  • Is petrol dead? Electric motors from 7.5Kw up to 35Kw from a well established marine brand. It's taken a while but finally Mercury have gone electric. Powering everything from dinghies up to decent sized boats the Avator's can be used with or without tiller and are compatible with external throttles. The 7.5Kw comes with a removable internal battery and the rest with a modular battery system. Whats not to like? Let us know in the comments!

      It’s take a while, right?

It's not an engine. It's a motor. Slight difference.

Yes it’s transforming electrical energy rather than converting fuels but in the U.K. motor and engine is used interchangeably. I blame the Oxford dictionary: “The Oxford English Dictionary defines “motor” as a machine that supplies motive power for a vehicle or other device with moving parts. Similarly, it tells us that an engine is a machine with moving parts that converts power into motion…

Is that Chris on minute 1:54 or are they just using the same cloths? 😅

He stole my look, it’s quite common to be honest.

For sure, it’s a smart package! Unfortunately we have a new 2 stroke from 2012 so I don’t think we can find the excuse (or the cash!)

A Mercury 9.9MH runs about $2800 in the US. The Avator 35e, when I could find one, goes for about $5,000usd. Considering the limited performance of the electric motors, and the fact that I can buy two traditional motors for nearly the same cost as the 35e, I would have a hard time making the switch. If you add in all the minerals that need to be mined for the battery, which are collected by diesel guzzling machines, it is hard to get on board with this technology.

Yup, we agree. Especially when we look at the batteries and how they are charged. Usually a generator or alternator.
Still, if the industry is going to move forward we need to look at new alternatives and how to mine the materials in a better way. Sadly, we’re not the people to do that, we just highlight what’s new in the sailing world!

@SailHub I think those electric outboards are great for a dinghy that runs from the yacht club to a boat on the mooring ball. I just don't think they make much sense for a full-time cruiser. I love seeing this new tech, please keep the videos coming!

      Thanks Tim!
We agree, I love them for their portability, ease of use and lack of maintenance but we have a 15hp… Just for beating agains the waves and tide when we need it.

Everything you said is spot on and correct.
Will say that this is not the same as the transition from 2 stroke to 4 stroke. The battery pack size and weight does not have the energy density of petroleum at least not yet or our lifetime
Will say I do see a small market for EV outboards on smaller lite tin boats and specially for those waters that are electric only as they are drinking water.
I'm converting an old Evinrude 7.5 to EV with a 2kw motor and is cheaper than what mercury sells at moment

@omieyouknowme the ev conversion sounds fab, can we follow it?
Yeah, I agree, electric has a place but it’s not a replacement.
