I started playing D&D when I was 8 years old, my mom got me the books in 1979. Still would love to play but no friends..LOL

I know there's tons of people playing online if you want to join a group.

Since you seemed to doubt, I can confirm the designers of 4e specifically and clearly stated they were mimicking MMOs so they could draw in players from those games. If you look at other online discussions, you should be able to find specific names and dates for those statements, if you're so inclined.

My skepticism comes from my inability to ever find any of the core designers making that claim. There is plenty of online discussion that claims a connection to WoW and MMO’s generally but that’s a different beast. The similarities, as far as I can tell are the obvious ones (it’s a fantasy game); and, the inclusion of powers- which mean all characters have something cool they can do on there turn. People bring up other similarities, but I’m still skeptical.
The closest I’ve come to finding a designer that makes that claim is Mike Mearls, who admits he did not do any of the initial work on 4th, saying that he thinks there was inspiration from MMO’s. I could of course be wrong, but I think the games would have been much more similar if they were just trying to lure those fans in.

I do hear a lot of Colville's voice in this video. Still a good video. Keep going

Yeah I’m definitely very inspired by his channel, I hope my own voice still comes through though.
At 15:50 is one of those things where I’ve just literally never encountered anything that was not both pulp fantasy and dungeon crawling so I just mixed them up in my brain, sorry about any confusion.

I don't really have a problem with what you said, rather how you said it. Thus let me offer a small bit of constructive criticism: it was really obvious where the line breaks were in your document. Try to rerecord those and splice them together. It'll flow much nicer and feel less like you're reading off a script even though you are. Just practice.
Also: the order was weird how you talked about One D&D first, and then the older editions. I thought the format would be 'history -> present -> future '.

Its pretty hard for me to be objective about the video, I spent however long (idk at least 10 hours) doing research, writing, recording and editing it. However I do appreciate the feedback. And I get your second point. I just didn’t want to make a video ostensibly about One D&D in which I didn’t talk about it for the first 15 minutes.

I really got into D&D around the start of Fourth Edition. I know 4E was controversial. But there were some things I really appreciated about it. Every character always had cool stuff to do. Melee classes were never just relegated to hitting things with a sword. They had moves and tactics and combos. And MONSTERS. Man, 4E monsters were so cool. Each one had unique abilities that made it a different beast to fight. Each monster was kind of a 'combat puzzle' for the player to solve. Coming from that, 5E was a little bit of a letdown for me, personally.
I will say, however, that 4E could get very complex and combat encounters could take a long time. So I think in that regard, 5E moves in the right direction. And that's probably one of the reasons it has been very successful. The less math the players (let alone the DM) have to do at the table, the better!
I doubt we have seen the end of new editions of D&D. There is not going to be a perfect edition that does everything for everyone. The game will always be evolving.

Yeah 4th Edition definitely seems to me to be the most interesting edition- because it’s so different and controversial. It makes me very interested to think what might have been if the VTT had actually worked out.
And even more interested to see how One D&D works out with its VTT.

Thank you sooo much. There are so many people talking about AD&D and nobody mentions the sexist character creation there!
    Subbed for this alone.

I find that stuff hard to ignore. It might be because the modern copyright holders- Wizards of the Coast, are perfectly happy for that stuff to be forgotten.

1e magic users took a great deal of effort to become great. I'd rather play a fighter, instead of having to roll up another character 2 hours into a session. 1e bard was a prestigious class. 5e dropped melee weapon range, operational space, damage die difference based on size of target, "to hit" modifier against armor type, speed factor, calculation of ranged weapons difference indoors/outdoors. 5e is not d&d not even close.

    • @AndrewStobb
      @AndrewStobb  ปีที่แล้ว +2

I mean it's obvious there have been some big changes. I think most of that stuff was dropped by 3rd Edition. I did consider putting including that massive weapon chart from AD&D in the video, but decided against it. I totally respect your opinion, but 5e is the only edition I've ever played, so "5e is not d&d", feels very strange to me.

@@AndrewStobb it's true. 5E is D&D like backgammon is chess. It's a totally different RPG. Arduin, Labrynth Lord Basic Fantasy & many others are much more like D&D than 5E is. WotC slaps the D&D name on it because they own the brand & it's a valuable brand.

Saying that the most successful and best designed version of D&D is "not D&D" is beyond stupid. You grognards are holding back the hobby. Go back into your dark basements and leave the civilized people alone.
