    Hi Marcel. I am 63, self taught recreational skater back in the 1970s. I just retired and decided to relearn how to skate .... after 35 years!
    I wanted to take lessons but classes started a few weeks ago so I checked out a few of your videos then subbed.
    You are the real deal. Thanks.

    I was on the rink with my 8yo son two time last week, and he learned to somewhat confidently move on the ice by himself. But he never managed to lift one foot, and therefore he never really strode forward. Gonna show him the chair drill next time. Also, next time I'm brining my 6yo son too and maybe showing it correctly from the start helps him learn it better. Thanks for the advice. It's always hard to teach something that you're doing intuitively.

    Perfect explanation...look at Marcel s heels..perfect move...when recovery leg put on ice ...the legs are heel to heel for a new stride..and his balance are perfect...the new stride cross his axis. The left leg will be on right side of chair and so on...next move ...right leg will be on left side on chair...this is balance

    • @MarcelsHockeySchool
      @MarcelsHockeySchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! However, since this video released, I’ve changed my thinking regarding legs crossing the middle axis: I think it’s good and efficient, but not 100% necessary, as some NHLers are very fast but skate a bit wide legged. So I think, everybody has a little bit different style.

    • @MarcelsHockeySchool

      Don’t worry and don’t get frustrated. I was 26 when I finally learned how to ice skate, but it has been a huge part of my life since then. The best advice I ever got was to get my own skates (they don’t have to be expensive, but they should fit properly and have well-sharpened blades). Rental skates are usually terrible, and even professional skaters can have trouble skating in rentals. Have fun and remember, even the best figure skaters you see on TV were beginners once too!

    Even though this is aimed towards hockey, I think this video can also come in handy for those who want to figure skate as well. Only differences are the equipment used and the skates as hockey skates are smooth and curvy, while figure skates have toe picks and are a bit longer.

    • @MarcelsHockeySchool

    I was told it was better to collapse myself (by bringing myself as low as possible) and fall to the side on my forearms, rather than the hands or elbows.
    It helps a lot, but a hard concept to put into action. I just went and bought elbow and knee pads, and then hockey pants.. lol.. It helped me focus more on skating rather than the fear of falling.

    • @MarcelsHockeySchool

    Thank you so much for this video!!! You're a great teacher. I recently visited some friends for the first time, one of which plays hockey, and we all went to an ice skating rink. I've been on the ice maybe 3-4 times in my life, and I'm much more scared to fall as an adult than a kid, so I immediately backed out as soon as I got on the ice. I wasn't bending my legs at all, which makes sense as to why I felt so wobbly and insecure on the ice.
    Do beginners usually put too much weight on the front or back of hockey skates? I bought a pair of Bauers to force myself to get into skating as a hobby, as it's always been on my bucket list.

    • @MarcelsHockeySchool
      @MarcelsHockeySchool  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Glad I could help! Yeah kids are so much more fearless and it’s easier to learn when you’re young, but you can learn at any age, it just takes some time and work!
      Beginners tend to lean too far back, which is why they fall backward more often, which is more dangerous than falling foreword. You have to lean forward from the hips.

    • @apolloollopa1653
      @apolloollopa1653 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the response and reassurance! I've gone on the ice at my local rink twice so far. First time I stuck with the wall, haha. This time I used the boxy helper things to get a feel for gaining speed and doing correct strides without fear of falling. I've been pretty good about leaning forward thankfully because of your advice, and I've only fallen once thus far. It's exhilarating once you begin to pick up speed and get a feel for the momentum of the strides! I'll be sure to watch many more of your videos. :)@@MarcelsHockeySchool

    My son wants to do hockey the local ice rink offers 4 free lessons for beginner hockey they provide gear. I’m afraid to do the 4 lessons if my kid never been on the ice. Should I pay to take him for public sessions to get him balanced on the ice prior or is that what the lessons teach? They said they teach you have to properly skate for hockey. But idk if that entails someone who never skated ever. If I take him first what techniques should I help my kid do to get his balance on the ice?

    How tight should the skates be around my ankle. I went yesterday and I could fit 2 fingers between my ankle and the skate and my calves were dead 10 minutes in. Should there be no space or is that something I just need to work through over time?

    • @MarcelsHockeySchool

      There shouldn’t really be any space between your ankle and the boot. It should fit snugly.

    May I ask if hockey skates be hard to balance than ice skates ? I see sometimes hockey skates bended inward . Cux for figure skates it is advised to be keeping it straight. Is it the same as hokey skates ? Or bending inward is okay .? Can hockey skate stop with a t-stop (dragging one foot out to stop)

    • @MarcelsHockeySchool
      @MarcelsHockeySchool  ปีที่แล้ว

      No they should be the same. Hockey skates should not bend inward; if they do, they are usually too big or not tight enough. Yes you can T-stop in hockey skates
