I've just bought the 2017 13" one for school. It has good battery and should easily have enough power for basic web browsing and teams. I just like how it looks and I'm not too fussed with the butterfly keyboard. I decided to switch from my RTX 3050 gaming laptop for school as it was too heavy. Hopefully the macbook works well.
The issue with the butterfly keyboard is when it starts to fail and the keys double click. It's absolutely infuriating and makes the device nearly useless. I hope you don't have issues with it.
@@joud2114 I now have a 2016 that got a keyboard replacement in 2020. It works like a dream, and I love it! I wouldn't buy it though - the keyboard issues are especially worrisome and make an expensive purchase THAT much more expensive if it stops working right. I'd try to get an M1 MacBook Air if you can - it's so much better of a machine battery life and performance wise, and you'll get updates for the rest of your time at university.
Agree, I was given dead 2015 MacBook Pro 13 from a friend. I have purchased i7 16gb logic board from eBay for $70 and invested about 30 minutes of my life to replace the logic board... It runs like a champ now, best $70 I ever spent 😎
I would lean towards the 2015 model because those 2017’s have dying keyboards and it’ll likely fail on you. The 2017 is a much nicer device overall, but I think the 2015 will actually work for you, unlike the 2017 which will break.

Depending on the config they are about the same price. I would use to edit some videos, photos and light office tasks. I found a MacBook Pro 2017 with this configs - i7 2.8GHz - 16GB RAM - 256GB SSD - AMD Radeon Pro 555 2GB - Intel UHD Graphics 630 1.5GB It’s around $600-$650. I’m doing my research and people are saying things about the keyboard and I got concerned. Is it better to go for a MBP 2018-2019 13 inch than this 2017 15 inch because of the keyboard?

I would say, if you can, avoid any MacBook from 2016-2019, the butterfly keyboard is going to give you issues if you have the device for enough time. If you at all can, try to find an M1 machine. It’s worth the money and will treat you so well. I had to look a bit for it, but I just bought a 2020 MacBook Pro M1 for $600 on eBay. I’m in the States, where it’s probably the easiest and cheapest to find them though.
Would you recommend a refurbished macbook pro 2017 16GB 512GB in 2023? Do you still get updates? Since I've never had an apple pc would that be a good idea?
The updates just ended for the 2017, so I wouldn’t recommend it. I’d try to find an M1 MacBook Pro or Air if you at all can. It’s a far superior device, and the performance on it is triple this device.
Flexgate seems to be rare enough - I had one that had it but it doesn't seem to affect most. It's probably worth it to get a newer machine if at all possible, but I don't think Flexgate is a reason to NOT buy one.
It got Ventura, but it is the oldest computer that Apple has supported by Ventura. If it's not cut next year, it'll be cut the following year without a doubt.

Got an Mac Air M2. Battery Life was the selling point. But the intel ones with very low pricetags are also a steal.

I am still using a 2015 13 inch model that I changed the battery and SSD and also put in an i7 mobo. It works great!

The apple silicon Air is far beyond the 2017 in performance, but I still think the 2016, 2017 15” MacBooks can hold their own.

Yep, it's an SSD! Premiere Pro and Photoshop would work well enough, but at this point they're being optimized for newer devices.
