Since I got my first San Martin.. I started to question if any of Seiko models really worth the cost, including this one!🤔 There's a very similar San Martin model to this but with Sapphire crystal, NH34 movement, beautiful finishing for about $300 and probably less if you can catch a sale.
They look nice but are a little pricey for having a pressed clasp and hollow links. At least the date is in negative and easier to see. Thanks for sharing them and have a wonderful day!
Argh, I'd be way more tempted if it had Sapphire over Hardlex. If you're going to make an adventure-y, utility-ish, field-y watch, you should spec it to be durable for such roles
I like this watch a lot and overall like your video, but... the numerals aren't lumed at all. Did you write your script without looking at the actual lume test?
I received mine last week and it’s superb - not as flashy as a Rolex and smaller than the Tudor. The bracelet is quite weighty and whereas it looks busy (Lego lol) I’d prefer it that way rather than one that looks like an Oyster design which would make this watch more of a homage/Rolex rip off. You’re absolutely right in noticing that the brushed bezel does reflect light and can make it not so immediately readable but the watch is superb and I’m delighted with it Cheers for another spot-on review MWC 👍
You can get a San Martin with similar design language but a screw in crown, sapphire crystal, solid end links, milled clasp, a thinner body and better luminescence for half the price.
Yes but a Seiko homage is okay, whereas a chinese homage is bad (for some reason I cannot fathom). Seiko just isn't good value for money compared to the best of the chinese homages. If i'm going to pay a premium for a Seiko then I expect a premium product.
@@S-Ltd1000 I constantly see Seiko on sale discounts so they don't hold value either. If i'm going to pay Seiko prices they could at least throw on a sapphire crystal given that EVERY chinese homage watch I own has them.
I nearly pulled the trigger on one of these last week but instead i held of and my cash went on ordering some watch called a MadHacker! I do like the new Seiko though
I prefer the earlier SSK's with the rotating bezel. The rotating bezel on the earlier SSK's allows you to track 3 time zones instead of two. Also the use of the rotating bezel makes the caller GMT movement much more functional when travelling. To the point that I don't mind travelling with it. I set the GMT hand to actual GMT and use the GMT numbers on the dial to track GMT. Then when I travel, I simply rotate the rotating bezel to the GMT offset of my destination and tell time using the GMT hand and bezel instead of the hour hand. With the earlier SSK I can literally travel anywhere with that watch without even unscrewing the crown. Less work than even adjusting a traveler GMT. With this watch, I have all the shortcomings of travelling with a caller GMT. The only advantage of this watch, IMHO is it's "field watch" vibe as opposed to the "dive watch" vibe of the earlier ones. Which really is only an advantage if you prefer field watches over divers.
4r34/ nh34 are pretty much everywhere at this point (homage, micro-brands etc.) ... you could almost say that last year was the year of the affordable GMT thanks to the NH34. The question I would ask is: Is this Seiko worth the price compare to what else is out there just to have the Seiko name on the dial? Some will of course say yes others no. However, the use of drilled lugs, no chance of a misaligned bezel (because it is fixed), color matched date wheel and nice bracelet + the Seiko name (without the Seiko name on it I would say NO) makes it worthy of consideration in my opinion. Still no signed crown, hollow end links, milled clasp (Seikos argument has always been that REAL divers used a pressed clasp - but this isn't a diver) and hardlex crystal (again Seiko's argument for this is diving related - and this isn't a diver) as items to gripe about.
Hello Russ,I am a fans of yours in Malaysia and I really like your creativity and design. Is this watch still available for purchase in March or April? Because I just bought the G-shock 40th Anniversary 5040 and I don’t have any budget.
So they made one similar to this and released it within the last several months but the retail was nearly $2000… This one is much more reasonable and it looks great. Pressed clasp though? Hollow end links? And why not save 1/2 mm and cover up the pedestrian movement. Are they proud of their unregulated undecorated movement that has a plus/ minus variance +40 /-20 sec per day? This watch will probably come down to $300 or just a little over and if that price I’ll pick it up!
6:00 The gmt hand does not move in 30 minute increments, but in 1 hour increments indicated by the bezel numbers. This is unfortunate for those commuting to/living in half hour timezones like India but i am not sure there is a mechanical movement that can handle half hour timezone discrepancies! Very nice move from Seiko learning from Chinese Homage makers but incorporating their own existing models. Long bow comparison to Explorer 2 😉. Agree regards to the date window Russell. I wish manufacturers would stop putting this complication in every single watch they design! Hangover from the past IMO! Cheers
Not at all my friend. It’s just my enthusiasm! I speed me up to 120% on those bits. Hasn’t changed in 2 years! I reckon you’ve sped the show up ! That’s insane if you did!!!
The bracelet is only exclusive for now as it's clearly not been "made for it" - my watchOCD immediately spotted the mismatch with the case brushing so straight onto rubber if I wanted the watch.
Just recently received the Seiko snkp21j1 and wish the bracelet was more like this ssk023. But glad I got some great nato straps for it. Really liking this seiko, lets wait a little bit and see if the price drops
I would love this as a Alpinist model with Sapphire Crystal and 6r movement. And yes I understand that would be at a higher price point but say at around $850 USD I think it would be a knockout.
I really like this SSK. Another great addition to the revamped Seiko 5 line. The price is much more accessible than the Alpinist GMT and as you said, if it follows the trend of the other Seiko 5s, that price will likely be discounted in the coming months. Great show as always MWC!
A pressed clasp at £400 is a massive turn off on an otherwise nice looking watch. If Steeldive can stick a milled clasp on a £60 watch. I’m sure a huge company like Seiko could make a better effort.
I have the steal model since 2013, it's a very good watch for the price. It is very thin, it's light, has small lug to lug, so it can wear perfectly for small wrist, the bracelet is solid and comfortable! It's solar, radio controlled, has the legal time feature, calendar, stopwatch, timer, sapphire crystal.. only 5atm water resistance though. But in the end it's a real deal!!
O-kay: I suppose if Seiko hadn't come out with the initial SSK GMTs (and me ending up buying the SSK 003), this would be rather tempting. Otherwise, mad-cool.

Great show as always. I think it more than semi resembles the Explorer 2… But hey, if you can’t get an explorer 2 and want the same aesthetic, then why not!
Long bow comparison to Explorer 2 😉. Agree regards to the date window Russell. I wish manufacturers would stop putting this complication in every single watch they design! Hangover from the past IMO! Cheers
The voice pitch is higher in this video than any other video. Anyone notice this? I hope it gets fixed.
Love the watch mate !!and thanks for reviewing it :)
Great looking watch. If it ever gets down to near £300, i am all over it.
Just recently received the Seiko snkp21j1 and wish the bracelet was more like this ssk023. But glad I got some great nato straps for it. Really liking this seiko, lets wait a little bit and see if the price drops
The World* demands a Seiko MWC Collab!
* By the World, I mean myself and all the other Madmen out there!
Hahahahahaha I have got Brian Mays hair!!!! No reason is there?!?!?
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR
Better hair! Much better!!
And waaay better taste!!!
I have both variants, only because I couldn’t make my mind up, plus a 20% discount comes in handy at my favourite cheaper watch shop.
Seiko already did this years ago with the SARG009 and SARG011 (for the classic Explorer), sadly discontinued of course 😢
I'm definitely getting ine. Very Cool watch!😎
Glad to have your take on it. I like it for sure, and you can already find it with some discount. Seiko is certainly starting off strong.
I would love this as a Alpinist model with Sapphire Crystal and 6r movement. And yes I understand that would be at a higher price point but say at around $850 USD I think it would be a knockout.
I learned my lesson with the 5kx GMTs. Waiting 6 months for prices to drop.
Yes, the original ssk's are below £350 now.
I have no idea how you can’t mention hollow links as a negative at this price. The pressed clasp is trash but we expect that from Seiko.
Nice watch, i think the white dial is the best one
There's no excuse for pressed clasps over $200.
You can buy milled clasps for $10 anywhere.
I really like this SSK. Another great addition to the revamped Seiko 5 line. The price is much more accessible than the Alpinist GMT and as you said, if it follows the trend of the other Seiko 5s, that price will likely be discounted in the coming months.
Great show as always MWC!
Well, for sportiness it isn't a MadHacker now is it! But very much like the new Seiko - thanks to a great review! Cheers, Russ.
Great looking watches. Deception for me. Great value for money
Does it come with a spew bag??
There is a white dial version: SBSC009 only in Japan at the moment
A pressed clasp at £400 is a massive turn off on an otherwise nice looking watch. If Steeldive can stick a milled clasp on a £60 watch. I’m sure a huge company like Seiko could make a better effort.
I have the deploy and love it even got mine with Origami and nice note from the Japanese shop that I pre ordered from. Cool watch indeed
mate could you review Casio Lineage LCW-M100TSE-1AER
I have the steal model since 2013, it's a very good watch for the price. It is very thin, it's light, has small lug to lug, so it can wear perfectly for small wrist, the bracelet is solid and comfortable!
It's solar, radio controlled, has the legal time feature, calendar, stopwatch, timer, sapphire crystal.. only 5atm water resistance though. But in the end it's a real deal!!
Wait, are you sure the links are hollow?
I think I prefer the specs on the CW Sealander GMT. However it’s more than double the price. Not bad all things considered, great review.
love that watch!
Really like this one. But if I get it it will be from Japan because I want Made in Japan on the dial
love the dial but it’s just not big enough for my large 8” wrist
Very nice watch 👍 I really like the look of it plus size. Drilled lugs are cool, like my Hamilton 👍
Always a fun video. Cheers
I appreciate Seiko's consistency that despite having a fixed bezel, a number of these are still misaligned.
I agree with the wife! Would definitely take off the fancy looking bracelet and put something like a black cordura...
O-kay: I suppose if Seiko hadn't come out with the initial SSK GMTs (and me ending up buying the SSK 003), this would be rather tempting. Otherwise, mad-cool.
The white dial is brilliant but why Japan only 🙈
Great review 👍
Only yesterday bought a Steeldive. But this one would be nice, even at it's price tag... ... but oh no, hardlex instead of sapphire glas!
