While climbing stairs may not be a daily activity for everyone, it’s often unavoidable. Since it can be tiring and potentially lead to injuries, it’s important to approach it with care. In this video, we show simple and safe methods for older people to climb up stairs with confidence.
1 Set feet shoulder width apart.
2 Hold onto the handrail for support.
3 Step up with your stronger leg.
4 Bring the other leg up to the same step.
5 Make sure each foot is secure on the step before moving to the next step.
6 Always step up with your stronger leg.
7 Always use the handrail for support. Your hand should be directly beside you on the handrail.
8 Remember to always take your time.
If you are supporting someone to climb the stairs
1 Guide their hand onto the handrail.
2 Remind them to always step up with their stronger leg.
3 Stay one step behind them.
4 Be ready to assist them if needed.
If they are not feeling confident...
5 Move beside them.
6 Place a hand on their shoulder for guidance.
7 Assure you are next to them on the same step.
Try to let the person do as much as they can independently.
