This episode is a reference to the movie/anime(?) Astro Boy Also, Flashback Gyro looks more like how he did back in the original series with the messier hair
.... you do realize the movie that came out some years back is based on the manga from the 50's right? you know~ the manga that got made into the anime that people know about.
Having an episode homaging Astro Boy makes a lot of sense given the fact that Osamu Tezuka (the creator of Astro Boy and pretty much the creator of manga as a medium) was inspired by Disney, particularly the comics by Carl Barks (who created Scrooge).
I thought this episode was really cute, and I like that Huey and Boyd get along so well; Huey really needed a friend he could relate to, and I think Boyd was perfect for that. And I love the Japan/Anime references in this episode, too, including how Boyd is basically Astro Boy! Also: The evil doctor was an Akita, a Japanese dog breed.
One thing I would have liked to see is Gyro pulling out the notepad he had in his debut episode with the list of all his inventions that went evil, flip through (several) pages to the very beginning, cross out 2BO in the evil column, and write Boyd in the good column, right under Gizmo Duck. I feel like that would have been a great callback.
@@sabrinamiller3671 we only see the most recent page on his notebook. Considering he has been a scientist for years there are probably many pages we haven't seen.a
Honestly when I found out that this episode was mostly a homage to Astro Boy, I just felt all warm and fuzzy inside as I genuinely love that franchise and I loved that my favorite reboot managed to make a reference to both the classic anime and the infamous hug scene from the 2003 series.
This is legit one of my favorite episodes of the show, and the one that got me doing regular videos on new episodes- I just adore how this thing is structured. The episode asks what the line is between a machine and a person, and EVERY character in the story holds a different point of view which informs each other and affirms Boyd’s journey to cement his personhood. Whether it’s as a friend and equal (Huey), or a tool for good (Fenton), or a tool for evil (Tezuka and Akita), or a symbol of past failure/surrogate child (Gyro), everyone approaches Boyd differently and his want to assert that he’s just a *person* plays as real, genuine drama. I love it when a story feels like a conversation, about an idea or a theme, where the central character arc is the thesis statement made in response to different suggested conclusions. Just wonderfully constructed.
Also, to add some things here: this episode is some backstory for Gyro, yeah- perhaps especially targeted towards those who complained about his new personality in the reboot as opposed to DT87 Gyro. (I personally love and appreciate all Gyros). They didn't really have much planned for Boyd, but t makes sense for him to be built by Gyro as opposed to Beaks :p. Astro Boy references and a little bit of Iron Giant + ANIME galore! Shorter intros = Longer episode runtime. Love your reactions!
The evil doctor in this episode is a Akita dog breed. He’s also voiced by the same actor that voiced Shang Sung in the first Mortal Kombat movie. Also so many anime references in this episode.
I'm not gonna lie, this is one of the best episodes is the series, and i'm not the only who thinks that, I remember when everyone talking about it, is just... funny, sweet, and interesting, ir like it a lot 💖
That ep is awesome for all the cool easter eggs, like Lupin III, the Sailor Moon cosplayer, the obvious Astro Boy references, etc. In general "Duck Tales" loves to throw references and quotes. and it's fun to notice a bunch of them.
why is it was when I first watched this episode I felt like it was in ambage to every Japanese manga or anime that I have read or watched throughout my entire life span and I am full on here for it.
Soooooo much anime references:Sailor Moon, Lupin the Third, Astro Boy, etc! Also, out of all the species to create BOYD, I wonder why they chose an African Gray Parrot like Mark Beaks?
I'm not sure if anyone else noticed, but there's at least a couple shots where a anthro version of Lupin the Third in his green jacket can be seen in the background. :P
One of the reasons why I love this episode is because we get to see Gyros past as an intern and how B.O.Y.D aka 2BO was made, and turned evil because of doctor Akita. Because it explains why Gyro is so obsessed with trying to prevent his inventions from turning evil. He did not want what happened to 2BO to happen again, and I think that is part of the reason why he is being so hard with Fenton because he sees a lot of himself in him. I also think what happened to 2BO is the reason why Gyro is being a bit cranky in general, because he clearly loved 2BO and seeing him turn evil and losing him clearly broke Gyros heart.
Huey: A real boy who acts like a robot
B.O.Y.D.: A robot who acts like a real boy
A match made in heaven!
BOYD is a good boy.

@@thegreendragon5390 definitely
Fun fact, Gyro in the past is similar to how he looked in the original Ducktales
That last shot was very neccessary because 2BO is Toby, Astro-Boyd, is Astro-Boy. That''s how the classic anime's episodes would end.
And his name being 2BO works well because the name "Toby" was, from what I read, "Tobio" in the Japanese.
It's Zamber, a DEFINITELY real reactor.
What do you mean "DEFINITELY"?
She put it in all-caps to represent how exaggerated B.O.Y.D. (and everyone else) says the word "definitely" in the line "definitely real boy."
Huey and Boyd just having wholesome moments! I absolutely adore it
I love that younger Gyro is original Gyro! The call backs in this show are the best and I love it and will miss it!
The doctor was a breed of dog called Akita
And voiced by the actor who played Shang Tsung in the 90's Mortal Kombat movie.

2003 series? I just remember the early 2000's animated film with a great hug scene.
Yea, it happens near the end of the 2003 series. It's on Hulu if you want to watch it. I think it's on Netflix but I'm not sure
@@nathanielhamato641 Oh, I didn't realize that that was from 2003. I thought it was from the 90's or something. Lol
