Loretas war "sickle" should have been a catalyst weapon, it's how she uses it on both encounters. Hell if they really wanted it it could have been used for both spell and incantations since loreta leaves a spell based faction (int) for an incantation based faction (faith and some fundamentalism)

Are catalyst weapons good in previous games though? I don't recall them being used much.

The Nightrider Glaive also deals more damage on horseback iirc, so it would be more useful when traversing the overworld.
All weapons deal more damage when on horseback.

One use you aught to mention for the Dragon Halberd is that it's incredibly potent at low levels. The 130 lightning damage doesn't scale with weapon upgrade or stats, and at low levels it doubles the AR to make it one of the most powerful low-level weapons. It also deals frost status, so if the normal damage wasn't high enough for you, the frost can help you clean through even some tougher enemies.
true. it starts to lack late game but insanely good start of game. i did a full playthrough with that weapon. it was alright overall
@@Phoenix_9902 It's pretty easy to get early game too - way easier to get than the other weapons that so similar things.
I never cheat to make builds, so the fact I can legitimately take a starting character to level 20 and use a blood-resin'd morning star to bleed out the Dragonkin Soldier in Sofria within a couple hours of play is nice.
It's my go-to low level invasion build. Powerful, but not as stupid as, say, dual Eclipse Shotels or Antspur Rapiers that are clearly donated by phantoms.
Found this early on my first playthrough and it carried me through 90% of the game.
I know it was a glich.... but i truly loved this halberd with the cross bow getting the lightning/frost. The drag hal was the best

with regard to loretta, sometimes devs have to deal with something that's too strong... and they don't have time to retune it AND check it...
it's safer to just make it weak, since weak wapons won't break the game.
it's possible the war sickle was in this unfortunate position.

I found out you can get two regular halberds and power stance them pretty much at the start of the game. Just pick the vagabond class as they start with one. Then once you get 1200 runes to spend head to the merchant passed the pumpkin head troll you fight on the bridge from warmasters shack. Had fun with this build early game until I found better weapons.

This weapon gives me conniptions. I LOOOOVE the visual design and moveset. It's a very pretty weapon, and perfectly scratches that "polearm that can cut and thrust effectively" archetype. Moveset is dope too.
I tried SO hard to make this damn thing work just because I love how it looks. Only way I could for meta-level pvp was on a build with 55/37/20 dex/int/str build where its AR is actually pretty high. Pretty niche build all just to make a shitty weapon average, and it's 100% still getting carried by the halberd moveset/motion values.

The shotel has shield pierce on every attack. You can make this even better by infusing it with an element of some kind. Like lightning, fire, magic or sacred
It's too bad Loretta's War Sickle wasn't a casting weapon in some way, they definitely could have incorporated it as loretta's slash being more like a stance type skill, with the heavy being the slash and the light being a cast, and if it was like that for the ash of war version it could have been a really cool way to diversify builds by being able to make a weapon into a caster and we'd finally go back to the ds2 days when staves didn't have an atrocious moveset

Halberds were amazing on the battlefields, we've got all the drawings of middle age European battles past with rows and rows of spearmen and halberdiers. Makes sense they're also good in games still! I use them to recreate the typical European soldier, Halberd, 2 hands, perfect.
I just wanna say I love how in-depth you go into these videos. Incredibly informative even if you don't typically use the weapon class being discussed.
I'd love to see a greataxe breakdown sometime, I know they aren't that great in PvP but I find them tons of fun for PvE.

Halberds are my favourite PVE weapons. I think the common moveset is the worst because it's just a bigger axe. The Banished/Commander/Dragon moveset is definitely the best as you get the actual Halberd experience (axe and spear combined). The swordspear type moveset is really good too if you like sword spears.
Take this information if you like playing with roleplay and gameplay as a priority rather than damage numbers. Average (secondary moveset) Halberd enjoyer, out.

For anyone who still wants a lightning halberd to use I would suggest the militia shotel. While it doesn't have the highest lightning damage out of the halberds, the lightning chip damage stacked with the 40% shield pierce makes this a great weapon against any kind of shield

Unbelievable they managed to make its own aow weaker than the infusable one, thats how you know some scaling was pulled out of your ass 😔
Would love to see a detailed breakdown of everything that is nerfed in PvP (AoW's, talismans, buffs, etc) since there is so little reliable, consolidated data for this anywhere
Working on this.
A couple things to note;
1. Posion Armament also is affected by the Arcane scaling of the Ripple Crescent Halberd, and that doesn't use any consumables. I know that this works because I was able to Poison Godfrey (not the shade) in three hits with like 36 Arcane (Dex/Arc build), and that wouldn't be possible with just 70 Poison Buildup per hit.
2. The Lucerne has gotten several buffs that make put it into the same camp as the normal Halberds with unique properties:
a. It now has anti-block on most attacks
b. It deals EXCLUSIVELY Pierce damage like it did in DS1 and DS3, so it pairs well with the Spear Talisman like the Pickaxe or Rusted Anchor for less weight.
I'd argue that change sets it apart a lot, yes the damage is still on the lower end, but all attacks now benefit from the Spear Talisman.
Guardian swordspear scales so well on keen that 99 dex swordspear has more ar than 99 str 99 dex quality swordspear somehow

i was running it on lightning for a while at RL 50 pvp, then swapped to keen with electrify weapon and it does about twice as much damage.

I really love using helberd, it is my go-to weapon in most of occasion, except in a really confined place like grave, or when I need to deal with Crystalians.

New subscriber and so I’m glad I found your channel. The detail and depth of you information is so incredibly helpful, so thank you. I’m new to FROM games but already have nearly 1000 hours into Elden Ring, and even with that much play time I still find the weapon scaling, status scaling, etc. so damn confusing esp. with differences in PvP vs. PvE. Any chance you’ll do a video for great spears? I’ve been loving the lance recently, but I’m really super confused about the best way to run it. I messed up and am still on my first game save, even though I’m NG+3 so I’m at level 515, and can’t figure out if it’s better to run things as quality or to do split damages to get some affinity damage in PvP.
At that kind of levels for PVP, it is certainly that non-split damage is better. You also get the added benefit of being able to buff/grease your weapons.
@@Chrightt Thank you. I thought it certainly must be the case, but understanding how the incantation weapon buffs work in terms of scaling seems as complex as everything else in the game. Thank you again for the effort that you put into these. I’ve spent hours today going through Elden Ring University with you as instructor, and you’ve also prompted me to start using discord just for your channel.
The sad part about the lucerne is that according to its description it should have percing attacks on all its moveset AND the shield piercing capability of the shotel, which would make it a very good weapon despite its low AR.
It’s honestly a tragedy what they’ve done to Lucy. Like, the description (and past games, tho I don’t remember the shield pierce aspect-though it definitely makes sense it would) is off on every aspect.
Also, if they wanted to change up the Lucerne from being a counter hit monster, they could’ve just turned it around and give it strike because you’re hitting with a mace. Or mix in a rotation as part, or all, of its heavy attack chain.
Also, I find that having overhead attacks being on both light and heavy on its 1-handed attacks is really limiting. A sweep would be nice.
Lucky for you, they changed it, it’s got the shield piercing!
@@EldenLordOrvik7790 it does! But, sadly it’s shield pierce is much, much worse than the shotel halberd. Like pathetically worse, I think I saw someone test it on the partizan/great shield godfrey knight at bridge camp and it was like 48 damage I think?
He only did the overhead attacks though, and I think the description says that its pierce is for the horizontal sweep (2nd part of the attack chain, iirc) so maybe that has a better damage value? I’ll try that later, but I have a bad feeling it’ll be the same…
Loretta war sicle was weapon i used a lot in my first playthrough and it did great. I really liked it
Banished knights halberds move set plus being able to use any ash of war makes it such a good weapon
For those curious, a cold halberd will begin to outdamage a cold Banished one at a 50/40 str/int split, which only grows the larger the discrepancy between the two.
This means you'd be better using the regular halberd over the Banished knight's if you're two handing with an equal spread or if you're using the setup Chrightt provided for the cold nightrider glaive and want access to the poke r1's for rollcatching.
Is the range done using the running attacks? How does swordspears standing light compare to the others? If it is a frame slower than the poke lights like you said, that’s a big thing to consider comparing it to poking halberds in the keen options. Also thank you for all your hard work, I’m sure the Elden Ring community appreciates all you do!
Took the halberd that i got from vagabond all the way to the end of the game cause i like halberds in souls games, made it quality cause i like quality builds (and my first playthrough was blind, so i didn't know they were suboptimal), honestly really appreciated the reach it gave me, let me hit mohg during his big aoe pool attack, and the poise damage helped against melania, let me play aggressive because i could interrupt her when she'd jump to my side/flank.
Do you think you could make a video about War Cry and Barbaric Roar? Specifically, showing off the charged heavy attack for each weapon class when under the effect of the ash of war. As well as any quirks like if they deal regular or thrust damage for spear talisman synergy. It would be nice to have a resource like that available when trying to decide if those ashes are worth using on certain weapon classes.

Golden Swordspear one of my personal favorites for the moveset. Then the Dragon halberd when I have an enemy where I can consistently get the weapon art off on
Lorreta's war sickle actually does have a place. Building around the weapon, you have a high enough strength stat to wield nagakiba and other high strength requirement dex weapons such as curved greatswords and the intelligence requirement is right in a good range for using the cold infusion on a dex build. This means a high damage lorretas slash on a dex build (not necessarily amazing) but also a very long version of the guardian swordspear move set. Basically, long guardian swordspear on a frostbite nagakiba build. I didn't do any math, this is just something I came up with off the top of my head
I can't imagine it being better than just running frostbite nagakiba though

i honestly wish they would buff the damage and attack speed of the lucerne, it's always been my favorite weapon in these games and seeing it's fall from grace is heart breaking :(

The only thing that stuck out to me that wasn't mentioned is that the militia shotel has one of the highest ARs with bleed or poison affinity. That combined with the shield piercing makes it a choice option for arcane hybrid builds.

Halberds with the poke r1 moveset have true combos of jumping Heavy into poke r1, storm stomp into poke r1. Also, poke r1 into catch flame and offhand estoc both work well.

@@DakkaSap has this combo been nerfed/removed cause I've been trying Flaming Strike on Nightrider G. (for the first time admittedly) and haven't been able to reap the rewards of anything, but a fairish Flaming Strike. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?
I've been using the Banished Knight's Halberd for a while now, and I think it's pretty cool.
Now, since we are on the topic of halberds, I'd like to complain about the Lucerne. You see, a Lucerne, historically speaking, refers to a type of polehammer with a relatively short back-spike, which was primarily used to hook onto the enemies's weapons/shields/limbs in order to manipulate them, while the hammer part was used as the main "hitting" part. Meanwhile, we have war picks, including the "bec de corbin", which is essentially a "polepick" with a long spike and a small hammer head on the back, it's main use being attacking with the piercing spike. Knowing this, why did FromSoft look at this two very similar weapons and decide that they would use the hammer one, with the shorter hook-spike, as the piercing halberd, instead of it being a striking halberd or, you know, using the actual piercing halberd for that job? I know it doesn't actually matter, but it bothers the history nerd in me SO MUCH! ARGH!
Golden Halberd with a bashing great shield is super fun. Two hand to buff/smash, 1H/Gshield shield-skill/melee is a gas. Dragonclaw Gshield for extra style and lightning damage.
You can use a Lightning infused Pest's Glave as a throwback to the Demon's Spear

One thing I was wondering, do you by any chance know how much poise damage the Swordspear R1 does in PVE?
It's not as much as a halberd, but it's more than a thrusting sword, it kinda falls in the middle ground, maybe you had a more precise answer.
It's the same as regular Halberd: 9.25.
BUT there is a different stun modifier called "damage level"
Halberds = Damage level 2: medium stun (larger stagger)
Swordspear = Damage level 1: short stun (slight stagger)

Guardian swordspear also has a jumping r2 to r1 true combo when one-handed in PVP
Wow so the Nightrider Glaive is longer than the BKH. I always thought the range on that thing was visually mismatched.
I _REALLY_ hope that they fix the bugs with Rallying Standard negating damage from certain weapons skills soon.
Halberds are my favourite weapons, so I've been using it since I first got a hold of it, and it's _SO_ annoying that abilities like Nebula & Starcaller Cry become totally or partially useless while the buff is active.
Finally, I get to have some fun with the sickle - look for it in it's natural habitat..lol. square 12...
Dragon is a fantastic low level pvp weapon. I use it to farm rune arcs outside of boss arenas

When are we doing bow? My current understanding for bow is they are only used to proc status. Only Horn Bow can do dmg and Jar Cannon can snipe (idk why ppl use Jar Cannon).

I like Halberds and polearm weapons. Which is my favorite choice of weapons. But in a game like Elden Ring and pvp. I don't know how other feel or what their opinions are with them. But I find it sort of slow and easier to read and see coming. Which would be prone to dodging and parrying. Not saying that I would never lose to Halberd or Polearm players. But it seems weaker because of that for me. That is why if I did play Elden Ring. It would have been daggers or even one hand axes and stuff. Probably claws and fists too.
