What a massive endeavor, I salute you Erick.
Your community posts are all over my youtube feed 💀 didn't expect to see you here as well.
My favorites were
Tales of Graces f
Cold Steel 1 and 2
Valkyria Chronicles
Symphonia Chronicles
Xillia 1 and 2
Neptunia Victory
Tales of Graces f is one of my favorites.
I'm playing Xillia for the first time and loving it! I've almost reached the end and I might just jump into the second one after I finish it.
@@yunogasai1338 You get to play again as the other character. Extra content after Milla dies.
@@AsakuraYukiko Good to know. I'll play milla's story later. Xillia 2 is pretty good so far.
It's tough being a FFXIII fan. :(
But great list as usual! I enjoyed seeing some of the JRPGs I've never heard of in particular.
I got that for £3.3333333333333333333333....(3 for £10 with Fallout NV & Fallout 3).
I would have put XIII-2 highter, honestly. Say what you will about XIII and LR, but XIII-2 was a really good FF game (the last good one I've played, actually)
Imagine being a ff13 fan.
@@alicialockhart1081 don't yuck other's yum
FF XII is the last great FF we have gotten imo. Lets hope XVI delivers! FFXIII aka final hallway is absolute garbage.
I did not just watch a 45 minute video about every PS3 jrpg

@@Outmind01 I agree

Just remember that the ps4 emulator is a scam/virus as of this comment.
Was just about to request this video! Excited for maybe a 3DS or PS Vita one in the future :)
I was just looking to see if he made that video yesterday
Yeah I can’t wait for DS and 3DS
Same I need to know these things! Lol
Resonance of Fate is one of those games where you can easily bounce off the combat mechanics, but I loved them after getting the hang of them and the gun customization. Also loved the characters and setting though the story was a bit messy. I would give it an A personally.
One of my favorite games. Would do well with a sequel
Would love to see a PS1 game tier list as well. Also, I get that this is a personal tier list, and they aren't your preferred gameplay experience, but Dark Souls is literally in contention for top 10 games of all time regardless of genre and this man gave it a C and made it sound generous lmao.
I totally missed Lost Dimension. Really looking forward to catching up on it.
I really enjoyed FFX-2, the jobsphere system was amazing, the story was fun, the b-list villian was funny and the songs in it are catchy :)
I agree, such a fun game!
I just finished FFX HD for the 6th or 7th time. And I am actually hesitating on FFX-2, the job system was great but the Active time battle was a bit messy (What I hate actually the most in FFXIII). It would've suited my taste more if there was an option to deactivate it as in the previous titles. Also Vegnagun as a villain...meh.
@@bootesvoid1275 there is, in options

@@robertpadua6096 The only thing I hated about it is the time limit, it killed me on Majoras mask too. Makes me panic lol

Greatly appreciate it. 😅
Love your ranking videos. When I am looking for a new JRPG, I look to your videos to find one.
Definitely agree xilla/xilla 2 are s tier.
Yep i liked it more than grace f and symphonia.
I played through all of Last Rebellion and it didn't get beyond okay in places. Unintuitive, but fairly short and felt pretty good once you figured out the right patterns against enemies. Far better than the other Hitmaker games in the end.
As for Time and Eternity, that's my next Let's Play as I'm in the minority of loving it.
33:50 fun fact, you can finish this game with almost no farming if you want, the only ones where it's needed are for quests (main story and side), events & things like that, which is rare, since most quest just revolve around "find this island for me, find my lost item, talk to this girl for me, etc."
if you need money, selling monster materials is the better option imo, since it's more fun to battle and also faster too
13:10 Good god, does the world need more of this attitude right now.
"If that offends you, I don't give a rat's ass." Well F'n said.
Yeah the world could always use some more edgelords.
@@tiago9819 Right, because not catering to everyone's idiotic political views these days, is "edgy". You got it, bud.
I agree. People are too sensitive about everything these days.
They always have to get what they want and have to whine about it.
Why can't they just deal with it? If they did they'd at least grow as a person.
I think Resonance of Fate deserved higher ranking despite it's faults. I also really wish they had done a sequel as there were so many unanswered questions at the end of the game
I like these kind of videos, can’t wait to play lost dimension. Yes it’s on steam
Thanks for letting us know. I've heard about it on Erick's channel several times and never though about looking it up on Steam. If it's on sale for $10 or less I might pick it up.
Great video, I really enjoyed collecting the PS3 JRPG set. Working on the PS4 set right now, man there are literally 100+ PS4 JRPG’s!
He did it! Definitely cool to see you overall opinion of each game. I've never even heard of a lot of those.
I absolutely adored Widardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls and Class of Heroes 2G and Dark Souls is my favorite game of all time! And Dragons Dogma is AMAZING haha. Still though I appreciate your channel and opinions and you can dislike something without making the fans rage. Great shit, great channel.
Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel is definitely an underrated gem, in my opinion. The setting, characters, and story just grew and grew on me the more I played. Also the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal - and many of the songs have such emotion and passion behind them.
This was the dark ages of JRPGs.
I mean I guess. I played a lot of old jrpgs from ps1 and 2 on the ps3 for the first time lol
PS4's situation with JRPGs isn't much better actually.
@Zold İ don't think , because PS4 period give some popularity to some RPG series . Fire emblem , Nier and some of them begin to popular and people's begin curious about previous games i guess
Tales of Zestiria, Berseria😢😢😢
This is a great way to have a list of games to check out. Also the XIII trilogy is amazing for me personally, but most of the games here I wish I knew about in the past. I'll definitely try out in the future.
I never played 2 or returns but I actually enjoyed the first one but the final boss kicked the crap out of me
@@KramerJones If you enjoyed xiii, I feel you'll like 2, at least for the combat alone; that's usually the reason why some enjoy any of the trilogy lol.
I'll be honest, when I first play ff13 I hated it, the auto battle seemed so off-putting to me, I guess it was ambiguous change to the previous games. However I came back to it a few years later when 13-2 came around. I gave it another try a really enjoyed and then I went on to platinum trophy the trilogy. Lightning returns was my personal favourite. Slight criticism was the gameplay of the first two games seemed practically identical.
@@riyuphoenix4533 I'll tell you right now that I was the same way, thought XIII was boring as hell and traded it in after playing for a few hours, tried out XIII-2 a year or so afterwards and dug that, which had me consider giving the 1st another go and it clicked. That led me to try LR . . . 1000+ hours later and I love it. All of that aside I count XIII-2 as the better half as far as combat is concerned between the 1st 2, since they are the same, just that XIII-2 made some improvements.
@@mekannatarry1929 I totally agree, the main tip I would give for most people just wanting to do the story. Lightning, Fang and Hope are the best team. Also put Lightning on a speed weapon build, seriously faster moves trumps attack power for her, all about that stagger gauge. Also I personally found the terminology really confusing at first, so I read a synopsis to clear things up.
Apologies for the long comment, just think people should give this series a shot.
The Tales series are also awesome, but maybe not stary with zesteria as I would say it's a slightly weaker entry to the series.
Thx for the list, i added some of those games for my buy list
Thank you for your honest rating on the Soul games. I agree with you. They’re influential, yes, but not really my type of games either.
Good video man!!
Would be cool if a) could make your list public, or listed in the video description. b) be cool to see some more of these but for other systems or IPs etc.
Great video, just sat through the whole 45 minutes. As Mekannatarry said: "This is a great way to have a list of games to check out." It was also very entertaining, even tough I know most of the games through Gamez of War.
Not a ps3 jrpg but I enjoyed Infinite Undiscovery in xbox360 . The story and gameplay is not the best, but the protagonist's atitude changed along the way especially when that certain event happened. His voice lines changed from requests to order during fights like from "Can you please heal me?" to "Hurry up and heal me". He became unempathetic and ruthless that his teammates were surprised, but reverted back to his original attitude.
This is an excellent video, my only complaint is you don't say much about S tier games, but I love the video , thank you!
Nino kuni is an S for me,preferred it to persona 5.
Great video, loved it!
FFXIII has one of the best OST in the series, S tier. Haha
Time and Eternity I at least enjoyed because of what it tried to do even though there were some serious flaws in the gameplay and the lack of enemies.
They simply had the same enemy but with a different color and the only good thing about Time and Eternity was it was short so the game didn't overstay its welcome with me.
Good experiment to blend Anime style of animation with a 3D based environments, it just failed in execution but I would give it props for trying something even if the developer may have bit off more than it could chew.
Thanks for the video ❤ was actually really helpful as I just recently picked up a ps3.
Ironically Final fantasy 13 and Final fantasy X-2 are my fave games in the series to date😂
Just found drakenguard 3 and eternal sonata and decided to get them because the art style intrigued me
As someone that has 100% completed Last Rebellion, I can safely say an E rating is warranted. The combat system was convoluted at first but after some digging, I found a hit guide on where to hit enemies on their body in order to deal the most damage, which I thought was neat. However, just when the story started to seem it was going somewhere, bam! You beat a tough boss and it was the final boss. It was terrible, it deserves the E.
Bad thing about ps3 rpgs is some of the games prices are skyrocketing
I appreciate your thoughts and agree with a number of the rankings for the games I have played. For me personally, however, Final Fantasy XIII would be moved to C or B, XIII-2 to A, and Lightning Returns to B (I'm apparently one of the few who thinks the trilogy is seriously underrated), Resonance of Fate would be moved up to B or A, the Souls games would be somewhere around B or A, and Drakengard 3 would be moved to A (really enjoyed that game). Those are all my personal tastes though. Hope you do more lists like this one.
FFXIII personally are my favorite PS3 JRPGs, so you're definitely not alone there.
hasn't played lightning returns but still put it up on the tier list. this is an example of a +1 gamer. doesn't play stuff for the fun just plays stuff so he can say he got another game done.
I would've given Tales of Graces f an S rank. Beat it once on my PS3 80gb "Fatty". When that died and I started again on a slim PS3 I began a new journey. And eventually played through multiple play through s to complete the game. Pretty much the second Tales game where I didn't hate any party character. Tales of Vesperia being the first where I didn't hate any party character. Aside from ToGf I agree with your rankings. Well done.
I just found out that I can get Chrono Cross on Steam. I think I'm going to start playing it tonight. I used to have it for the PlayStation but I never beat the game. I still have a PS1 and a PS2 with memory cards.
@D. I have three PS1 memory cards and one PS2 memory card. I have both a PlayStation 1 and Playstation 2
As generous as we were with classifying games as jrpgs, I'm kind of surprised Eye of Judgment wasn't on this list.
Given what you have put on the list, why do you not consider the Yakuza series to be JRPGs? It is about the story; it has character progression; it has random encounters; what is it missing?
I agree with pretty much your entire ranking, especially with S and A tiers, but imo Resonance of Fate and Natural Doctrine are not bad RPGs at all, they just have complex battle systems (somewhat similar, now that I think about it) with a long learning curve, but once you get a hang of them, they become really great and rewarding. Also, FFXIII and XIII-2 are not that bad either actually, they are definitely B tier imo, but Lightning Returns is pretty bad, yes. Oh, and you forgot to include KH games and Atelier Rorona Plus in the ranking.
Would love to see a vita one of these videos! Love your channel dude
YEEEESSSSS!!!!! I have been waiting so long for this video 😭😭😭
Great video man! I was just thinking of my PS3 backlog today. I’m planning on starting Cross Edge soon. I love all your videos and watch them over and over. I’ve been watching for years. Keep up the great work! I also love that you brought back hidden gem/hidden trash
Enjoyed the humor of the Disgea games even if I never finished them.
Looked online for some of the endings of those Disgea games considering how long they can take to finish.
Dragon's Crown is one of the best 2D Brawler games and one I really enjoyed considering I used to play Golden Axe at a friend's house back when I was a kid on their SEGA console.
Didn't get to play a few other games on the list, mostly focused on Anime style games considering I only had limited amount of budget so there was always going to be games that went under my radar and some I regretted not picking up when I had the chance like DragonGuard for example.
Totally agree with your S tier. Nier and Valkyria Chronicles are the bests PS3 games in my opinion. The only difference in my list would be the Tales games. I like Graces a bit more than Xillia and Xillia 2.
Amazing work!
i loved drakengard 3 until the very last rhythm game which is impossible to do on a DS3.
I always enjoy your videos and I truly appreciate that you showed gameplay and just talked about each game.
Great list, great presentation.
my favorites jrpg ps3
- tales of berseria
- etenal sonata
- odin sphere
- dragon crown
- dark souls 1-2
- nier
- persona 5
I see Time and Eternity is still the ultimate meme of this channel lol. Also automatic upvote for Milla thumbnail.
Thanks Erick you're my reference in Retro JRPGs
Great to check PS3 JRPG selection!
Awesome video. I nearly broke out in hives over FF13-2 getting a D. Easy A for me. Completely overhauled the issues from 13.
And Dark Souls is an S. I know you don’t care for them, but for the influence it has had on gaming for the last decade alone it’s a true masterpiece!
Keep up the great work. I love hearing the different opinions on all games!
Trails of Cold Steel I only got the first game, never got the second one simply because games with long trilogies I really felt burnt out due to the experience with Final Fantasy XIII games and regretted not getting Cold Steel 2.
Trinity Universe I enjoyed simply because of the characters but really felt that the developers should have improved the battle system because the same mistakes were made in the first Neptunia game.
Valkyria Chronicles I loved it and was thankful to get it on the PS3 when I did before it got too hard to find.
Overall the PS3 was a JRPG heaven for me since I was a Nintendo kid console generations before and was really desperate for some JRPGs to build up a good library of Fan Service games.
Agreed
im so impressed you at least briefly reviewed all of these, great video!!
Erick is like my RPG dealer. Kinda like the same games! Thanks.
So after i checked all your vids, i now am able to see where and when the jrpg golden age did collapse...
15 years ago, on ps3...
RIP...
I wouldn’t say a collapse, but there was definitely a shift in style and gameplay. However, after 20 years it seems the older style games are becoming popular again.
Eternal Sonata is a masterpiece indeed!
Absolutely adore that game.
Awesome video, love the list!
The only ones I would rank a bit higher😅 is Resonance of Fate (I enjoyed it a lot 😃 story and the gameplay, though it was really unique) so for me would be an A.
and FF13-2 that's the one I enjoyed the most from the trilogy, thought it was much better than the first one and last one, and I really liked Noel and Sarah 😄 so a B+ or A for FF13-2
I agree with FF13
and FF13-3 was still better than first one so C+ or B maybe....
But yeah I understand everyone has different tastes 🙂
Great concept for a video. Great execution. Informative. Through. Personality infused excellence.
Imho if your tier is S or C or D doesnt really matter. The dialogue about the games is what hooks me.
Natural Doctrine is an amazing game
Agreed, people tend to hate it just because they didn't bother to understand its battle system mechanics properly.
Résonance of fate D...
It's a fuckin' masterpiece, probably just too hard for you to get it.
Cross Edge was one of the first games I imported from America on the PS3.
Really thankful I got to play it as it introduced the JRPG companies thanks to the characters.
Was introduced to the Disgea series characters as well as from the early Ar Tonelico and Atelier characters that appeared in JRPGs from the PS2 era that I never played but was interested in supporting those series when they came to the PS3 later on after getting this game.
Introduced me to companies like Gust, Nippon Ichi, Compile Heart and Idea Factory as those would be companies I would get to know further especially with Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise that was to be released just a few years after Cross Edge was made.
Plus I got to know the DarkStalkers characters from CAPCOM and was fully invested into getting the fighting game on the PSP that I eventually did get not long after playing Cross Edge, though I really did had to hunt my local Game Retailers to see if they had any copies of that PSP fighting game.
Now that's what i'm talking about
Now this is the kind of stuff i want
Not just 10 games
ALL of them
Nice
Well shit I was thinking what rpg should I go for next and then a teir list drops. That's crazy
I simply got Tears to Tiara 2 because I knew the first game was a H-Game from Japan and I enjoyed the Anime adaptation, so of course I had to get Tiara 2 when it got released on the PS3 and thankful I did.
It reminded me of a less difficult Fire Emblem style of game and really loved the music especially the credits music.
Tears to Tiara 2 is something I really loved when I played it in 2014 or 2015 that wasn't that long ago compared to other JRPGs I played on the PS3 earlier.
Tears to Tiara 2 i also got for the same reason, but also because Utawarerumono. However I got about 3/4 through it before putting it down, I didn't really care for the characters or anything. Probably go back to finish it someday.
@@Lelouchxzero1 When you get the time to come back to Tears to Tiara 2, it is worth it especially with some of the Music on the ost of the game.
Though considering the strategy and the save states, you will need to have a good 2 to 3 hours of play time per session because some battles can be a challenge towards the ending and cut scenes can come with long Visual Novel segments before you get to the save point.
finally i have been waiting for this 🙂
The Fate Paradox games on the PS3 reminded me allot of that PSP game that was the Unloosing Ranger Vs Dark Death Evilman.
I was a little bit disappointed that the humor of the PSP game didn't made it into the Fate Paradox games as NIS was the developer or co-developer of those rouge like JRPGs.
Good games but I preferred the PSP game Unloosing Ranger Vs Dark Death Evilman better due to its Kamen Rider/Super Sentai Nonsense sense of humor.
I almost had a coronary when you started to say NieR was trash before you finished and put it in S 😂 I was like.. “whaaaaaaaa??!”
I don't think Resonance of Fate is a D tbh. A C would be understandable due to its convoluted gameplay but the story is not bad.
Tales of Graces F I loved and I also played Tales of Vesparia on the XBox 360 and really enjoyed those two Tales of Games.
Was getting fatigued and was running out of room to store my PS3 games so I never got the other Tales of Games due to how many JRPGs I was getting just for the PS3.
So that is another reason why there were times I never got some JRPGs on the PS3 when I should have given them a chance, partly because of budget and partly because of space in my cabinet that I was storing all my games into.
They are too time consuming
My personal faves are Dragons Dogma, Valkyria Chronicles, and Nier.
Time and eternity and resonance of fate were heart breaking 😢
Final Fantasy was "reborn" after XIV in my opinion. FF XV was unfinished but was a god tier project (free anime, free movie, amazing game, my first Platinum), and with FFXVI coming along, it's back on track. Not to mention the FF7R.
You think? I made it through maybe an hour of FFXV before I had to put it away in disgust. It's like they had somehow figured out how to make cringier cutscenes than we'd been afflicted with in XIII. Do I need to give it another chance? The boy band motif and pushing the car was just the worst to me.
It's definitely not reborn after XIII or XIV. While i did find Final Fantasy XV kind of decent, it just had too many flaws at launch and felt rushed and unfinished. And even with the good things it's still FAR FAR from how good Final fantasy was during the PS1 and earlier era. I do think XVI shows promise though, i really hope that game turns out good.
Always wanted to try out Trinity Soul of Zill Oll, too bad it was released only on PS3
Good List!
Gotta disagree with The FF 13 trilogy being a D tho. People undervalue those games especially FF 13/2. Yes the story wasn't the best but it looked beautiful, music was great, and the battle system was fun once you got it down. I'd give it a B.
But love the list bro!
Can't wait for you to do a PS1 and/or PS2 ranking.
he's already done both
@@FLIK510 Thank you for correcting me! I didn't think he would have tbh, can't believe Erick has actually played them all!
If you want class of heroes 2g make sure it's the A variant on side of case or ask the seller
I've played Asdviine Saga and Asdivine Cross on the PS4 for trophies and trust me, you're not missing much. These games have DLC boosts that make the games a joke but they are brutal otherwise. X_X
Now we need the 3DS rpgs
Very good video !
This kind of ranking is always tied to the feeling each player had with the game when trying it, so there are as many ranking as there are players.
I would have a similar ranking but I would have ranked some games higher on the list (+1 rank for FF13 and cross edge, + 2 ranks for disgaea 3, disgaea D2, tales of zestiria, and for me agarest 2 is A tier and resonance of fate is S tier without hesitation. This game is really hard but when you understand the game’s mechanics it’s a real gem !) but it really depends on everyone feelings.
Sometimes you begin a game with big expectations and you block on a difficulty, the gameplay or a feature that doesn’t match your taste and it often ruins your experience while a lot of people enjoy the game, sometimes it is the contrary (you enjoy the game while others don’t like it).
In the end, PS3 had very good JRPG, not as much as the PS2 but great games that I really enjoyed !
Halfway through the video I don't undnerstand why the only S so far has no description/elaboration :( I love eternal sonata would love to know your thoughts on it. Is it in another video or something
yeah every time he is talking about ps3 hidden gems and stuff you know eternal sonata is gonna be in there
Fairy Fencer F I enjoyed and even though some content was hidden behind DLC, I just focused on the base game.
The Final Fantasy games on the PS3 were the most disappointing compared to what game before but I really enjoyed XIII-2 simply because Sarah was appealing as a waifu for me and I liked the monster collecting.
If you are a Final Fantasy fan, you would be better off playing the Final Fantasy 1 to 6 on the GBA for the classic feel for the series and if you are into the PlayStation Final Fantasy games, then 7 to 9 are good even if I never played them but I do know of people who do love those Final Fantasy games on the PS1 system.
LOVED the Hyperdimension Neptunia games, mostly because I am the Fan Service type of person regardless of what others may say, so its ok for you to give them a D, I give only the first Neptunia a D due to the bad design of the dungeons and the Battle System being so slow, but the MK2 and Victory are A in my view because they improved what was lacking in the first.
Lost Dimension I played and enjoyed but only got the bad endings due to me always making the wrong decisions.
Mugen Souls I enjoyed for the fan service we did get, but I would give them an F because of the censorship that Nippon Ichi Software America did that ruined the series, thus the reason why Compile Heart and Idea Factory left their partnership with NISA.
Natural Doctrine was really REALLLY hard Fire Emblem, only you can't allow your characters die.
Really badly designed but only persisted until the ending when it became too hard.
I bet he's rating the Neptunia games so low just because he's trying to get brownie points with the stupid feminists
@@fanofgodjimindiva2497 That might be true, anyone who says fanservice is something to be ashamed about is always something on my overtly cautious until I find the evidence list.
I am a Souls fan so those are s rank for me
You're the man!
You missed Sword Art Online: Lost Song. It had an English translation but released on disc only in Asia territories.
Also, the Penny Arcade adventures games have an active time battle system similar to Final Fantasy VII so I would consider them JRPGs as well.
His definition of JRPG is "games made in japan", not about visual style or battle system. It is the same as mine, so not a Jrpg.
@@theLikou1 Then why would he include Vandal Hearts, which was developed by Hijinx Studios in California?
@@theLikou1 And your comment fails to explain why he missed Sword Art Online: Lost Song. It was developed by Artdink in Tokyo.
@@amosrozet9325 That was his error, I was not responding to all your questions, dude.
Great video
I agree that the PS3 Neptunia games are garbage. The Rebirth games are way better.
Can you rank every Dreamcast RPG? Also, can you do a video on every RPG with customizable characters?
My favourite jrpg of all time is Final Fantasy 13. Pretty sure theres only me lol
As a die hard final fantasy fan I would rate the 13 trilogy as "A". I do understand the dislike due to it being so drastically different from typical final fantasy game. I too was thrown off initially but after about 20 hours in I really started to enjoy it. I completed all three along with a ton of side quests and wound up loving them!
