I'm glad you're building some storage. You bring home some nice vehicles alongside the rusty rescues so it will be nice to keep them out of the elements. Can't wait to see the finished building and which cars you load into it.
it's always interesting to see how the different regions of the country do building and concrete. Up here in the dry side of Washington state we get some serious freeze/thaw cycles. Winters get down around zero F, summers up to 109-ish, sometimes hotter, colder as well. A 4000 psi is a good strength for footings, slabs, retaining walls are sometimes higher strength depending on the multitude of variables. When the crew makes it look easy, you know they've got the experience. That's a good looking slab. Up here we'd use a heavy wire mesh or a rebar grid in that slab. That adds a lot to the cost, nice that you don't need it.
Glad you're giving those rescues a home out of the elements...I'm sure it's a relief to now save them and give them a chance to survive longer term. I have one outside and the rest in my barn and it's bothering me alot to not have the room.

A neighboring farmer put up a fifty x 150 barn with a six inch slab. We poured the footings 36 inches deep and 12 inches thick, then formed the edge and built stem walls just below grade. All the mats were tied in units and we left the center for the driver if the front unloader trucks Some real pros showed up and the truck could reach across the fifty foot width and I as a farmer and carpenter brought some ideas forward that improved our part. They unloaded a ten yard overloaded truck every fiftern minutes with a screen crew of eight. These guys were friends working on a Saturday with their main job at the time building the concrete parts of the Bengals Stadium. They enlisted me for clean up work around the bolt pads that later held the steel posts of the building. They finished the concrete do flat that the deepest part of the very few rain puddles was 1/8 inch. Start to finish was nine hours with unneeded people dropping out as it became just finishing. One ride on double trowel had pizza pans and the other had blades Our little farm crew established grade and square of the foundation and the finishers had very good things to say about our work as they checked my laser established forms. It was a great day having that crew on the job and we did not need a pumper truck
When we put up our big workshop we had a portable concrete plant on site. And a pumper. Nearest concrete plant is a 2.5 hour round trip -- plus loading, unloading, etc. Not feasible for a high volume pour. Barely even feasible for a 20' x 40' garage.

Congrats on all the success you've had with your format. I initially started watching years ago when you had maybe 29,000? or so followers and I think maybe your most watched video had 350K views. I believe that was the white Pickup you and your son pulled out of the weeds. That was a great video and may have been the first of yours that I watched. I love that format of "let's fix up this old rusty POS and get it driving again". I love seeing old derelict things restored. This VGL channel is a great "behind the scenes" and lifestyle type format and really fills out the character and lifestyle we see in VGG.
It’s great to see you building up the homestead Derek it may be spendy but we all know it won’t be cheaper later either and you need the dedicated storage space now.
As part of my estate plan and my later years, I have asked my wife, who will probably outlive me, to make my years of lost memory and dementia the best for me. As I lose my memory all she needs to do to keep me fully occupied is to sit me in front of the iPad and play the endless (to me) videos of Derek and the Vice Grip Garage/Lodge. Every episode will be new. Keep a grip on your vices! Thank you Derek and family, you’re the greatest!
So happy for you man!! A modern American success story in action. Work hard stick to your values and meter your goals. Well deserved !!! A great family!!
That brought back some memories. As a younger man I worked for a company that did pool decks and rock work, as well as driveways and small commercial pads. Never worked the Bull Trowel or Whirly Bird but did my fair share of hand finishing. Good memories.
Wow a guy is really taken aback by this. Just to think, I joined when you had about 2k subs, videos were done by what I’m assuming is a flip phone duct taped to the neighbor kids forehead, and look at you now, prime real estate in tenesee, One dream man cave, soon to be TWO, and all the toys and gadgets to boot. I’m so proud of you, Jessica and all the boys for grinding this out. I always told you in comments that I really seen you going miles, and you’ve went thousands past what I anticipated. Couldn’t have happened to better people. Really really. Good work you guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I can’t believe it’s got no steel in it at all. And the reo they used on the wall is only 6mm mesh I would expect to see 12mm bar at least, I don’t think it’s going to last very long, sad to say it’s all going to crack and fall apart.
I really would like to have seen a french drain system up against that wall by the pond to move the overflow you said you sometimes get. In Commifornia we have to have them on any type of retaining type wall.
They can still add it before they concrete over that area. They can put a channel drain in the concrete and filter that water down into the drain system and away to a lower area of the property. I’d also like to see some waterproofing against that wall. I do this every day so I’m sorry if give my opinion on how I would do it. I’m sure they have their reasons.
Derek... God bless you and your family. You deserve it all. Not gonna lie....I like these videos just as much as your vehicle related videos. Keep it up!
I didn't see this one coming. Seeing the Packard drive away made me have some feels, so I cannot imagine how it got to you. I laughed when you called it small.
Congratulations! I enjoy seeing this hard working family achieving success!!
❤how do I subscribe
Awesome job Derek, very happy for you and Jessica…
Thank you for sharing. The crew did a great job of getting the concrete poured and finished. Going to be a nice space/barn.👍
Pouring a slab is completely different in Australia what you guys doing in America. We have to have Rio throughout everything.
My thoughts, exactly. If you're doing THIS much, to keep water out, why not add the French drain, too.
Busiest man on the web. And never a bad video. Always a good laugh and educational. Mint if ya squint
Derek... God bless you and your family. You deserve it all. Not gonna lie....I like these videos just as much as your vehicle related videos. Keep it up!
Being able to put some of the rescues under cover just makes sense. How many 'barn finds' we see now is incredible.
I didn't see this one coming.
Seeing the Packard drive away made me have some feels, so I cannot imagine how it got to you.
I laughed when you called it small. It is smaller than your other shop, but the new one is still multiple times bigger than my entire property, lol.
Congratulations on the expansion. It will be a great addition.
Neil :-)
Thx for sharing... AND, you are very welcome!
Thank you Derek for all the good times we had and hopefully many many more to come.
I used to work for srm and alot of those concrete workers.... great products and great group of guys to work with!
✌✌✌Excellent stuff seeing people realise their dreams through hard work and having a go Well done mate Australia is loving this !! ✊🌈☀
Shout out to those concrete placers and machine operators involved. Building the foundation of everyone's dreams day to day man.
CONGRATS !!!!
Thanks! A lot of hard work!
Drove a concrete truck for years and always good to see a pump on a big job like that.uch better than backing in and shooting the mud off the truck.
So proud of what you have been able to accomplish and thank you for taking us all along on the journey.🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Congratulations Derek on all of your success, glad to see some of the good rescues getting out of the elements.
Awesome!!
I think you may regret not running hydro just for some lights and maybe some cameras.
But I guess you can always run a line later if you change your mind.
Thank you for all the videos, it’s very obvious we all enjoy watching you! You have been a blessing to us and we have been a blessing to you as well. Keep the videos coming and we will keep watching!
Derek, it looks like you're really cementing your relationship with your Tennessee property! Just think 50 years from now what kind of barn finds will be uncovered! Your success is very well earned! All the very best to you, Jessica and the boys! Thanks for doing what you do so well! I watch all of your Channels, O'Reilly interviews etc.
Awesome to see you're hard work is paying off. If you wanna put some lights in that building there's a ton of solar lights that are very budget friendly.
