    Hi, I'm Dutch. I more than 200% agree with what you said about the UK. Nobody hates the UK, but it was VERY mediocre. Europe also expects the UK to do better, because there are so many UK pop and rock legends... Send somebody who is REALLY FKIN GOOD!! Like you said, we're rooting for you. Eurovision is a place of love at the end of the day.
    Also, about Moldova: she was incredibly charming and adorable (also in interviews), and people liked that I think.

      German and just commented the same, lol. It is true that we also have slightly higher standards, I think. A smaller country sending an okay song with an okay stage show might get some sympathy points, but if the UK does it, it does feel like a letdown because we know there should be a budget, and a far bigger talent pool. So if they send something that looks like they couldn't be bothered (those plastic trumpets were a nightmare...), it just looks as if they're too cool for school. But I do want them to do something awesome every single year!

    • @MartijnPennings

      A lot of emphasis is placed on secondary things when a country does badly, like politics, how well-known the artist is, how big the country is. I think it has less to do with politics than a lot of people think. Israel and Russia are NOT beloved countries in a lot of places while still getting points. Also, saying that a country sent in mediocre songs in the past I think doesn't influence the publics vote that much. The Netherlands had about 15 years of mediocre songs and artists and Europe hasn't held it against us when we started sending in better ones later. I think it has most to do with 1. send a good singer 2. send in a good song that has a personal message. Like Duncan Lawrence said two years ago: "music first". I do think there's something to say about the order in which the songs are played, but the organization has to make a balanced show as well, there's always going to be countries that have to perform second or second-to-last. For every theory there is a country that defies it. My aunt from Middle-of-nowhere doesn't care about all this, she will vote for the song she likes the best.

    I just want to say that I live in Russia and watching our "professional judges" give 12 points in Moldova was very embarrassing. I watched live broadcasts with various bloggers and commentators and they were also very upset, because they understood that the votes were cast only because Moldova was produced by Philip Kirkorov. In our country, it is not possible for young, talented performers to break through to the stage, since the past generation has settled down tightly and does not want to give a chance to new people. And that is why the judges gave so many points to Moldova, because Philip Kirkorov is very famous among the older generation and has a huge influence on them. The judges gave 12 points to Moldova, but the rest of Russia would obviously give votes to someone else. Please do not judge badly about our country just because of the idiots in the judicial panel, the rest of the people think differently.

    • @anowlonedge1815
      @anowlonedge1815 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Right?! Most people were outraged. I was watching few russian bloggers who covered the final and all of them said that it was a disgrace. Also about 12 points to Greece from televote. A lot of people reported that there were some issues with voting. One had to send an sms for an artist and then send "1" to confirm the vote (which doesn't make sense to me in the first place). And so people would send 1, would not get a confirmation and send it again thus voting for Greece, cause Greece was number 1. Russia gave 10 points to Italy in televote and I suspect that if not for voting mishaps - Italy would get 12 points from Russia's televote. Wouldn't change the outcome of a contest of course...but still...interesting situation

    You also have to take into consideration the fact that the people of the UK CONSTANTLY moan how Eurovision is a joke, how it is too political, how the bloc voting is constantly "screwing them over" and after a while, when someone constantly complains you want to distance yourself from them so it makes sense that from that perspective the UK wouldn't get votes. Sure, Brexit might not have been a positive event for the votes in Eurovision but that isn't a valid excuse for the BBC's complacency.

      @@19932603A It was markedly worse than his performance at the semi-final, and even that was pretty out of tune and vocally struggling. Then compared again with the studio version it’s remarkably bad - especially since the UK doesn’t have to compete before the final.
      Other than Moldova (unsure what was going on there - at least the song didn’t involve much actual singing) the singing in the final was at least mostly competent - even purely on vocals James deserved last place.

    • @oldvlognewtricks
      @oldvlognewtricks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Tesla-Effect Unsure how you mean by ‘as if he wasn’t British’ - as far as I’m concerned he just couldn’t hit the notes, or was unprepared for live performance (the semi final performance was somewhat better, although still bad).
      Agreed that there were a lot of other factors about the staging and such that also contributed - I only highlight the vocals as something objectively and concretely wrong. Singing in tune is fairly fundamental to a live vocal performance.

    Whilst it’s popular with The Gays, I do think there’s a danger in ‘camping up’ the Eurovision Contest is such an obvious way. France and Switzerland never featured on my radar as I was loving Lithuania and Iceland, both of which scored really highly in the U.K. public vote but not on the leaderboard
    If we want to do well we need to recognise the cultural taste differences we hold. European taste is so diverse, but whilst we want to represent music the U.K. likes, I think we need to lean in to what other countries listen to.
    I agree with another commenter that the BBC do us no favours feeding in to the idea that Eurovision is camp and ridiculous. It’s latent homophobia to dismiss something as frivolous because it’s popular with a LGBT+ crowd.
    I began watching in the 80s when it was much more of a National event, like football.

They should either pull up and try to win this thing - genuinely do their best - or stop wasting their Big Five contribution monies and pull out of the event altogether for the time being. The longest string of second places and Top 5 rankings throughout decades was not an accident; all it takes is having the right people doing the right job - and (shockingly!) having fun along the way.

    On sending established internationally successful artists: These people have carefully crafted public images and they are used to being in control, influencing the song writing, the staging etc.. crwating their own story around them. Part of their sustained success is, that there is this universe created around them, where they are the super hero. At Eurovision they would only be a number in a line up. I think most of those artists - or their management and PR team - wouldn't like that. Also, I think they wouldn't want to risk not winning because it might be a damper for their carreers. They'd bring shame to their home country etc. It's too much of a risk for someone with a successfull streak on their own. They have too much to lose.

    • @Aleksa_Milicevic
      @Aleksa_Milicevic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was the exact point the late Tel Wogan used to make. There was no way whatsoever for established UK acts like, say, Elton John, The Police or Rod Stewart to appear in the Eurovision back in the day. Even the likes of Sandie Shaw and Lulu begrudgingly accepted to enter the British NF.
      That being said, even outside of individual artists' PR bubbles, the Eurosong was generally deemed naff and outdated, on one hand, and, on the other, a neat opportunity for British songwriters and composers to showcase their work on pre-Internet European TV.

    • @manub.1068
      @manub.1068 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would also add that established artists not doing well might also generate even more backlash from aggressive, unpleasant, racist or overall trash fans. I don't think this is in their thoughts, but that would surely also happen.

    Since Eurovision, I've heard 3 songs from Maneskin - Zitti E Buoni, Torna a Casa, and I Wanna Be Your Slave and tbh, they could have played ANY of those and won. Their writing is just as strong as their performance ability, stage presence and charisma. And Torna a Casa has a completely different tone - it's a slow burn and it's STILL just as strong. I think they're gonna be the new ABBA, in that their career is only going up and up and they'll be the most successful Eurovision winners since ABBA. I'm already trying to get tickets to see them on tour.

    I remember gasping when Malta got her televotes, she was low on my scoring sheet but for an 18 year old those pipes were insane. In fact this was a very young year with Greece also only being 18, Finland being mid twenties and Italy in their early twenties. I was rooting for Iceland to win, I think they were robbed of 2020 (it was going to be between them, Russia and Lithuania in my opinion) but 4th is fantastic considering they weren't even there, chilling with iPad dummies in their hotel room (Looking forward to seeing Dadi Freyer live in 2022!). 2022 won't top this year at all but I think we're gonna enter a new age of Eurovision if we're to take away anything from Italy's win. Great Review/Aftermath! x

    Yeah, the UK singer also just didn't sound good. His voice sounded to dry, which may have been a problem with the audio mix but it just sounded like he had been drinking, smoking an partying for two day and just woken up hung over. Which, of course in itself isn't a bad thing to do, its great, if you don't have responsibilities the next day. But it just isn't good for vocal control and agility and resonance properties in a live vocal performance. May be he thought it would give his voice more "edge" or character....who knows. To me it just seemed careless and sloppy. Trying to phone it in.

People were getting bored, and the ballads that were maybe 3rd or 4th in the clump sucession were getting unfairly judged for it.

    I just want to say, as a Greek, in terms of the Greece-Cyprus 12 points every single year, even if I don't like it being that way either, it's because Cyprus is considered "part" of Greece. We speak the same language, we have the same national anthem and traditions. Many Cypriots go to Greek Universities to study every year and generally we're like one people, so it's like voting for ourselves almost by voting each other, because even if we don't win at least the other can and it will feel the same to most people. So it's not just a "neighbors" thing that we vote each other, it's like voting our family over strangers first, so we're extremely biased even if we should be voting for the best song but as you said neither of us can ever win with just those 12 points.

    Everything you've said is 100% accurate, but there are a couple of things I want to add.
    I can totally see the vote for Blind Channel & am not surprised they finished so high. Those of us who like rock & metal usually have very little in Eurovision. If we're lucky there's 1 song per year. This year they were 2, & 1 won! It's understandable that, when it's high quality, we'll vote for it, even when it's not the type of rock or metal we listen to everyday. We're just so grateful that a rock/metal song is on stage.
    When the shit storm about drugs hit, it was the French gutter press who promoted it. Barbara Pravi showed her class by congratulating Mäneskin, saying they won fairly & she supported their victory.
    Hurricane actually have vocal lessons whilst running on a treadmill! That's why they can sing & dance so energetically without damaging their singing.
    I loved Embers & still listen to it. It's going to be my go-to party sing for a while. I don't think it's should have won & can see why it finished as it did. I really didn't like the staging& thought the choreography was dire & lacked energy. I'd have preferred if the music video was recreated on stage. Next year I'd like to see someone like Celeste with a Stop This Flame type song or even Dua Lipa, but I think they'll be too big to want to take part.

    • @angelaburrow8114
      @angelaburrow8114 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tesla-Effect I remember Marija Sherifovic, she has such a strong voice & Molitva was an incredible song, she was a well-deserved winner. She was my clear favourite in 2007, way ahead of my 2nd choice, Les Fatals Picards with L'Amour à la Française. I didn't know Marija was linked to Hurricane. I supposed she would be a great mentor, having competed herself & being a great singer too. I'd not heard of Hurricane before this year & have heard that they sometimes sing whilst running on treadmills. No wonder the vigorous choreography had no effect on their vocal strength! They were powerful & pitch-perfect in every performance & rehearsal. 👏
      I thought that a lot of the competitors this year were really supportive of each other, even more than usual. We've already seen one single released with 2 of them collaborating (Blas Canto & James Newman have released an English version of Blas' entry called I'll Stay) & I suspect there will be a lot more collaborations in the coming year. I wouldn't be surprised if Italy & Ukraine worked together, for example. Måneskin were popular winners, both among professionals & fans & it was sweet to see them so enthusiastic for Go-A, just the same as Hurricane fan-girling for them. I'm not surprised to see it though: the competitors were like as at one stage, enthusing about the competition from the outside. Now as performers, they still love the competition even though they're part of it. All of them also have an affinity for great music, so it's understandable that they would appreciate the other artists. 🙂

    Before 2017, Portugal had almost always bad classifications. There was always a lot of justifications about politics in Eurovision. But the reality is that our song selection process was not good. When the organization started inviting promising songwriters to participate, the quality of the songs participating in the national contest started increasing. Gradually, credible artists have started to appreciate the national contest as the opportunity to get themselves known in Portugal/ Europe. With this process, Portugal won in 2017 and got the 12th place this year.
    The most famous artists in the country are not willing to risk their image (the portuguese singer this year even stated that in an interview), but there are a lot of newish /not so known artists that are willing to take the risk.
    UK seems to have the same problem. Added that everyone knows the quality of the music industry in England, making it much more blatant, that there is no effort put in. The singer seems to be a very nice person, but his vocals were not so great, the song and staging were not great /memorable. There have to be deep changes in the organization, especially the selection of the song. There has to be a open selection process, to get the public involved and invested in the selected song.
    The Big 5 countries should, at least, have to perform the whole song in the semifinals. The qualification process to the final is a major opportunity to get people to be invested in your song. By the final, everyone already has their favourites. About the politics... well if Brexit is the problem, what was the excuse before Brexit?

I hope the BBC is going to change the way they select not just the songs but the singers - there's such great music in the UK, I can't believe they can't find someone who is able to captivate the public!
    As for Italy, I'm so happy my country finally won and I will definitely try to snatch the tickets for the final. The drug allegations from France really left a bad taste in my mouth - I get it, Italy and France, we have a big rivalry in basically any aspect of life and we're not "friends", but making up bullshit drug accusations against basically kids at their first international experience is ridiculous and just makes you a sore loser. And we know a thing or two about coming so close to winning that you can almost smell it and then coming in second or third :p
    (Also: I rotfl'd when you said you had the worst pizza of your life in Milan. SAME.)

    Missed Eurovision so much and this year was so great and strong🥲💖 I almost cried at the end of the final show, hope the next year will be this strong too! Thank you for your analysis of the ESC, you are amazing and YES DAMIANO IS SO HOT! P.s. I don’t know why but after the ESC every single day I wake up with Mata hari, one of the best entry of Azerbaijan ever 🔥👸🏻

    Baltic and Slavic countries not giving many points to Ukraine, cause no one likes countries voting for their neighbours.
    Any other country: oh, wait we weren't supposed to vote for our neighbours?

    I think Tusse thought he was gonna get a good result just because he was Sweden's representative, and Sweden usually gets a good result. 14th is still pretty good but anyway.
    I'm Swedish btw

      He was really good, but the song was "meh", very forgettable. So I think he didn't make it higher just because of the song.

      I really liked the song but it definitely had "good song, not the winner" vibes. Like, I'll happily add it to my playlist and listen to it, but I wouldn't have chosen it to win over some of the other acts.

    So first I wanna say thank you for the update video so happy you did this!!! I get all my Eurovision tea from you both so I'm so happy but I have to share my opinion about the UK wanting to send adele. So to me I agree with both of you in the sense it would be pointless to send her cause 1. They could see it as cheating 2. What would be the point given she is a massive name. 3. What would she gain from it given she is already a international star . And 4. If she ranks lower is that saying other people are better then adele. I really dont get. From what you both have said over the years the uk has never done well and if they really wanted to have a chance. then they need to send someone who can actually sing and perform it wouldnt be hard to do that. The guy who was sent look like someone dad who started singing like 3 weeks ago and got a good shoot getting into Eurovision. I mean my god. love cheers and hippads gurl 😘

      Eurovision is not about sending established singers. A lot of countries send previously unknown singers. It's not about winning, or wanting to winn. It's just about having a good time, making every country seen and showing that Europe is united in history and culture.
      Bosnia and Herzegovina don't participate in the Eurovision because they didn't pay the dept they own to the EBU. Eurovision is very expensive and most countries send mediocre acts so that they don't win. I don't really think the UK wants to win right now, so... 🤣

    • @kenneth42994
      @kenneth42994 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I've heard that most countries actually like coming second cause it cost ton of money to put the show it self. Which so fascinating to me. 🤣 and also if uk wanted to win the need to go send a true performer honestly

      @@kenneth42994 to be honest if the UK would send Adel with a good song I would be like: I'm not voting for the UK. 😂😂 If it's a good song and someone unknown I'll prefer it

    The thing with overthinking it or considering aspects the general viewer doesnt on a casual sunday night, is why there are juries. Except they do a really bad job rewarding quality beyond trends

    It felt like a breakup when Switzerland didn't win for me, I was v emotionally attached to the song
    I think england chose James because they liked the song, like I can hear it on capital FM, so it was a song built for radio and not for Eurovision

      I believe he was chosen for us by the pro's. I can't remember us having a competition to choose our entry for 2020 or 2021. I agree it sounds like a radio track though, rather than a competition winner.

    American here with British friends who have gotten me into ESC - this year was a really hard one in terms of standing out. I've watched ESC live for the last 5 years and taken a look at the numbers from years farther back than that, and this year's results were WILD to me.
    There were so many songs that in other circumstances would have become the song with the "ESC narrative" - Fallen Angel and TIX's tourette syndrome, Birth of a New Age and Jeangu Macrooy's Surinamese background, Growing Up is Getting Old and Victoria's father's ALS diagnosis, to name a few - and would have gotten an almost kind of pity or sympathy support in the votes that just wasn't there this year.
    Also the effect of the "missing year" due to the pandemic I don't think can be emphasized enough. The world is and has been Wild'n'Out with Nick Cannon since all this started, and it seems like the public tastes have really drifted into not necessarily surprising directions, but rather statistically unlikely ones. I think there's also an argument to be made that since there was a missing year, for the first time in everyone's lifetime since this whole thing started, a LOT of people expected something not just good but great, and expectations were cranked up to 11 where some years you can show up at an 8 and win the thing.
    The art directors also need to be required to get feedback from a vocal coach of some sort when composing their staging. A lot of the middle-of-the-line songs in terms of vocals sound fantastic when the artist is allowed to stand in one place or move as they're comfortable, but the second you have them running or dancing or being lifted when that isn't what they typically do means they're struggling that much more to hit both high and low notes. Also! Adrenaline affects your voice! Low notes you can normally hit when you're calm go right out the window the minute you get a shot of anticipatory nerves, and high notes are harder to control because your airways are activated on top of normal singing. As far as I can tell all the songs that struggled on stage didn't struggle like that in acoustic sessions or calmer, simpler performances, and it seems like no one in the delegations or on production side of things seems to account for that when both picking a song, a performer, and staging.
    Normally we end up moaning about ballad hell, but it seems like 2021 was banger hell and my personal theory is that really screwed with how people voted, since normally songs like SHUM, 10 Years, Zitti e Buoni, and Dark Side would be the "novelty" songs that you'd have to just hope people ended up liking to give them a fair spot in the show. I think people swarmed the votes for them thinking like a normal ESC year (which this definitely wasn't) where those songs stood a good chance of falling through the cracks, and it overbalanced and left songs that normally would be common fare for ESC out in the cold.
    Anyways, the tl;dr is yes. You pretty much got it down pat. UK got the points they got for sending a middle-of-the-line song when expectations were high with a performer that struggled vocally either due to staging or nerves or both. Moldova was what it was, a fun song with a charismatic singer and solid staging that outweighed whatever vocal quibbles there were. Malta got lost in the milieu, which to me is a shame, same with San Marino, but both were solid performances that, again, would normally be solid contenders. Nothing is normal in 2021 and I guess ESC isn't exempt from that either.

    I'd love it if UK sang in a minor language like Welsh or Scots Gaelic for a change. You don't have to do Morris dance-EDM but we had 4 non-English songs in the Top 5 this year and Måneskin is charting all over Europe! What is common for all of them is they had confidence in their performance and what they do and who they represent, can't say the same for James unfortunately.

    I believe Greece got the edge over Bulgaria because they ended up with more televote points. I believe that's the new tiebreaker, whoever gets more televotes gets the higher placement.
