This is the last thing the Jamaican government needs to focus on. We have hundreds of major hotels and corporations operating in Jamaica and the average citizens aren’t seeing much of any of those dollars they rake in. The government needs to focus on cleaning out governmental corruption so that money can be distributed properly and fully develop the country where the average citizen can benefit from the modern opportunities before we focus on making any foreigners comfortable in Jamaica

The idea, obliviously, is for these nomads to spend money in Jamaica while they're in the country. The big issue, as many other commenters have pointed out, of that this money doesn't flow out to the average Jamaican. The only effect they see is inflated prices for housing, food, etc. Unless the government can figure out a way for this to benefit the average Jamaican, it shouldn't be pursued. The government still hasn't figured out a way for the tourism industry to benefit the average Jamaican, and that industry has existed in the country for decades.
Jamaica's living costs are higher than some parts of the U.S. A digital nomad would not last more than a few months before taking off to a place where everything makes more sense. It's unlikely a person is gonna move to Jamaica and want to live in a garrison community where many residents either don't pay rent, for water or electricity. Anywhere else and the cost for everything rivals first world places.
Wouldn't this be bad for the natives? I mean those people would be able to use their foreighn income to further drive up the cost of housing, food and other commodities. Basically out competing the natives who are not rich enough to benefit from their presence. I remember seeing a video where in some parts Mexico it got so bad that restaurants started adjusting the recipe of their traditional foods to accommodate the pallet of the expats from the US.
Why don’t we try to create more to export to generate foreign exchange? Yes why not carry more foreigners to drive up the cost of living ? Jamaica charges so much for me to ship in something and yet we produce nothing so I cant invest in my country instead of seeking it abroad. Always hear they speak about Jamaicas low productivity level but I am yet to see the government come up with any innovative way to diversify our economy or produce. What is the government really doing ? And yea I don’t think providing nomad visas benefits anybody except specific people. In the long run will do more harm than good.
What is wrong with these people? We dont have enough housing in jamaica. The locals will be on the street when tourists drive up local cost of food and housing.
I keep saying we're some of the most intelligent people on the planet but are slow to adapt our economy and seize opportunities to develop our country. Every successful country grows by utilising the best talent in the world to their advantage. The US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Singapore, Dubai etc. You name the country and we can point to immigration. Even in the case of closed homogeneous societies such as China and Japan where immigration is mostly internal but both spend huge investment to send their people abroad for education and to create executive linkages that could be used later to attract foreign investment. Jamaican politicians are too parochial and lack vision. So many countries have used the pandemic to take advantage of the opportunity to attract middle class workers and benefit from their spending power and long-term linkages. What's the downside? So why aren't we working on it? We used better technology infrastructure and improved security but both aren't insurmountable.
All of those countries that you mentioned are producing and exporting, Jamaica is not. Stop the comparison all Jamaica is focusing on is tourism and you saw what has been happening for the past month in that sector . Can't be putting on a roof on a house and there is no foundation
We don't need digital nomads in Jamaica. That will only drive up the cost of housing.
We need to focus on our citizens. The cost of housing is high enough for locals already.

Very good idea, working online isn't new, Jamaica is just behind time, it tool covid for us to actually start checking on remote work...
I commend this. But the cost of living is high enough for locals as it is. Its only gonna drive up cost of living for locals
Government not capitalizing on millions of dollars for the digital visas, not to mention taxes for their income being made ,smh.
Very interesting to hear this, especially being a Jamaican who is living the digital nomadic lifestyle. 🎉❤
