I like that Ana was the carry in the Gibraltar game. I can’t explain why but it made me happy to hear that. Also props to you Freedo for showcasing a similar play style a while back in a video which I THINK was called “good tanks don’t need healing” or that at least was what the thumbnail said. I remember you posted gameplay on Numbani wherein in you told your team only you touch cart and then you did a lot of that sneaky contesting that we see in this video. Fearless hiding around the corner on King’s Row reminded me of you sitting in a room near cart just contesting. Anyway, I appreciate the video and a new take on Winston. As with many heroes I got good at him and then he got balanced out of the meta. At least in his case I got a lot of good games with him first. They shut Doomfist down as soon as I was finally ready to take him out of Deathmatch and into real games. My buddy still quotes some of my Winston taunts though.

I think it’s fair to say that the healers that helped the dive were pretty pog. Look at his health 99% of the time he dives in. He is basically pocketed

@@funbun420 Reapers are actually fairly easy to outplay in ladder. A lot of the times they're stupid and switch to Reaper out of a braindead response to counter you. They don't actually adjust their playstyle. Although that changes the higher you go I guess. If you time your engages right and scout well then you CAN avoid them.
Yeah "no skill weapon", which reminds me of some genji dude who accused me of aimbotting on Winston, lmao! x'D We just had better team comp, with Zarya, Ana and Brig healing and bubbling me all the time, so they couldn't beat us and we pushed them back to spawn near first capture point. :D
Winston has been incredibly underrated for the longest time and even more so now with his recent shield buff. I've mained him for over a year now and nothing is more hilarious than getting 4 golds with the tickle cannon

Most of this video I couldnt help but notice how much healing he was getting. If I had healing that good i would be killing it too. Anyways I think Winston is one of the best characters in the game. As a Winston main with 400hrs I can pretty much deal with any other character except Roadhog, Bastion and Reaper. Those are really the only characters that are harder to deal with.
If you aren't able to effectively kite a Reaper, especially maps where high ground is readily available (hint: these are where you should play Winston), your 400 hours aren't giving you much help
@@alexisgeovann the only way a Reaper stops dive from getting too much value is either on maps where there's no high ground to kite to and from sitting next to vulnerable targets like a Brig would. Seoul literally tried to run Reaper against this and got reverse swept. It is literally in this video in the very beginning, a clip of a Reaper being forced off high ground and now having almost no way to stop Fearless
I really wish people wouldn’t instantly assume I’m throwing because I pick Winston. Remember, he was the main metta back in the day (Seasons 3-7 ish), and he’s still strong in the right hands.

Yeah, stop calling this dive. Dive is dead. I tried explaining this to my team and no one listened. 2020 Winston is all about soft engage and using high ground manipulation to go in and out of fights without dying, basically engaging on and then disengaging set positions. The first engage is just a soft engage that gets cooldowns out -- like immortality/sleep/nade. The second engage is the one that really gets kills. Winston is also heavily map dependent now. Lots of high ground - you can use Winston. No high ground - no Winston. This is because Winston uses high ground to escape, because no main tank can follow him. Notice how Fearless *never* uses leap to engage. Leap is not an engage tool anymore. It's an escape tool. Leap gets you into position TO engage, and you engage by DROPPING onto the opponent, and leaping AWAY and disengaging with the team. Dive is ebb and flow now. You use your mobility to get into position, descend onto your target without using mobility cooldowns, and then use your mobility cooldowns to get OUT, heal up, get back into position, and go again before their cooldowns are back up. But Winston needs to be played around, just like Rein and Orisa need to be played around. Ana needs to heal him, Dva needs to DM him, and the DPS need to engage on the targets he brings low with his tesla. As long as people have the mentality that Winston and dive are go go go jump jump jump kill kill kill, Winston will be a throw pick. Winston is about patience, set up, knowing when to disengage, and re-engaging properly.
And here I was thinking it was all just in my head that Winston just felt a little better to play this season. Without knowing this is more or less the style I adopted in playing him in the past few weeks and it does work if you know how to manage your bubble and leap.

I am worried sometimes because I get flamed by teammates playing Winston for not basically babying my team by shielding them in rather than them not peaking into the value of long range spam heroes. Not saying I play a perfect Winston, but I definitely have improved and worked on my engages and cool down management. When I say my teammates peak and die I mean before I even really get a chance to engage properly. For context I’m a diamond player. Hopefully you or someone could comment on this. Love your videos!

This survival mode that Fearless play is amazing, but unfortunately it requires a lot of communication with your team, otherwise your team will think that you're a coward Winston. So everyone defaults to Reinhardt. Great video
This guide works for ranked, but I feel like this is especially helpful if you are in a scrim/team enviornment. If you play on an amateur team you can really maximize stuff like this because you can count on your teammates. That said, this is great for ranked as well :)
I have been playing Winston like this for a while, since a whackton of cc/burst became the norm. Basically, don't hard commit unless you can't 100% guarantee a kill, yet still mantain presence and demand attention so cooldowns come at you instead of your team.
what i would like to see is at the end of the video a step by step guide on things you need to do to achive this, because this was a lot of information just thrown at you
Been playing Winston on High plat-low diamond and one season i almost hit Master. He is extremely fun to play if you play him correctly. Even if the enemy team got a Reaper it doesn't mean that you NEED to switch out the Winston (if they have both Reaper and Hog then it is a different story). You need to have Reapers CD in your mind at all time. Use ur CDs to help peel their Reaper if he goes deep for a kill and play Winston like a staller and backline asassin.
I knew that if I’d come in here I’d be treated to a man talking about a video game that I’ve been playing for years in a way that I may never understand, but god damn it, I’m still listening!
I wish the max sensitivity would be raised on consoles, some of those flicks he did while leaping were a lot of frames faster than you can pull off on console. Getting out of the enemy back line 0.100+ seconds earlier can still make a big difference in high ranked games in my opinion.
Winston was one of those weird heros I never understood (or at least tried to understand) how to play. Seems like he's more of a "delayed gratification" hero where you break up the enemy team and the rest is up to your team.
This is a new style that I really wasn't familiar with. I still think the optimal strategy for ranked is "frag Winston" due to the disorganized nature of the gamemode. However, if you do need to play more passive this style allows you get a lot of value as well.
I main Winston in diamond right now and can tell you without a solid Ana or a pocket zen it can be difficult to stay up for the long stretches shown here. Totally doable but don't expect these results without pockets.
I haven't played in 2month will be playing back soon but I feel this style can be used and is very similar if your a ball main(not the one that just dives and feeds ) the reason I like ball and Winston is basically the disruption that they can get and the resource that they can bait Into gives your team a huge advantage I love hammond he will always be my favourite tank (3200 main tank player )
Recently dropped back into gold for whatever reason. Nobody knows how to play around Winston, on both sides. I would constantly be asked to switch to a shield (including maps like Gibraltar and Numbani) and when the enemy dps switched reaper, they still werent able to do anything about my monkey. I think that winston is very under utilized in the lower ranks.
@@chryic237 start on high ground, full health, behind their team with both jet pack and bubble available. Drop, do not use jet pack, onto/behind their supports. Time your bubble to block cooldowns such as sleep, flash, etc. It is meant for this more than blocking damage. Because you didn't use jet pack, you can now use it to escape to high ground. Rinse. Repeat. There's obviously many other factors, but you'll learn with time, trial and error.
Feel like this needs a preface of: this ONLY WORKS if you have an attentive team comprised of healers that have your back and dps that capitalise on the opportunities you provide them with.
if you want to be a pro winston in immune spots just jump to the highground or over walls because there they have to move to get you and thats where you jump back and kill them because your a tank with the fastest ultimate charge
I hate when people say winston is useless for defending in Payload matches. Sometimes using him can be a better advantage then a shield tank and can stall for a longer time if you know how to stay alive
Can you maybe do a video on Projectile heroes, such as Zen or Hanzo? I’m a gold Hanzo and want to climb, but it’s a little hard, what with teammates and smurfs, among just them being way better
physically move yourself and the threat that you pose into positions that force the enemy to move away from you. basically forcing the positioning of enemy players to let your team have more free room to move or push/use abilities safely. there's a lot more that goes into it tho
The way I understand it, making space is done by enabling your teammates to fight and allowing them to occupy a certain space on the map safely. For example if a Winston can go into the enemy team, draw fire, and survive, the enemies will turn their back to his teammates and back up giving his teammates an easy opportunity to push forward and shoot exposed enemies. Rein similarly makes space by holding shield for teammates allowing them to stand safely behind it or by getting aggressive and swinging his hammer to draw enemy attention and fire. This allows his McCree for example to get easy shots and push forward himself into a position that would have gotten him killed if the Rein was never there. This is the primary job of tanks, but anyone can make space for teammates. A Widow on a flank angle for example who denies enemies areas of the map and takes their attention will make it easier for her team to get more aggressive in the moment.

Well, OWL supports can heal a crapton of HP, but at the same time even tanks can die in under a second thanks to the equally insane dps/offtanks.

I wish the max sensitivity would be raised on consoles, some of those flicks he did while leaping were a lot of frames faster than you can pull off on console. Getting out of the enemy back line 0.100+ seconds earlier can still make a big difference in high ranked games in my opinion.
Meanwhile I pick Winston in diamond and people go crazy asking for a shield.

Winston was one of those weird heros I never understood (or at least tried to understand) how to play. Seems like he's more of a "delayed gratification" hero where you break up the enemy team and the rest is up to your team.
This is a new style that I really wasn't familiar with. I still think the optimal strategy for ranked is "frag Winston" due to the disorganized nature of the gamemode. However, if you do need to play more passive this style allows you get a lot of value as well.
Pro tip spam primal punch when you punch enemies and spam how embarrising every time you kill them 100% tilt win rate

I main Winston in diamond right now and can tell you without a solid Ana or a pocket zen it can be difficult to stay up for the long stretches shown here. Totally doable but don't expect these results without pockets.
I haven't played in 2month will be playing back soon but I feel this style can be used and is very similar if your a ball main(not the one that just dives and feeds ) the reason I like ball and Winston is basically the disruption that they can get and the resource that they can bait Into gives your team a huge advantage I love hammond he will always be my favourite tank (3200 main tank player )

Recently dropped back into gold for whatever reason. Nobody knows how to play around Winston, on both sides. I would constantly be asked to switch to a shield (including maps like Gibraltar and Numbani) and when the enemy dps switched reaper, they still werent able to do anything about my monkey. I think that winston is very under utilized in the lower ranks.

@@chryic237 start on high ground, full health, behind their team with both jet pack and bubble available. Drop, do not use jet pack, onto/behind their supports. Time your bubble to block cooldowns such as sleep, flash, etc. It is meant for this more than blocking damage. Because you didn't use jet pack, you can now use it to escape to high ground. Rinse. Repeat. There's obviously many other factors, but you'll learn with time, trial and error.
Feel like this needs a preface of: this ONLY WORKS if you have an attentive team comprised of healers that have your back and dps that capitalise on the opportunities you provide them with.
This helped a lot. I now have an excuse to play Winston on defence 😂😂😂
Winston this season has been my best tank this season, although it's going to be my last, ended it wit a bang on Winston.

I like winston, he plays a lot like a highly mobile short range bastion. Needs constant support but will otherwise control a match when done so

if you want to be a pro winston in immune spots just jump to the highground or over walls because there they have to move to get you and thats where you jump back and kill them because your a tank with the fastest ultimate charge

I hate when people say winston is useless for defending in Payload matches. Sometimes using him can be a better advantage then a shield tank and can stall for a longer time if you know how to stay alive

I always hear make space but what exactly does that mean?
physically move yourself and the threat that you pose into positions that force the enemy to move away from you. basically forcing the positioning of enemy players to let your team have more free room to move or push/use abilities safely. there's a lot more that goes into it tho

The way I understand it, making space is done by enabling your teammates to fight and allowing them to occupy a certain space on the map safely. For example if a Winston can go into the enemy team, draw fire, and survive, the enemies will turn their back to his teammates and back up giving his teammates an easy opportunity to push forward and shoot exposed enemies. Rein similarly makes space by holding shield for teammates allowing them to stand safely behind it or by getting aggressive and swinging his hammer to draw enemy attention and fire. This allows his McCree for example to get easy shots and push forward himself into a position that would have gotten him killed if the Rein was never there. This is the primary job of tanks, but anyone can make space for teammates. A Widow on a flank angle for example who denies enemies areas of the map and takes their attention will make it easier for her team to get more aggressive in the moment.
