    $800 for a killer bass amp with a tube preamp, built-in D.I., and an effects loop. Awesome. I just wish that they would have taken it a step further and made it two channels, and footswitchable. But, no complaints. I would be proud to own one.

    Most bass amps that have speakon out use those speakon / 1/4" jack combo sockets. Have you tried plugging in a normal jack cable? EDIT: I just read that you responded to that exact question already. Kind of weird why they don't use those on this amp. They are the same size and have the same amount of solder points to connect. They aren't even really more expensive.

    With eq set flat, does the OBT500 have a flat frequecy response or is there a baked-in mid scoop?
    I read comments on forums that suggest the tone is mushy and gets lost in a mix. My thinking is, well, maybe that's the case at high gain settings. Then one naturally wonders whether the amp has enough headroom to stay clean enough to cut through.
    Any thoughts?

  • @ArunKamathMusic
    @ArunKamathMusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    On some bass amplifiers, the speakon connection can also be a regular jack connection in the middle. Is that the case with this one?

    • @crossbowpanhead
      @crossbowpanhead 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an Orange 4x10 and the OB1-500 head. Strangely, the cab has the the combo jacks, but the head does not.

    • @Sco1t_
      @Sco1t_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe Orange just want to make certain that idiots don't try running a 500 watt head through an instrument cable. And given that Speakon is in most ways a superior connector and fairly popular amongst bass equipment (why it isn't for guitar I'm not sure) they figure it won't cause too many problems leaving the TS standard behind. The number of players wanting to use their Terror Bass with an old cab that doesn't support Speakon I imagine to be pretty small, and the number of those that would rather buy a different amp than a Speakon to TS cable... Well, I doubt they will lose much sleep over those lost sales.
      On the other hand, if you had a 1/4"-out-only head that you were looking for a new cab for, you are far more likely to walk past a cab that doesn't have the right input. Even though there's no real reason why in that instance an adapter wouldn't work, I think the mindset of a customer in that scenario is different and Orange are conscious of that.
      Who knows? More importantly, who really cares and why did I bother writing out all this like the mutterings of a madman?

    Can I ask how you recorded this? You say mixed the amp sound with the DI. Is it mic'ed or going into the Universial Audio OX, and if the latter are you not worried the power is too high for it? • @ferox965
      @ferox965 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the original. I've only ever used it with 8ohms. I use it with the Orange 1x15 cab. My two main bands are very loud, both have energetic drummers. I've NEVER needed to go to noon with it. If I go any more than that, I will waste the rest of the band and everyone else in the venue. It is louder than hell. You can definitely play at low volumes too.

    • @XanderYTV
      @XanderYTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a popular mixing method, mixing the DI of the bass and the amp. Since a lot of the time to get those distorted metal bass tones you lose a lot of the punch so you fill it in with the bass DI.

    Why are bass amps rated at much higher power than guitar amps?

    • @EorAmbient
      @EorAmbient 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      takes more energy to push lower frequencies.

    • @GrassFed67
      @GrassFed67 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nick Bass frequencies need more headroom and it takes more energy to play lower sounds at higher volume because you need to move more air than with a guitar amp. Also, most bass amps tend to be solid state and most guitar amps have tubes. Tube amps sound louder at a given wattage because it's fine to drive a tube amp past it's clean power rating. With tube amps, this is distortion from the power section. On solid state amps, power amp distortion sounds like ass. You can't drive a solid state amp past it's clean power rating because of how terrible it sounds, so to get more volume, you just increase the wattage. Plus, we don't hear low frequencies as well or precieve them as loud as mids and higher pitched sounds due to where human speech sits. This is why 100 dB at 80 hz sounds quieter than 100 dB at 3000 hz. Even though you're moving a ton of air, it just isn't perceived as being as loud.

    • @lfox02
      @lfox02 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oooh. So if you wanted to make a lower wattage bass head, could you just go with a tube power section or is this not practical?

    • @GrassFed67
      @GrassFed67 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Solid state amps are just cheaper, so I'd buy a lower wattage solid state head. Just because the tube head would be lower wattage, that doesn't mean that is would be quieter. Amps are rated in clean watts, so a tube head can be pushed a good bit past it's rating where ass a solid state amp cannot. The biggest things with tube heads are cost, weight, reliability, and maintenance. I actually prefer tubes, but tube bass heads are usually pretty expensive. I know stoner metal and psychedelic rock rigs the best, but the most common bass amp I see on stage is the Ampeg SVT CL (other models are popular for metal and rock, but they have a solid state power section). It's a 300 watt tube head and is loud as hell, but they weight like 80 pounds, cost $350 to completely retube, and are close to two grand brand new. On top of this, you have usually tube amp fuckery, like microphonic pre amp tubes, output transformers that might fail, and power tubes that can fail catastrophically. Also, bass amps don't distort as much as guitar amps, so you can get away with a cheaper solid state bass amp when compared to a similarly priced solid state guitar amp. Solid state guitar amps really only start to lack when you try to heavily distort them, so for bass, the amount of tasteful distortion you can get with a solid state head is plenty. If you want a lower wattage bass head, most people just buy lower wattage solid state bass heads. 500 watts is plenty, but it isn't anything crazy like a 500 watt guitar head would be. The only real drawback besides sheer volume that I've noticed is tube heads take pedals a lot better. I have yet to play through a solid state head that takes fuzz pedals well, which is a huge deal breaker considering the kind of music that I typically play. Unless you need a great sounding amp for recording distorted tones, or play with a lot of fuzz, over drive, or distortion pedals, solid state bass amps are the way to go. If you have a bass pre amp (like the stuff Ben Verellen makes), you could always get a cheap guitar head as your power amp and slave it to the pre amp. I slave to a $250 100 watt Peavey Windsor and have a relatively quiet bass rig. If you need high gain tones, I've also had some success with just plugging the bass amp right into a guitar head. If you do this, make sure you're playing through a bass cab.
