Definitely. Any light dusting of snow it will need winter tyres to get up a slight incline, the cabin is cramped, if your unfortunate to not own a garage your front door windows will freeze in the winter, less boot space, the door card switches are not ergonomically designed to have your arm on the rest and use them comfortably, in the wet the golf R will take the piss out of it, no auto handbrake, no matter how you adjust the seat and steering wheel positions you just can't get a comfy distance from the steering wheel and runflats are harsh. I would rather have a vw frisby to get me home than a runflat. Apart from all the negatives the 1 series is slightly better to drive on a summer day.
@@honestreview1043 Never had an issue with mine during the two winters I owned it. Winter tyres are an option and reduce normal wear of the Michelin Pilot Super Sports. The boot space is negligible. An auto handbrake is also not a positive in many people's eyes. The seating position is nice and low and the wheel feels nice and adjustable. The car comes with excellent Michelin PSS as standard (run-flats are an option). The car is fun in the wet and grips well in the dry (mostly due to the tyres). The engine is a peach, it's RWD, and it's not a boring 4-pot. There are negatives with the M140i, but owners who have lived with car would disagree with pretty much all of your points.
Very sad to see the Golf R go, especially after all your recent mods! New car is a beast but I still prefer my 7.5 R. Look forward to your new content though, enjoy!
The Golf R doesn’t look special either; the GTI looks much nicer. The BMW has the better driving position too and it helped swing the my purchase to the 140, p,us there’s that engine. I prefer the ZF8 too.
M Performance LSD or Quaife LSD really makes this car put all of its power down, even in the most damp surfaces. Makes these M140is feel more predictable when they lose grip. You might want to look into that.
Great idea for track days and nut job street racers, for the people who just value the car and our licences, expensive mod for limited return. You want mods including LSD buy a used M2
Quite agree. Got an Mperf diff from BMW and it’s made all the difference in getting the power down in the wet. Power slides much more predictable. Also winter tyres make a big difference in the wet and cold. Nice to see you go for an M140 after the R. The R would be quicker point to point in the wet down country lanes, but you’ll have more fun in the M140. Like your colour btw. Look forward to seeing more videos on it.
@@markrhoden68 I disagree. Its not such a stupid idea as you deemed it to be. As far as the UK is concerned, the highest mileaged M2s with 60-70k miles on the clock don't come as low as £27k. For that, you can get a 69 reg M140i with under 1600 miles. Even the CAT D, CAT S, CAT N labelled M2s with the N55 engine on the used market don't go as low as £25k. As for the cheapest M140is that don't have 'CAT' labels, they can be picked up from £18k for a 18reg car with 61,000 miles and £11k for M135is. A BMW M Performance LSD can be picked up for £1995. Birds Auto will install Quaife's ATB Differential for £2016. Insurance group of the M140i is 37 whereas the M2 is 42 and the M2 Competition being 47. The B58s tend to be better on fuel than the N55s and the S55s too, so less time spent at the fuel pumps and more time driving. Its easy to achieve over 36mpg without trying. All these costs add up. I'm not trying to say that the M2 and M2 Competition are worse cars at all because once those cars are taken to the track, they have much better subframes and suspension setups (let alone superior mechanical grip) as the M140i/M240is. But for those who are on a tighter budget and don't live very close to the track BUT still want to experience RWD fun in a safe environment at the appropriate time, then its nice to have options. As I said, the predictability of having a progressive oversteering moment is always better than an unpredictable moment with an open diff.
You did almost the same as me, I went from a manual Golf R into a M240i. I loved the Golf but the B58 engine is on another level. I'm sure you will be delighted with your choice!
Forgot to mention a couple things you may not know about. The traction control has 2 settings. Holding it turns off everything while pressing it turns "traction" mode on for optimal starts. Also while traction mode is on having the gearbox in manual mode it will NOT auto shift up unlike other modes. I say this because first time I found that out it reved to 7.5k revs and I was like wtf happened there!

Good choice Luke. I tried out an A45, RS3, M2, Golf R before deciding on a M240i. B58 is a brilliant engine with driving driving modes that turn the car from a tree hugger to a total hooligan. Good choice, I dealt with my PPF by taking the resonator out of my Cupra. What a difference for £80. Also the gearbox, isn't a dct. It's a torque converter

That cold start is MUCH quieter than my 340i. I didn't know the silly filter made much difference. Good choice and the last chance to get a RWD hot hatch, golf r fans won't be happy about your choice but show them the hot hatch shoot out you did a few weeks ago :)
@@MT-kx2uc Straight 6s are more inherently balanced and smoother than 4 cylinders. Sounds like you haven't been in a car with a straight 6 to understand and appreciate that. M140i allows the driver to trail-brake and 'rotates' through corners because it has a closer optimal 50:50 weight distribution for a more balanced handling than the Golf R which has 59% front and 41% rear weight distribution. Go watch Savagegeese's review on the Golf R - it is a no-bullshit, no sugarcoated car review you see everywhere on youtube

The B58 is a beast of an engine just waiting to be unleashed and it sounds awesome with a few mods the 6 pots are so creamy smooth as well. ,i had a stage 1 golf R 2016 model and my current M240i with a stage 1 is making 426 bhp and 601 nm .makes my golf R feel very tame ,you will love learning to drive the M140 its way more of a drivers car ,the golf R gets a bit boring shall we say.mine is a 2018 pre opf filter version.
I got mine a couple of months ago valencia orange. Best decision i made and you will not regret it. On a side note there is a grille you can get that lowers insurance premium due to stones apparently not sure what its called but if you want a photo of it let me know. Great buy!!
Great choice mate. Ignore all those saying it doesn’t look special enough or it’s no good in the wet zzzzzzzz. When you drive it it definitely feels special and puts a huge smile on your face. It’s so much fun!! It’s faster than a Golf R in most circumstances, more exciting to drive, better interior (feels more premium) sounds better. Just wait til that back end starts sliding and twitching it’s an absolute ball. And when it is dry and you can get the power down, I’m sorry but you’ll leave a golf for dead. Enjoy.
I hope you enjoy the M140i. A bit of a sideways move but that's what BMW do well. Don't drive it like the Golf R or it will be in a ditch before winters out. I guess spotting cars the same as you own has become the norm in the Golf R, so you can continue that game in the M140i. However, don't be fooled by all the lookie likey 1 series M Sport diesels.
Good decision Luke :) I'm saying this as a very lucky M240i driver. I put 65.000 km on the clock - in 20 month. Every single km was pure fun ... I love the engine and the rear wheel drive. I wish you the same fun as I have :) !!!
I did the same as you and drove all the other AWD hot hatches i was certain i was going to buy a Audi RS3. After driving a M140i the competitors just felt lifeless and boring. I've had my M140i for a year now and i still would take it over any other hot hatch. I look forward to future content on it.
Nice car. Fair play. Picked the wrong time of year though to go automatic and rear wheel drive. Should have sticked with Golf R for the winter. Much easier to live with and better in bad weather for this time of year
The m140i is the best hot hatch money can buy. The A45 is much more expensive. Sure it has more fance tech and more power ... but you gotta pay for it. This pick was great. With a LSD and a Tune this car is a beast and costs much less then the RS3 and the A45. Well Done! :)

I think all these people commenting ‘should of got this, should of got that’ clearly don’t understand what a great car is all about. Last of its kind this, and is all about the drama. It’s easy and boring pelting a 4wd car around some twisty roads. This on the other hand, just makes you smile whilst shitting your pants. I had one and loved it and when it opens up it would ruin any other hot hatch. Enjoy it mate, just stick a jb4 on it and it’ll be quick enough.

Great decision! I've had loads of hot hatches over the years the m140 is my favourite second was the golf edition 30. The m140 Is so good I've had 2 of them. Most people who dislike them have never driven one because everyone who has driven mine has absolutely loved it. I really like the golf r but I think the gti looks better and although slower much prefer the character of the old r32.
Maverick 41 and you pay an exclusive price. Not everyone has 50,000 smackers to spend on a specc’d up RS3. I do Love the RS3 though, don’t get me wrong, but that’s a dream hot hatch for me! The m140 is extremely good value for money !

Take it to Litchfield. Get the akrapovic downpipe and full system. Quaife LSD and the Litchfield remap. Mines producing 455bhp on the dyno. Couldn’t recommend it more.

Ive got an S1 hoping to get golf R soon but I do like the m140i and it’s crazy you got one and I’d take one but I gotta say I’d rather a golf R. The m140I is so quick but it just looks too much like a regular 1 series for me
I prefer the look of the M2 cars but the M140 is still one hell of a car congratulations I was toying with buying a beemer but treated myself to a 7.5 Golf R and what a car I haven't stopped grinning ever since buying her. I think my 1st cosmetic upgrade could be a clubsport spoiler. Plus would love an Akropovic Exhaust. Enjoy that 6 cylinder sound.
I thought you’d go for an RS 3 for some reason. I currently own a MK 7 Golf R and I very nearly purchased an M140i instead. I love my Golf R but I’m fairly sure I’ll be swapping it out for an RS 3 next. You’ve made a good choice though and I don’t blame you at all. Hope you enjoy it.

Huge congrats. Great choice. I got mine in July from factory with adaptive dampers and an MPerformance LSD. Adaptive suspension has been replaced with Birds B1 Suspension and an underbody brave has been added. What a transformation. The car is perfect now! However there is the B12 kit which is cheaper. I also replaced the 6.5 inch screen with an 8.8 inch screen bought on eBay for £200.
It’s funny that people give up the engagement of a manual for an automatic that is < 1s faster to 100km/h, or the safety/capability of AWD for RWD, or a lovely adjustable exhaust note for a terrible droning too loud mess. Reading too much into the specs I suppose. Perhaps I’m too practical, but then again this is a TH-cam car and I suppose change is good! I hope he doesn’t get into any trouble with the RWD... not really an option here with the snow!

Still have my a1 after 5 years straight turbo back exhaust with extreme pop and bang map. 1.4 with 161hp and 230lb. Thinking of getting a 1.5 Seat Leon fr dsg black edition but I'm so attached to my a1 and all the work that's been done but alot (£7500) has went into repairs alone 😒. But I can't mod the lean as I want own it.

I had a tdi tuning box on . Had no other mods put It on a dyno it hit 410bhp 565 nm . Get one you won't be disappointed pal

Swapped my megane rs 275 for an m140i. Best decision I've ever made.... Such a good car
I got mine a couple of months ago valencia orange. Best decision i made and you will not regret it. On a side note there is a grille you can get that lowers insurance premium due to stones apparently not sure what its called but if you want a photo of it let me know. Great buy!!
Great choice mate. Ignore all those saying it doesn’t look special enough or it’s no good in the wet zzzzzzzz. When you drive it it definitely feels special and puts a huge smile on your face. It’s so much fun!! It’s faster than a Golf R in most circumstances, more exciting to drive, better interior (feels more premium) sounds better. Just wait til that back end starts sliding and twitching it’s an absolute ball. And when it is dry and you can get the power down, I’m sorry but you’ll leave a golf for dead. Enjoy.
For the 70% of time the UK roads are wet, the Golf would be faster.

I hope you enjoy the M140i. A bit of a sideways move but that's what BMW do well. Don't drive it like the Golf R or it will be in a ditch before winters out.
I guess spotting cars the same as you own has become the norm in the Golf R, so you can continue that game in the M140i. However, don't be fooled by all the lookie likey 1 series M Sport diesels.
Good decision Luke :) I'm saying this as a very lucky M240i driver. I put 65.000 km on the clock - in 20 month. Every single km was pure fun ... I love the engine and the rear wheel drive. I wish you the same fun as I have :) !!!

I did the same as you and drove all the other AWD hot hatches i was certain i was going to buy a Audi RS3. After driving a M140i the competitors just felt lifeless and boring. I've had my M140i for a year now and i still would take it over any other hot hatch. I look forward to future content on it.

Nice car. Fair play. Picked the wrong time of year though to go automatic and rear wheel drive. Should have sticked with Golf R for the winter. Much easier to live with and better in bad weather for this time of year
By far the best choice or M240i. Best hot hatch out there and I don’t care about the Audi’s. If you drive one of these, you won’t go back

Good luck with it, change is good but I preferred your R, if you were set on moving to bmw then m2 is the car. More expensive but it will hold its value.

great purchase :) as I said in your Insta post, I ALMOST bought the M140i, but had issues getting in and out of it....... so I bought the Golf R instead (on your recommendation LOL) and saved almost $20,000AUD in the process....... so I'm not toooooo butt hurt that you jumped ship, just as I got my R. I think all these people commenting ‘should of got this, should of got that’ clearly don’t understand what a great car is all about. Last of its kind this, and is all about the drama. It’s easy and boring pelting a 4wd car around some twisty roads. This on the other hand, just makes you smile whilst shitting your pants. I had one and loved it and when it opens up it would ruin any other hot hatch. Enjoy it mate, just stick a jb4 on it and it’ll be quick enough.

Great decision! I've had loads of hot hatches over the years the m140 is my favourite second was the golf edition 30. The m140 Is so good I've had 2 of them. Most people who dislike them have never driven one because everyone who has driven mine has absolutely loved it. I really like the golf r but I think the gti looks better and although slower much prefer the character of the old r32.

Maverick 41 and you pay an exclusive price. Not everyone has 50,000 smackers to spend on a specc’d up RS3. I do Love the RS3 though, don’t get me wrong, but that’s a dream hot hatch for me! The m140 is extremely good value for money !

Take it to Litchfield. Get the akrapovic downpipe and full system. Quaife LSD and the Litchfield remap. Mines producing 455bhp on the dyno. Couldn’t recommend it more.

Ive got an S1 hoping to get golf R soon but I do like the m140i and it’s crazy you got one and I’d take one but I gotta say I’d rather a golf R. The m140I is so quick but it just looks too much like a regular 1 series for me

I think my 1st cosmetic upgrade could be a clubsport spoiler. Plus would love an Akropovic Exhaust. Enjoy that 6 cylinder sound.
I thought you’d go for an RS 3 for some reason. I currently own a MK 7 Golf R and I very nearly purchased an M140i instead. I love my Golf R but I’m fairly sure I’ll be swapping it out for an RS 3 next. You’ve made a good choice though and I don’t blame you at all. Hope you enjoy it.

Huge congrats. Great choice. I got mine in July from factory with adaptive dampers and an MPerformance LSD. Adaptive suspension has been replaced with Birds B1 Suspension and an underbody brave has been added. What a transformation. The car is perfect now! However there is the B12 kit which is cheaper. I also replaced the 6.5 inch screen with an 8.8 inch screen bought on eBay for £200.

It’s funny that people give up the engagement of a manual for an automatic that is < 1s faster to 100km/h, or the safety/capability of AWD for RWD, or a lovely adjustable exhaust note for a terrible droning too loud mess. Reading too much into the specs I suppose. Perhaps I’m too practical, but then again this is a TH-cam car and I suppose change is good! I hope he doesn’t get into any trouble with the RWD... not really an option here with the snow!

Still have my a1 after 5 years straight turbo back exhaust with extreme pop and bang map. 1.4 with 161hp and 230lb. Thinking of getting a 1.5 Seat Leon fr dsg black edition but I'm so attached to my a1 and all the work that's been done but alot (£7500) has went into repairs alone 😒. But I can't mod the lean as I want own it.
Congrats! It is a good car, i had a white one, but interior is out dated. Just trade in for Z4 M40i. It is much better i think on the look.
