@J Thorsson I have the aus 8, it came with an uneven grind on the edge, so it's not too sharp, but it does just fine, I have no intention of retiring it ever.
I've had a tanto point Recon 1 for years, and I've carried it and used it for all types of edc tasks, and it shined for me. The Recon 1 is in my top three favorite knives. Good review tho. Different strokes for different folks.
I always forget that I customized my recon 1's .then I see a review and they do come a little rough ! I take out the second finger groove , re-profile the pocket clip, do a lock spring job and move the teflon washers to the other side and smooth all the inside parts . They work really smooth and easy then !
I love when folks mention "EDC" in every video for every knife. "EDC" is whatever YOU feel comfortable carrying. Whether it be a Lawman, Recon, or even an XL folder like the Voyager. That being said, I own all 3 mentioned and even a Spartan as well. All have worked as EDC for me (although I do not like the "pocket catch" on knives like the Spartan). I do prefer the Recon though (especially when I "fixed" the pocket clip) as my EDC. It has never let me down and is a topic of discussion when I use it for jobs.
I have the CTS-XHP version of this knife and it has been my EDC for about a year because I like the Tri-Ad lock, the looks and big blades and everything you said about this knife is spot on. Especially about the clip, the ramp of pocket clip really is too curved down and I also had to bend my clip.
I think this size knife is perfectly fine for edc! The average multi tool weighs more and isn't as slim in profile, either. Thanks for your dedication!
The Recon 1 is one of my all time favorite knives , I like big knives , and I've e.d.c.ed this knife for years , I have all the blade shapes and all the different size knives. For me , its the perfect blend of edc , tactical and self defense, I can just carry one knife and be happy with its performance in any cituation . I just bought the Canadian Blades Exclusive Recon 1 with s35vn , a flat ground spear point , and a Frickin Awsome Satin Blade , I've waited for a blade like this , for a long time , can't wait to hold the bastard. If this is the first time you've heard about the knife , you need to buy one fast , they only made 400 in each blade shape, and the sale has been going on for a few months now , so I don't know how many are left . They cost $140.00 Canadian , which is $118.00 US , plus shipping , for me , in the US , came to $137.00 total, wish it was XHP , but still a good price . I'd love to get the other 2 blade shapes , trying to save , just hope there still there . Hurry , if your interested ...
S35VN is better at rust resistance while XHP can rust around the same as aus8, for what your doing outdoors stuff related to waters i would go for s35vn.
DvBattlegears sorry late reply. Never had issue with my knives and rust in the 30+ years I have had one in pocket. I don't know S35 steel so I can't compare.
I have never had trouble with coldsteel clips. I wear fire resistant pants for work and the are thicker then most jeans and iv never ran into the problem some guys have. Idk I never just shove it in my pocket with any brand. I get it in the pocket then push outwards ever so slightly with my thumb as I push it in my pocket. I have lost 2 benchmades out of my pocket so tight clips are welcome. Great video, your cut test are the ones I think are correct.
Got mine about 8 months ago, wish I would of got one years ago. I've had many different brands of knives and NONE of them compare to the toughness of this knife .
Hi Cedric hope you and Ada are well. Another great video. I am about to purchase the Recon 1 and live in the city Tampa Florida and I will EDC this when I am out and about. Knifes laws here are almost non existent lucky us :-)
Any video featuring basil is an instant thumbs up. Glad to see another video up. Damn shes a big girl. Not quite my cup of tea but I can appreciate it for what it is.
ThisIsAPrettyLongUserNameWhyTheFuckWouldHeDoThatSoThatEveryoneWouldThumbsUpIt I’m an addict. They have different style blades and G10 colors. 2 of them are the 5.5” XL models clip/tanto. Why do you ask?
Didn't mean it as an insult, i'm just getting into the hobby as well, just wanted to know why so many of the same knife. Do they get use or are they just collectibles?
ThisIsAPrettyLongUserNameWhyTheFuckWouldHeDoThatSoThatEveryoneWouldThumbsUpIt No problem. I use them all. There’s something fun about pulling out a folding pocket knife with a 5.5” blade. I love it when people ask to barrow a knife out in public! Hahahaha. Enjoy collecting.
I want one but wouldent get one due to the fact that i own a benchmade 757 vicar. They would fit the same rule but the vicar is a liner lock and has s30v steel. I prefer s30v and a liner lock for real world use. Also the ergos are better on the benchmade and the blade length is more legal at 3.8 inches long. Just under 4 here makes it more legal in florida. Great review man. Keep it up
I kind of like the cold steel pocket clip because you won't lose it but it is a hassle to get it in and out but if you look at the cold steel Finn wolf that clip is an ambidextrous pocket clip I think they should just have that on their nice instead of the really small pocket clip that one's a bit better than the smaller pocket clip it's got a little bit more ramp it's still really solid
I've heard that s35vn by cold steel crumbles during the work? Is this true? I'm going to buy recon 1, but can't find this in xhp for a good price, thinking about s35vn. What can you say about s35vn by cold steel? P.S. sorry if i made any mistakes, English is not my native language
I EDC 5 folders at all times. Two of them are cold steel. A SRI tanto, and a new recon 1 tanto, partial serrated. Of course I don’t normally use either, as the recon 1 is for tactical, or fighting if you will, and the SR1 is the tank ! These are SHTF knives. Always be prepared !!
So many reviews talk about the humongous size, so I was pleasantly surprised when i got mine. For someone who occasionally (or more often) need to bring a knife, the size and weight is near nothing.. For someone who want to edc a penknife (which might or not get used), it's a bit much.
If there's one thing I've learned it's to ignore ANY reviewer talking about size. "heh this is certainly not a small knife by any means, pretty stout actually.." when talking about a literal keychain knife that barely fits three fingers on the handle. The lanyard hole on their "large knives" are much better suited to a keyring lmao The Recon 1 is not huge - maybe slightly large - but you can hand it to any child or house wife with no affliction towards pocket knives and you just get "yeah it's a knife, neat" while the "knife guys" rant and rave about how jumbo something with a 4" blade is. They ALL do it and it gets old really fast
Was wondering about the s35vn ! I find the s30v to be reinvented 440c At a stupid hype high price ! I looked it up and the folding knife size blank the so called knife maker put in the cnc clone knife making machine is $20.00 ! Not $200.00! Not $400.00! Not $800.00 (reeves ) ! I modify the recon 1's to work really good ! Pocket clip ( smooth under the spring bend the spring to 1/8 from the g10 ) lock spring (take a few hundred pounds off leaving enough for blade retention) and the handle ( take the second finger choil and make both side of the guard look the same ) and the blade just above the where the stop bar hits into a bottle opener . Can't make myself leave home without one of my modified recon1' ! The green spear point is my favorite ! Everyone crys about it weighs to much when it doesn't and it's to big ! I came out of a store when a shop lifter got caught right in front of me ( thought it was a woman being assaulted for a second ) then there was the boy fried coming knife in his hand ! My recon1 didn't seam large enough then ! Was thinking I should have put my xl in my pocket ! Then a few more store people showed up and the turd backed off ! That seams to happen like every other time I go to the shitty (city ) !
Good to see the dogs helping with the cheese cut test Pete. My boy is very helpful with meat and cheese cutting too. Looks a pretty hardcore knife, I might pick one up with my next order if the price is OK.
I've had pocket lint jam up my knife a few times. I now clean out the pockets. I EDC the smaller mini-Recon 1 knife. The bigger version is up on my list. I want the Bush Ranger more though.
Glad your posting again . Miss the steel mystro. Seriously I understand your over it but I look forward to your videos.Honestly I just find your perspective interesting even if you were talking about shoes I'd still continue to watch man and I don't like shoes BTW.
Really wish knife makers would stop putting black coatings on blades! Scuffs up & looks terrible on first few uses. Great review! Thank you AND the cat!
This is a DLC coating which is much more resilient and wears away more gracefully than the cheaper coatings. The stuff Cold Steel used on this same model of knife a few years ago is not the same. You still may not like any coating which is fine, but just so you know they are not all created equal.
The coating Cold Steel uses isn't like that at all. I've used my Recon 1 for years and it hasn't lost any of its coating. I even polished it with flitz.
It needs the Nutnfancy pocket clip mod. I had the clip point in the past and just ordered the drop point. Basically you JB Weld the area under the clip and sand it smooth, touch of paint and your good to go. Goes in and out of the pocket much much better but still retains well. It is more about the rough g-10 grabbing the pants than the clip not sliding over. My only complaint with the knife was the depth. width of handle scales and length were fine, but it is just so wide from the back of the blade to the back of the handle when closed.
I took a Dremel with a sanding wheel on it, and just hit under the clip. You can’t notice it unless the clip is off, but it goes in and out much better.
I LOVE my CS knives. I carried a Recon 1 everyday for years and never ounce said " I wish I had a different knife", it's a good knife for everything , imo .
Greetings from the future Pete. I just ordered one of these on Prime Day for $86 US. Pretty sure I could baton it through a small log. I kind of want to see what the DLC is like on it.
The paint on the clips wears too quickly and one has to bend the clip to get it to fit over a belt. I wish they'd just make the damn things out of stainless and not paint them. They also tend to be too small. I love the knives and loved the CTS-XHP, and now they're downgrading the bloody steel, albeit to another decent steel. Still. I'm glad I got three of the XL tantos last Christmas during the CS sale. Also got the Talwar and the Frenzy. I'm not a steel snob, and my EDC blade is still AUS8A, but I love Cold Steel's other knives. They're always well designed and they cut well and retain an edge, even the AUS8A knives. And they're very easy to sharpen.
“Definitely made for people in the military” it’s called the recon 1 lol. US marine corp force recon are the last people you want to see in the distance.
I've had 3 recons and always replace them when lost. I always adjust the clip. It's better that it come too tight with room for adjustment. I'll also ajust the lock spring tension and make sure all machining marks are smoothed out where they affect opening. Once set up, it works beautifully. I spent years working as a meat cutter and all of my recons held an edge better than my professional work knives. Does anyone know by measuring whether the S35VN blade is thinner than previous versions?
The recon 1 may be my favorite edc folding knife. I only own one in Aus8 with that crappy old coating that wears off in a slight breeze. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I want the drop point, satin finished, s35vn Recon 1 exclusive from blades Canada but I also want a Recon 1 in CTS XHP while I still have a chance... Both could sell out soon. What should I do?
The pocket clip is my only complaint. I wear EMT pants that have reinforced areas for pocket knives and the clip will not glide over it. Great knife overall though.
I use it as my tactical self defense knife. In Canada we're experiencing a crime wave and they let all the criminals out of jail. So now it's upto the individual to provide for one's own security. I also carry pepper spray, and pray i never have to use either of them, and of course do everything possible to minimize the risk but I will not be made a victim of violent random crime.
I edc the Lynn Thompson voyager xl serrated edition, and for me, the Recon 1 is just too small of a blade 4inches. Actually, 4 inches is as small as I would edc. the Recon 1 is an awesome knife in my opinion ...but to each is own.your video made me shake my head.
I just add a piece of duct tape where the clip touches the G10. Sure, it's the more ghetto option. But, I do this with a lot of my knives. It doesn't look as bad as you're imagining, trust me.
Just purely out of curiosity I was wondering if you could drop about 25 USD on one of the eafengrow "D2" blades as a comparison point to the known D2 steels. I have yet to hear of anyone pitting the Chinese D2 steels against the confirmed D2 steels.
For me the recon 1 series is a perfect EDC. If you're going to carry a knife, it should be capable of anything and everything you would need a knife for! This is not an Espada we're talking about here. I like it but, everyone has their own individual taste. I respect that too...
Can u please test the Cold Steel SRK in 3V? I’ve been wanting to pull the trigger on it for a while but I’m reading lots of conflicting reports on cold steels 3V and also that they have went to a hollow grind for the 3V model as well. Thanks.
Threeper79 pull the trigger!! I've had my srk 3v for a while now and its great, and whether it's a hollow or saber grind is a matter of opinion honestly it's so close that its hard to tell, but its 3v!!!! It won't break on you.
Great knife the knife community tends to reject . I like it . It's not a stridor or a crk but it is 400 dollars less and great in a "hostile envirinment ."
The Warriors and Wonders exclusive Recon is great with a nice satin finished blade and hardware. Plus it's approved by the Half-life marines. Go, recon! Let's go!
It's only a 4-inch blade, but how does it compare with the Broken Skull? The Broken Skull is cheaper, it has the CTS-XHP steel and it also has a 4-inch blade. Wouldn't it be a better deal all things considered? I'm not a huge fan of the Broken Skull, but it's not a bad knife. I like the XHP steel, but frankly, out of the box they're not that sharp. The older AUS8A blades always came viciously sharp out of the box. Never tried the BD1.
Yeah this is a big knife. I have the spear point, and I thought it would be like the code 4, just a 1/2 inch longer. It’s like the code 4’s dad. Lol. Thanks for the video Pete. Take care brother
recon 1 out of the box is 80% knife and you need to put in 20% more it became 100%, it just need some mods, the recon 1 is my favor edc you definitely would think so if you have my mods recon 1 hehe, believe it or not it the toughest at it size and weight class personally test two of them trashed lol and still hold up, unlike my garbage Lionsteel SR1 sound solid with all the bull shit feature that fail when i tested not even hard use..
Ive carried the Recon 1 for years and Ive put it through everything you can imagine. It has held up to it all. I love this knife.

Heck, it's 2020 right now that I'm watching and S35VN is still premium stuff! 😂

You killed that poor cat’s heart breaking down all of those boxes
I love this knife so much I have 19 of them. Needless to say it's my all time favorite EDC. I can't say enough good things about it.
I've owned this knife for years and it has been a constant companion performing many different task. For a folder, this knife is tough as nails!
Subscribed just for the final fantasy 9 music on the intro. Good review also lol

I can’t believe they got rid of the hollow grind. That was the best thing this knife had going for it imo. Good video
Code 4 for EDC. Got one in my pocket now. Recon 1 for outdoor adventures.
The knife that got me hooked! Love the recon 1

'Its proper rough.'
I still love your cat. Great video as always.
Dang. Great review. First one I've watched.
Best helper cat on the internet!
Yess Friday's with Basil is back!! On Wednesday ...
“Definitely made for people in the military” it’s called the recon 1 lol. US marine corp force recon are the last people you want to see in the distance.
Almost put me in the mind of the Smith and Wesson Borderguard knives
Best FOLDER of all time .
It's a good EDC and Car Knife , and if it's too big for some folks they have a smaller version.
Use the force
And demand more Basil
The cts xhp
Yeah the clip was a pain but I just took it of and bent it up in a vice, now it's perfect
Spear point is nice too.
The pocket clip is my only complaint. I wear EMT pants that have reinforced areas for pocket knives and the clip will not glide over it. Great knife overall though.
Yes what's wrong with s35vn?
Love your videos man
Don't you think that finger guard is a bit too wide, forcing your hand/index finger to sit too far from the blade?
How do I get in touch with you to buy your used knives? I want this & I also want your TRC Apocalypse too!
Just sand the g10 a bit. The clip sucks but the knife is a beast.
Would you consider reviewing the Recon 1 Mini range? Are they good? Worthy of the Recon 1 brand? Great review mate.
Actually, 4 inches is as small as I would edc. the Recon 1 is an awesome knife in my opinion ...but to each is own.your video made me shake my head.
first tape off area around clip.
second remove clip.
third hit with with a high grit sand paper.
fourth reinstall clip and be happy.
I just add a piece of duct tape where the clip touches the G10. Sure, it's the more ghetto option. But, I do this with a lot of my knives. It doesn't look as bad as you're imagining, trust me.
Fifth, cold steel is a huge company and it should already come sanded under the clip.
Anthony Burke yur gonna do it or pay someone to do it
Just purely out of curiosity I was wondering if you could drop about 25 USD on one of the eafengrow "D2" blades as a comparison point to the known D2 steels. I have yet to hear of anyone pitting the Chinese D2 steels against the confirmed D2 steels.
Just got mine in the mail. The release is awfully stiff for us weaklings. Takes a thumb-and-a-half. Any way to lighten it?
What the hell?! I ordered mines in the tanto version but it had a chiseled grind.
I have that same lawman and I love it
For me the recon 1 series is a perfect EDC. If you're going to carry a knife, it should be capable of anything and everything you would need a knife for! This is not an Espada we're talking about here. I like it but, everyone has their own individual taste. I respect that too...
Great review , I agree with everything you said about that knife its a good knife but not for my use.
Is that ff9 music in the intro? Nice
5 year old video, what’s the update!??
Thanks.
the clips paint on all my cold steels chip out in days as i like my knives totally in pocket
looks bad
Great knife the knife community tends to reject . I like it . It's not a stridor or a crk but it is 400 dollars less and great in a "hostile envirinment ."
Just ordered one
IS THE COLD STEEL CLIP POINT S35VN SABRE GRIND OR HOLLOW GRIND ?
a knife that big does need a big clip to hold it in place.
The Warriors and Wonders exclusive Recon is great with a nice satin finished blade and hardware. Plus it's approved by the Half-life marines. Go, recon! Let's go!
Chris Allison I was drooling over that one :(
It's only a 4-inch blade, but how does it compare with the Broken Skull? The Broken Skull is cheaper, it has the CTS-XHP steel and it also has a 4-inch blade. Wouldn't it be a better deal all things considered? I'm not a huge fan of the Broken Skull, but it's not a bad knife. I like the XHP steel, but frankly, out of the box they're not that sharp. The older AUS8A blades always came viciously sharp out of the box. Never tried the BD1.
Still. Had the broken skull...seemed like a toy...blade was very thin..rolled the edge cutting a few zip ties...got rid of it
Great review thanks
Yeah this is a big knife. I have the spear point, and I thought it would be like the code 4, just a 1/2 inch longer. It’s like the code 4’s dad. Lol. Thanks for the video Pete. Take care brother
That's a beautiful and tolerant kitty. Meow.
recon 1 out of the box is 80% knife and you need to put in 20% more it became 100%, it just need some mods, the recon 1 is my favor edc you definitely would think so if you have my mods recon 1 hehe, believe it or not it the toughest at it size and weight class personally test two of them trashed lol and still hold up, unlike my garbage Lionsteel SR1 sound solid with all the bull shit feature that fail when i tested not even hard use..
what mods do you perform? @EpicWins
I can get a S35VN for 80 dlls or a XHP for 200 dlls... is it really worth the XHP???
Great video bud!
