I really wanted one that streamed over Wifi, I was pretty disappointed with the Kaiweets camera that claimed it could do that and then actually didn't. I still want to use the thermal drone in real life once I have all the paperwork done!
As a professional Thermographer it was interesting to see how full featured that cheap thermal camera is, quite impressive really. The software seemed quite stable which is often the biggest problem with most systems.
Sweet. I'd love to see more drone videos from you, would be fun to see what you can make out of a bunch of old parts! Just FYI, there are libraries to use the mini cameras with a Pi, and you can use the analog video output to output the thermal video to an FPV VTX
Fairly certain you can fly in a cave too as an "indoor space" where drone law doesn't apply! I do appreciate that you touched on and actually followed the laws though, even with as silly and restrictive as they've gotten to be. Too many would have just completely disregarded them.
How times have changed. I remember attaching a little BST thermal module to a RC airplane to make one in the early 2000s. It was old enough that it had a gas engine that used a mix of nitromethane and alcohol but modified to use nitromethane and diesel once it warmed up. The video was recorded as still shots on it but also transmitted as video over RF to a display in the controller. Also recorded regular video. ❤
flir is prop trash but the lic ran out now CHina can build theirs and ofc they're much better since there is now a race to build the best and the cheapest
hi, i tried something similiar some months ago using a dji phantom 3 and also a thermal camera from hikmicro, the e20 plus, in combination with a raspberry pi 4 + wifi adapter to stream the video since you were unable to test the signal interference from the drone while flying, in my experience it gets really bad, unuseable, id say no more than 50m before the wifi connection is lost, but local video recording worked fine
I picked up a thermal camera, recently, that attaches to my cell phone. It works great, but the battery doesn't last that long. Pretty cool to play with so far. Not gonna attach my phone to my drone tho..... my luck is pretty shitty.
I just bought a second hand thermal camera brick from an old fire fighter department in the country at a charity auction and strapped it fully integrated into a hexadrone. Custom RCs can be automated so easily. I use it for architectural purposes, in the winter, it's a very good tool to see where heat escapes a house. A lot of people do the obverse and look for cold spots from the inside, but one should do both, and the RC is the logical step. I used to climb a ladder, but that ain't fun at all. All in all, 1500 eu pesos and it works even better than a commercial one from 2021 i saw in use. The old thermal cameras might not be as fancy as the new ones and they're quite finicky, but ... man, you can't beat integrated prism and glass, true heat maps (not an overlay) ... and it being a firefighter's unit, it's meant to work exactly for what i'm using it. As fabricobbled things i've made, probably one of my best tape jobs. :)
Not sure how it works it the US, but in Norway we need to give the National security authority, NSM a heads up before we are flying a drone with Thermal Camera.. Its really strict the Drone rules in most of europe though... Can get huge fines, and get the drone confiscated.. Alot of tourist have lost their drones flying illegal in Norway this summer as you need a proper sertificate to do so
I agree. I have been saying this for years as well. Makes you wonder why they are not using drones with thermo cameras to find these things if they exist.
It's not truly viable for anything but close in drone work. However, if it had a video out port, that could be wired to a drone vtx, and that would give you range and cut the latency. Very cool video.
The used computer store that are in most areas where they carry used cameras, I bought a apple 4 for only $40 dollars for my old Flir Thermal Camera One
I have a drone and i want to add a dipole to the drone and a yagi antenna both vertically polarized to extends its range. Havent done it yet but will in the near future
I'm not sure what they mean by "calibration", but the clicking noise you usually hear with thermal cameras is a Non Uniformity Correction. Calibration is done at the production facility and can't be done without a known temperature source. It's a bit misleading for HikMicro to call a NUC a calibration
While its admirable to not want to break regulations, something tells me if you flew that drone 20 or 30 feet in the air nobody would (should) care..... I mean if i can throw a football up that high, why does the FAA care?😂
I like how your overcame paperwork issues - first by using drone like a camera crane and second by flying indoors. You just need some friend with very big hall.
Unihertz just released the jelly max, it's about the size of the iPhone 4 but quite thick. They claim it's the smallest 5g phone on the market. You might be able to get them to send you one idk.
There's a newish category of no-license-needed drones - "actively tethered" drones - but it looks like it's only for public safety organizations (so, firefighting drones "on a leash" don't need the firefighters to be 107-licensed.) Likely doesn't cover your work currently, but they've expanded the scope a few times, might be worth keeping an eye on...
I saw that, and yeah it seems like it's only for cops and fire. Apparently they're used in stadiums as well to get a flying camera platform that's powered from the ground, but that probably falls under the indoor flight rule.
hah.. I guess you're in a good place to be a fugitive or hide from Predators at least.... 😉 interesting results by the way. great for many potential uses sometimes, especially checking heat leaks from above your house in winter etc.
Thermal cameras are also getting cheap! Flir no longer has a monolopy on imaging cameras. I just got a 32x24 for $40. I need it for electronics purposes and the resolution isnt really necessary 256x192 can be had for less than $200 which is fantastic.

I'm waiting for Christmas to get my youngest son a thermal cam. He has everything else 😂 already. Even a 2023 digital radiation detector 🦅 I want him to build a Pip-Boy from fallout. He has everything for it I'm even stockpiling titanium to build the housing.
8:35 OMG - You YOU!! I so entered this thinking oh great another YT’r f’n up my hobby. NOPE - kudos. I’m so impressed. If you need a certified 107 pilot let me know
Can you connect the thermal camera to a mini mobile phone and put it in front of the drone camera so instead the normale view you see the thermal view and you have the 2km view.
Actually come to think about it, an iPhone 12 mini motherboard with just a screen and lightning port assemlbly is probably lighter that 90g, just need to worry about bringing DC power to it
got one of those infarai cameras for 89 bucks. crazy how cheap these are. the ones from china dont have to play the ITAR game either so theyre wayyyy better
One of the features of that case that I'd like to know is does it have space in it to cache the cable and USB extension dongle? My IR cam has enough space in the case to keep the USB-C to MicroUSB adapter. It's just in the space in front of the camera within the case, it would be nice if there was a 'slot' to store it. That adapter is not one that came with the camera, it was something I needed because I switched from a camera with a MicroUSB charger port to a phone with a USB-C port. (Had I known I would need to switch to that, I would possibly have gotten an IR Camera with the USB-C port, but as you say, it's sometimes handy to have the adapter anyway. Also working on getting my FAA Remote Pilot license. Lots of material to cover yet.
One thing I would wonder is if you can use the phone mounted ir camera with a Raspberry Pi Zero v2. I'm expecting it's not supported by the stock software, for the Pi, but there may be other options. If the camera, pi and a battery that will power the Pi and camera for under 50 grams, you should be good with the 200 gram drone.
you could add a WIFI booster to your camera to get further range and if you fly the drone early in the morning and at night. The picture would be better if you use black hot in black and white mode or red spot mode.you could also change the reflective temp settings to.
i was going to troll you for the title, but you are too cool for that. i have been into rc off and on since the 80s, but most off, way off, but i did get into dronnes back in 2013 with some lower to mid grade stuff. i was going to purchase a drone with a 640 thermal camera but it was going to cost about $3500. so now i am building one. for much cheaper, granted it wont have some of the features, but it also wont have some of the big brother restrictions and spying. to keep cost down i am going with 256x 192 thermal on the first build. should be able to hold position, nav points, 35mph max speed, 33min battery, no limites on elevation and about 6mile range at first. also, i have a nv ir camera as well, the above is the goal
Cool! Thermal sensors have gotten cheaper, I've played with some low-res ones before. I'd like to do more with the drone, just have to get all my license paperwork to actually use it commercially.

Thanks FAA. Wonder how big of a kite you would need.
It's not the same rules but kites and balloons are also regulated, just FYI. They're not unrestricted just because they're tethered/unpowerded
I posted this in a separate comment, but since it applies in this thread...

I personally had good experience with HIKMICRO, the pocket camera is nice all rounder and it's micro lens really steps up the game for the price.
Thanks for doing what you do, I always enjoy seeing the variety of projects pop up on my feed 🤟

Thermal is not FLIR. FLIR is a company that makes thermals.
