Turnabout Countdown chronologically took place in the middle of the trial of Solomon Starbuck, so technically, Turnabout Countdown is Juniper Woods' second trial, for the murder of Candice Arme, the assault on Apollo Justice, and the bombing of Courtroom #4. Gaspen Payne was subsequently fired effective immediately for harassing Athena Cykes and Juniper Woods during that trial case, by Chief Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, which explains how Gaspen Payne ended up in the Kingdom of Khura'in.

I'm saddened by how little Athena we got in Spirit of Justice. She's phenomenal in Dual Destinies, and what little we get of her in SoJ is great, but she's only properly present in 2 cases, and only works one of them. The remixes to her courtroom themes are so great, too!
Yeah but on the bright side it was her first case without Apollo or phoenix. and she finished the case without investigating the case. she went with the flow and blackquil helped her on the way.
yeah it was more of a filler case. but still it's pretty cool. just hope in the next game they give her a solo final case like apollo.
Tbh this was Apollo's game - an opportunity that was squandered with AA:AJ. Hopefully we'll get another game where she gets to shine.
I disliked the case we get to play as her. It felt like filler. It probably was just filler to give Athena a role and to make the game have 5 chapters total. I love all the other cases in the game though, but Athena definitely got the shaft. She might be the star in the next game though, since you know what happens at the end of this game.
yeah, dual destinies showed most of her past about her mom's death, and pretty much got her side done, but never explained what she did in Europe, so maybe they can make a flashback case when she and wright first meet and do a case together, then in the next game, they show she had a rival thier and comes to the states to defeat her. that can be a good game.
I believe the concept is amazing, but lets remember that Athena's first time in court during a trial was with Apollo officially, and her first time standing in court as the lead attorney was during the Themis Academy issue, and finally her first attempt at standing in Trial alone was during the tutorial trial. and to get really technical, the DLC case of Dual destinies is her actual first time in court working with Phoenix Wright. if I had to say what would make a good Athena storyline, involving someone from her past would be great, but instead why not instead make it so that she is the one to save the Wright Anything Agency single handed. Wright and Justice managed miracles in their 3rd game appearances, why not Athena?

God... I loved how she progressed in her SOJ case with the Mod Matrix's help. Even though Apollo is my favorite character, Athena's analytical psychology is my favorite way of finding the truth. She has a lot of potential.
What I really love about it is that she gets the truth out of people by actively calming them down and giving them light emotional therapy. It feels very different from the usual pressure based cross examination style of the other attorneys. It's especially good in Case 5 of SoJ where she helps Armie overcome her shut-in state and come out as a witness in person. That really was a moment that felt like it was uniquely caused by Athena's style rather than Apollo's.
one thing I absolutely adore about this theme is how confident it sounds. The Dual Destinies rendition of this theme is a bit weak for me. It sounded confused and uncertain- and it was due, considering the events of the game. However, with THIS one, it feels as though Athena has moved on from her past and is ready to forge ahead to the future alongside Apollo and Phoenix and everyone else.
The main reason why Athena is my favorite of the 3 defense trio. Hell, she's my favorite character in general.
And of course she only gets Turnabout Storyteller

Magical Turnabout is no Filler case. Trucy is the defendant, the very agency is on the line, and it's some strong character development for Trucy. If the AA fan base considers Magical Turnabout a filler case; than that is the best one of them all by a mile. But if you ask me; Turnabout Storyteller is the Filler case for Spirit of Justice, and Magical Turnabout is anything but filler.

I don't know. At the time when I wrote that comment, I felt all the action belonged to Phoenix yet again, so Magical Turnabout seemed almost like filler since it wasn't in Khu'rain
I didn't really like trial 4 of SoJ. It felt out of place and didn't fit into the rest of the game. That being said, trials 2, 3, and 5 were amazing and this is my second favorite Ace Attorney game after T&T. T&T was just too perfect of an ending for the original trilogy. Nothing will probably top it.

@@Teezy6354 Nah, I don't think the next game has any need for it revolve around Apollo, especially with how SoJ ended with Apollo (spoiler to anyone reading) choosing to stay in Khura'in. Apollo probably will return to some degree, 100%, but I think he'd get less time focuses on him, especially since Apollo has had his trilogy now, he has gotten his back-stories and we've seen him grow as an attorney already the same way we saw it with Phoenix. Now it should be Athena's turn.

@@waffo_ I'd say Apollo only got the short end of the stick with DD. While I still enjoyed his role in that game, it didn't feel like it was Apollo's game considering his backstory while big for Apollo's character in DD, isn't major to the plot itself, unlike in SoJ where his backstory there played a big part in the final case. This and also the fact DD tried balancing the return of Phoenix Wright AND introducing a new lawyer despite only just being introduced to Apollo a game before it? Yeah in DD he got screwed over. Otherwise though AJ:AA and SoJ have a bigger focus on Apollo so to that extent, I'll include DD as an "Apollo Trilogy" game. Ofc this is ignoring the fact that AJ:AA, DD and SoJ are all gonna be in an "Apollo Trilogy" bundle release anyways lol

Without that, she's a self-proclaimed Great Thief with a f*cking machine that's capable of recreating an entire space. And she's Edgeworth's fangirl.
Besides these, the difference is their backstories, really.

The main difference i find between them is their actual character arc.
While Maya arc is all about becoming a responsible about her duties as a master and about protecting people around her, Athena's is about to forget her past and don't let it affect her actual talent. Yes, they are similar characters, but their arcs affect them in a different way in the present.
It doesn't matter really. I love both of them.
I also disagree. Just because they're cheerful doesn't mean they're Maya clones. Every single one of them is distinct and their unique lines can't be interchangeable with one another.

I know Phoenix was a joke character in MvC3, but this theme honestly makes me want to play Athena in a Marvel vs Capcom game. Imagine, instead of stalling for 3 evidence, you need to land combo strings (since she's wayy more aggressive) for 4 moods, and landing the objection would trigger this theme and activates Widget :OOO

So, with not much to go off of, here's my view of the ace attorney series and why i believe ace attorney 7 will be athena's game.
I think we can all agree that the original three games form a trilogy. Phoenix develops throughout all of it, emerging the legendary character that he is today. However, i believe that games 4-6 make up the apollo trilogy in the same way that 1-3 are the phoenix trilogy and here's how:
Game 1 is the introduction to our main lawyer. We meet his mentor and his assistant, we meet his rival prosecutor, we see his start in the industry. Both also have to deal with cases relating to personal stuff with their mentor - phoenix has to uncover the truth behind mia's murder and apollo has to bring his own mentor kristoph to justice.
Game 2 expands the character's mythos. For phoenix, this means the introduction of pearl and the lore behind the fey clan, and for apollo, this means the introduction of athena and the story of clay terran. Both games also feature a return of the rival prosecutor from the first game (though klavier has a much smaller role in dd than edgeworth does in jfa). Both protagonists also go through a difficult situation with phoenix having to defend a guilty client and apollo having to deal with his best friend's death. However, we also start to see differences here. Phoenix got his lawyer-gimmick in jfa, while apollo got his game 1. Edgeworth is a major character in the entire phoenix trilogy, while klavier shows up for one case in dd and not at all in soj. These differences help keep the formula fresh.
Lastly, game three. Widely considered to be the best in their trilogy, these games are major reasons for why we like these characters. In phoenix's case, we get his backstory with dahlia hawthorne and a game-spanning storyline all about defeating her. For apollo, we get his entire backstory laid out. We meet his adoptive siblings, his adoptive father, and we get to find out more about his actual father. Also in both cases, the stakes were never higher. Maya is the target of a plot to take over kurain village, while apollo is roped into full-on revolution of an entire kingdom. Both games feature massive dramatic scenes, like fawle's (was that his name? The felon in the mia case) suicide and the reveal of dhurke's death, both games end with the final case having the student working side by side with and surpassing their mentors, both games have a heavy focus on the spiritual... However, we also get even more differences. Playing as mia and edgeworth was novel in tat, but we've been cycling between lawyers ever since dd, so playing as phoenix and athena here is just normal. Also, i realize that the amount of cases apollo gets in dd and soj is pretty small for his trilogy, but both games have him as a story focus, while phoenix was for the most part just the player's medium of viewing the story unless dahlia was involved.
This leads us to now, with no new game in four years. I believe that the next game will be the formal start to the athena trilogy. However, it will deviate the most from the "classic" formula. We already have two games of character for athena, so the game won't be about her first cases; unless they write trucy out of the story, she already has an assistant; she already has a rival in blackquill; and her story seems to be pretty much over, as her backstory was all covered in dd, so the trilogy would have to do something new for her.
I might just be pulling stuff out of my behind here. Maybe i'm seeing patterns where there aren't any. Either way, athena deserves her own game, and i'd say capcom knows that that's what the fans want. So, the chances of ace attorney 7 being athena cykes: ace attorney? They're pretty good.

I distinctly remember the first time this theme played in her SoJ case, and I just let it rock for about 10 minutes straight.
I can't decide if this version or the Dual Destinies version is better. They're both amazing.

I think if Athena got a properly handled game of her own it would be good if they did it right. They could really spin the series in a new way but keep what we love about it, while making it refreshing. They could even reintroduce Franziska which would be cool, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable. Sell it as fan service but I would love to see Simon vs Franziska, sword vs whip in the courtroom. Athena vs Franziska would be really cool.
Maybe even introducing the jurists system properly, as it was done in Great Ace Attorney
I just find it sad that Athena got majorly backseated in this game. Only one case and it had nothing to do with the overall story!
KytanoSkorpius Not only that, but they kind of backed off most of her character development from 5-3, considering that if Simon wasn't saving her ass every 10 minutes she probably would have lost. (Although that partially was because she didn't investigate and was really thrown on to the case by Simon in the first place.)

@@Kai4life4 I don't hold Athena being out of her game in that case against her. She came to court in a rush, alone and with no knowledge of the case, against a ruthless prosecutor who tried using her sensitive hearing against her not too long after she finally started coming to terms with her own past and confidence.
Having Simon by her side is not too different from Phoenix being bailed out by Mia, Maya or the prosecutor in his own first cases; and it gave the chance to develop the connection between Athena and Simon after their connected pasts were finally dealt with.
Also, the chance to see Simon knocking Prosecutor Sad Monk down a notch or two was awesome to see!
