    This is my first year doing DECA and I'm really nervous! I don't really know anyone there and I signed up for a written event and have absolutely no clue where to start. Im doing the community awareness event but i'm not sure where to go with it. Do you have any advice for this?

    • @JuliaWezio
      @JuliaWezio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Harika! I haven't actually done a community awareness event myself but I have friends who have done it and placed at Internationals! If you have a DECA advisor, I'd start by talking to them but if not, you should definitely read, read, read previous events. A google search of "deca community awareness event sample" should link you to a ton that have done well in the past. Take notes on what you like about the paper and try to translate those into your own event!

    Hi! I'm new to DECA this year and I just have a couple of questions.
    1. Is it possible to participate in a written event and a role-play event?
    2. Do written events take place at district, state, and national levels or just one out of those three?
    3. At district competitions, do we just take the 100 questions exam and then have only 1 role-play event or can there possibly be more than one role-play event?

    • @JuliaWezio
      @JuliaWezio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. It depends on your state! Some allow it, some do not. Your advisor would probably know who to talk to for that :)
      2. They take place at all levels (district, state, and national)!
      3. You usually will take the 100 question exam before districts from what I remember and then you compete in your selected event. However, if your state allows for more than 1 event, you would take as many tests and competitions as you need
      hope that helped!

    Hi, this is so helpful thank you! Can you also make a video about what to wear to DECA competitions? This is my first year in DECA and I was wondering how to make an efficient place mat [for written events]. I am not sure if you guys make them at other states, but do you have any tips for that if you are aware of it? Thanks!

    • @JuliaWezio
      @JuliaWezio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, that's the first time I've heard of a placemat! Can you explain what you mean? Maybe link a picture or so? I usually use a trifold for my presentations when I compete in Writtens. I'm sure I have some advice that would apply, just want to make sure I understand your question correctly

    • @JuliaWezio
      @JuliaWezio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also yes! I love fashion videos so I will definitely plan one in the new year for competition outfits

    • @faizaimran1167
      @faizaimran1167 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JuliaWezio Our advisor told us that it is beneficial to create a place-mat which summarizes any written presentation. It shows key points for each of the sections and you bring it in during your presentation and hand it to the judge. If you don't have any advice for that it is okay. I need a little more advice with the tri-fold poster. I am not sure what to display on it, because I am also making a power point presentation. If you can give me advice on my power point presentation and my tri-fold that would be awesome. Thanks!

      Yara Alameddine I don’t know a lot about that event but for marketing events, use as much storytelling and facts as you can! These make your pitch a lot more convincing in the long run

    Are written events easier to place in than roleplays?

    • @JuliaWezio
      @JuliaWezio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it kind of depends on your skill set! If you are more comfortable with presenting on the fly, then roleplays are usually easier but if you are good at planning - I would recommend written events!

    how does one start a collegiate DECA chapter?

    • @JuliaWezio
      @JuliaWezio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      YES!!! Starting a DECA chapter is the best experience ever. I'd recommend calling DECA Inc. and checking out the deca.org website since they have tons of resources and packets for getting a new chapter organized. What state are you from?

      membership.decaregistration.com/deca# You can also click the link here where it says "first time chapter" to join! If you don't have other students from your school who want to compete with you either, you can always register as an individual member

    DECA is so rigged our presentation was really good and we lost out because our judge was strict and the other judge for the event graded easy

    • @JuliaWezio
      @JuliaWezio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't necessarily say DECA is rigged. I've had TONS of judges and didn't advance to Internationals two years in a row because we had biased judges or ones that graded much harder than others. Unfortunately, it's really hard to standardize the judges because everyone has their own personal bias and things they like to see in a presentation. I'm sure you guys did great either way and I encourage you to keep competing!

    • @serenad5782
      @serenad5782 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ThereGoesInfinity Yeah I know what you mean but you got to understand how frustrating it is to work so hard all year and have people who didn’t put in nearly the same amount of effort advance because of a bias judge

    • @JuliaWezio
      @JuliaWezio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I completely understand. I didn't make it to ICDC twice because of the same thing. My partner and I actually got one of the highest scores out of anyone in our school and STILL the judge's bias meant she scored other people in our section higher. I was really angry about it.
      You really never know who you're going to get when you walk into the room which is something I love/hate about DECA. In the real world, you'd know who you are presenting to and what their dislikes/likes are. I would definitely just chat with your advisor and see if she can register you to be a state voting delegate or attend an ICDC academy. These are great ways to get the full conference experience if you get a biased judge at State

    • @JuliaWezio
      @JuliaWezio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But keep your head up :) I am sure you killed it and that's ultimately going to be the experience that helps you win with a better judge next year
