, Tahoka, Roosevelt etc. You can't imagine how incredible this guy was on stage in those days with that amazing backup band......
Bob Boatman I first saw Joe in the late 80s when he had these three guys, plus Bobby Keyes on sax, backing him up. The instrumental duels between Grissom and Keyes were something to behold, but even after Keyes left, Grissom continued to generate plenty of heat as the only instrumental soloist. But, I saw Jesse many times since, before and after the Live at Antones era (and Lloyd and Ponty less frequently), plus I have all the old recordings, so I do have plenty of appreciation for the original band. No one can make a steel guitar scream like Lloyd, and Jesse was a hell of a player, no doubt about it.
Bob Boatman My opinion of the difference between Jesse and David: many times I experienced "Yeah!" moments while watching Jesse - i.e., yelling "Yeah!" when Jesse pulled off an exceptionally fine solo. But only with Grissom have I experienced "Holy Shit!" moments. As a half-baked guitarist myself, I could at least follow what Jesse did; he did it far better than I could ever hope to, no mattert how much I practiced, but I could at least follow it. But with Grissom, I've had more jaw-dropping, "how the hell did he do that?" moments than I can count. Just in case it's not clear, I loved Jesse; I really did. Grissom is just something extra special.

I have seen every incarnation of the band, including David and Bobby Keyes when I lived in Dallas ( at the Fast & Cool Club, etc.). Of course Grissom is technically superior to Jesse (IYO). But unless you were there in Lubbock in the early '80s, you can't even imagine.........................

Even to this day, though, Joe remains something of a cult figure; although his cult is larger than it once was, he's never achieved the widespread success that he deserves, in my opinion. So, whenever I get to talking music with newcomers to Texas, I tell them that they have to check out Joe if they want to know what Texas music is all about! I still feel like I'm letting people in on a big, wonderful secret!

Saw him in 1996 5 minutes far from my house in Milan Italy in a place called, with a lot of fantasy, Saloon :-) The band played an over 2h set including all the songs of the MASTERPIECE LETTER TO LAREDO ( Teye!!!!!! ) and other great songs like fingernails musta notta gotta lotta, dallas, the roads goes on forever, raw of dominoes and the most underrated classic rock song SETTLE FOR LOVE. At the end of the concert i rember the audience ( over 1.000 people ) went crazy for Oh boy shaking the chairs in the air..uh...a thought for the great outlaw Jesse Guitar Taylor and his blues
One of the best concert i have ever seen..togheter with U2 in 1985 The Waterboys and R.E.M in 1989 and Bruce in 1999 2003 2005 2007 2008 2009 2010 2012 2013 and...2014!!!!
first saw Joe Ely at the 23 East Cabaret Ardmore, PA 10/23/92 with James McMurtry opening. On 5/7/93 saw Joe at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philly with Lucinda Williams opening .....two incredible high energy shows. Joe'sthe best. Agree with comments about Grissom, he's another dimension.
If I remember right David Grissom started off his career playing with Joe Ely? I think he was about 14 or 15 at the time. Same thing with Charlie Sexton and Joe Ely.
Both David and Jesse Taylor is/were wonderful players. No knock on Grissom, I just prefer Jesse's style. Some like peaty Scotch Whisky, someone else prefers Wild Turkey Reserve Bourbon...it ALL good!
