That croaky overdrive tone you talk about is the signature voicing of these amps. The larger and full tube AD200 is exactly the same. It’s an agressive and grindy tone that, I agree, a lot of players wanting to explore tube amps might not like. But I personally love it and is the main reason I charged from an SVT-CL to an AD200.
Can you coax a prominent mid range out of the TB? Does it have a baked-in mid scoop? I keep reading mixed views. Some claim it's too boomy and only does one tone. I think some of that is due to people's use (miss use?) of the tone stack. I'm thinking you could pair a graphic eq of you wanted more tone shaping. Thanks
I've been playing the Terror Bass for like 1,5 years now and I absolutely LOVE it ! Love the dirty overdrive, love the warm clean tones, love everything about it. Also don't be fooled by the name alone, it really does a lot more than just loud overdriven dirty tones. What you didn't mention I think is the price tho. I think it's increadibly cheap for what it does! Paired with the Sire V7 or P5 you have one hell of a mid tier setup for pretty much any situation you could think of. I giged with it, recorded with it and I couldn't be any happier ! Would love to see you dig deeper into valve amps. A comparison with the Ampeg SVT-4 Pro would be amazing and very interessting I think, since they are somewhat similar and fulfill similar roles..
just ordered one...what do you use for a cabinet?...obviously would get an Orange cab..but i am leaning toward a rumble 2 x 10 700 watt cab..to save some cash ..cheers
Is it possible iyo to have a fairly loud volume in a live/band context without having the tb500 saturate the signal ? I like to play in the sweet spot when it begins to saturate but o don't want to go fuzz mode.
How's the midrange? Some reviews make me wonder if there's a baked-in mid scoop. I wonder how much of this stems from how people utilize the tone stack 🤔
Nice to see the HB 414. Same color as mine own. A nice instrument for sure. And the Orange amp sounds like an Orange amp, of which I also approve strongly. Thanks.
Hi Patrick, If I remember correctly the EQ is a Fender tone stack so "flat" should be 2-10-2 or close to that on the knobs. Hope this helps!- Brent, VT
No need to stress about warming and cooling down with Preamp tubes. Power tubes 100%. And sounds lovely in your hands, i had the ad200 but couldnt get to grips with the odd Eq
My sunn 300t was having a lot of issues and with the tube shortage I decided to check out the orange terror. Found a used one and I have to tell you, I have never been as satisfied with a rig. I run it through a Mesa 1000 (410x115) at 4 ohms and I can’t believe how clean I can get it. Takes pedals like a gem and again, I can throw it in the case and take it wherever. I think my bass in the hardshell case weighs more. Couldn’t recommend this head more for a gigging bassist.
I need to become TH-camr so my poor ass can just be sent all kinds of stuff lmao generally speaking and joking, IK a lot of stuff you guys dont get to keep.
I like my Orange 50w combo that I use in my videos (no valve preamp) and like Orange products. I dug the tones here, but the lack of a line out is a bit of a deal breaker for me. Great vid dude! EDIT: DI on the right side. Noice!
I had a bass terror when they first came out loved the amp had some issues with power when using a 5 string ended up selling and getting a ad200 kept that for years sold that because it kept breaking down now I enjoy a svt vr and haven’t looked back. Love tube amps even tho I spend most of the time using a helix into a Mesa walkabout.
I'm torn between one of these and a Laney DB500H. Looking to play some stoner doom but still be versatile for my other bands so I could use some input (no pun intended hurr durr)
@SpaceJaicen I saw that shortly after posting my comment. I think emulated tube is enough of a deterrent that I'll go with the Terror. Someday I'll have the money for an AD200 or a Matamp Green GT200... but this will do for now.
I had one of these and was able to trade it for an AD200 Mark 3. They sound almost identical, they only start to differ once you start turning the gain up though, that’s where the ad200 pulls away from the Terror bass pretty hard. The AD200 has some of the best overdrive I’ve ever heard out of an amp, it’s devastating. Though the Terror bass can stay cleaner, longer and has the di and effects loop so it has some pros over the the Ad200 which has none of that stuff. The terror bass is also less than half the price of the AD200, smaller and lighter and has more features. They are both very very loud also.
I used to play the original Terror Bass 500 but recently switched over to the Fender Bassman 100T. I don't know what it was but I never really got the tone from the Orange that I was looking for and the DI out was terrible. The Fender on the other hand sounds amazing with the tube growl you get from an all tube amp.
It has a passive tone stack similar to the Fender Bassman where 2-10-2 is close to flat. They are VERY interactive. Alot of people won't like that. The new one you reviewed is more versatile than the old one, but less powerful. The old one was 500 watts into an 8 ohm load, and test more than 800 watts for a 4 ohm load.
That's one thing I love about the old version. It's nice to be able to get the full 500w without needing an extension cab. I can live without a clean channel.
it’s my favorite bass amp besides the ad200! i love the basic controls, i don’t like too many options anyway. i run mine as clean as possible, by cranking the volume all the way up, then using the gain as the master volume. and clean switch engaged of course. makes my pedalboard sing! i like to stack dirt pedals so it makes the signal as clear as possible. and using two obc112’s is plenty loud for all my gigs, unless i go into the doomy shit, then i bring my ad200 and bigger cabs. i’ve even complimented my terror bass rig with an OR15 into a 3rd obc112 for high end gainy sparkle, shit sounds so damn good
Patrick Hunter !!! hello patrick!! that good video !!! I'm about to buy a team mate like these but what do you think of the ocb 115 over the ocb 112. will the 115 be more powerful??????
Great video mate! You should take a look at the IdiotBox Effects pedals, especially the Blower Box Bass Distortion. I think you'll like their offerings, some of their dirt pedals are as heavy sounding as Darkglass for bass atleast in my opinion.
I have a couple issues with this amp. The DI is absolutely terrible if you try to run any sort of distortion through it. Super Shrill and fizzy sounding. Made the mistake of letting the sound guy run a line through the DI instead of micing the cab when we opened a 500+ capacity sold out show at the beginning of the year and it sounded horrid through my monitors. Also, it struggles with volume and gets a bit anemic when you start pushing it. Would not recommend if you play in a loud, heavy band. Gets completely lost in the mix even through my ampeg 8x10. Recently picked up the Darkglass 900v2 and it sounds immensely better. Love my AD200 but I think the terror bass is going up for sale soon.
Ampeg SVT classic, Vintage Reissue or V4b. Ashdown has a bunch of them, I know you just did the terror bass but the AD200 from orange is great as well. Fender Super bassman. Traynor has a few as well. Would love to see these demo'd. I definitely prefer tube amps. Lol
Nice video, man! Since i'm owning a Orange Crush 50 Bass i was wondering: How does the 'Gain' from the Terror Bass compare to the 'Gain'/'Blend' from the combo, because i can get some really sweet distortion out of the combo. Technically if I would upgrade to an amp/cab, could i get compareable tones out of the Terror Bass? Any kind of insight would be much appreciated!! 👹🤘
Try investing time, you might figure it out for yourself. He probably just meant it’s easy to achieve the Instruments tone and you don’t always have overdrive muddying everything up.
So electric instruments operate via magnets in the pickups. The vibrations of the strings cause the pickups to create a (unbalanced and relatively weak) signal. Amplifiers then make that louder but can also add color via built in cicuits or just as a side effect of the amplification. Technically the natural sound would try to represent that weak signal but louder. However in this case he means its dynamic and open sounding (read not compressed or overly affected)
I think you should make a review of the Fender Rumble 800 HD head and compare it with the Bassman 800 or that Orange. Those Rumble heads are very powerful and configurations are endless. Price tag is among the lowest in the industry and I wonder why!
serious question. anybody have an issue with these crappin out for like no reason at all? ive heard these had that problem. seems like a reputable brand like Orange would have stuff like that under control but the last amp i had (another "reputable brand") did exactly that. just shit out. seems like all the amps ive been attracted to have some dumb ass failure rate. i need a bass amp...
The unnecessary standby switch for a single 12ax7. You don't need a standby switch in an amp. It's only there if you want to keep your amp on and tubes warm while you're not playing the amp. th-cam.com/video/Bcovle3cSpM/w-d-xo.html
Why do you tell us about the weird drive sound but then you don't demonstrate this so that we can hear what you are talking about and decide for ourselves?.. bonkers.
Can anyone give me a comparison between this and the little bass thing..I am ready to buy one or the other ..is the Terror louder? And I would imagine the Little bass thing has a little more eq control...any info appreciated..I have asked before ....pretty please. FFS with sugar on top...Thanks.
I have a little bass thing. It's a really good amp. The eq is simple but flexible. The compressor sounds really good, idk what type of compressor it is but it sounds like an optical compressor to me. The compressor does add make up gain so when using it with a foot switch it becomes more like a boost effect. It is a good amp. I haven't got a terror bass but it seems like a better choice if you were to make use of the drive in the gain.
You only need three knobs. This I need 50 knobs to shape my tone. People don’t really care. The tone comes from your hands and you should be able to shape the tone from your guitar not the amp. The amp should be able to give you a little bit more out of the speakers that you’re not getting, but that’s about it. You really only need three knobs the simple the better.
I love how warm orange feels in general. Those analog electronics they do are wonderful
I think its your playing that makes all these amps and basses so cool

Whatever that purple Jazz Bass was, that was a very beautiful tone you got out of the combination.

Damn I'm jealous of that Kemper !
