Again, this tool & way of thinking about costs is an estimation. My first example estimation = $4,700. Then I try to bring the cost down to $3,000, and explain how i.e. the tradeoffs. This is not absolute, so don't worry if your estimation reaches $7k, $8k, etc. Honestly, that's not an uncommon total cost to hike this trail. But it's a great place to start, and figure out next steps. Cheers!

Good place for people to start thinking about the costs. $10 for food is low to very low for most hikers including through hikers and $40 per zero is low period. Most people want to eat and drink like crazy when they're off trail. That ends up either jacking up that zero cost or the food cost, depending on where you want to put it. I don't spend that much on food, but lots of people go for the name brand trail bars and Mt. House/Backpacker Pantry foods or special healthy alternatives that cost an arm and a leg and maybe another arm. I go for mixed nuts, and jerky at the high cost end and instant mashed potatoes, knorr sides, and instant refried beans as the basis for my meals. I still spend $8 per day on food on hikes longer than a weekend. Definitely shopping around for equipment, looking for sales, using Target synthetic shirts instead of the expensive outdoor name brands can really reduce costs as well. The only problem is knowing which cheaper alternatives work and which are cheap garbage. My best score was a Six Moon Designs 65L pack that weighs 39 oz. and they rate for loads up to 50Lbs for $65 on clearance. People hated the color. I see the redesigned pack weighs more and costs over $200. You can get cheaper lightweight quilts from Enlightened Equipment and Jacks R Better. I love my Enlightened Equipment 20 degree quilt, so warm and so compressible. Once again, nice video, and I hope you have fun on the trail again this summer. Maybe try some less crowded trails. Just off the PCT in the Sierra is beautiful and uncrowded. The Trinity Alps and Marble Mountains are also beautiful and uncrowded depending on where you go.

sales are key, save money on gear. don't get the stuff full price unless it's an emergency. I've gotten 85 percent of my stuff on sale from various websites or stores. don't just buy it at rei because it's simple and a cool store look elsewhere and save some money for actual trips

Or sometimes it's the opposite. People will quit their job, spend $4000 just on equipment, and start out on the PCT as they FIRST hike, only to find out they don't like hiking after a couple of days. I'm still trying to figure that one out...

My budget is €30,000 all inclusive
That includes gear, trail expenses, insurance, flights, accommodation, I'll be doing it SOBO in 2022 or 2023. I'm Irish, I have a mortgage too. Including lost income for 6 months it's actually closer to €80,000. Yikes 😬 It'll be so worth it though, cannot put a price on that experience.

Worth factoring in loss of income from the job you will have to quit in order to hike. That would put the cost of hiking the trail at closer to $20,000.00 realistically unless you are a bum before you start the hike anyhow. And then another $1,000.00 or so to search for another job when u get done with the hike.
