funny how bass players are commonly more open to new tech and the advantages it brings, than us sometimes ultra conservative guitarists. in my 15 years of playing, i've only met one bassist who swore by only using tube amplifiers though even he changed his mind down the line and uses a solid state amp for playing gigs nowadays.
The power-to-size ratio of these new bass amps is amazing - 20 years ago, no bass player would have taken these tiny boxes seriously. BUT, I _also_ have yet to see a bass amp with a pre-amp section that comes even _close_ to my old Trace Elliot GP12 SMX. That one is not just loaded with features, but also with features that I _use._
Hi Colin ! Interresting proposition, and Orange seems to be a reasonable company. So I went to my local dealer to test it. I must say I've been terribly disappointed. This hardware doesn't handle properly a 5 strings bass, lacks power and attack, and finally, I failed to recognize the original sound of my basses. I wouldn' replace my - as light and compact - current set (EBS 210 NEO and TC RH750) by this Orange config. Anyway thanks for your good work, and keep doing basses related videos :-)
I've always wanted to hear the results of blending the direct signal with the mic'd sound. I'm not disappointed in the slightest. All the clarity of the DI signal with the low-end of the cabinet.
It's really the way to go. In one band I had set up of Clean DI (from a preamp pedal), Dirty DI (from an overdriven head) and a clean and dirty cab mic'd with stereo effects. Too bad we never finished the album, the demos sounded wild and they were just beginning to fully take shape
Sounds ok, but I'm not hearing anything that would make me want to spend over $1,000 on it... there are perfectly good compact heads from suppliers like Trace, TC Electronics at a fraction of that. Just my thoughts of course! Keep rocking 🤘
As a bass player myself I'm really enjoying the bass videos, keep it up! I'm running a similar setup by Markbass and very much like the sound of it. The notched volume control on this Orange head is rather strange though.

Ya, class D has really become refined these days. Powered speakers, these tiny but beefy heads, and here is another example: Crown is making a statement in the home audio circles with their mid sized PA amps. They are audiophile quality, and weigh 10# and cost $400+/- depending on the wattage model. The cork sniffers are crying lol.
There are some intrinsic qualities of Class A/B that Class D won't be able to match, but largely speaking the advancement in Class D technology has seen it compete and exceed in many areas, especially if you are willing to spend the money on a good one.
@@ScienceofLoud for solid state amplification, I feel like Class D is definitely the way to go nowadays. It's wildly efficient, and with proper design, can reproduce signals very accurately. OTOH, I think it'd be hilarious to watch someone attempt a valve-based class D amplifier.
Might be an unpopular opinion but I much prefer the cutting grinding sound of a solid state bass amp in most cases for rock and metal. You can also be more extreme with the frequency and tone shaping in solid state amps, which I found useful for bass. The Traynor SB series are all excellent bass heads that don't break your back or the bank, I still have a 200H kicking around for basement jams.
Can you do an afraid to ask vid on ohms. As in should they match between amp and cab, running two cabs and changing the ohms, and how to determine what ohm rating is your amp and cab if it is not written on them. I've read conflicting information on the net.
When demoing bass gear it's important to sample the range of tone from the instrument. Slapping and twang are fine, but there is another very common tone from bass. That's thick and deep. Your rock and pop tunes are fine. Try to also send some thick Motown or Reggae tones through the amps too.

I’ve own the ad200 and the 410 cab. It’s a back breaker. And a money magnet it’s in the shop more than on the road. I’ve had good luck with the terror bass but they are great either. This is solves all issues. It’s light and can sound like the ad200 i like the 112 cab also it’s different and gives it more live.

That Di sounds amazing but really imo the cab sounds horrible. Very squished and scooped. Would love to hear it through a better cab be it different make or size

I don't like the term DI out when used on an amp for this reason. Balanced out would be a better description. The difference between the Balanced Out and the Cab sound will have a lot to do with my mics. They are not optimised for bass recording. There are better mics for this, but I don't own them.
The DI may be emulated to have the sound of the OBC410 so it’s going to sound different to a OBC112 even if the mic positioning was absolutely perfect.
The notching is not that common on bass gear in the past, it's probably notched for easy repeatable EQ curves in case you are touring with it or it's likely to be messed with. Honestly just buy a Joyo, Dr J bass DI and save yourself $800 and 2.7kg of extra weight it'll sound about the same sans the pretty weak sounding distortion **even though an onboard compressor is a pretty neat addition**. If it's a dry pedal platform you're likely to get near tone perfect results with pretty much any class D amp solution for bass 9 times out of 10 as it's normally just a case of what it is doing to your high end. *edit
Orange generally makes good stuff but I don't see the point of all this product double up for bass solutions unless its suddenly a very profitable market. Maybe might'e worked out bassists don't really care about tube and you make more money selling the bassist an array of lower end options rather than 1 amp. But as very few of the touring bass players I know own anything more expensive than a darkglass amp and all borrow my mates same BA Ampeg for stage sound, I'm not sure where this ethos has come from.
500 watts at 4 ohms not bad. Just wish there was a larger selection of small FOUR ohm cabinets. most small cabinets out there are 8 ohms for some god forsaken reason. like nobody wants to have to drag out two bass cabs for only 400-500 watts
The reason is probably to do with making single speakers that can handle 500W on their own. It's easier and cheaper to make speakers that handle 300W a piece at 8 ohm and distribute the full power across both at 4 ohm

motown bassists plugged straight into the desk, you can get that tone from pretty much anything.
