2020 Zero S | No License No Problem in Europe

  • More torque than any other middleweight naked, yet you do NOT need a full motorcycle license to ride it, in Europe. It all comes down to how they rate electric motors, it's continuous out-put over 30 minutes and that is how they come up with the 11kW of power (14.75hp) when actually the peek is 44 kW (59hp) and 109Nm (80ft-lbs) of torque.

    I love Zeros. They are great city bikes. I live in the city. Light, flickable. Tons of torque. You wake up with a full tank every morning. If you have one of these in the garage parked beside a gas bike, you will take the Zero out 80% of the time. These bikes are a blast to ride. They aren't too expensive when you factor in maintenance and insurance. It's not all about range. I could ride for days on a charge for one of these bikes. They also come with traction control now. In the states you get tax credits with the purchase so you can save a few thousand.

      Then go to the Netherlands. And suddenly you have to pay 23000.00 Euro for this bike. Our government does not support electric. Because 80 percent of the petrolprice goes to the state overhere. It is simple economics. And with the worldwide tyrannical climate dictatorship coming up it will get even much more expensive. So no chance on using these Zero bikes for cummuting to work because a simple petrolbike is way cheaper. If i would buy f.e. a CRF 300 l or Rally it is a third of the price. For 15000.00 euro i could tank for 10 years and pay taxes and insurance.
      And it gives much more freedom to ride in a weekend a much more longer trip. And yes, this is not Zero's fault.
      In a few years there will be a new batterry system. That costs a third of that of lithium. Will charge way faster and with the same weight it will give you at least 500 km in one single charge. For now, leave Zero alone and buy one over 3 years.
      Zero should announce of the bike will be made backwards compatible to the new upcoming batterie technology. Otherwise you will have an incredible expensive piece of junk in your garage. Because nobody wants to buy them secondhand. Everybody will opt for the new batteries. I know that i wil do that. Because i have to work for my money and i live under a shitty governmental regime to regards of cars and motorcycles.Taxes and BPM is criminal overhere.

    I hate the thin brake disc attached strait on the wheel! Is that a cost savings thing? Narrow tyres, cheap brakes, budget dash, halogen headlight. No TC it's like a 15 year old 125 when it comes to spec/tech and at the price of an R1

    I've had a few of those "sphincter clinchers" since i started riding 4 months ago on my Scout 60 :D.
    I dont know about electric bikes.. I follow a youtuber (Walterrific) that has an electric bike as well now. Some times during recording he had to go find a plug or he wouldnt get home!
    Gas bikes is just get to a gas station, refuel and you are on your way again.. Even with those options you mention, you still have to charge maybe half an hour depends how far you are from home to get home. And you dont always find a spot to recharge. It will become easier in the future with more recharge points maybe but still..
    I do see benefits for it maybe if you use it for closer range work travel, if you are able to charge it at your work.
    Great vid Scott. Bummer about the rain !

    I hope Zero will come out with updated battery tech next year to add more kWh and faster charging. Overall the S has too many compromises with a cheap look and budget components. Right now the only electric that seems interesting to me is the Damon Hypersport, but we'll have to wait and see if they can actually get it into production and if the specs are real or just hype.

    These bikes badly need CSS charging to compete. Very poor charging times.
    The price is a bit too much for what you get. This bike with the torque, no TC and the fact you don't even need a full license is a good way to get beginner people hurt. Of course, on the flip side, I doubt many people would be getting this expensive a bike as a "learner" bike. I'm not sure if you can get those in Germany but the other license-free EV bikes seem a bit more sensible (ie Horwin, Niu, Super Soco), those seem a lot better for commuting in an "ecological" way.
    The ZERO bikes are an effort to get out "premium" performance EV bikes but a bit lacking imo. Nice to see you give this a try.
    Cheers

    Good review. Range is not a problem in my view comparing to like MT-10. But price :D - makes me laugh really. For this modest version without fireworks, like fast charger I understand it is still 12 gran €. In Poland easily getting MT09, 09SP, Duke 790, 890. Better range, all of them with TC, ABS, engine maps and shorter "charging" time as you spend like 5 mins at the fuel station. If we start to talk of 18 gran then it is almost price of a new R1. Well... nothing to compare. I got a feeling these engines are future. But same time long time until I'll seriously consider any of them. As usual - good review 👍

    It's a shed load of coin for a 125cc equivalent. You proved the reason for TC, it's never used normally, but it's there for cold tyres, wet roads, etc, same for ABS. But TC would be very easy to add as there's no engine, fuel injection etc, just drive control to a motor.

It's similar to the price and value of electric cars - if something is electric, it's immediately costing 2 times more than the gasoline equivalent. If the price of this bike would be reduced by 50%, it could just become one option of many bikes. Currently it's a no option.

    You don’t think the Ducati Monster, the bike that invented the middle weight naked class in that group?

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I also didn't mention Aprilia Shiver, Moto Guzzi V7 and a few others too, for several reasons but mainly because they don't sell the volume of the main OEM's. Ducati sell about 45,000 units a year, for all their models, Monster, Scrambler, Multistrada, Sport...etc. Actually it's predicted that they will only sell 42,000 bikes in 2020 and even less in 2021, they are currently "down-sizing" even though they have expanded into what they call "premium countries". BMW sell 58,000 units of just the 1250GS per year, now that gives you an idea of just how little Ducati is in comparison. Not nocking them just have to draw the line somewhere, or the list can go on and on...not even including some of the Indian/Asian OEM's.
      Bottom line is Ducati with their current business strategy & reliability & maintenance costs, they will always be the small "boutique / niche" OEM that they are today and always have been. Kind of like Ferrari in the car world, they make great race cars but you don't buy one for the road unless you have lots of spare coin and I mean a lot.
      I like them and if I could afford a 4th or 5th bike, I'd get the 2011 Monster 1100evo, the last of the air cooled big Monsters.

    • @finemanm
      @finemanm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I see where you’re coming from when you compare the sales of BMW or the more affordable Japanese bikes, but I see the Monster 821 a direct competitor to the Street Triple, and the volume sales between Triumph and Ducati are quite close. If I was considering a 12,000ish bike, I wouldn’t be looking Yamaha... I’d be shopping between the BMW, the Triumph, the Ducati and the KTM. Maybe I’m a europhile snob.

    If an experienced rider like yourself has trouble with this bike, and yes I heard you saying the tyres (as well as the bike) were basically new, I don't want to imagine what would happen to someone without your experience and knowledge. I mean, when they buy it, the bike will be new too.

Everything on this bike looks kinda skimpy. That little drive belt, That wee rear tire, those weak brakes... Yes I realize it's on the lighter side but I don't care, for that kind of money I expect better. Just all the way around, I expect better. Aesthetically, it does nothing for me either. It's just very bland. Twist and go? That is scooter stuff. Definitely not my style! I dunno, man. Personally I would not consider this bike. It may be fine for some, but I prefer my GSX and I make no apologies for that! The whole "green" argument... we won't even go there! That has been done to death. We'll leave it at the bike itself. It's OK. Definitely not worth the asking price, and simply not what I need in a motorcycle.

    The price/value ratio is as questionable as the range/usefulness of charging at this time in the evolution of electric bikes. For what it is, it looks like a good bike. With a new rider being the target, it's interesting that torque like that isn't controlled by traction control as a safety option. Almost high siding can induce puckering. Interesting times.

    Very comprehensive review. Not the bike for me, poor range, mega expensive, even the fast tank charging is slow, oh and its very basic for the price. At about £6,000 it would make a good commuter. Its the start of the electic revolution, but it has a very long way to go 👍

    That looks and sounds dreadful. Sorry, I’d rather buy a mountain bike. This doesn’t even have the potential to grow on me. I hate it.

    Good review. You very nearly high-sided that incredibly expensive bike! Got away with it, by the skin of your teeth. Who but a fool with more money than sense would buy this ludicrously expensive machine? This is a classic illustration as to why electric vehicles are simply not viable. The price will have to come down enormously, and battery charging time will also have to plummet. And the absence of TC makes this bike lethal.

      That's why you buy used. I found a 2018 S, worth 600 miles on it, for $7000. And the battery is still under warranty, AND it's transferable.

      Oh, and it has the upgraded battery as well.

    18k for electric scooter? I'll pass, as the most people with more brain than money.
