Arguments can be made about different generations of players, but I think a big part of why they played their hearts out in old All-Star Games was that they were still two different leagues at that time, with two different league presidents, and no interleague play. There was actual pride to be had, unlike the meaningless conferences in MLB -- and every other sport -- today.
I barely remember Kubek and Joe G broadcast team of this time period. However from the YT I seen of Joe G and Kubek, especially the 1978 and '80 World Series, they did a good job. NBC in this era I am assume following the trend of former players doing both Play-Play and Color Analysts being a popular staple especially in the late 1970's following the popularity of NFL Monday Night Football i.e Gifford, Meredith and Cosell. Now in period of defined roles, Commentators/Analysts doing any Play-Play rarely exists any more in MLB or on NBA, NFL and NHL TV broadcasts as well. Just surprised NBC did not add in say either a Scully, Harwell or say a then unknown young man Al Micheals to be the main Commentator after Curt Gowdy was fired following I think the 1975 World Series. And say Joe G doing the middle innings as say Don Drysdale did with Keith Jackson and Howard Cosell for ABC during this same era as well.

I agree these were the best uniforms of all-time in any sport really as well so much color and great looks. They got back to being boring later in the 80s.
@@rickirubio3973, HOUSTON ASTROS post 1969 Navy as the primary color= early 1970's to mid-70's only NON-RAINBOW, with Orange as the primary, no yellow or red or burnt orange stripes was their best uniform ever. The Navy of the '65-69 era was second best. Third best was the COLT 45's, saw them play in those in '63 vs. NY METS, even though I knew nothing about baseball and tried to fall asleep in the eighth inning. Fourth best was the non-rainbow, but striped rainbow shoulders, very light gray roadies, of the 80's till early 90's when they went to the god-awful blue and gold. I could tolerate the brick red of ENRON/MIN.MAID early years, then the ones now have grown on me, somewhat. I am no longer a Stros fan since they moved to the A.L. with my KC ROYALS in 2013 or '14, can't remember. But, I'm qualified to talk Astros unis since I was a fan from '66-2013('71-2013 or '14 as fave N.L. CLUB, KCity from '71-present as fave A.L. CLUB, AND KC AS FAVE MLB TEAM 2013 OR 14 till present)or '14, lol. I did root for them in the 2017 playoffs& W.Series. I know what the fans in Houston went through all those years. I even went to the WCHAMPIONSHIP PARADE, ONE OF 800,000 THAT DAY.

The best allstar game I ever saw. Watched it with my Grandma Eva McCauley. She let me stay up to watch the whole game. She loved basebal and loved her Yankees but hated, "that George Steinberger".
This was the best MLB All Star game I can remember ever played. I was 14 at the time and remember how this was the most competitive of any sports all star games.
i was so into baseball as a little kid in the late 70's and 80's, used to watch local sports on the 11 o'clock news to see any highlights, then this week in baseball on the weekends. Read the box scores and league leaders every day in the Paper, the Sunday Paper always had the expanded baseball stats. Collected baseball cards, so I knew all the players, just Great times to be a baseball fan. Really in those days baseball stars were the biggest sports stars in team sports in the 70's

Dave Parker saved 2 runs on 2 incredible, never-before seen All-Star throws from right field corner, and had a sacrifice RBI. Plus it came from the best all-around player in the league at the time. MVP vote to "The Cobra" was a no-brainer!
Notice how Andrea McArdle absolutely nailed BOTH national anthems? Up-tempo, the right phrasing, didn't change the melodies, no over-singing. I wish the pop-tart singers of today and recent years would watch this to see how those two tunes SHOULD be performed.

I was a 16 y/o suffering Mets fan and Lee Mazzilli gave me a taste of future Mets glory with his game-tying and winning efforts in the 8th and 9th innings (Off Guidry no less!). And future Mets World Champions Keith Hernandez and Gary Carter hitting back-to back....little did I know what was to come!
I was 8 in 1979 when the All Star game happened at the Kingdome in Seattle. A great game I watched on King 5 TV (NBC affiliate in Seattle), but the Kingdome was an ugly concrete and ceiling tile blob that more than served the purpose to house the MLB Mariners, the NFL Seahawks and the 1979 NBA champion Seattle Supersonics !!! This game was the highlight of the Mets season in ‘79. Mazzilli hits a pinch hit HR off Kern to tie the game and then walks off Guidry to drive in the go ahead run. The Mets were brutal in ‘79.
What a fun game in a wierd stadium! Like a game on concrete the way the ball bounces and every flyball is an adventure getting lost in the ceiling. Seaver was an astute analyst.

I know Tom Seaver is a Hall of Fame 1st ballot inductee but I feel he should also be in the announcer hall of fame as well. One of my favorite World Series is game 6 of the 1977 World Series. Keith Jackson Howard Cosell( (my all-time favorite) and Tom Seaver He is so knowledgeable of the game and makes it so exciting.

I went to High School with Lonny Parker. Dave Parkers little Brother. He too was a good Baseball player too! I always wondered how come the Cincinnati Reds didn't get Dave Parker like they got Pete Rose? Because in 1979 The Pirates swept the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 to win the National League Pennant and go to face the Baltimore Orioles. I remembered that because I just completed my Freshman year at the University of Cincinnati. Also my Grandpa played baseball with Danny Murtaugh in Philadelphia when he was younger. What a small world it is!
Just think ... it would be more than a decade before the Mariners would make the playoffs and have one of the best teams in baseball with The Kid, Edgar, ARod, and the big unit.
And that 95 team was what went on to save baseball in Seattle, who I believe were bound for Tampa Bay, if that miracle run didn't happen. That which got them their needed new building, and a long term secure future in Seattle down the road too.

And back in the days when the Phillies were stacked. Schmidt, Boone, Bowa, and Carlton started with Rose on the bench. They would finish 4th that year but won it all the following year.
And that was the 8th inning. Can you imagine a starter in today's era playing into the 8th inning? I think Dave Winfield also played deep into the game - 8 inning?

Dave Parker's throw is/was certainly great, but Gary Carter's protection of home plate is/was just as instrumental for the out being recorded. Gary Carter would've been the best overall catcher in the National League, if it wasn't for a HOF MLB player named Johnny Bench...
1:40:36 Chet Simmons left NBC Sports to pursue other opportunities. That opportunity was being the first president for some little station called ESPN. He oversaw the development of SportsCenter, first broadcasts of the NFL draft and was the first commissioner of the USFL. He died in 2010 at the age of 81. What an amazing life.

Baseball...When the grass WASN'T real! LOL!! Sure was great to see 'The Meal Ticket', the late, GREAT Carl Hubbell...KING CARL!! It seems 'weird' now when the ump doesn't throw that ball out of the game when a pitch hits the ground! LOL!! Crazy stuff in these older games: garbage all over the field in New York which isn't all that surprising but in Game 4 of the '76 World Series and a car driving on the warning track (to bring pitchers in from the dugout) and here @ 52:23 as Fred Lynn hits his first inning HR a baseball goes flying behind him. I wonder if it distracted Steve Carlton or if he even knew it?

I have read that this ASG was the last time any umpires wore ties in a major league game of any kind. I was unaware of that fact when I was watching this live on TV at age 12!
Aaron Boone was just a kid back then at 1:24:51 into this game. But now he looks so mightily stressed. Difficult to even believe he ever was a little kid to look at him now. Wow! Being Yankees manager is massively stressful.
They still clowned around then, as they were more in it to have fun, and not big Million $ contracts, the change began happening in the mid to late 80s where corporatism was taking shape.
Imagine what Joe Morgan is feeling like. He was MVP of the National League 75 and 76. He didn't get the start, plus he's gotta throw to first base to Pete Rose whose wearing a Phillies Uniform now! Crazy how you see the difference in these guys and today's batters. None of these guys stood in that batters box with any kind of confidence that they wouldn't be thrown at, brushed back or whatever. And it's the All-Star game! The batters today stand on top of the plate with armor on their arms and legs diving into pitches with no fear of getting hit.

the 1970s were the greatest decade for major league baseball uniforms. plus it was great to see my cousin roy smalley.

Great to see Mike Schmidt who isn't heard from or about much. What a superstar of a 3rd baseman. My God was he good! Hell of a hitter with style.
I was an Expos fan and nobody scared me more as an opposing hitter more than Schmidt. And he usually killed us.

When I was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington in 1969, I was fortunate enough to attend a few of the Seattle Pilots games at Sicks Stadium.
I loved how the Kingdome had the team logos on the fences Instead of the advertisements we see today.
If they had had a homerun derby in 1979 at the Kingdome, it probably would’ve gone to 3 o’clock in the morning.

I used to watch the All-star Game every year in 70s-80s-90s. I can't even sit through regular season games anymore. They've really ruined baseball.

Dave Parker's throw is/was certainly great, but Gary Carter's protection of home plate is/was just as instrumental for the out being recorded.
Gary Carter would've been the best overall catcher in the National League, if it wasn't for a HOF MLB player named Johnny Bench...

Baseball...When the grass WASN'T real! LOL!! Sure was great to see 'The Meal Ticket', the late, GREAT Carl Hubbell...KING CARL!! It seems 'weird' now when the ump doesn't throw that ball out of the game when a pitch hits the ground! LOL!! It also is nice to see just the game on the screen and not all the freakin' crap they have on the screen today!

Crazy stuff in these older games: garbage all over the field in New York which isn't all that surprising but in Game 4 of the '76 World Series and a car driving on the warning track (to bring pitchers in from the dugout) and here @ 52:23 as Fred Lynn hits his first inning HR a baseball goes flying behind him. I wonder if it distracted Steve Carlton or if he even knew it?

This is the year i started following BB at 9 yrs old.
I was 9 also but believe it or not started following in 74. By 75 I had collected over 120 topps cards with the quarters my Grandpa would give me.

@@daBEAGLE1017 Yeah, I had the Brett. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the cards anymore but I am in the process (literally, as you sent this message) of recreating my collection electronically. I collected 1975 to 1978 (we moved overseas in 79) and I had over 270 cards.

I have read that this ASG was the last time any umpires wore ties in a major league game of any kind. I was unaware of that fact when I was watching this live on TV at age 12!

Aaron Boone was just a kid back then at 1:24:51 into this game. But now he looks so mightily stressed. Difficult to even believe he ever was a little kid to look at him now. Wow! Being Yankees manager is massively stressful.

They still clowned around then, as they were more in it to have fun, and not big Million $ contracts, the change began happening in the mid to late 80s where corporatism was taking shape.

Crazy how you see the difference in these guys and today's batters. None of these guys stood in that batters box with any kind of confidence that they wouldn't be thrown at, brushed back or whatever. And it's the All-Star game! The batters today stand on top of the plate with armor on their arms and legs diving into pitches with no fear of getting hit.
