  • Isambard Kingdom Brunel, (9 April 1806 15 September 1859), was an English engineer. He is best known for the creation of the Great Western Railway, a series of famous steamships, including the first propeller-driven transatlantic steamship, and numerous important bridges and tunnels. His designs revolutionised public transport and modern engineering.
During his short career, Brunel achieved many engineering "firsts", including assisting in the building of the first tunnel under a navigable river and development of SS Great Britain, the first propeller-driven ocean-going iron ship, which was at the time (1843) also the largest ship ever built. His steamship the Great Eastern played a significant part in laying the first lasting transatlantic telegraph cable in 1865

One does not generally associate Clarkson with rail documentaries, but it has to be said that when he does them, they're very good!

    • @dickJohnsonpeter

Or any other documentaries besides this one for that matter. May and Hammond did a ton of them. Jeremy could totally have a career doing this if he wanted. He's not the brightest chap on Earth about history or science but his voice is nice to listen to and he's a great presenter and narrator.

One of the biggest mistakes made back then was not adopting Brunel's broad-gauge track width and we are suffering the consequences today

Hi a railfan from India. We use a 5ft 6inches gauge. Trains are normally 10ft 8inches wide (The ICF and the LHB coaches). But, the EMU commuter trains also known as the Local trains have 12ft wide coaches. In Japan, Shinkanshen also called bullet trains run on Standard gauge track and they have nearly 11ft 2inches wide coaches. Even there commuter trains which run on 3ft 6inches gauge also called Cape gauge have coaches as wide as 9ft 8inches. On the other hand British trains only have width of 9ft 3inches. This width is generally used on Cape gauge railways. I feel Britain should increase their Loading gauge at least by 6inches.

The USA had different gauges until the 1870’s. The Belvedere Delaware that ran near me was 4’ 10” instead of 4’ 8 1/2” typical. Most southern RR’s were 5’ I think.

We end up having locomotives with big wheels in the early 20th century anyway, a wider gauge would have opened the doors to later generations on better railways than at the peak steam locomotive technology in 1950s.

9:15 Typical England we set up an impossibe task to complete deliberately to obstruct someone of great thinking, only to be out done and out thought by someone who just did it anyway. Epitome of Brunel.

Hm, I read on a webpage that people only were concerned that the long arch bridge would collapse once a heavy train passed over it, they knew it would stand on its own. Brunel therefore left the scaffolding in place, although he made sure they lowered it slightly so that it appeared to be a supporting part of the bridge, whereas it didn't actually have contact with the bridge.
A year later a flood washed away most of the scaffolding but the bridge remained safe and sound.

And all this hullabaloo today about HS2... Brunel would think we are all stark raving mad and wonder why the hell in the this the technological age we just cant pull our finger out and build the modern equivalent of what he managed to build in an age when child mortality was an everyday occurrence and an eyepad would have been a luxury after losing something, with no anesthetic.

Uh, jeez I.K, I really hate to break it to you but I think you already went mad some time ago. Don’t let it get you down chum, I mean it’s the 19th century! Just try finding someone that’s not mad, thats a real challenge for you! And all that blood on your hands from the countless bodies your projects stacked up? Nobody even remembers their names and they still think you are a national hero, you get statues and everything. 😊
