Depends on the speakers imo. mk, Triad etc make great inwalls but the price point is pretty high. Pretty much all the ones that have closed backs.

I would think the biggest issue is in wall can’t control what the volume of “cabinet” they are in so they make the crossovers narrow the sound field so it works as well as possible in all most common installs. What a nightmare. But for me it still sounds great for my media room / living room. And I like that hidden look better. I listen to music on a different system

I use to think the same with in wall speaker but after multiple videos and readings on the subject from different sources I think the in wall could be the same or even better then towers depending on the integration and room design. However never did a comparison myself, but now i would definitely think about them in my future upgrade for my dedicated space.
Here one video I find that explain it quite good:

What about in walls in lath and plastered walls? I wonder how it would sound?

Some big brands actually sound crap for inwalls. I find if you build a baffle and insulate it right. You can get some really good sound. But the baffle has to be made for the size of the drivers for the right acoustic performance. It vertically diy audio. It's best to test the speaker baffle outside the wall using some sound measurement eqwipment before installing it in the wall. This where you can find the best tuning

Sonos Port + any sub you want
You do not have to use a Sonos Sub
I hooked a player piano up to Sonos

Wow, Joe N Tell's initial question could not be answered. That is by far THE question to ask and the answer to be understood. There are many OK inwalls and very few good / excellent inwalls. Erin Audio Corner proved that recently (with DATA. I proved it to myself throughout the years with many an audition... most of which had me running for the door). That said, they're out there... read the reviews (the very critical reviews that is) and then Listen for yourself (at the very same height you plan on installing them at... the placement / height makes a HUGE difference).

In walls are built to play loud, while floor standing speakers is more of a complete package. Bookshelves are somewhere in between the two. In walls are constructed for a closed in room. 4 walls with a door. They sound best in this setting IMO. After all that's been said and typed. I still think the pinnacle of home theater is to have a dedicated space with in walls. I think this is the only option that doesn't have diminished returns. Why? You could at least sell the house with your theater room.

This is largely wrong. You do have to buy good speakers, but in-wall speakers don't suffer from SBIR, and they can measure very well. The downside is they're difficult to aim obviously. I prefer bookshelf for LCR and in-wall for surrounds and Atmos. Add a couple subs, and it's outstanding.

I agree. I think a lot of in-walls get perceived that way because a good portion of that market prioritizes form over fuction when it comes to the speakers, so they might not spend much to get great sound.
And on the point that a manufactures top level in-wall vs top level floorstander not being close... well obviously they probably aren't in the same price range either. At some point the speaker becomes so large that you'd naturally move into a baffle wall situation or something. Those $10,000 Focal premium in walls would be nothing to scoff at, even though there $250,000 top level floorstander would be better.
And personally, I absolutely love my $1,900 each Klipsch THX 8000L in-walls. They measure well. The point is there is nothing intrinsically wrong with In-Walls and have some acoustic advantages even. Now... I would agree that a $400 in-wall is probably not as acoustically good as a $400 bookshelf. I'm not sure that is always true, but generally, yes. The design constraints do have a cost.
I'm surprised on his take that the slim KEF speakers sounded good. I thought the slim on-walls would be the worst option on cost-to-performance.

There are ways to make in walls work well. If you are going to use your existing walls, get an in wall that has a back box included, that can insure you have the right volume for the drivers to work in to, and you get rid of pipe resonances from long cavity behind the speakers; that also eliminates your wall from becoming part of the radiating part of your speaker.
If you are doing a new build, build a baffle wall and use speakers designed for that use ( no baffle step compensation ), those work very well.
I agree that in walls that are open back installed in drywall can have real issues.
It is all in the execution.

@@joesabato9736 Yeah, a lot of the premium in-walls have enclosures... including my Klipsch THX8000Ls.

I know giving a thumbs down doesn’t mean anything on TH-cam anymore but this guy gets a HUGE thumbs down.
This is an opinion of a guy that did no critical installation or extensive research with different types of in wall / ceiling layouts. This kind of fodder does a disservice to those that don’t have a ton of time on their hands to go from place to place to audition various setups for themselves.
Very frustrating how someone can get a following on social media and possibly deter sales of a great solution for those that don’t want their footprint of the room compromised by floor standing speakers or trying to fit a center channel under their display.
I have been into high end audio for nearly 4 decades. It’s placement, room acoustic and pairing the speakers with decent hardware. Baffle boxes go a long way with in wall and ceiling speakers if you’re building a new room or modifying/ renovating and existing one. This guy doesn’t know what he is talking about

Can you give some specific suggestions? I'm finishing my basement & doing home theater with 100" UST projector. I want a 5.2.4 system all recessed in wall, even the subs. I see good things about even budget brands like Polk & Monoprice Monolith series. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Klipsch has good inwall speakers. Just just figure out how to point them at listener position. Running at 80 Hz and get a really good sub
