DS1 Gargoyle halberd is one of the best weapons in the game and you can get it easily towards the beginning. Definitely my go to weapon almost every time I start a new run *also i love how the R1 attack can kill trash mobs before they even get within striking range, that overhead chop is just👌
Also it's one of the strongest Chaos weapons when upgraded down that with 10 Humanity. No joke as there are heavier weapons and have higher requirements upgraded down that path which do less damage that the Gargoyle's Halberd. Even on an Intelligence or Faith build, odds are that you'll get more out of a Chaos Gargoyle's Halberd than you would an Enchanted, Divine or Occult one if you can maintain 10 Humanity.
The transformed version of it has most of the same moveset as slashing halberds do, but faster because it's BB after all. I will concede that aesthetically it's a scythe (it's basically the same weapon Logarius has). It's been awhile since I've played BB but I'm pretty sure the only classic halberd attack that the hunter's axe has is the classic spin to win. Neither of them behave like halberds in their untransformed mode with the church pick being a weird thrusting sword and the hunter's axe being well an axe, so I'm not going to include that side of the weapon for either of them. I'd say the church pick in it's transformed mode is just a halberd cosplaying as a scythe while the hunter's axe is an axe cosplaying as a halberd.
I still have a soft spot for the mistranslated DS2 Scythe, the large blade and moveset really resonated with me, and I like that it’s easy to get to at McDuff.
The biggest upside that I remember about #2. Santier's Spear; once it's broken it has infinite durability. That's a big thing in Dark Souls 2. If I wanted to clear an area and boss, I would normally need two weapons because one tends to run low on durability.
The helix halberd use to be able to be power stanced with other halberds. But due to the combo with the mastodon halberd it did waaay too much damage. Generally, I now like to use the channeler’s trident with the helix - both for its attack up ability and its good status buildup.
Doesn't the trident spin on a 1h heavy attack? That's gonna be a lot of hits in power stance. Shame DS2 has none of the consecutive attack damage stuff from later games
I struggled a lot trying to use the Dragon Halberd for a playthrough on Elden Ring. I just personally hate how slow the heavy attacks are on most Halberds. If they were a little faster it would be fine, but later game bosses sucked fighting because I had to rely on the rest of the move set. Which was actually pretty good on Malenia, which allowed me to beat her on my second try, but late game was a struggle. It made me wonder if I should've used nightriders glaive.
I remember when Dark Souls 3 released. Gundyrs Halberd was by far my favorite weapon, especially for PVP. Almost everyone was using the Farron Sword with that ground spinning slash, and I would just out space them and punish that first spin over and over. It was hilarious absolutely shutting them down because they only knew how to press 1 button. I joined a fight club once and took out 10 or so guys in a row before I lost.
I remember ending so many fight clubs and spanking ganks with that weapon. Even after people figured out how easy it is to parry the weapon art, just don't lock on lol
The ds1 black knight halberd is my favorite. I got it from the leaf shield knight first run, carried me even after i got the gugs & leo ring. It & the gugs are the gold standard for quality weapons imo. Didnt know that about the helix halberd, if i notice it on a future ds2 playthru ill definetely try it
I'm surprised that the immolation tender didn't make it into the list. It's a weapon catalyst so automatically making a great sorcerer weapon, it gives sorcerers access to fire damage should they want it without having to resort to pyromancy, and like Heyzel's pick it pairs really well with the sorcery weapon spells, particularly with soul greatsword it covers so much area with that one spell. Granted Heyzel's pick can true combo with soul greatsword and old moonlight, but the immolation tender has better spellbuff scaling; in fact I'm pretty sure it has the best scaling spellbuff in the game making it the best sorcery weapon catalyst in the game for pve. Also the transformed state for the church pick is literally just a halberd that looks like a scythe. With the exception of the heavy attack it has the complete halberd moveset. I will always hold the opinion that the church pick is the best skill weapon in the game with the Rykkuo being the only weapon that can compete.
You did the GSS dirty, it straight up has the highest AR out of all the halberds in the game and due to being a dexterity weapon it has the best bullet AoW scaling, outside of ranged and the charged attack I would argue the GSS is objectively better than the night rider glaive in every way.
I put it in the S tier how is that doing it dirty? Also I can understand why someone would put it above nightriders but objectively? No. Nightriders get more range, higher AR with strength infusion, better synergy with skills like flaming strike and braggarts roar, slashing damage, bonus damage on horseback and a faster heavy attack.
@@youwy keen GSS has a higher AR than a strength night rider glaive, this is actually to a point where using flaming strike on the GSS you actually get more damage on it keen rather than heavy as the follow up does more damage, even without the strength bullet scaling) Phantom slash and ice spear preform better on it due to being a keen focused weapon. (The AR of night rider does get higher when two handing at 94 strength but that is a clear waste of attribute points, at 80 Dex/str even when two handing the GSS is still 10 points in damage higher, 2 handing only effects the R1/R2 abilities and not L2 or crits so it’s not an ideal measure of weapon AR) Braggart’s roar, horseback and charged heavy are definitely something you can give the night rider glaive. You gave it an S which I can easily agree with, there is just a few things stated that caught my attention. The GSS could have been done a little more justice here. If you are way over leveled however a quality nightrider is a better weapon I’ll admit yeah dex builds kind of suck for the most part but the GSS is like the exception
Nah, in DsS best halberd is war scythe. Despite it's called scythe, it's model is in line with Gundir's. It is better because of slash dmg type, to whitch there is 2 weak to archstones (Latria and swamp). Blunt is really good only in one arch, which is the skeletone one. First arch is balansed in in defense, and smithing one is weak to pierce. Also, war scythe for some reason gets better damage for backstabbing - you can just try it on miners. It get's 3x of what mirdan can do
I was really hoping for the Mastodon because that thing carried me through my first successful DS2 playthrough like nothing else. (And I wasn’t disappointed)

Its 601 AR at +5 with 10 Humanity is just outside of Chaos weapon AR's at 11th iirc, for its weight thats absurd. You simply can't go wrong with a Chaos Gargoyle's Halberd if you can maintain 10 Humanity.
Technically the Lucerne, gundyrs, Syan, roaring, Mirdan, guardian, black knight, splitleaf, helix and Santier are not technically halberds. Fromsoft is kind of bad at classifying weapons

You can literally not hit them at all and still apply sleep, leading to free charged heavies. Not that I condone this strategy. If I catch you using this and still win you’re going to the dung pie dimension 😂
One other neat thing about Santier's Spear is that it never breaks once you've broken it. I think either the durability stays at 0 or jumps to 999, but once you reveal its true form it becomes unbreakable, which given how DS2 handles durability can be nice for logistics
