Showing in this video that there were a total of (in the moment i’m making this comment) 19 banned Pokémon from OU in gen 9 just shows how the power creep has increased so much in this generation, even some old mons that in other generations were allowed in OU had been banned in this gen because of also the new gimmick of tera, just like volcarona that got banned one time, returned to OU and got banned again.
Even with all these bans, there are still many troublesome pkmn running around in the tier like kyurem (which is getting suspected now) and zamazenta as well as the controversial kingambit, ogerpon w, roaring moon, darkrai and gliscor
I can just imagine that as soon as Gen 10 come by, if it is even halfway decent in that the gimmick is not as subtly dominating as Tera that we are tricked into taking what is actually a meta-ruinous ability such that the gimmick can be taken or summarily banned like Dynamax, no one will play Gen 9 metas ever again.
If Tera was never allowed this 17 minute video would be a TH-cam short. I feel like if the source of limiting what Pokémon you can use in the name of a mechanic that can make any Pokémon uncompetitive due to making those Pokémon too diverse in sets and different counters, then I think a single ban on Tera would be more beneficial then banning so many mons that can check the king gambit and great tusk centric meta game. And king gambit would finally have to confront that quad fighting weakness instead of removing it in the end game to win.
@@GMan-yg9du that’s fair because ur right it is just some 5 year old at game freak making cool number combinations. But I feel like Tera exacerbates these broken monsters.

Tapu Koko is one of my favorite pokemon but thank god it wasn’t let loose in OU. The future paradox mons would be much more broken if they didn’t have to rely on pincurchin to set up electric terrain
Pretty sure the OU council very much wanted some kind of action on Tera, but felt that doing so without community support was a bad idea. When they held the poll, no action won out.
Don't even start to act like terastalization broke these mons lmao, in around 85% of situations where any of these pokemon would sweep, they didn't need tera. And in a remaining 10% of those situations, it would be better to set up a clean with your remaining pokemon using tera. The only possible argument you can make is for gimmick pokemon like espathra. And even then, it had all the tools it needed without tera lol. Speed boost, calm mind, all in a shed tail meta is what made espathra broken. Much like blaziken
Community votes have literally always put tera over keeping mons. Go make your voice heard because hundreds of minority opinions need to if you want a vote
The large number of bans seems to be tied to Tera as a mechanic. While stuff like Fluttermane is obviously too strong, Pokemon like Gouging Fire could be handled without Tera. That’s not to say Tera needs to be banned, but keeping it has obvious costs.
Also, banning it isn't the only possible action. Open Tera Types would at least greatly alleviate the problems caused by Tera guessing games, though it wouldn't fix matchup-fishing related issues.
To be fair, its ability being nerfed does nothing to negate the fact that it’s the fastest Pokemon in the game, has great attacking stats, and can easily spam boltbeam with barely any risk or drawbacks outside of having to be an ice type. Gen 8 Eleki was a very interestingly designed mon, being an absolute powerhouse and speed demon with a common glaring weakness, but Terastallization basically threw that out the window.
This generation is bizarre and marked by how many Pokémon can use 1 turn to become an unstoppable sweeper. It would likely be much more manageable without Tera or if Tera types were at least visible on team preview. Tera is a CONSTANT 50/50 mind game that could easily lose you (or win you) the game.

I support smogon’s tiering and I think competitively-speaking it’s definitely the best for pokemon. But, while suspect tests and councils voting on quickbans are generally fair and reasonable, there are certain situations where they accomplish nothing. Gouging Fire getting suspect tested twice in such a small period of time with no actual big changes in the metagame (such as DLC’s or any new pokémon) shows how the tiers are basically manipulated by the same people. I was there for both suspect tests and this pokemon was literally the same in both. It was a threat for every playstyle and it restricted team building kinda the same way (although not as blatantly obvious) as Volcarona. It was unhealthy upon release, all the way until it was finally banned. It’s the kind of pokemon that can sweep your entire team with little prediction. It doesn’t make any sense that it dodged the ban on the first suspect test but got a supermajority ban on the second one. Literally nothing changed between the two suspect tests besides the way players were using it. It should have been banned the first time but because the top OU players at the time of reqs were not abusing it as much, it did not. Pretty unfair for the rest of the players if you ask me.

I always find it so funny when videos from the SW/SH era talking about how garbage Zamazenta was (which it obviously was at the time) but just seeing how strong it is now especially in comparison to Zacian is just hilarious.
Tera has the worst coolness to brokenness ratio out of any main mechanic. Megas had a pretty close 1:1 ratio, Z-moves also had a 1:1 ratio (lower for both) and Dynamax had a 1:4 ratio (it was four times as broken as it is cool). Tera IMO has like a 1:5 or 1:6. (Granted, the only thing saving Dynamax is Gigantamax.)
After watching this video, I come to understand that Tera is not a good mechanic. Most of the mobs are banned because Tera made them nearly impossible to counter or check. I have to build a team that deals with Tera water volc. Then I play with someone that has Tera grass instead and I still lose to volc. That is not a healthy metagame

Hot take: Zama crowned shouldn't have been banned. It was just as good as normal Zama and in fact had much more weaknesses (ground, fire, and fighting itself), he is also noticeable slower. Even in the video you see it barely surviving luna's headlong rush (although being fair, it was luna).

annihilape shouldnt have been banned, they should have just banned rage fist like they did with last respects beacause he is a good pokemon but far from broken without this move.
The problem is rage fist in of itself isn't broken- if many pokemon had rage fist and were broken because of it, then they'd ban rage fist, but two different pokemon have rage fist: primeape and annihilape, and only annihilape is broken. So they can't ban it.
Because it actually has decent counters and well put together teams can almost always answer it lmao That’s why it was banned in Monotype, when your teambuilding options are limited to a single type, and Gambit has amazing support mons in both Steel and Dark (Ting-lu and Klefki come to mind), it’s a lot harder to counter and it ended up centralizing teambuilding for both Dark and Steel types. Whereas in OU it can easily be hard-walled by a variety of common types depending on the set.
Somestimes it's still necessary lol. To put it in perspective just how broken Flutter Mane was, it had the highest usage rate for the entire first MONTH of SV OU even though it was banned in only two days.
Booster Energy or Protosynthesis/quark drive is a broken concept The fact that you get scarf boost on your speed without being choice locked is BS and you get a free life orb boost on your offenses isn't fair There should be a major drawback for these boosts
Bunch of these Pokémon aren’t even threats without Tera. Thought players learnt their lesson last gen. Tera is a terrible mechanic in 1v1 and people defending it is why I haven’t bothered with playing this gen. At least this has given me more time to enjoy other games
Annilape would be fine without rage fist in my opinion. But we can't ban rage fist unless its broken on primeape for some reason? I don't understand why they can't just complex ban certain over tuned moves. If someone knows why they don't I'd love to know!
The idea is that if we allow the banning of moves on mons you could technically allow anything. Spectrier without shadow ball or nasty plot is probably not that unmanageable. Maybe zekrom without bolt strike is OK. Of course people could say these ones are silly, but the council wants one simple rule to dictate everything rather than lots of little rules for specific situations.
They don't because of the reason you stated: it's not broken on primeape, though I agree without rage fist annihilape would probably not be OU. However complex banning something like that would open a can of worms.
@@rozepanter007 Thank you! I never really thought about the fact that you'd then have to look at every moveset. The Ape situation is so obvious that I didn't think about how that would apply to other mons.

With 19 bans and another 2 probably on the way, you have to wonder what’s the point? 21 bans is huge and kinda defeats the point of banning Pokemon. If you have one or two pokemon that warp the meta game that’s a problem, but 21 pokemon is enough to make a whole other tier. Release them all into OU and see what happens. My guess is a lot of them will check each other & it’ll just be a really high power level OU
They already tried that in Freedom Cup. The meta was nothing but Hyper Offense with the brokens and Stall to counter the brokens. When you have overwhelmingly offensive pokemon legal in a meta, everything on the teambuilding spectrum that's between HO and Stall gets drastically worse and you're left with no variety.

I remember when all ban pokemon used to have a niche in Ubers and they where genuinely good, but now the whole meta is so centralized thanks to home legends being unleashed and DLC additions, some still have a niche but most are dog water
No....just...no Espathra has 0 mons to wall it as stored power can overwhelm blissey and tera fighting beats out most if not all dark types. Baxcalibur still has the exact same problems, it has like 5 different sets with different tera types, no way can it be let back into ou.

(When only a few old gen pokemon were able to keep pace, Like Incineroar and a few others- who can keep up with modern pokemon)
At some point, they're gonna have to address Tera somehow, either by banning it completely or imposing restrictions. A fair amount of the mons mentioned go from super powerful to outright broken just bc of the mechanic.
I honestly don't understand why Smogon bans Pokemon from OU before banning obviously broken and very-limited-distribution moves. It wouldn't be the same as banning Belly Drum just because Slurpuff absolutely wrecked the lower tiers in Gen 8 with its Belly Drum + Sitrus Berry + Unburden set, because MANY Pokemon have access to Belly Drum. In the case of Gen 9, Last Respects is what pushed Basculegion and Houndstone into broken territory, while Raging Fist did the same for Annihilape. They were too much for OU BECAUSE of their access to those moves, along with their traits being just good enough to make full use of them. Please, Smogon veterans, enlighten me as to why the Council bans Pokemon before banning moves.
Because casual players cry and leave the scene when building a team and getting a move banned. Complex bans are strictly better for the competitive nature but they have chosen to try not to use them since gen5 as it killed the player base since most are casual. Hope this helped
Smogon tries to avoid complex bans, that is why. There are many reasons why they don't like complex bans, but one of them is that if you do this for every single Mon, you have an incredibly complicated ruleset. Far more mons are only ban able because of a specific move than you think, that list would be endless
@@otozinclus3593 We're not talking about banning moves with 50+ Pokemon that can learn them - we're talking about moves that are exclusive to _one or two individual evolution lines._ Last Respects is exclusive to Basculegion and Houndstone, while Rage Fist is exclusive to Primeape and Annihilape. Granted, Rage Fist hasn't lifted Primeape out of ZU, but the point stands. Also, look at Baton Pass. When you can build a team that focuses on facilitating the use of ONE move to essentially run away with the game unless your team is specifically built to counter it, it's not the Pokemon that's the problem - it's the move. But Smogon did a crazy song and dance by placing tighter and tighter restrictions on the move in a failed attempt to neuter it rather than doing the _simple thing_ and essentially banning the move outright by banning it from being used alongside boosting moves.

Tons of ice and dragons on the ban list as well as fighting types
It would be funny if every single Ice/Dragon gets banned because of their ability to stop being Ice/Dragon with tera
The fact that I see Baxcalibur as Godzilla. This makes it so ironic since both are overpowered.
I can just imagine that as soon as Gen 10 come by, if it is even halfway decent in that the gimmick is not as subtly dominating as Tera that we are tricked into taking what is actually a meta-ruinous ability such that the gimmick can be taken or summarily banned like Dynamax, no one will play Gen 9 metas ever again.
megas should come back, at least they costed an item slot and werent unpredictable
I dont even think tera makes a difference atp. These pokemon were made with no regard for interesting balance or gameplay.
@@GMan-yg9du that’s fair because ur right it is just some 5 year old at game freak making cool number combinations. But I feel like Tera exacerbates these broken monsters.

Fuck man. I can’t wait for that mechanic to be gone; I can’t wait to not look stupid for knowing what the type chart is ;-;
Tapu Koko is one of my favorite pokemon but thank god it wasn’t let loose in OU. The future paradox mons would be much more broken if they didn’t have to rely on pincurchin to set up electric terrain
Imagine a special attack/speed boosted specs iron val due to electric terrain
Hey it's like there's a central mechanic that makes these Pokémon overpowered! I wonder what it is though?
Hmmmm, it's hard to tell. Give them a few years or so and they might discover what that is and address it.
Smogon refuses to ban the central mechanic just because they had to ban one already. Wich i think is a very stupid reason.
The large number of bans seems to be tied to Tera as a mechanic. While stuff like Fluttermane is obviously too strong, Pokemon like Gouging Fire could be handled without Tera.
That’s not to say Tera needs to be banned, but keeping it has obvious costs.
A lot of pkmn are solely banned because of tera and it only makes great pkmn even stronger
Also, banning it isn't the only possible action. Open Tera Types would at least greatly alleviate the problems caused by Tera guessing games, though it wouldn't fix matchup-fishing related issues.
We missed the chance of banning tera in DLC1. Now we pay for it
Regieleki being banned before they even knew its ability was nerfed will never not be funny to me. They didn't even try to wait a little.
Reshiram getting outclassed again by another legendary is just sad. Yes I'm counting the paradox legendaries as legendaries.
Let's see if Palafin and Annihilape will come back down .

Ngl, after banning a few thing like wellspring and kyurem, i'd be dowm to retest crowned-zamazenta. No item slot means it tanks knock off better, while the steel typing being good still has some decent drawbacks. Kinda hoping this gets tested before palafin ngl
This is why fans should never decide rules. Imagine if american footballs rules were decided by fans.

That’s why it was banned in Monotype, when your teambuilding options are limited to a single type, and Gambit has amazing support mons in both Steel and Dark (Ting-lu and Klefki come to mind), it’s a lot harder to counter and it ended up centralizing teambuilding for both Dark and Steel types.

@@Snagavitch That's understandable, at least more so than the guy who replied after you.

Sneasler not super busted counter ruins this thing any physical tank ruins this thing life. Finally Finally Minimize too strong got to ban it turns the game to who luckier than who is the better player strong counter to minimize ohko moves and moves like Kingambit signature move that ignores accuracy. And finally Ohko got to ban it turns the game to who is luckier than who is the better player sash Pokémon counters ohko moves sub counters ohko moves too. If you losing to something it’s your fault not the thing you’re losing too adapt. TF is Smogon guys ?
Writing all this just to peak 1100 elo
At least someone talks sense here. You play bss? Sounds like you have lots of experience.
Paradox pokemon are broken in general
i guess it makes sense since they're like obtainable at the end of the game lul
Smogon is a joke. Half of these pokemon should have been re tested already as well with all the dlc pokemon being added
Too many z moves, ultra, mega... whatever you want to add it's starting to look like yugioh atm.
Git gud smogon pepz
post your ou elo
@@waves9515im 1727 on masterball tier in the official games. I can definitely say smogon is bs.
@@waves9515 lol hard opponent = ban lol pathetic
@@blazechaos212 you didn't post your elo. here, i'll start. i'm at 1712 rn. yours?

Paradox pokemon and terrastrialization are the dumbest things added to pokemon since ultra beasts and dynamax
Horrible, horrible take.

I think the problem is that the “council” who do these are too afraid to see their favorites be stepped off their OU placement. A Banlist should never ever be the answer for balance
Theyre literally doing the blizzard thing where they only listen to the top 1% of players and alienating everyone else
They banned sleep entirely ffs
@@devonchafe2764pathetic really is. This is why i only play 3v3 singles on the official games against people in japan. Ill play 6v6 when gamefreak makes ranked 6v6
Well it would just become a game of did I win the speed tie between our flutter manes no well gg
@@Straven93 Do you not know how to use an assault vest? Lol. Physical attacker not weak to fluttermanes stabs with assault vest. Problem solved. Tera? If fluttermane literally teras into anything but ghost you can nuke it with extreme speed.
Dumbass mf
It’s not the “council” that bans, is the player base
