I analysed this song in a paper I wrote about hip-hop. maybe it can help. “Became” uses an elaborate metaphor to describe a close friend’s journey down a dark path. In attempt to display the metaphor and the feelings that it portrays I must first summarize the song. It begins with Slug, Atmosphere’s emcee, waking up on a wintery camping trip. After waiting for his friend to wake up, Slug goes into the friend’s tent to wake him up, but finds he’s is gone. He then goes into the woods in search of his friend. Wolf tracks soon then appear following his friend, and shortly after another wolf’s tracks appear. Realizing the wolves could overtake him; he furiously sprints off of the path, after his friend. That’s when he sees that his friend’s tracks disappear, and a third set of wolf prints appear. The song metaphorically explains the slow process of drug addiction and how he tried helping his close friend experiencing it, but could only watch as it progressed. Slug, waiting for his friend to wake up, represents his attempted guidance and patience while he waited for his friend to come to his senses. The tent and the personal possessions left abandoned by the friend in the song symbolize all of the loved ones and the potential that the friend left behind, and ended up losing. Slug, searching the woods for his friend, represents his continued and persistent attempt to get his friend the help that he needed, although the friend kept straying farther away. The wolves, waiting in the woods for people to make themselves vulnerable, represent drug addiction growing stronger and harder to overcome. At the end of the song his friend transforms into a wolf. This represents the friend losing himself to his addiction, and drugs controlling every aspect of life. Slug lost his close friend who has now taken on a new, detached life. After his friend’s transition, the song concludeswith Slug in disbelief of his friend’s transition into addiction. He shows that his friend, by choice, put up no fight to stop his addiction. Then, once the addiction took hold, his friend was gone.
