  • One year ago I bought my step van. I have learned a HUGE amount over that time.

    This is awesome! I used to drive a hot food truck like that and always said it would make for a great stealth rv! I love the repurposed cedar fence and pallets on the walls! I’ve suggested to a few other Bus builders look at habitat for humanity restore stores they have building materials pulled from homes and businesses. Like kitchen cabinets, plumbing, appliances... Might find some great items that you could use on some of the future things you plan on finishing in your step van build.
    So glad I found your vlogs!

    • @SevenWanderstheWorld

      I try to hit the habitat stores as I pass thru larger cities and often find a few gems I can use in my build. thx for the comment and finding my channel!

      half of my desire with the the step van was to learn new skills with building and mechanics. the other part was to create something customized for my height and needs

    As you get more comfortable with projects I had an idea for how to have your bed where it is and still be able to use the back doors to load large items. On ether side of the door opening create a frame that would stay in place then a bridge between held in place by 4 bolts so you can shift the mattress to a van wall and undo the 4 bolts to then lift the bridge section out giving you full door access. The inside access doors to the space would attach to the permanent sections so just fold open to be out of the way.
    Can make out of wood or if you get access to a welder from steel to save space.
    Looking at how packed that garage is getting I have 2 more suggestions on items to fill it even more. a 10x10 collapsible canopy both for a shady spot and for keeping a spot dry in the rain. Reason for this is the sun and rain are the 2 things that can ruin time outside so a shelter that you can push up to the van or setup away from it can be useful. Second item would be a self supporting hammock to give you a place to relax when the weather is good but you don't have 2 trees or posts near enough to use.
    The 10x10 canopy should be just large enough to be able to cover the engine area if you have to work on it in the rain or setup next to a wheel for shade/rain as you work.

    • @SevenWanderstheWorld
      @SevenWanderstheWorld  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      would the bed you describe be a bit like a draw bridge over a river, breaking in the middle with two sides pivoting upward and back toward the walls?

    • @TheUserid82
      @TheUserid82 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ever see one of the RV kitchen table/bed setups? The 2 bench seats stay in place and the table is dropped to between to bridge the gap for a bed to set on top of.
      th-cam.com/video/vl3JLXY0BUU/w-d-xo.html
      No need for complexity and as it will be a bed 99% of the time no need to have it for a fast conversion as it will only be removed that 1% of the time you need to load/unload a larger/longer object then can be loaded from the front doors. You want it to be strong as it will flex as the van moves so overbuilding is a good thing with it.

    This looks great! I’ve just found your channel and am watching just a few videos to see what you’ve done with your step van. I’m considering getting one, so I’m trying to find out what’s involved in a conversion - including general cost guidelines.
    I’ll wait to ask the questions I’ve got for you until I see your later videos with it more completed.
    Great job so far here, though! I especially love that you’ve got a desk - and books!
    Books and clothing - and metalsmithing tools and beads - the big things I’m trying to figure out how to take (as much as possible) along, plus some of my artwork, which is a big part of why I like the idea of a step van - straight walls! And fitting in my power wheelchair.

    Love you dude! Thank you so much for editing the flickering out of your intro. You said you understood, you said you would, and you did. Pretty damn cool. That's engagement. Oh! I'm surprised. You talked about all of the things you have done to combat the squeaking and pulling but didn't say if the latest iteration, the right front caliper replacement made the problem go away or no. I'm guessing 62% yes, 38% no. Only you can answer. In one video recently you implied that maybe it was not efficacious, but never came out and said it. (Audio from lavalieres applied to the right and left would isolate the sides if the temperature didn't.)
    Anyway, so proud of you.

    • @SevenWanderstheWorld
      @SevenWanderstheWorld  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      actually I haven't said because I don't know. I haven't driven the step van longer that 15mins which is not long enough to test it (needs to be longer that 45 mins) and also need a flat road way with zero wind to test for pulling directions. planning on leaving fresno on sunday and driving 3 hrs. will know for sure then!

    A year already!?! Thanks for sharing your build. I like the build quality of a stepvan over a motorhome, I think they are much safer in accidents. I still like my idea of putting a u-shaped couch against the driver's area... Spanning the width of the stepvan. White Leather... fully padded of course. The only thing stopping me with a stepvan is 4 wheel drive. Motorhomes and step vans get stuck easily! How about a dual dually, 4 wheel drive? Ha! (Waves). JamesAdam

    Hard to believe a year has passed - congratulations on everything you’ve achieved! Your home is looking more and more comfy with each project you complete. :)
    I’m curious - what is your long-term travel plan? What little I know about your background is that you have done a lot of traveling all over the globe. Is the van being used for a period of travel devoted to North America (maybe also Central/South America?) and then do you intend to move on to a different travel mode in another area of the world?

    • @SevenWanderstheWorld
      @SevenWanderstheWorld  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      long term I'm doing a world tour of 200+ countries. I've been to 52 countries so far and hope to ad a dozen or more each year. I'll be living in the step van 2 to 6 months each year as I travel from continent to continent while in NA (I use busses and trains outside the USA)

    Get a shop manuel from freightliner and chassis buildrr... Many parts are based on vin numbers. Find a fed ex mechanic or ups or any other step van mechanic... They will be able to source generic parts. You said guy has four units for storage. If you can buy your old unit store at his place for pick a part and storage.
