The Vikings did something similar as well late this season (2022). They traded for JJ 2 years ago, as a top 5 receiver, and now slotting Hockenson and Thielen together later this season. They haven’t prioritized OL and that’s where Counsins’ problems have arised in terms of the no. of times he’s sacked. What let the Vikings down in the Playoffs against a team they had beat 2 weeks before, was their inability to contain a rushing QB. Well produced video- although the “trend” and stats you provided don’t really prove much. The quarterbacks getting rid of the ball quick really isn’t a phenomenon and is actually not optimal- teams want to be able to throw the ball downfield as well as quick
Very smart by all. The League has changed and the Offense has a big advantage. You get 2 Top Receivers and the Defense cannot double team both. If they do, it will drastically open up the run game, or easy passes to the TE, or RB coming out of the backfield.
It also helps that Burrow is like a surgeon when throwing the ball and has pocket mobility. This wouldn't work with a Brett Favre bc he didn't have that precision or a Drew Brees because he didn't have the pocket mobility.
I would say they invested in the defense, albeit with under the radar moves like Reader, Ogunjobi, Bell,Hendrickson, and Apple. Plus drafting Hubbard, and Bates. Bengals haven’t changed anything in the NFL. They just got a better QB than Andy Dalton with a better OL and receivers They ditched Marvin Probation Officer Lewis And if you watched any of the games the defense won a lot this year
This is an extremely simplistic view of the league and what the Bengals have done. What you are missing is that the bengals took weapons in the last couple drafts and filling the gaps with Vets. The reason they picked Chase was because we had two offensive line men that got hurt early in the season and in rookie camp.
Ima comment just from the title. As a cincy native I actually like our defense more than the offense. Defense is very underrated and I dont think that's bias to say.
Brownies are gonna need to get a stud to help out #2 (Cooper). Watson as the FQB, Cooper and DPJ...but they need another WR or a TE who can do both receiving and blocking duties.
Rule changes to increase player safety have benefited the passing game. So not only is the passing game getting more exposure, it's also getting more favorable rules. If Burrow and Chase went back to the 1970s in a time machine, they'd still be good, but not as good, with defenses free to pile-drive them.
Definitely, although now having just one elite receiver is not enough. Teams like the Eagles, Bengals, and Dolphins with 2 top receivers I think are the model for offensive success.
Don't need defence? Until they made the superbowl. Defence wins championships. 4 highest scoring teams of all time: 2013 Broncos- gave up 43pts in SB48 2007 Patriots- Giants only give up 14pts in SB42 2018 Chiefs- Lose AFC CG in overtime after losing the toss. That's unlucky, but it's why you need your defence. 2011 Packers- Give up 37pts in divisional rd vs Giants. One and done.
This is not a trend that the bengals started. This is how the nfl works. You get talent at qb then surround that with as many playmakers as you can afford.
Cincy's defense is as good as their offense. Yes, really. The offense is almost unstoppable. Almost. The defense bends a bunch, but it doesn't break. They barely gave up 2nd half TDs after Halloween. They contain every offense they face. Opponents struggle to get to 20 and usually their last score is garbage time to tighten up a score. I haven't seen the offense be 100% yet. I think they were gonna put on a show in the Bills game though. Against the Chiefs Boyd dropped the easiest TD of the season for the whole NFL, and Mac missed a FG. Burrow was off against the Ravens. (Off for Burrow is 3-4 bad passes.) Bengals are the most complete team in the AFC.
Let’s take this concept to the highest level, and then repeat it with running backs. Joe Burrow had Jamar Chase AND Justin Jefferson to throw to at LSU, and Lanard Fornette and Clyde-Edwards Helaire as his running backs. All five skilled positions with NFL starter caliber, three of them First team All Pro, and two of them finalists for the NFL’s MVP this year.
The analysis is interesting but beware of over-interpreting from a limited sample size. The Bengals took a big risk in 2021 failing to improve their O-line, resulting in Burrow absorbing 70 sacks. Had Burrow incurred another season-ending (or perhaps career-ending) injury, drafting Chase over Sewell might look like a mistake in hindsight. And in the 2022 season, both Miami and Philadelphia have seen their starting quarterbacks getting banged up. Tua's been in the concussion protocol twice in 2022, which is hardly sustainable, as each time a player is concussed, his susceptibility to the next concussion increases. Not to mention that the maximum number of NFL teams that can have at least one top-10 receiver is ... ten. There are more top-30 receivers, but at most 15 teams can have two top-30s, so even an approximation of this formula, say pairing the number 11 receiver with the number 25, can't cover even half of the NFL. The bottom line is that one formula cannot work for every team. The 22 teams without a top-10 receiver will have to do something else. Such as, maybe, build an O-line. Which is what the Bengals tried to do in free agency heading into the 2022 season. Drafting Chase looks more like a one-year gamble since neglecting the O-line was never the long-term play. No NFL quarterback is likely to have a long career while taking 70 sacks per season. Burrow's sack numbers are down in 2022 so the plan seems to be on schedule. Since NFL teams have a salary cap, the basic formula for winning is to have a lot of players on a roster who happen to be outplaying their contracts. The Bengals for example have a top-five QB and WR who are both on rookie contracts, giving the Bengals a massive MoneyBall advantage before Burrow and Chase have to get paid. Tee Higgins is also still on his rookie contract and represents a bargain for now. In contrast, it's much harder to succeed when you have to pay market price for talent. The Browns and Texans paid top dollar and multiple draft picks to bring in free agent quarterbacks who have thus far underperformed. To justify the price, Watson and Wilson would have to be playing like Hall of Famers. Thus the most predictive analysis might be to rank every player on every team both by his position and by his pay, and calculate each player's salary over/under relative to performance. (Also factoring in the damage from trading away high-value draft picks to bring in a player, as not only do draft picks give you a chance to get more talent, they get you talent at far below market price.) The team that has the most underpaid roster relative to performance is probably winning. But that formula is hard to sustain because players and their agents know exactly who is being underpaid and they aim to fix it.
@Omar I saw an interview where Burrow said he doesn't feel in the game til he's been hit a time or 2, he's just different. Tua needs to work on those neck muscles, or maybe just do drills to practice keeping his head from bouncing off the ground. I notice a lot of times his head bounces when he goes down, it's that jarring stop at the bounce that's killing Tua. If he'd stiffen that neck when he falls, he might not be getting knocked loopy all the time.
Bengals defense was the underrated mvp of their playoff run let’s not forget that.
For sure! I focused on just the offensive philosophy in this video however without their defense they would have never made it that far.
I agree. Burrow wasn't really spectacular. I mean we played good but the defense totally carried them.
Unfortunately Cooper kupp changed that
Yes.
But it wasn't the O line & that's the point. You can build a contender from guys who score points

A lot of teams were built this way long before 2021.
The Bengals with Chase, Higgins and Mixon are YAC monsters
This is an extremely simplistic view of the league and what the Bengals have done. What you are missing is that the bengals took weapons in the last couple drafts and filling the gaps with Vets. The reason they picked Chase was because we had two offensive line men that got hurt early in the season and in rookie camp.
Waiting for the contrary video about Philly doing it with the best O-line.
Philly fan here 👋
Go birds 🦅
Hey you think offensive lines are important?
@@felixd.4150 uh... yeah
Ima comment just from the title. As a cincy native I actually like our defense more than the offense. Defense is very underrated and I dont think that's bias to say.
TE Haden Hurst is also key and backs who can catch and run out of the backfield - hard to take away all of Joe's weapons
I was one of the people who was pissed off after they took Chase, but damn it I was so wrong
Brownies are gonna need to get a stud to help out #2 (Cooper). Watson as the FQB, Cooper and DPJ...but they need another WR or a TE who can do both receiving and blocking duties.
Their defense was the sole reason they didn’t get bounced in the first round lmaoo
Nice summoning salt music
Good content
Without chase. , burrows is nothing.
It doesnt matter who the Bengals face in the playoffs theyre beating everyone.
In the past, Stanford and Calvin johnson was a great combo, Brady and Moss, so it has always been a great just that it is getting more exposure
Rule changes to increase player safety have benefited the passing game. So not only is the passing game getting more exposure, it's also getting more favorable rules. If Burrow and Chase went back to the 1970s in a time machine, they'd still be good, but not as good, with defenses free to pile-drive them.
@@danielmocsny5066 That was random, I'm sure even Ray Lewis would look like a bitch in that era
Definitely, although now having just one elite receiver is not enough. Teams like the Eagles, Bengals, and Dolphins with 2 top receivers I think are the model for offensive success.
Same season.
2 teams.
2 runner ups.
No defense. (Or D-line)
2021-22 Cincinnati Bengals
2022 Philadelphia Phillies.
Who was better?
Numbers will never dictate what humans do in a combat league like the nfl
Don't need defence? Until they made the superbowl. Defence wins championships.
4 highest scoring teams of all time:
2013 Broncos- gave up 43pts in SB48
2007 Patriots- Giants only give up 14pts in SB42
2018 Chiefs- Lose AFC CG in overtime after losing the toss. That's unlucky, but it's why you need your defence.
2011 Packers- Give up 37pts in divisional rd vs Giants. One and done.
Eagles have the best o line in league too. Thats what make the eagles unstoppable
This is not a trend that the bengals started. This is how the nfl works. You get talent at qb then surround that with as many playmakers as you can afford.
W video
we are gonna make the run again
(Off for Burrow is 3-4 bad passes.)
Bengals are the most complete team in the AFC.
I think the thumbnail being “we don’t need Oline” makes a lot more sense than “we don’t need defense”
What about the Raiders, did they not do this trading for Davante?
OLs are paid so damn much right now, that it makes sense that WRs for quick throws are more valuable
Didn't the chiefs in 2018 have one of the worst defenses that year and still made it the AFC championship game?
Yeah they did
The analysis is interesting but beware of over-interpreting from a limited sample size.
What no D, bro they have an underrated defense
My biggest worry as a bengals fan is if the ravens do this with lamar then we're all collectively fucked
As a chief fan when I saw the thumbnail I was pissed if you probably know why
Bungles go brrr
The way this voice says “NFL” is maddening
Jags the next team to do this w the ridley trade and kirk signing
the bengals didnt start the no defense trend. that was the chiefs lmao
Tell that to GB who trades their best recievers🤣🤣
We don't need defense??The defense has won more games than you'd think.
I'm an LSU fan. 2019 LSU's oline won Moore award for best oline. Too be honest they weren't the reason they got that award.....
Miami didn't upgrade the O-line as well in free agency, and because of that he's been riddled with concussions all year.
Tua's to fragile to withstand the hits that Burrow takes. Its like Joe Burrow expects to get sacked.
