Fairly certain you can fly in a cave too as an "indoor space" where drone law doesn't apply! I do appreciate that you touched on and actually followed the laws though, even with as silly and restrictive as they've gotten to be. Too many would have just completely disregarded them.

Sweet. I'd love to see more drone videos from you, would be fun to see what you can make out of a bunch of old parts! Just FYI, there are libraries to use the mini cameras with a Pi, and you can use the analog video output to output the thermal video to an FPV VTX

How times have changed. I remember attaching a little BST thermal module to a RC airplane to make one in the early 2000s. It was old enough that it had a gas engine that used a mix of nitromethane and alcohol but modified to use nitromethane and diesel once it warmed up. The video was recorded as still shots on it but also transmitted as video over RF to a display in the controller. Also recorded regular video. ❤

I just bought a second hand thermal camera brick from an old fire fighter department in the country at a charity auction and strapped it fully integrated into a hexadrone. Custom RCs can be automated so easily. I use it for architectural purposes, in the winter, it's a very good tool to see where heat escapes a house. A lot of people do the obverse and look for cold spots from the inside, but one should do both, and the RC is the logical step. I used to climb a ladder, but that ain't fun at all. All in all, 1500 eu pesos and it works even better than a commercial one from 2021 i saw in use. The old thermal cameras might not be as fancy as the new ones and they're quite finicky, but ... man, you can't beat integrated prism and glass, true heat maps (not an overlay) ... and it being a firefighter's unit, it's meant to work exactly for what i'm using it. As fabricobbled things i've made, probably one of my best tape jobs. :)

hi, i tried something similiar some months ago using a dji phantom 3 and also a thermal camera from hikmicro, the e20 plus, in combination with a raspberry pi 4 + wifi adapter to stream the video
since you were unable to test the signal interference from the drone while flying, in my experience it gets really bad, unuseable, id say no more than 50m before the wifi connection is lost, but local video recording worked fine

However, if it had a video out port, that could be wired to a drone vtx, and that would give you range and cut the latency.

I'm not sure what they mean by "calibration", but the clicking noise you usually hear with thermal cameras is a Non Uniformity Correction. Calibration is done at the production facility and can't be done without a known temperature source. It's a bit misleading for HikMicro to call a NUC a calibration

There's a newish category of no-license-needed drones - "actively tethered" drones - but it looks like it's only for public safety organizations (so, firefighting drones "on a leash" don't need the firefighters to be 107-licensed.) Likely doesn't cover your work currently, but they've expanded the scope a few times, might be worth keeping an eye on...

One of the features of that case that I'd like to know is does it have space in it to cache the cable and USB extension dongle? My IR cam has enough space in the case to keep the USB-C to MicroUSB adapter. It's just in the space in front of the camera within the case, it would be nice if there was a 'slot' to store it. That adapter is not one that came with the camera, it was something I needed because I switched from a camera with a MicroUSB charger port to a phone with a USB-C port. (Had I known I would need to switch to that, I would possibly have gotten an IR Camera with the USB-C port, but as you say, it's sometimes handy to have the adapter anyway.
Also working on getting my FAA Remote Pilot license. Lots of material to cover yet.

One thing I would wonder is if you can use the phone mounted ir camera with a Raspberry Pi Zero v2. I'm expecting it's not supported by the stock software, for the Pi, but there may be other options. If the camera, pi and a battery that will power the Pi and camera for under 50 grams, you should be good with the 200 gram drone.
