Why Apple Removed The MacBook's Touch Bar

  • In 2016 Apple introduced new MacBook Pro models that featured the Touch Bar. A narrow touch-sensitive glass display at the top of the keyboard. Apple promised it would offer intuitive new ways to interact with content. But with their latest MacBook Pro release, the Touch Bar was removed. And there are a few reasons for this.

@@GeorgeVenturi Having the touchbar remove existing keys removed functionality. It would've been more futuristic as an extra bar over the function/media keys or at the bottom of the screen. Apple "borrowed" the design from Lenovo's X1 Carbon Gen2 laptops which came out in 2014. However it looks like Apple failed to notice the massive failure of that design as Lenovo reverted away from that design in 2015 with the X1 Carbon Gen3 laptops. They could've improved greatly upon the design but instead they followed in the same mistaken footsteps as Lenovo but, unlike Lenovo, it took Apple years to admit their mistake. I predict that we will see the return of the touchbar as an extra row now that Apple seems to be actually listening to the demands and desires of their customers.

Idk what you were trying to say there, and I don’t know a single person who uses a laptop without touching the keyboard,if you want silent operation just lightly press the key, it’s not like they are cherry mx blues, and it wasn’t very customizable. > I love the feel of adjusting volume and brightness
    > It’s silent
    > Scrubbing through videos without using the popup, which is way faster and aesthetically pleasing (used it a lot for watching reference videos as an animator)
    > Skipping ads on TH-cam
I rarely use the function keys (I have a separate Magic Keyboard with Touch ID) so I am reluctant to upgrade to the newer MacBook Pro.

When I say any video, I mean any video. The only device in the world that lets you do so. Touch screen phones/tablets don't even give you that option.
I have a 13 M2 pro with Touch Bar, but display stopped working and instead of fixing it, I decided to get a M2 Air without a Touch Bar and its been hell for me to adjust especially with use of Emojis and auto correct option. It is just sad that some miserable people had to complain about it and made apple stop producing it 🤦🏾‍♂
Now I need to go back and fix my 13 pro M2 to get back into those good ol' times.

The point of the Touch Bar was to provide custom in app shortcut keys and custom keyboard function keys.
3rd party App developers never funded Touch Bar integration and Apple never funded Touch Bar integration so it basically failed.
The Touch Bar could have been great but no one wanted to fund (custom software implementation / user ease of use) to make it work.

I originally bought a MacBook Pro to produce music. I like the touchbar for things like word suggestions, volume, and brightness but that’s about it. Most of its uses are pretty pointless even with things like music production. A 2-inch slider is not precise enough to be used correctly. Even things like the emoji keyboard are pretty pointless. It is a good idea, you can essentially add an infinite amount of keys to a keyboard, but apple didn’t really do anything with it to make it worth it. They kinda just added it to charge you more money or to get you to come into the store if it breaks.

I had a 2019 MBP with Touch Bar for work. I never got used to it in the two years I’ve had it. Pulling off certain keyboard shortcuts relies on muscle memory and sensory feedback. I was never sure if a button got pressed on the bar without looking down, and that had always been frustrating.

I had a Touch Bar 16" MacBook Pro through my previous job and a few things struck me:
When using my laptop, I was in the "keyboard and mouse" mindset. There was very limited value in using the Touch Bar to adjusting controls that were already on screen, when all my other interaction with the GUI was via the trackpad.
When adjusting volume or screen brightness, I found the touch bar worse because the controls I needed were several taps away.
The touch bar's lack of force sensitivity and haptic feedback meant you had to look at it all the time for precise adjustments, there was no "near enough is good enough" like there is with keyboard keys, and there was a small risk of accidental input.

The only reason why I hated Touch Bar was because the escape key was built in the to bar. But until they made a seperate key I like it now.

I wouldn’t be able to answer that question unfortunately. The only MacBook that I’ve had was the one that I mentioned, which has an Intel processor. Granted, this was a number of years before Apple started using their own silicon. The next computer I’ll be getting is the minimum spec Mac Studio with the M1 Max chip, and I’ll be using it in tandem with my MacBook Pro. You know… After it gets fixed. It’s a long story. 😬

I personally like the touch bar. Apple please bring back touch bar. It is very useful for Autocorrect or Autocomplete, It helps me to make my mike to go on mute w/o using mouse or trackpad and many more such features

I really love the touch bar. I have the 19' MacBook pro with the physical escape key and the touch bar. I love the uniqueness of the touch bar. How you can customize it and add and remove different features on the touch bar.

No way, Made it look like some cheap windows third world computer. Pretty much everyone that loves it is more of a phone/ipad person while the people that don't like it are real power users.

One of the reasons I bought the Mbp M1 over the Mba was the touch; I wanted to try, and I find it more convenient than the function row which I had never used anyway

For the everyday users, they won’t remember what shortcuts are on the touchbar since the options change per application. Just a very convoluted idea unless you use the same applications everyday. While the function key still requires you to remember what you snapped to that key, it’s the same key stoke for every shortcut and doesn’t require you to look at the touchbar to make sure you press the correct one.

Honestly, I think people would’ve appreciated the Touchbar more if it had vibration feedback to simulate a button. It’s not a big deal for obvious reasons on a phone, but on a screen that is facing upwards, your face is TOWARDS the main display in front of you. You had to look down at the Touchbar to make sure you were pressing the right buttons which made it frustrating to use without having any feedback.

I specifically was looking for a M1 MBP, just because of the Touch Bar.
I love it with all my heart. Always use the available app shortcuts. Adjusting the volume/brightness is a breeze. Possibilities of customisation out-of-the-box aren't very rich, but good enough for most day-to-day use-cases.
With third-party apps you can replace even devices like Stream Deck or whatever. It can be very flexible, convenient and powerful.
I believe people criticising it don't want to bother to configure it for their own work-flows, because it should "just work out-of-the-box", like any other apple product.
But if you spend some time tinkering with it, you can turn it into a really powerful, pro feature.
People always bash Apple for things no being customisable enough, and yet when they give you an option to make it "yours" by providing functional flexibility, the feedback is so negative. :\
    Long live Touch Bar!

I am a programmer and have a touchbar on my 13” Pro. I wouldn’t say it is essential but I definitely prefer that over regular F keys that barely ever get used. Some shortcuts that are pretty useful is when in text editing apps you can easily switch from bold to regular or change text color without touching your mouse or trackpad, running code in VS studio and Xcode, etc.
Definitely would be nice to have an option to opt for the bar.

My favourite thing about the Apple Touch Bar is that you can fast forward TH-cam ads (skipping them) without waiting for the skip button or if they're a non skip ad you can fast forward it. its a bug but never fixed lol

I personally find the Touch Bar very helpful. I got the 13 inch version just because of one reason: it is the only model that still has the Touch Bar in it. I would prefer the Touch bar to be added alongside the physical keys.

I think a factor might have been that features like auto-complete led to the touch bar being banned from exam settings due to potentially giving a unfair speed advantage over other users (yes this was something that happened at least in certain institutions)

*Imagine a world where they included the touchbar above ALL keyboards...while the still kept the Function row...and all 3rd party apps had reasons to develop codes for the Touchbar because it was standard across ALL Macs...*
