  • 2023 was a fantastic year for GMTs with the release of the Longines Spirit Zulu Time in the much anticipated 39mm size, the all new Longines HydroConquest GMT, and my favorite Seiko Marine Master 200 GMT SPB383. I have loved GMT watches for years after owning the likes of the Rolex Explorer II, Tudor Black Bay GMT, Tudor Black Bay Pro, Grand Seiko SBGM221, Zodiac Super Sea Wolf GMT Sherbet, and more.
Another GMT Seiko released in 2023 was the awesome Alpinist GMT SPB377 and SPB379. I’ve been wearing my SPB379 for the past couple months, I’ve been loving it more and more. But now in 2024, with the arrival of the Seiko 5 Field GMT SSK023 and SSK025, the vaunted Alpinist GMT has some competition at a far lower price. When I reviewed this watch i enjoyed it but wondered whether or not its worth buying over the Alpinist GMT
So in this video, I’m going to compare the Alpinist GMT against the cheaper Field GMT by going over all the aspects of the watch: dial, case, etc, giving points in 8 categories, 6 worth 10 points and 2 worth 5 to see how these two seiko adventure watches stack up against each other. Is the Alpinist GMT worth the higher price or should you just save some money and get the Field GMT? Lets find out.

Well the Seiko 5 did really well in your comparison considering its almost 1/3 the price of the Alpinist.

Excellent video, brilliant presentation. I have the Alpinist SPB155J, can't remember the last letters but the green one. Lol. It's a beautiful watch but I'll be honest, for me the Alpinist GMT just doesn't work. Even though the Field has that inner numbering, (which can track a 3rd time zone btw) the Alpinist looks more crowded and less legible. They've taken a watch that was never designed to be a GMT and stuck a GMT hand on it. It didn't start out as a GMT watch and it's very obvious that it didn't. From a design viewpoint the Field is a superior GMT, the Alpinist is a bit of a mess. Just my opinion of course !

Thanks for the video 👌 The Alpinist costs double the price of the field so it's clear that the quality is better.

Sure thing! And yeah the prices are very different but it just goes to show how much value the field GMT offers!

Not normally a fan of x vs y format because it doesn’t reflect how most collectors focus in on a watch. More likely a collector is drawn to a watch then contemplates subtle variations of that model like colorway and strap vs bracelet. This however felt like a real exercise in what a collector might weigh unlike most of the grossly dissimilar watches that are compared just so the content creator can squeeze two brands into the title and draw more clicks. Very well done!

I don't own either watch and I've yet to see them in the flesh. My gut feeling was the Alpinist though, I have the non GMT Prospex Alpinist green dial and the case design is wonderful so I guess I would go for the Alpinist GMT but as I said I've not seen either. I don't have a caller GMT watch and my travelling is unlikely to require a travel GMT so much so I may well look at both of the watches in the review. Another top video TWI.

Wow, that silver/white dial version of the Alpinist GMT is gorgeous. I had the classic SARB alpinist a few years back but it didn't click with me, maybe it's time for another shot?

Hi, I love your videos! Do you know if the SSK023 is available in the U.S. now? Seiko's website says April 2024 but it seems like all the TH-camrs already have it. I wish the SBSC009 was available here.

I own the SSK003 GMT and love that watch. With these two options I’d pick the Seiko 5 over the Alpinist . I’ve never been a fan of the Seiko Alpinist. The look and design of the field Seiko 5 GMT and that awesome bracelet is a winner for me.

Great comparison. How does this Alpinist stack up against your Navigator Timer?

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Glad you enjoyed the comparison! And actually despite the Alpinist GMT and the Navigator Time being much closer in price and specs, they are thankfully very different. The grey dial, rotatable bezel, and bracelet of the navigator timer really set it apart and and make it more unique. However the black dial and the "Alpinist experience" of the Alpinist GMT is special in its own way too. If I had to choose between the two then I think it would the Navigator Timer would have the edge but not by too much

Can u please suggest which one is better among Automatic with Manual vs Mechanical winding??
    & Whats the difference?
Seiko 5 deploy is Automatic with Manual Winding still it's written Mechanical in the Name..

Great review bud, however, Unless you wear the GMT everyday and it's your one and only watch i don't see a point to an automatic/mechanical GMT watch. Personally, i would love a quartz GMT for a guy that swaps out watches often.
Hoping that seiko puts their quartz GMT movement into some watches other than the Sumo Diver.

Glad you enjoyed it! My bracelet is one made for the Seiko Alpinist. In Strapcode's site menu, under Seiko, go to the SARB section and it'll be under the Alpinist.
In short any bracelet that is compatible with the SARB017, the original green dial Alpinist, will work on this Alpinist GMT which opens up a lot of options

Why you compare two different watches? They have different calibers, pressures and levels? That the same as compare BMW 1 and BMW 5. Alpinist has double price because movement better in three times, pressure twice and quality twice and he has compass. Are they worts more points?
