I'm also really glad you talked about artists that I feel aren't really talked about enough (like Megara and Atle), about the song I can not get enough of (Cha cha cha) and the absolutely hilarious (and weirdly enjoyable) dumpster fire that was the Belgian national final.

After listening to most of the songs you spoke about, I can say that Cha Cha Cha by Kaarija is my absolute favorite. I have been playing it non stop since this video. Although Kuumaa with Ylivoimainen has been a close second so far.
And then theres Croatia with Mama Sc.... I watched the performance and thought I was secretly dosed acid.

I'm so late but about Robin in UMK, he's the name that has been popping up every year when finns complain about how obscure the names in UMK are in Finland. That's kinda what YLE is going for, Uuden musiikin kilpailu translates to "Contest for new music" and they have wanted to make it not only a national selection but also a platform for new artist to get visibility. I think part of that has been the idea that we won't win anyway, so why not give new artists a chance rather than worrying about the eventual success. Sure, known artists have competed regularly, but people like Erika Vikman and Bess have become pretty big since UMK participation. I don't think all of the criticism is fair, but it's a common talking point around UMK to ask: Why are we not sending someone we already know could be successful with the right song? Robin has been known since his break as a 13 yo in 2012 and is quite a phenomenon in Finland still. I was disappointed in the song choice, I do believe he has potential to represent us in the future if YLE agrees to take in past participants.
Benjamin, on the other hand, has been active around ESC in finnish prodcasting, watch through shows and such. He too I can totally see on the ESC stage one day, even more so than Robin, but again, that would take YLE compromizing and an awesome song and performance. I think it would be possible to see a one artist UMK with either of them, where only the entry would be chosen in the contest. We've done that with Saara Aalto and Rejman&Darude. The problem with those two years was that they were not exactly the top choices for representing Finland in the first place so it never felt all that genuine, and the results speak for themselves. YLE made the decision to pick the artist without public voting as a reaction to the aforementioned wishes for a known artist to compete, but the choices were unpopulat to say the least. However, with the right artist I do see that working. I can also imagine an Allstar UMK with specifically known artists and artists who have competed in UMK before.
