My Mother met Barbara Stanwyck at the glove counter at I Magnin's in San Francisco back in the seventies. They both had a pleasant conversation about how hard it is to find elbow length gloves. Miss Stanwyck left the store first. The shop assistant then informed my Mother the gloves she had been admiring were a gift from Miss Stanwyck.
Barbara stayed humble unlike a lot of people. Actors usually put on character but she became the character. She put her heart into it. She was strong but soft! Indeed a survivalist. One of the best Hollywood actresses ever! ❤

Her performance in the Thorn Birds - that last scene at her birthday party with Richard Chamberlain - remains the most incredible bit of acting I've ever seen. Bar none. Very few people can make the viewer feel the emotions they are portraying on screen. She had that rare quality of an actor who can do deep emotion and hilarious comedy to equal effect. To this day "Christmas in Connecticut" is one of the funniest movies and a staple around the holidays. RIP Barbara! You are incomparable!

After my mother graduated from Boston's Children's Hospital School of Nursing in 1951 , she accepted a position at the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. It was Barbara Stanwyck with no press, no posse, and driving herself. She spent the entire afternoon playing and reading with the children, before leaving just as unobtrusively as she had come. My mother only stayed there about six months before she returned to New England, but in that time she said Miss Stanwyck did the same thing several times. After that as far as she was concerned, Barbara Stanwyck could do no wrong and became her favorite actress.
In an odd coincidence, when my mother was in high school, her father accepted a position in Phoenix Arizona. World War II was on , and my mother's after school job was working at a Dairy Bar at Sky Harbor Airfield, where a lot of young Pilots were trained. After she finished her shift and was walking across the tarmac, she said a handsome lieutenant came up to her and asked for directions. As she was going that way, and as she later told me, he was drop dead gorgeous oh, she offered to show him the way. She said he was very polite and they had a lovely conversation, but it wasn't until he said goodbye and they parted company , that she realized she had been walking with Lieutenant Robert Taylor.
Barbara Stanwyck dazzled me when I was a kid and saw "Ball of Fire" on my black and white television. Had never heard of the film and honestly didn't even recognize her at first, but her entrance into the professors' home and toying with them was truly brilliant acting.

Even when she made one of her last public appearances on an awards show and two people had to hold her up, she was beautiful, and full of grace and class! Babs, you are missed! Love you pretty lady! What an actress and a what a life story. And that amazingly thin body frame of hers never altered, even in her later years. I continue to collect her work on DVD because her real life speaks through so many of her characters. As was the case for so many of those Golden Era actors.

Barbara Stanwyck was my favorite as well. My parents watched a lot of classic films when I was growing up and no other actress held my attention the way she did. I mimicked the way she walked and stood when I was figuring out who I was because I thought it just exuded strength.
I love this woman.... I still watch a lot of old movies starring Ms. Stanwyck. Movies aren't made with true compassion and real story lines like in the good ole days. Westerns aren't westerns and drama is corny. I will always be a fan.
Does anyone remember Barbara stanwyck and Fred MacMurray in a movie about his being a district attorney and she is a petty thief. The story revolves around the fact that she has to be in carcerated during Christmas season. McMurray eventually takes her home for Christmas with him. The rest of the movie is her coming to realization that she is missing out on life due to her current self-made circumstances. She sees the goodness in those around her without being under conditional love. She let's herself be taken up in this small part of life that is real, pure and forgiving. She finds herself wanting that for her life. You can see in her acting that she has actually repented about her past behaviour and does her best to prove and live up to her new "set of standards " she has promised herself . Like the prodigal daughter if you will. At the end she finds love and accepts responsibility for her previous unlawful actions and vows to correct them. Knowing she could very well be losing the treasure she has recently found in the most unlikely place. This movie would have been a bust without her talent and dedication to the character she created. An amazing lady.
She was the best! i love watching her act! She never ask for pity and gave all she got! A terrific actress who is still giving pleasure and joy 30 years after her death. She didn't need to be Davis or Crawford. She was Stanwyck and that says a lot! You go girl!!!
At 71, I have been captivated by Barbara for many years. Never disappointed, she was the character with style, grace, charm and, of course, beauty. I still search the net hoping to find yet, one more of her movies.
the more i watch her movies the more i become fascinated with her and its hard to pin down whether its her unique voice, sparkling eyes, or ability to play a cold hearted killer, seductive sassy girl, or a loving mother
Great tribute because it clearly depicted Miss Stanwyck for her unique qualities. Her immersion into character is undeniable. One complaint is that her light-hearted roles were not much discussed. Miss Stanwyck approached comedy with the same intensity of portraying a human being. Her flair gives us humor because it is real--we are insecure and do ridiculous things hoping life will turn out for the best.
One of the few actresses at the time to not be apart of the studio system and be a free agent. It takes guts, talent, and confidence in one self to take a bold stance like that!

I raced home every day from school just to watch reruns of the big valley! And then I discovered Stella Dallas and have been hooked on Barbara Stanwyck ever since!!
Saw it on the Late Show when I was 8 years old, and my poor little heart broke : Stella Dallas, in the rain, being told by the cop to move it along as she's watching her daughter ... love her over all the others, even more than Ginger Rogers.
That scene in Stella Dallas was amazing. She didn't say a word. Yet she said everything. Now to convey her feelings without saying a word is acting at it's best.
Everytime I see Stella Dallas, I cry at the end. She was fabulous in Double Indemnity. Loved her in Ball of Fire! A real talent, a great star, but if her real last name was "Stevens," I'm Elvis reincarnated.
The first Stanwyck movie I ever saw was "Annie Oakley." I loved it. The second one was "Stella Dallas." I was a teenager then, and was happy that I had watched it alone because I cried like a baby at the last scene. Boys don't like to cry, but I do every time I see it. RIP.

Miss Stanwyck was a great favorite of mine. Her acting range was huge and she was never typecast. It wasn't one of her best known roles but I loved her in "Ball of Fire"(1941) with Gary Cooper.
In my view, Barbara Stanwyck was miscast in that role. She wasn't believable in the cheap blonde wig. Fred MacMurray and Edward G. Robinson carried the movie.

Barbara gives a wonderful performance in "Double Indemnity", the look she gives whilst Walter Neff is doing the dasterdly deed is quite amazing,the whole scene is totally dependant on that expressive close-up. Long may her body of work be shown for film fans to fully appreciate her great talent.

What memories of her I have and I’m now 74. Big Valley was my favorite also Double Indemnity and others. Simply she was incredible. What a wonderful woman.

What an actress and a what a life story. And that amazingly thin body frame of hers never altered, even in her later years. I continue to collect her work on DVD because her real life speaks through so many of her characters. As was the case for so many of those Golden Era actors.

I've always been a huge fan of Barbara Stanwyck, so that I had no idea that she wasn't up there with all the other icons of Hollywood. She will always be one of my all time favorites.
I think Barbara Stanwyck looks better in The Big Valley and she did when she was a younger actress what year did she die and how old is she I love the clothes she wears on The Big Valley the way she wears her hair she's a very elegant woman
Barbara Stanwyck was my favorite as well. My parents watched a lot of classic films when I was growing up and no other actress held my attention the way she did. I mimicked the way she walked and stood when I was figuring out who I was because I thought it just exuded strength.
I love this woman.... I still watch a lot of old movies starring Ms. Stanwyck. Movies aren't made with true compassion and real story lines like in the good ole days. Westerns aren't westerns and drama is corny. I will always be a fan.
Does anyone remember Barbara stanwyck and Fred MacMurray in a movie about his being a district attorney and she is a petty thief. The story revolves around the fact that she has to be in carcerated during Christmas season. McMurray eventually takes her home for Christmas with him. The rest of the movie is her coming to realization that she is missing out on life due to her current self-made circumstances. She sees the goodness in those around her without being under conditional love. She let's herself be taken up in this small part of life that is real, pure and forgiving. She finds herself wanting that for her life. You can see in her acting that she has actually repented about her past behaviour and does her best to prove and live up to her new "set of standards " she has promised herself . Like the prodigal daughter if you will. At the end she finds love and accepts responsibility for her previous unlawful actions and vows to correct them. Knowing she could very well be losing the treasure she has recently found in the most unlikely place. This movie would have been a bust without her talent and dedication to the character she created. An amazing lady.

At 71, I have been captivated by Barbara for many years. Never disappointed, she was the character with style, grace, charm and, of course, beauty. I still search the net hoping to find yet, one more of her movies.

Great tribute because it clearly depicted Miss Stanwyck for her unique qualities.
Her immersion into character is undeniable.
One complaint is that her light-hearted roles were not much discussed. Miss Stanwyck approached comedy with the same intensity of portraying a human being. Her flair gives us humor because it is real--we are insecure and do ridiculous things hoping life will turn out for the best.
They didn’t mention one of my favorite Movies she starred in and that was Christmas in Connecticut! I watch that movie all the time!

One of the few actresses at the time to not be apart of the studio system and be a free agent. It takes guts, talent, and confidence in one self to take a bold stance like that!
So glad I watched this. I had never been a huge fan of hers, but after watching this and what a generous, kind hard working woman she was I have a new appreciation for her!

Last night, I stayed up late to watch "California." Something made me look her up, this Sunday morning...OMG, What a lady, what a human being...
A fabulous human being, as well as actress! This quote was said about another actress :- “Marilyn played the best game with the worst hand of anybody I know.” ~Edward Wagenknecht, author....I feel this can definitely be said of Barbara Stanwyck as well. No wonder she was kind & thoughtful towards Marilyn, when they were in a movie together...Barbara sensed the similarities between them. A fine life, well lived :)
I raced home every day from school just to watch reruns of the big valley! And then I discovered Stella Dallas and have been hooked on Barbara Stanwyck ever since!!

Saw it on the Late Show when I was 8 years old, and my poor little heart broke : Stella Dallas, in the rain, being told by the cop to move it along as she's watching her daughter ... love her over all the others, even more than Ginger Rogers.
That scene in Stella Dallas was amazing. She didn't say a word. Yet she said everything. Now to convey her feelings without saying a word is acting at it's best.
Everytime I see Stella Dallas, I cry at the end. She was fabulous in Double Indemnity. Loved her in Ball of Fire! A real talent, a great star, but if her real last name was "Stevens," I'm Elvis reincarnated.
The first Stanwyck movie I ever saw was "Annie Oakley." I loved it. The second one was "Stella Dallas." I was a teenager then, and was happy that I had watched it alone because I cried like a baby at the last scene. Boys don't like to cry, but I do every time I see it. RIP.
Stella Dallas was one of my favorites and you are right the last scene with her daughter getting married was a tear jerker.

I can't even remember a time when I cried so much. Well, maybe when I was a kid and watched Walt Disney's "Old Yeller," when the boy had to put down his beloved dog. I didn't think I could feel so bad watching a movie.
My favorite actress, although I didn’t appreciate her since I’ve gotten older and have watched more of her movies! She had a depth inside that came out, not like the beautiful actresses that used vanity , she was real and it came out in a way I haven’t seen in any other actress. Such a sad life, but she was a survivor.
I was so fortunately Too have live With my Great Aunt. God rest her soul. When I watch my favorite Actress black-and-white movies I see my great Aunt in them.. I remember some of her beautiful clothes Fox tails hats with big Rose's on them her suits. She was a beautiful classic woman. I don't understand why Hollywood keep all these beautiful classic in legend movies locked up and just getting dust on Them..

A great actress. And she was a really adorable child.What a rough childhood she had-not surprised that she also worked so well with Marilyn Monroe on Clash by Night. Both had experienced difficult childhoods.

I think she was better than Crawford. Remember Big Valley? Crawford was never big on TV.
I've often thought Joan should have been in Sorry, Wrong Number and Barbara in Mildred Pierce.

Miss Stanwyck was a great favorite of mine. Her acting range was huge and she was never typecast. It wasn't one of her best known roles but I loved her in "Ball of Fire"(1941) with Gary Cooper.

In my view, Barbara Stanwyck was miscast in that role. She wasn't believable in the cheap blonde wig.
Fred MacMurray and Edward G. Robinson carried the movie.
Great respect for Barbara Stanwick.
She also did a movie with Elvis Presley called “Roustabout” Elvis was ecstatic to be working with her.
I think what Ricardo Montalbon said about Barbara Stanwyck was the most accurate; she did what she wanted to do,and played parts she wanted,even tho,they did not bring fame,recognition of other actors more aligned with the major movie companies.
