It's amazing how much society has evolved...even journalism. This segment makes so many ignorant remarks by ABC news "gay agenda" and just the general tone of her being gay is made into such a huge deal...yet today being gay is no big thing at all, and most of humanity has progressed to accept gay people as everyone else. Humanity always prevails. Love Ellen.
It’s so true. I was thinking the same thing. Most of humanity has progressed to accept AND LOVE gay people EVERYWHERE. And I love your thought HUMANITY WILL ALWAYS PREVAIL. Yes! I have so much love and respect for Ellen.
ellen was so sad... that's horrible :/ she's such an inspiration for me. I mean I was 4 when she came out and 16 years later her sitcom has an impact on my life. She's such an amazing person !
I can tell you all that in 98 after Ellen came out the year before people in Hollywood and on ABC were being too over dramatic! Because of the way they treated her and Anne Heche the two of them retreated to a ranch in Wyoming till things settled down. It breaks my heart to this day what poor Ellen went thru. She was just trying to help people and make those that are gay comfortable in their own skin. I'm so happy that shes well loved by everyone and she just wants people to accept her for who she really is. She also wants to help those that are suffering in the world with an illness or money issues. Like her words what she says at the end of her show everyday "Be kind to one another"
this literally just makes me wanna hug ellen, i hate seeing her feel so bombarded, attacked, and judged. thank god todays society is much more accepting and everyone i know loves ellen
this was only 15 years ago, things change alot in a short amount of time. Ellen is huge now, so anyone that had their doubts back then can eat their words
Ellen's a smart gal and made the right choice. That sitcom was garbage, just like most sitcoms, but what she did with it is legendary. She's right--one year doing what she did was better than a decade doing a "safe" sitcom. It would've likely been pulled eventually even if she'd never come out, just because she was the only interesting aspect of the show. And now look where she is.
I remember watching this show as a teenager in UK and loved the humour of all involved. Never did I once question the humour or any topics involved in the episodes, to me it was comedy and great. I watched the last episode with tears, as I couldn't understand why they had cancelled this amazingly funny show. I was saddened/ angry/confused that it had ended. Then years later when Ellen's talk show appeared and it became bigger and bigger and bigger, I thought back to the sitcom and wondered, how many people who turned their backs on her then, where now climbing over themselves to be involved !!!!!🤔
I agree, everyone should be able to show their love. I try to advertise my sister's singing career but people don't think I am normal for doing this. i do not understand your situation but I beleive I understand how you feel; how people think there is something wrong. everything is perfect, you just have more love to give
Sex in the City had sex every single episode and that became a seriously famous show. Ellen just showed that she was "gay" in some episodes and it got canceled. Wtf lol
I still heart break even it's a looking back from this time. Ellen's eyes are so....i don't know it made me heart breaking. I'm so happy when I watch Ellen Show nowaday and see she's so so so happy with her life now. (sorry for my poor English)
Seinfeld isn't about Jerry being a heterosexual male. WELL DUH. A tv show with a gay character coming out is going to have different episode themes than a show with a straight character. If society didn't whine about gays in the first place, we wouldn't have that issue. 'Our audience has been dealing with racial issues, and is much more open to differences in race than differences in sexual choice'. Ok Sherlock. That's BECAUSE of pioneers for civil rights....like ELLEN! Plus it's not choice.
watching this in 2013 and i am so happy to see how far ellen has come today and how far the world has come when it comes to gay rights. No way in hell would anyone question a celebrity of being gay in a negative point on national tv anymore. I love you ellen
Anybody who talks about how “people are too sensitive today not like years ago” LOL. They had to end the show because people thought it was “too gay” by 90s standards, even when they were subtle about it.
A person isn't about their sexuality~ its about who they are as a person! What they do in their private lives behind closed doors, has nothing to do with anyone else! Heterosexual, metrosexual or homosexual, Black, white, yellow or red--- who we are as people doesn't change us because of our skin colour or sexuality! I love Ellen & her great talk show, as she has a heart of compassion for EVERYONE... Thanks Ellen for allowing us to be apart of who you really are xx:) A big fan
Today I spoke to few of my friends, and they were all homophobic. One of them told about the punishment given to the gay people (in bible) another one was disgusted at the whole idea. For a second there I didn't know how to tell them that one of my all time favorite celebrities is gay. I was thinking of Ellen the whole time each time they spoke against gay people. I love Ellen and because of her as a heterosexual I am proud supporting gay people.
karthu1993 i feel like a lot of people demonize homosexuality instead of realizing we are all human and we all sin and in the eyes of God all our sins are the same. So me judging someone for their sin is hypocritical when i also sin, just differently
She did help pave the way for equality.. I love this woman, she is a light to every Gay person, and some who might just happen to be in a dark place in their life. She is a huge inspiration. Personally, I owe her a lot, even if it only be the fact that she exists in this world. I'm still waiting to legally marry the love of my life, so progress has a ways to go, but I am thankful for what rights I do have, even if I do have a sense of 2nd class citizenship, it's shifting in the right direction.
''sexual choice'' ??? ABC guy made a BIG ERROR saying that!! Non-educated people back then obviously. Look at houw MASSIVE ellen is today and a high INSPIRATION!! Lots of people are saved within themselves by Ellen having the personaility and smart humour she has! She is a breath of fresh air. A Legend in the celebrity world !! An massive input to society.
She should have brought the show to England. All our soaps have had gay/lesbian storylines, its actually becoming strange not to have at least one homosexual couple on one of the soaps. America should get over it. It's natural
I know Ellen's not the most favorable character in the world, but I feel so bad just watching the newly-found happiness from the '97 interview, finally being out and feeling free to be herself, to how defensive and hurt she is here. ABC are scum. America is, has, and always will be scum, but I digress.
I live in Spain and I'm homosexual. I saw the series when in was already canceled in USA and didn't knew who Ellen was and all that happened because her coming out. I was really surprised when I saw "The Puppy Episode", although it wasn't a great deal here. I agree that the next episodes revolved too much around her sexuality compared to the previous ones, but I think the real problem is that they became too serious and less funny.
I think it isn't important if someone is gay or not. They are the same. And ellen is just great I love her, even though she's gay and I think she is adorable. She says she's gay and this is really wow,not many people do that. The interview is really touchfull she talks about all this soo honestly.Ellen is hilarious, she tells the truth has the right oppion about everything and it doesn't matter if she's gay or not. This whole interview and ellen are just one word : ADORABLE
I do resent when gay peeps go on about Black people acceptance comparisons. As much as I love Ellen, you don't up and tell your parents "Mum Dad, I am a Black woman."...
But black people was hated as well. Black people had to live with an apologetic attitude for years. It is not the same, but socially does not make any difference. We are all people, we do exist.
Black people do NOT have monopoly on civil rights. Black people think they own pain and suffering...you don't..native americans, woman's liberation, chicano movement, jews all suffered...and so too are gays with homophobia. One thing that can't be denied is the black community has been at the forefront of anti gay laws and voting against gay rights. That's a STAIN on YOUR black community. Every other demographic seems accepting and open minded, but black people consistently want to play the oppression Olympics. More over, I the black community wants to get biblical...it's laughable considering the black community has the highest rate of teen pregnancy, divorce and out of wedlock pregnancy. So please spare us your anti gay soap box.
As true as that is, the oppression is similar. There are people who stand as firm on their opposition to skin color as there are people who stand firm on their opposition to sexual orientation. The only difference is when you're black, people will accept you can't control it and it's who you are even if they're racist...they can accept that simple fact because it's visible. You can see it. If you're gay you're isolated because unless other people are gay too, they can't share in your struggle. if gay people had a permanent stamp on their forehead from birth that said 'i'm gay...people would accept it easier. But as soon as something is internal people automatically assume that you can control it. And that's not right because that's like painting the world in black and white when nothing in the world is that simple.
Jeremy Jeriscando poor poor little orphan gay guy!!... Why is gay woman Ellen using the Black thing then? That was my point.... Monopoly?!!!... Do u do the same to Jews or women? The same amount of resentment? Beside the fact that I was merely making a light joke of the whole thing, I do think u need to come down a notch... Keep ur political crap to yourself. Black bashing bastard.
Ok some people here are really stupid. So I make a joke and I am a gay basher and a hypocrite. Get over it, and do not choose the opportunity to find all sorts of plagues with Blacks. Morons. Black and or White Nazis!...
The part where Iger is interviewed, I feel like he just needed to say that they ultimately are a business and if the show isn't watched, then they lose money. It may have been more about the money than the theme or quality of the show.
Ellen was like any other heterosexual show. The only difference was that the main character was gay. It is so infuriating how people can say it's too gay. Is it too gay to be yourself? I get really annoyed with all the ignorance in this world. It's sickening.
@HorrorDoctor Because straight people do not relate to homosexuals. Simple as that. It's not a hate, or a dislike. It is simply a different lifestyle that tends to not interest heterosexuals. I don't see why this is shocking to people. I'm not a big fan of tennis. If there was a sitcom about tennis, I wouldn't watch that either. What's the big deal? When homosexuals stop being a minority, I'm sure there will be more homosexual shows.
How gay is the show? Wth? Sitcoms are based around the unfortunate incidents of real life. And that is love, family, friends... Tell me, if you cut out anything in a characters life relating to their being gay, what material would you have left? If you can't laugh at yourself, you'll stress yourself into an early grave.
"It would have been nice..." Unspoken part of that sentence: "if she would have just stayed in the closet and not jeopardized our ratings and therefore our bottom line."
I love Ellen..but didn't care for the show. I'm straight and seeing homosexual characters in dating situations does not appeal to me. Why? Because I'm not gay. Just as a kids show is not going to hold my interest. Why? Because I'm not a child. If there were enough homosexuals, I'm sure the show would do just fine. This doesn't make it a "gay" issue.
Love Ellen. Watch her show all the time. Think Portia is a gorgeous woman. And Im glad they are happy. But I dont agree with homosexuality. I am a Christian and understand the bible to mean it is a sin. And I support my beliefs with my votes...not by hate. Just knowing I serve Christ should tell people my views. Why hate? Why tell them that I think its wrong? I will in a discussion group because it is for opinions or if Im asked. But I can keep my beliefs and still love people. Christ does.
@GavriellaMichal -I put it down to lack of education. And how they have been reared. Mother and Fathers narrow mindedness i guess, lack of understanding nature etc..
Neither am I fighting with you! It just feels wrong to me and it doesn't to you. Simple as that! No fightings needed... Although I don't cherish the insincere "sweety!" lol

Jeremy Jeriscando Very well said.
It’s so true. I was thinking the same thing. Most of humanity has progressed to accept AND LOVE gay people EVERYWHERE. And I love your thought HUMANITY WILL ALWAYS PREVAIL. Yes! I have so much love and respect for Ellen.
But morality has regressed... increased violence and increased evil has sky rocketed since the 90s.
Her eyes are so sad in this interview. I'm glad she's happy and successful now.
So crazy to watch this now!
She is the kindest person on the planet !!! I 'm glad that she is so happy now she deserved it more than anyone
I bow to Ellen in honor of her strength, wisdom and courage. Her heart is beautiful.
She obviously won in the end.
ellen was so sad... that's horrible :/ she's such an inspiration for me. I mean I was 4 when she came out and 16 years later her sitcom has an impact on my life. She's such an amazing person !
Yep, she was so proud of her sitcom, but she went so far now... It's unbelievable 😁
I love this interview,
Thanks a loooooooot for posting!

Ellen is the truth. She is so brave..
This woman gives me so much hope and I am so overwhelmed and consumed with love for her, holy shit.
this literally just makes me wanna hug ellen, i hate seeing her feel so bombarded, attacked, and judged. thank god todays society is much more accepting and everyone i know loves ellen
Things you wouldn't hear in 2013 because the person saying it would get (rightfully so) ripped to shreds :
"Is it TOO GAY?"
I support Ellen all the way! I knew she would get far, and now almost everyone knows her. She is amazing.
this was only 15 years ago, things change alot in a short amount of time. Ellen is huge now, so anyone that had their doubts back then can eat their words
Thanks for posting, I love Ellen!!!!
Do you have the original interview she did with Diane Sawyer from 1997, that aired after the coming out episode?
On June 26th, 2015 we got it, Ellen!! :)
I absolutely love Ellen Degeneres xx
god shes been through so much!!! she deserve all she has achieved. LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU ELLEN!
Ellen's a smart gal and made the right choice. That sitcom was garbage, just like most sitcoms, but what she did with it is legendary. ELLEN DEGENERES IS AMAZING!
Thank you Ellen a million thanks!!
I feel like we've come a long way since 1998 :)
I remember watching this show as a teenager in UK and loved the humour of all involved.
Never did I once question the humour or any topics involved in the episodes, to me it was comedy and great.

20 years later this is so uncomfortable to watch.. so sad seeing ellen like that. she didnt deserve any of this
I agree, everyone should be able to show their love. I try to advertise my sister's singing career but people don't think I am normal for doing this. i do not understand your situation but I beleive I understand how you feel; how people think there is something wrong. everything is perfect, you just have more love to give
wow, that interviewer sounds so... wow.
"Is it TOO gay?" "but it IS gay!" she sounds so harsh.... so cold
Sex in the City had sex every single episode and that became a seriously famous show.
Ellen just showed that she was "gay" in some episodes and it got canceled.
Wtf lol

love her! thats why she is a star!!
watching this in 2013 and i am so happy to see how far ellen has come today and how far the world has come when it comes to gay rights. No way in hell would anyone question a celebrity of being gay in a negative point on national tv anymore. I love you ellen

You can find it on TH-cam, search for "Ellen Degeneres 20/20 April 25, 1997"
i agree, her eyes look so sad and the light in her is dimmed. im so happy for her success now and that light in her has never shined brighter

LUV Ellen
I love Ellen so much!

America should get over it. It's natural
Oh awesome, thanks.
Everyone knows who ellen degeneres is but wait who is Robert Iger? 🤔 exactly lmfao
He’s now the CEO of Disney and I’m pretty sure that most educated and intellectually sound people know who he is
I know Ellen's not the most favorable character in the world, but I feel so bad just watching the newly-found happiness from the '97 interview, finally being out and feeling free to be herself, to how defensive and hurt she is here. This is sad.. She looks sad.. She looks so happy now. I'm glad for her..
shes not sad - shes fighting
Religion and politics shouldn't mix. Equality rights should not be up for a vote.

I like Diane. She's a really good interviewer. :)
"Sexual choice'? Stop right there, there's no choice in the matter, I speak from personal experience..
@ElleBee81 agreed. people make this all about discrimination which played a part in it but overall it was a legitimate decision in my opinion.
Its so sad because in 1998 people do accept or deal with Gay,lesbian,bi transgender, And until 2013 still people dont accept ....
an acceptance of paulbonerism that has to be accepted in this day and age
@fannizsozso agreed.what's even sadder? people still believe it's a choice despite scientific evidence that it is not.
Fame and money doesn't make a wrong thing right!
The part where Iger is interviewed, I feel like he just needed to say that they ultimately are a business and if the show isn't watched, then they lose money. It may have been more about the money than the theme or quality of the show.
prison matrons and gym teachers :D word.
Ellen was like any other heterosexual show. The only difference was that the main character was gay. It is so infuriating how people can say it's too gay. Is it too gay to be yourself? I get really annoyed with all the ignorance in this world. It's sickening.
@leparditas yeah so she is a woman and she gay. What is the big deal? She's not actually the only one who is gay. And she is married to an actress.
@HorrorDoctor Because straight people do not relate to homosexuals. Simple as that. It's not a hate, or a dislike. It is simply a different lifestyle that tends to not interest heterosexuals. If you can't laugh at yourself, you'll stress yourself into an early grave.
"sexual choice" never ceases to anger me...
producers and tv company needs money that's all. gay or not gay if it's not rainsing enough money they fire people...
@mcflystyle that was actually very well said except who the fuck says "an massive..." hahaha
"It would have been nice..." Unspoken part of that sentence: "if she would have just stayed in the closet and not jeopardized our ratings and therefore our bottom line."
@janistonbest agreed.
diane sawyer interviewing her boss bet she was nervous!
Equality means like for like....
its disrimination, the reporter is correct
Slowly, but surly.. :)
This doesn't make it a "gay" issue.
being gay is not wrong, in the bible it says tht God will love u for who u are y do people make such a big deal bout it ?
Christ does.
however, i like that she said "well, she IS gay every week"
@GavriellaMichal -I put it down to lack of education. And how they have been reared. Mother and Fathers narrow mindedness i guess, lack of understanding nature etc..
Ellen is so cute =].
Neither am I fighting with you! It just feels wrong to me and it doesn't to you. Simple as that! No fightings needed... Although I don't cherish the insincere "sweety!" lol
And that wrong thing would be? I'm not fighting with you sweety.
"Sexual choice..." Robert Iger... no...
@Super gugis..... I agree!!! -3
I love Ellen, you are my hero
The interviewer is sooo annoying.... oMg
diane was so rude......
she looked older back then... Bet she had a few surgerys?
