Listening to you turning is so relaxing. Your almost hypnotic. Very much more enjoyable than others who yell, dance, and throw all kinds of shenanigans into their videos.
I think it still turned out great! I know what you mean about comments when you cover up grain. I get it when the grain speaks for itself, but sometimes, it needs a little help. You keep doing you Peggy and we will all keep enjoying it! Have a blessed day! - Ed
Love the finishing cheat for the bowl. I'm a fan of wood grain, but I love the simplicity of how you disguised the crack and find myself enjoying the contrast as well. Beautiful piece.
Good save on the bowl . Turned out beautiful and its always fun and educational watching your videos. Hopefully one day I will make a go at it. I never get tired of seeing what is created.
Well Peggy, I think most wood turners have had this issue where the piece just decides to come apart mid turning! On one that I had that did similar to your with a diagonal crack I sanded the crack flat on both sides then glued in a sandwich of contrasting woods as a highlight. It actually turned out quite well and looks like that was the intention all along! BTW, to sand it I had bought an extra faceplate and made a double thick MDF round mounted on the faceplate that will fit the largest PSA sanding disc I could fit on my lathe! It works wonderful! Super handy for sanding straight long items too! BTW, great recovery on your project. I like the Plastic Wrap technique you used for the finish! Great idea!
Nice save Peggy, I like it! Most of us would have made firewood out of it but when you pay good money for something you hate to waste it and you possibly will be able to sell it! Thanks for the great video! Cheers Al
abilities should not be measured by random chance disasters but by how well you can recover from them. the end result of your disaster, looks good. you have done well with recovering!!!
I am glad you finished it..Looks very pretty. It’s sad it cracked, but it’s the nature of wood so this happens sometimes.I loved the size and the shape of it too 🥰
I don't know how I've never seen the cling wrap trick before, but that's a very unique way of covering the crack! Always fun watching your videos, thanks for the entertainment! Very nice for a piece of maple. Stay warm, winters nearly here!
Since the break was so obvious and difficult (impossible) to conceal I would have celebrated it by inlaying several butterfly patches. Still, thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay healthy.
I love the “Save” you did and the colors !!! Technically great .. and always a pleasure watching a calm person working out a problem. Thank You so much.
Hi Peggy Nice save and it came out great. I would like to offer a tip of how I try and fix a complete crack. The first thing I do is put the two together dry and see how they fit. Some time little splinters will lay cross grain preventing the to from mating as exactly as they can. I pick off those that are obvious and keep dry fitting until I can mate it as good as possible. I avoid CA and go with Titebond II. I like CA for cracks that are running through the wood but not when it is in two pieces. I work on a flat table in you case the rim of the bowl is flat and laying it on a flat table works like a third hand. Put enough glue on to cover the surface of the crack and being the two together on the table. Think ahead about how can I add a little weight or rubber bands around the bowl to help it stay until the glue sets. Patience is the key here but you can make a crack look like it is just a crack and not two parts of the same bowl. Keep up the great work.
I like Frank Howarth's attitude - the wood tells you what you're going to make, you just need to help the wood express itself. Good job helping the wood express itself!
One thing you could do with the crack, if it happens again, is flatten it out on your band saw or sander, on both parts and cut another darker different type of wood as an insert. I have seen other woodworkers do things like that.
I've used autobody filler (bondo) for fixing problems like that. Its talc in a polyester resin. Its easy to mix, cheap, and sands easy. Then paint from there.
When things go Wrong!! Like your attitude.. Deep breath and head off on plan B!! I guess a fair few would have added to the log pile but for me... Plan B looks pretty good😁 keep safe and well.👍👍
Great to see fails or should I say design opportunities. As well as the all the great successes. The result is still looking great and personally, I love the finish on the outside.
Oooooh Peggy thats a pity it broke it was looking like one very awesome bowl and I would love to have seen what it was going to be like, BUT what an incredible recovery and it still looks like an awesome bowl great great salvage 👍👍👍
Good save, glad you didn't have that piece fly off and hurt you. I may have gone a different route and made intentional looking cracks as a pattern to hide the actual crack, still came out great though.
Since I am not a winner, I will be a whinner 😊😊😊 Just imagine if that side would have separated and gone flying off into Canada -eh. Well that's different! And pretty. I forgot in my last comment you might avoid stainless screws. A lot of them are soft and will strip of break. I have great luck with deck screws .
hate when you do a load of work on a project and it breaks . god save dear congrats to the winner your going to love acks wood paste i use it to and its wonderful stuff .
Nice save Peggy! Really liked how the color came out. Curious how the finish feels like with the paint. Is it smooth or are there bumps from the pour? Does the Acks smooth things out. Thanks, safe turning.
Had a spalted maple bowl explode on me. I went to mess with it when i should have left it alone. Found all 11 pieces. Glued them back together with thickened epoxy. Re finished it. I named it “Exploded Bowl”. Sold it for $175. Just sayin’.
