Of the nine batters in each league's starting line-up, 5 are Hall Of Famers. Both starting pitchers are also in the Hall Of Fame.
For us in Puerto Rico this 1997 ASG was one of a kind. We have 5 players with plaques in Cooperstown and three of them, Edgar Martínez, Iván Rodríguez and Roberto Alomar, were part of the AL starting line-up.
The winning pitcher José Rosado is puertorrican, as well as the players who produced (drove in &/or scored) all the runs in the game: Javier López (NL) and Edgar hit solo shots, and the game's MVP Sandy Alomar Jr hit another HR with Bernie Williams on base to decide the contest. Unforgettable !!! ⚾

1997 MLB All Star game represents the contribution of Puerto Rico to the American pastime. All 4 runs of the game, 3 from the American League and 1 from the National League were score and batted in by puertoricans. Also the winning pitcher was from PR. One of the greatest day in the memories of all Puerto Rico baseball players in the history of the game.

because a minority succeeding in this country is always going to be more of a feel good story than a white person succeeding. People of those minorities have a right to feel more excited to see their culture thriving and represented by someone successful. When a white person succeeds, well they are the majority and they are the ones who have the greatest control of the society, so there's really nothing remarkable about the fact that they are white. It can still be a feel good story because of that white person's journey or individual circumstances, but the white people of the media do not have the same obligation to cover white athletes as minorities do, at the same time, it's also not racist for minorities to provide favorable coverage as long as they are still respectful of white athletes (and other minorities) in the process. The system, not so much in sports, but in American society, is set up to favor white people.

What a lot of people may not know was that about a month before the all star game, Walker's Colorado Rockies played at Seattle and in one of the games Randy Johnson was the starting pitcher. Walker sat out that game that Johnson started purely out of the fact that he didn't want to bat against the Big Unit. I know this and remember this because I attended that game. So it actually didn't surprise me at all when this happened. If anything, it was hilarious.

Many argue that the All-Star game wasn’t as dazzling as it used to be starting this year since interleague play became a thing. Yet people don’t complain about the NFL doing interconference play and millions of people will watch the Super Bowl. Baseball fans are the worst. 🙄

Why is Caminiti wearing the alternate jersey?

I remember reading that they just wanted to mix it up. The Padres had 2 different road jerseys at that time, so they decided to showcase both of them.

GODDAMN!!! AND I thought Joe Carter was booed really bad in the 1996 all-star game.. Poor Albert Belle. It's like they only voted him in so they can boo the fuck out if him....
He was once your clean-up slugger, and THIS is how you treat him because another team offered him more money. If you where in his shoes, you might have done the same thing. Just shows how evil fans can be. Maybe this is why he didn't attend the reunion of the 1995 team. He looked at Baseball as a business, and he got paid to hit a ball over the wall.

+JoJoGunn it's weird how Albert Belle was interested signing with the Yankees after the 1998 season but Brian Cashman denied him, he made a smart move to sign Bernie Williams
