    1985 Porsche 924 NA.
    In this part I tackle these 35 year old font brake calipers. Someone painted them before few times but did it without removing them from the car. They were very rusty and full of gunk inside and out. This is not a how to but you can see basic steps if you got the same car. It should be a similar job on 924s and 944 as well.
    Let me know if you got any suggestion and comments.
    More 924 videos coming soon!

    Appreciate the honesty of showing the reassembly with painted components. Went through the same struggle due to layer thickness.

      Yeah, I always try to be honest about my mistakes. I'm still learning too.

    I'm glad you have a sand blasting cabinet; those parts cleaned up very nicely!

      Thanks! Sand blasting is great, but I need to get a bigger cabinet, or build one.

      @@RestorationApprentice I wonder if you hand-sanded or scraped the faces and edges that touch if the parts would have assembled easier?

    • @RestorationApprentice
      @RestorationApprentice  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bruinflight Yes, I tried that on the other caliper I assembeled of camera, but some of those parts are hard to get by hand so I ended up doing the same thing as shown here...forced it a bit. I should have assembled them afther sand blasting and then paint them as those two parts are not moving when in use.

    Thank you very much for adding the list of tools & products you use! I have just started my own restoration of a 1979 Porsche 924 and am enjoying your videos as I'll have much of the same work to do on my 924. I too have only a little experience so decided to do this restoration as a learning experience.

    I've been cruising Porsche 924 restoration clips cos one has been parked on a street near me and its in shabby shape....I might have to make the owner an offer :-) Nice video!

    Those looked about as bad as mine did when I started, minus the red touch up paint.
    I would have saved a few hundred bucks if I had blasting equipment over paying my powder coat guy. Nice work! 👍🏼

    really enjoying working through your vids mate, ive always painted calipers with VHT paint, did you have any concerns about heat when doing yours? interested to know as maybe when i do them on my 924 i might not bother with the VHT if not necessary!

      Thank you! I'm not sure, I've seen plenty people doing it this way.... We'll see how it holds up over time.

    Where did you get the new pistons, and what brand are they?
    Currently doing my winterproject:
    Full front and rear suspension rebuild.
    Rear axle is a pain in the ass, lots of rusty stuck bolts which has been broken off.

    • @RestorationApprentice
      @RestorationApprentice  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't remember the brand, but I got them from Autodoc. Good luck, I was able to get all my bolts with a torch and a big impact gun.

    • @mr.v465
      @mr.v465 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RestorationApprentice My 650Nm Impact gun didnt break the (suposed to be 46Nm) bolts free, another 1360Nm impact gun with heat broke or stripped them. 😐
      Going for powdercoat for the calipers.

    Is it absolutely necessary for the pistons to be at 20 degrees? Will something bad happen if they arent?

      @@RestorationApprentice thanks you. Didn't find theme anywhere. Restored mine.
      Btw, do you know for the 20 degrees to the brake mounting if it's based on the right or left side ? (I mean, for example, for the left caliper cylinder, do you have to align it with the left-hand side of the mounting ?)

      I got mine at autodoc.de but I would recommend Ate kit if you need plastic sliders too.
