Same thing here, but then went into artificial intelligence and computer vision. Now I'm just finishing my Ph.D. dissertation. It all started with Watch Dogs.
Still the most misunderstood game of all time. To this day people still don't realize that the main character, Aiden Pearce, is supposed to be unlikeable, he is not a hero, the game is about how wrong vigilantism is and how Aiden falls into this rabbit hole, this cycle of violence and murder that completely ruins him and the people around him. Despite the fact that he goes against very bad people, he isn't a good person.
Ironically, he is my favorite protagonist because of his imperfections. He means well but gets impulsive or distracted, he brings people he loves into his dirty life purely without meaning to or realizing he is. However, by the end of it all, he is too far into the rabbit hole that he has nothing left for him now, so he plays what he put down and embraces the life of The Vigilante. Also his roast on the whole “Revenge is always bad, I’m empty” trope is amazing.
I never particularly liked Aiden or the games storyline in general, but that didn’t sully my enjoyment of the game. I just wish Ubisoft didn’t shove his family in your face to try and make you sympathize with him. Dead niece, kidnapped sister, traumatized nephew, all bc this a hole wants to play hacker man, and we are supposed to care lol. Nah. It was fun to run around hacking shit and blowing stuff up. The story was kinda garbage, aside from a few cool characters (jordy, lucky quin, that hick hacker dude that’s also in WD2; ETC) I didn’t see it as anything more than a half baked, poorly written excuse to engage the games fun mechanics and explore the very detailed world. Ubisoft is not known for writing particularly good, well written stories with intricate, deep, fleshed out characters.
It has an incredibly compelling non sterotypical ending where the hero wins and the villain lose The good thing is that even when Aiden wins ( he beat all the other bad guys) he still loses ( his sister and nephew left him)
@@arnowisp6244 The dude watched his niece die because of a hit that was meant for him and is suffering from PTSD as a result. Are you expecting him to crack Ezio-style one-liners?
In one hand, cd project red started hyping cyberpunk way too early in the development stages and the game was originally announced in the early 2000-2010. People were tired of waiting. In the other hand people pressured cd project to release the game before it was done and cd just obliged. When it comes to ubisofts mistake, they just showed a game that had nothing to do with the final product. At least cd is still working on cyberpunk
@@amaeltewolde4888Don't be too nice on CDPR. They fucked up just as bad. It wasn't the audience's impatience that made them release early, it was them being beholden to investors. Which they are 100% responsible for. They also definitely over-advertised the features of the game. And worst of all, the old console versions were _literally_ unplayable. Genuinely unprecedented levels of a broken mess. Praise them, cause they fixed the game. But don't stifle the initial complaints just because it's now good. They deserved all the flak they got.
I was there when the trailer dropped. After years and years of PS3 360 gen I remember the trailer being so mind blowing. Watching it now, it's the little things, the way the wind blows stuff across the street and how Aiden and NPC clothes and all fabrics on screen react to that wind. The passing subway train's lights and the complex shadows that it leaves. In hindsight all that is so much processing power being used for subtle things, it was glorious but it was never realistically possible. I think a lot of it was developers that had been stuck on last gen hardware like forever finally having a chance to unleash and show everything that they'd been dying to work on and try out and they got a little carried away in their excitement, got a little too ambitious and threw in EVERYTHING new and groundbreaking they'd been waiting to try with no solid idea of what next gen hardware looked like. I'm in a weird place with Watch Dogs because I was blown away by what I saw and thought it was the future of games and when it came out I was disappointed that it didn't live up to that trailer. At the same time I was still blown away by what we did get. It was still one of the best looking games of the time. It was still a huge leap over everything that came before. The game still looked glorious in the rain, at night. The depth of field bokeh effects were still amazing. The rain in slow mo still looked phenomenal. The gameplay was different and lot of fun too. Being able to stealth entire gang hideous by hacking stuff everywhere was insanely cool! So yeah it was a weird game that really disappointed and amazed in equal measure
I loved London in Assassin's Creed Syndicate too! I went there not long after playing it and was looking round St Paul's cathedral seeing where I usually climbed up from lol
This here. I love Chicago, but don’t live there. This takes me there any time in a ridiculously meticulous reproduction. Same for WD2 with the incredibly fun SF Bay Area. I live within a couple hours drive of New Orleans, for that, I’ll love and play Mafia 3 for a long, long time.
Watch Dogs 1 is one of 3 single player games that I've played thr campaign of more than once. While the game isn't perfect, the atmosphere is AMAZING. You feel like a real life batman, saving the city in the shadows but in a realistic way. 2 had the better gameplay, 1 had the best story, and 3... well yeah.
Legion is just a spinoff title the same way Ubi releases FC Primal/FC Blood Dragon/AC Rogue. Im still holding up my hopes for Watch Dogs 3 if that ever comes true
@evieyak Alien: Isolation (one of my favorite games ever), and Fallout 4! Usually only like to complete a game once so it forces me to always try new games out there, but might be replaying Skyrim soon.
@@grandmasterace4785And in three entries to this now-defunct franchise, we never saw anything remotely close to that, or, well, pretty much *anything* from the original trailers…
@@SaltSpirits I think there was a city-wide blackout hack you can get eventually in the first game. Didn’t play the second game much and I was bored with the third. Initially thought the concept of no lead protagonist would be fun but it just made me not care about anyone.
Third is not bad too ? you can play with Aiden full story and it is good game but what they make to play with different characters that destroyed 3 game they have no soul and do not have special conversation but Aiden have and that Anarchy guy kid :)
The politics of WD2 was too on the nose and polluted the game. I've found the third to be fairly fun and enjoyed playing various people for roles and abilities.
Hey! I posted the "Fall of Living City" mod that merges the two mods on Nexus! Saw this video on my frontpage and happy to see it shouted out, as making it easier for people to get both installed was my goal. I just realized its out of date, but should be updated shortly.
Sounds like gameranx went back to his internet journalist habits and turned his brain off instead of digging for the subtlety of the story’s writing. Aidan’s laidback/reserved when it comes to his own psyche, which is funny considering he’s a “social hacker”. Dude’s pretty complicated.
I loved that Aiden isn’t a perfect role model. He’s a flawed person who makes mistakes and can be an ahole. More games need to introduce main characters that aren’t good nor downright evil
idk how this statement is so chocking when yes, the story is pretty bland. I do love the game for the esthetic, music, ambience and characters but it does feel a lot that it’s not really great nor unique. in the storyline, hacking doesn’t really feel like the main focus when it’s the whole purpose of the game. Aiden is overall a John Wick that happens to hack stuff yk ? I’ve played the story like 5 times but yeah not anything great. it’s ok ? pretty nice at best ? not great when we’re talking about Ubisoft who made in the same period of time many more than great stories for their franchises. it isn’t even subtle storytelling, it tries to be, yes, but scratches the surface. we get the character but then there’s little progression. Aiden’s story feels carried by the world building made around him, but is a one dimensional character, really. it doesn’t even seems like he particularly enjoys hacking, just, again, happens to be able to. nothing wrong with an MC who is an asshole and a fucked up flawed character, but yeah it’s a serious story for 15 yo in 2015. not to throw shades, i hope my example is understood.
People denied themselves an aamzing game because the puddle was smaller and there was no leaves in the air, insane. Game was amazing story and gameplay, let alone the multiplayer was out of this world
@@DEVILTAZ35 yeah, i even got collector's edition, dedsec, aiden pearce is a badass. Amazing soundtrack, awesome gun fight. I didn't manage to play the 2nd , didn't feelnthe same, let alone the 3rd.
@@BitOfBoth The second one was actually pretty good. The 3rd one while it has a few cool gimmicks just isn't as fun since each of the infinite characters you can play can only have what they start off with as far as weapons which really hurt the game.
Yea, i just installed this game today and played for 1 hour, i wanted to play it again, now im here talking to my friend that this is a big coincidence 😂😂😂😂WTF
I think Watch_Dogs 1 was the best of them because of the story. Just one guy on a mission to take matters into his own hands after his life was destroyed. That sense of underdog justice while pulling all the stops against a large evil entity is hard to capture as well as Watch_Dogs 1 did. The later games were essentially just teenagers messing around and it's a lot harder to feel immersed into the story. Also Aiden is not a plank, just very introverted.
i played this game without mods in an xbox 360 at the time i played it, i had never felt something like that from a game, the graphics, the story, the animations, the action gameplay, the lighting effects... even without mods or something, this game hits different for me, even tho i had already played gta 5 before this just felt... better, in almost any way and for me its kinda sad that people think that this game only can be saved with mods because it isnt like that im pretty sure that some people who played it with mods saw things and thought "oh wow, this mod really adds cool details" only to turn out that those details where already in the vanilla game, thats kinda sad.
@@ITYSL I thought 3 was okay but the DLC was in my opinion better. I believe its due to being focused on set characters rather than the main game being randoms.
If they did a remake or major remaster of this game, I'd buy it full price. It was so fun to play back then and I still enjoy it now, but it does need help for console players
10 years… It’s so weird how I link my memories and longer periods of times to games as a 30-something guy. “Oh man, 2008 feels like ages ago, GTA IV came out that year and I have so many vivid memories!”, or “2013! I remember that year because of Battlefield 4!”. Same with Watchdogs. Really liked that game, maybe it’s time for another playthrough ten years later (and with much less time hehe).
Watch Dogs 1 really was game-changing. How intractable the world is makes it fun to even walk around. Wish it was worked on longer originally and had more content but mods work
I just got this game on my PS3 and I gotta say that I love it! I love how it takes place in Chicago since this is the city my family has called home since 1904.
@@mrrooster4876 True, it was scaled down in all the neighborhoods surrounding downtown, but the atmosphere was pretty spot on to me. I think The Loop was the only part of Chicago they could focus their detailed efforts on, given the state of gaming tech back then.
@@omarmainuddin7251 Sure it's scaled down, but it's also massively inaccurate. I lived in downtown for 2 1/2 yrs. Just a few years removed from that when this came out. They actually took places and moved them to entirely different sides of the city or different neighborhoods. I was so excited when the game dropped because they advertised it as a scaled down replica. It's far from that. The first time I played it I was massively disappointed because of this.
I always loved Watch Dogs from the pure fact that it had one of the best cities in gaming. Chicago felt like a truly lived in city, and the attention to detail was mind-blowing. I'd sometimes just walk down back alleys and take in the ambiance and was just blown away at the time.
I played every title from the series and Watchdogs 1 and Bad Blood addon were my favorites from the beginning. The story, the dark atmosphere. Grasping topics about creeps and crimes using the web. And the hideout mechanic. I always wanted to have my own network of places to chill out irl :)
Loved when the game came out I was watching a show called Persons of Interest and it made me super excited for this game because they gave the same vibe I always take the time to replay the game every year.
I think the casual walking of Aiden with his hands in his pockets is still the best to this day. Ive never enjoyed so much just walking around in any other game so far.
I played this for the first time a couple years back. AutoHDR shines too. My only gripes are the elevated black levels. This game would be so much better with proper black levels.
I play Watch Dogs till this day with a couple graphical mods and I personally think it's the best Watch Dogs. It captures a great serious tone unlike the other ones. Everything about this game is great. Currently on my 4th playthrough.
I live in chicago now, and loved the first game so much that I bought, and wear often, a replica of Aiden's cool coat! Despite it's flaws, I loved the dark, serious feel of the first game. I think they oversteered into the silly and absurd for the second game, and then couldn't decide where to land for the third. The first game just felt so different from every other game world. I liked that for most of the story, Aiden's goal wasn't to destroy the system, it was to exploit it for his own ends. Rarely do we see a main character in a distopian world who isn't there to change the established order, but just to survive and thrive in that broken system. It made Aiden feel more real to me, like he was just some talented guy in this world, not the typical "main character" type we see so often.
@@Moskeeto yeah, I embroidered his emblem into a grey hat that I already had. During the pandemic, I'd go even further into the casual cosplay by adding a kerchief over my mouth!
To me, Watch Dogs has always looked gorgeous, ever since the first reveal and even on release. Never understood the backlash due to downgrades. I enjoyed the game all the way, and it was on a fat PS4, just to add. Glad to see the recognition it gets these days.
To me that was one of the final couch co-op games I loved playing with the boys. Awesome game and a lost tradition of the bros getting together for game nights.
Aside from the main gameplay, some of the digital trips are really great and not talked about enough imo. Alone in particular stands out as stellar to me; I used to put so many hours into it and would love to see how it looks with amped up lighting and graphics. Spider tank was a blast too
Same. Is there a mod which allows you to stay in Alone after clearing all the sections? I leave 1 section uncleared so I can roam around the rest of the areas soaking in the Inception limbo vibes.
2 was so good. The characters we're a little goofily written and I thought I'd hate them, but I loved them all and they were my best friends by the end. A little odd when a certain character had a tragedy, just a weird shift in tone (vengeance), but still a good story overall.
I remember they ran commercials all day on cable tv. The idea of invading people's lives make money and uncover secrets was so cool. I wish there were more webcam missions.
Great video Jake! Honestly, although somewhat disappointing, the intro to the game really hit for me. The concept of the game and the intro being at the baseball park was memorable, especially with the upgrade in hardware at the time. Going back, it is more underwhelming than I remember, but also really fun at times. Unfortunately, watchdogs 2 didn’t hit for me at all, and legions confirmed I don’t think I need to ever play a watchdogs game again.
What an excellent surprise of a video, I was pondering just last week whether I should finally start my first playthrough and what mods I should use, thanks guys! Would LOVE more videos like this where you highlight essential mods for older games. Might work well for the Bethesda games, maybe GTA, some racing games, some others :)
I remember a friend of mine had the game through Xbox Gold, staying up late completing the missions and getting into some trouble (or avoiding some) online. He played the single player couple of times and made Aiden Pearce references. It was fun and glad that the modding scene of the game exploded recently. I want to try these mods out
I really do hope they do another watch dogs back to routes, legion was fine but def nothing compared to 1&2, i would love to hack my way through Canada or France, especially France but as A SINGLE PERSON!!!!!!!
"goes back to roots" good luck on that one with Ubisoft. Loads of people have been waiting for R6 to go back to its roots for 20 years, have waited 10 years for a new splinter cell in hopes that it'll go back to it's roots, wanted a Ghost Recon like it originally was presented 25 years ago (even tho GR is in the best state it ever had been in after its identity crysis from 2006-2015 imo, it's just sad to see just how much potential they wasted which you can feel and notice all the time in Wildlands & Breakpoint - which in the end turns them into below average products). Ubisoft got good ideas, but they're unable to re-create what they originally did and the best that can happen is if a franchise gets discontinued - otherwise you just end up with an ever changing cycle of cash cows with the sole reminder of the franchise being the name.
I collect Hard Cover Guides and i have it for this game... it is damn near a dictionary thick! (Because there are so many ways to play it.) - im still a WD fan for sure.
Salutations for leaving the link of the mods in the desceiption !! For me I always liked the story and characters, though it shows its flaws upon repetition, Watch Dogs 1 would always have a place in my heart
I remember first finding out this game was coming out as though it was yesterday. It was OG G4's last year covering E3 (and existing actually). I'm at that age where you look back on 90% of pleasant memories with nostalgia through rose-colored glasses as it is.
Its been years... I lost this game and its "fun" memories... The story makes me sad how somone wants revange and how caracters die around him... It made me feel the dark side of life... I enjoyed the game so much because of the storys meaning. Thank you watch dogs for giving me this rare experiance.
I own this game on the 360 and Xbox One. Do I like it? Duh. I've actually been thinking of getting it on PC with the Living City mod but was waiting for a bit more coverage hence the beauty of you. Personally, though I own both 2 and Legion, I don't like them. I got both because of the first one; was disappointed with the story of two - while 1 was a bit bland, it was also serious. 2 wasn't whatsoever. Legion's trailers and first mission seem to be serious but that was just another illusion. Now, for various reasons, I completely distrust and loathe Ubisoft, so I doubt I'll buy any Watch_Dogs 3/4 based on trailer or gameplay reveal alone. Oddly, it wasn't 1's fake gameplay trailer that put me off, it was the narrative lies of the future games.
@@danielflanard8274 True. At this point we literally got a generation that curses Ubisoft for being trend chasers that destroy franchises since the mid 2000s while at the same time having a generation that thinks those titles are classics and it only started ~2015 - can't wait to see how that'll look like in 10 years, 3 generations bashing their heads in on that thematic will be interesting.

2:00 -- It wasn't just the graphics. It was subtle things. I remember geeking out with my brothers over the fact that he helped a woman out of her car, and the things she was yelling while she was in it. The betrayal was that the trailer made it feel like a real world, and it really didn't have the same feeling when it came out. There wasn't the same attention to detail, and it was very repetitive. The trailer made the NPCs feel like they weren't just NPCs.
I really enjoyed Watchdogs 2, even with the cringe get-along gang of protagonists. It was really fun. The screw-around factor was top tier, and thats what makes a game for me. If its fun to just goof around in the world, thats a solid game.
Nope, doesn't need it visuals still hold up which is kinda the whole point of this video, put remaster/remake resources into really old games which actually need it please
Wow how time flys, those old E3 days felt like a proper event to get excited about! 😊 Watch dogs definitely brought something different at the time which was appreciated.👌🏾 Thanks for the reminder Jake, imma dig this one out for sure..👍🏾
Watch Dogs: Legion just didn't hit the same notes as the first Watch Dogs which is sad and The story in Legion felt a bit all over the place, whereas the original had a more gripping and focused narrative and the mind of the fox that really pulled you in.
Bro. No hate, IDK what you are on about, on the game being bad, The game is incredible, when I first bought it in 2014, I remember I had a gt 740M with an i5-4200u, That I was able to play at the lowest setting at 720p, and completed the game, it was awesome, The game was really ahead of it,s time. Even today, the game feels updated and like it belongs in the moderan era, and this game can still squeeze my gtx 1650 off, which is insame.
I loved this game and the stealth. It also had something cool I wish all games had, it’s during gunfights enemies think you are in one position which allows you to sneak around them while they still look where they thought you were.
I played it earlier this year, after trying it last year while it initially was on PS Plus Extra. Eventually I bought the bundle with WD Legion, and I enjoyed it for sure - especially the Bad Blood DLC with T-Bone was slightly more varied in missions - and I would totally recommend it. Unfortunately on PS5 the resolution and fps are limited since it wasn't even updated for PS4 Pro.
I was 18 when the first game came out and I still remember how blown away I was by the graphics in the cinematic trailer. Even when the game didn't look that good in the end, that trailer was the first time I couldn't tell if what I was seeing was live action or animated and that sensation was something that stuck with me. One thing I also like about the franchise is how divided people are about which entry is the best. There really does not seem to be a general consensus after all these years. Funnily enough, Life is Strange, which started as a franchise a year later, is the same. People prefer the games based on what they value the most in a game. be it the plot, pacing, characters or mechanics. I personally like both WD1 and 2 and I like that they went with such opposing moods for them. I have yet to get around to Legion, but I do distinctly remember that it stood out to me that the person who spoke for the initial reveal actually got a tad political in his speech, talking about the state of Britain at the time and such. I figured such a big studio would keep their hands off of touching on those topics without the game as a layer inbetween. I liked that they didn't go all "This game is totally not political, nooope" a la David Cage.
I literaly have never played this game and just got a used copy today it was $5 but cost me nothing at gamestop because I get $5 a month in store as a pro member. So I just played like an hour of it today and it holds up really well

Knowing this, the story is so much better. I like the way the story went. So many people don't understand the objective of the story
Aiden is likeable as hell. To me anyways.
It has an incredibly compelling non sterotypical ending where the hero wins and the villain lose
The good thing is that even when Aiden wins ( he beat all the other bad guys) he still loses ( his sister and nephew left him)

Crazy how Cyberpunk repeated the SAME EXACT mistakes Watch Dogs lived through a generation prior

I live in London and Watch Dogs Legion was my comfort game during lockdown, seeing a city i'm so familiar with in digital format was quite amazing.
2 had the better gameplay, 1 had the best story, and 3... well yeah.
SAME I've replayed the whole game about 5 or 6 times and I never do that
Legion is just a spinoff title the same way Ubi releases FC Primal/FC Blood Dragon/AC Rogue. Im still holding up my hopes for Watch Dogs 3 if that ever comes true
What are the other 2?
@evieyak Alien: Isolation (one of my favorite games ever), and Fallout 4! Usually only like to complete a game once so it forces me to always try new games out there, but might be replaying Skyrim soon.

7:09 Story still bland??? WTF Dude??? This is a pretty great story. Not crazy interesting or anything, but it's nowhere close to BLAND

@@mono5401 Person of Interest launched first

will definitely watch thanks, WD1 is an awesome game and definitely one of my favourites
WD1 has that realistic, dark and gritty atmosphere that the other games lacked
i played this game without mods in an xbox 360
at the time i played it, i had never felt something like that from a game, the graphics, the story, the animations, the action gameplay, the lighting effects...
even without mods or something, this game hits different for me, even tho i had already played gta 5 before this just felt... better, in almost any way and for me its kinda sad that people think that this game only can be saved with mods because it isnt like that
im pretty sure that some people who played it with mods saw things and thought "oh wow, this mod really adds cool details" only to turn out that those details where already in the vanilla game, thats kinda sad.

I lived in Chicago when this game came out, maybe I'll re-visit it virtually again, even if it's scaled down
It's not even remotely accurate. They moved things all around the city out of place.
I counted down the days from reveal until release! I can’t believe it’s been 10 years already!😢

Man this is one of the best games I’ve ever played. This story would never be made today.

2 was so good. The characters we're a little goofily written and I thought I'd hate them, but I loved them all and they were my best friends by the end. A little odd when a certain character had a tragedy, just a weird shift in tone (vengeance), but still a good story overall.
Legion bored the hell out of me
I remember they ran commercials all day on cable tv.

Love watch dogs. I remember when I first loaded it up I thought my TV was glitching because of the flashing/grainy black/white title screen intro.

Recently finished WD1 and WD2
Bugs and gameplay can be fixed but a bad story can't, that's why this game succeeded in the end, it had a beautiful and emotional story.
So I just played like an hour of it today and it holds up really well
Just finished playing a heavily modded Watch Dogs 1 (made it look like from the trailer), and it was the best game for me. I agree with everything you said here. Hope they continued with Aiden's story.
The shipping container safehouses were so appealing and badass to me. Im still surprised nobody ever mentions it and how nobody decided to recreate it
I worked on Watch_Dogs.
That footage was carefully crafted on a triple Crossfire & SLI so 2 systems running maxed out.
It was amazing.
