    @8:00 The outer 24-hour track doesn't duplicate the inner track. That's obvious at a glance. The GMT hand has to travel at half the speed of the hour hand so they need two different scales.

    Thank you Shane for another great review. I think the 0-24 outer track is for the GMT hand to follow as it indicates the 24 hours per revolution. The 13-24 inner track is for the 12 hour hand to show the PM hours of a 24 hour day.

      That is right, I was gonna say the same.....But amyway, I agree with Shane that it is not necessary. It could have a cleaner dial without the 13-24 track.
      Although it doesn't really bother me......

    I‘ve never had any issues with Seiko hardlex. My SKX013, which I‘ve been wearing for many years, has zero scratches on the crystal. Don‘t know about a domed one though.

    Nice looking design. Years ago I would troll Seiko 5 Finder and other sites and then go looking on eBay. Some of those older models are truly excellent and I do like the old 37mm cases.
    Although my collecting activity slowed, I still "maximize" certain checkboxes as appreciation. Never bought a Turtle but got the Land Tortoise ... still love the design, it's smaller and mine was on sale. Insane value, along with their totally random use of sapphire for it. Some of my favorite watches have acrylic crystals. You might say I prefer that ... NOTHING is as glare-free as a (scratch-free) acrylic crystal.
    My first GMT was also my first batman and Timex Q ... everything I own seems to be a cliche of some other reference LOL. It gets worse. I like lightweight watches for being lightweight and the heavy ones for being heavy. My Lunar Pilot needs a battery, because of course it does; the 262kH movement is a hungry beast.

    Great review Shane, handsome watch. I am confused by your point on the inner digits and bezel being redundant. As the inner digits 13 - 24 are 24hour "military" hour (PM) markers and the bezel has the 1-24 digits GMT hour markers for the GMT hand that goes around only once in a day. I agree that this complicates reading the watch quickly and the overall design but for me it makes the GMT feature much easier to use.

    Great review, it is a good looking watch, however, I agree the Japanese have kept the best to themselves, the white dial is a stunner. The only complaint I have is the thickness, it is probably due to the display back as I have an nh34 San Martin with 100m WR that is only 12.5mm thick.

    Never scratched a hardlex, even when used as a dive backup. This is now available in Turkey and I ordered the black dial yesterday. I was procrastinating between it and the white one, when simultaneously I got an Ali Express deal for the new version NH34 Corgeut explorer homage with coins, and 2 store discounts for $62 !! İronically it has a sapphire crystal, fully solid bracelet and even glide lock adjustment! It scratched the itch for a white dial! Though I don't expect it to be perfect, for that price I couldn't pass it up !

    • @bbwt9991
      @bbwt9991 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think it's arriving in Germany today, maybe has by now ! You'll be happy with the Corgeut. I received the 3002-2 version a week ago and the quality is very good. Nice bracelet too. There's a lottery with the case back though. You might get a display case back or a solid if you don't specifically ask. I got the solid one as the NH34 won't win any beauty contests. Everything lined up perfectly including the GMT hand. The crown is nice and smooth. The lume isn't Seiko level but it's better than a lot of Chinese brands. You also got a great deal, I paid €75 !

    I've seen so many watch reviewers make the same mistaken criticism regarding the 24 hour time scale on the dial. You can make an argument to leave it off to make the dial less busy, but you can't make the argument to leave it off because it's redundant since there is a 24 hour scale on the bezel. The 24-hour scale on the dial is military time aligned with the regular hands. The 24-hour scale on the bezel is GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and aligned to the GMT hand. That's why at, say, 10 o'clock, the 24-hour time on the dial is 22 for 22:00 military time, but on the 24-hour GMT time scale on the bezel it's 20, which would be 8 o'clock. If your GMT time was actually 10'oclock, the GMT hand would be at 11/23 on the dial scale. Could all of you watch reviewers please get together and figure this out.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I got the fact that it's a 24 hour scale for the hour hand. My thought process was more along the lines of if you really need it. Considering you could just use the GMT hand to see military time anyway. Since if you are traveling the GMT hand should be set to wherever you are at.
      However in retrospect that argument falls completely apart if you're using it to track a 2nd time zone you are not in, and you still want to know military time locally. So yeah, not completely redundant. However, I still think it would be a cleaner overall design without it.

    • @mjf70
      @mjf70 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Right. Since most people use the dial markers for the time zone they are in and the GMT for another time zone they want to keep track of, the 12 and 24 hour dial scale is for use where you are. Doesn’t bother me at all on a field watch but if it did, I’d just buy a different GMT watch. People seem to want every watch to be made exactly for their tastes and I find criticisms based on that kind of daft. It’s different, however, if you just say it’s not my taste.

    Held one a few weeks ago at my local Seiko/Grand Seiko AD here in Canada.
    I was hoping to love this model, macros in videos all looked spectacular from the raised indices and textured dial. In hand feel is where it all fell apart, the case finishing felt poor, almost sharp in comparison to an SNK809 and you still have a jangly bracelet. The matte black dial is almost too flat or too grey. I really wish they would have had the white dial on display but I guess we may never see it. Knock off with regional releases Seiko, we're all tired of it, same for the never ending limited editions.
    One point to Seiko, they brushed this bezel from the center outward where as Grand Seiko keeps ruining most if their watches with a vertical pattern.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sure. Most in that price range will be from good microbrands that will use the same movement
      For example check out the RZE ascentus. One of my favorites in that price range. Full titanium.
      th-cam.com/video/H-ZLjDoHJ5A/w-d-xo.html
      Although are you looking for something that's more like a dive watch. That has a rotating bezel. Or more of one like this video, where it's steel and fixed?
      Another place to look is some of the Chinese AliExpress brands. If your ok with less original designs you can find some for $200-$350. Again with the same movement but with a sapphire crystal. In general id recommend San Martin over any of the other brands.
      Just be a little cautious when watching some other channels that focus only on AliExpress watches. Some of them don't spend a lot of time with the watches and are more just trying to get affiliate sales.

    I think this model is actually SBSC011 which is the JDM model. Its numerals are actually white, and actual SSK023K (international model) have a slight greenish tint (which I think doesn't look as nice). The sizing of the fonts as well seems a little different. I also have seen the SSK023K shipped with a sticker that says 'Movement in Malaysia and Made in China' - would this be of a lesser value, compared to a JDM model?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, this one is from Japan originally. I didn't know there was any difference with the international model. Strange, usually there isn't. I'll have to look into that more.
      As for it being worth more, yes usually the JDM models are. Which was the whole J vs K model debate. Usually, they are pretty much the same, but collectors always prefer the J / JDM versions. So prices are always a little more. But again, functionally they are the same. (Or at least usually are).

    I've been the outcast in every review of this, saying that the design is a big miss, seems more rushed to fill the gap in this line with a GMT, rather than a well thought one. What's really bad thought, are the hands, kind like a match of existing (field "5") and some left overs (GMT hand comes from old divers, second hand is totally off at proportions, as all are!).
    Then the bracelet. Is it a tease to Explore's fans? "Hey look! Kind of Jubilee... something Rolex will never give you"?!!
    I'm not a fan of the Explorer anyway, honestly though, i expected something more from Seiko here.
    I'll end saying it's a homerun indeed, but at their own field (pun intended!), not the other (winning) side...

      I get what you're saying. Always bugs me when I hear a luxury watch referred to as "entry level", but it really just means entry into something specific. In this case, talking more GMTs.
      Now terms like "affordable", "mid-range", and "luxury", can be more specific. And here, $450-$500 is the top end of what I consider to be affordable. When I started the channel 5 years ago and you were to ask me that I would of said the top end was around $350. But price jumps and inflation over the last few years have sucked.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bgieho Well from what I've heard the screw down part doesn't actually add much to the water resistance. It's a common misconception. Most of the WR is coming from the O-ring / Seals.
      The screwdown crown is more to prevent you from accidentally pulling it out, or fiddling with it while underwater. Which can cause and issue. Which is why there are a fair amount of 100m watches out there without a screwdown crown.

      I would say they are covered, not promoted. As far as I know, Seiko isn't sponsoring anyone here on TH-cam. Regardless, they are covered a lot because there is a lot of interest in their watches. I get far more views from Seiko videos than I do from almost any other brand.

      After reading this I noticed this SSK023K model seems to be the one watch that many watch enthusiasts /influencers have covered and feature in a video. It's by far the most popular in recent times. Any idea as to why that is the case?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fungorillaDo you mean in terms of Seiko 5 Field GMTs? Or just Seiko reviews recently?
      With regard to the Seiko 5 Fields specifically, there were only 3 models released, and one of those was a JDM. So out of the remaining two, this is the most normal, and the one most people would be interested in seeing.
      Out of all the more recent Seikos. Well the Field GMTS are most interesting out of the more affordable recent Seiko 5 releases. I know there have been a lot of GMTS released recently, but you got to also remember that 4 years ago the idea of a Seiko GMT for $400 was crazy talk.

      @@RelativeTime this model in particular has got a lot more reviews than any other watches on TH-cam. It has only been released a couple of months since its release, and there are tonnes of content about it. I guess as you say there is much interest and it being priced more affordably makes it a more attractive proposition.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@fungorillaIt was also released in Japan a few months earlier than internationally too. So they were available online if you knew about it and where to look. In fact Dave (Just the Watch) whos in Japan, told me when he ordered one and I asked if he would get me and ship it to me. So I was working under the impression I had a lead over everyone and could take my time getting it out. But about a week after I got it, the reviews were already starting to come out.
      Because one of the problems with a lot of reviewers these days (at leat as I see it) is that many don't spend a lot of time with the watches before making a review. Some turn the camera on as soon as they get it and ramble whatever comes to mind. One of my biggest pet peeves is when I see a review where the bracelet isn't even sized. They just hold it up to their wrist.
      The thing about Seiko videos, is they get views. Even though most of us know there are better priced and better speced watches out there, a Seiko video will typically far outperform any of those. As much as we complain about them, people are always interested in Seiko. For example, the last NH34 GMT I covered before this was the Phobois Wavemaster GMT. It got about 8k views, which is pretty good. Most microbrands these days get around 3-4k. But this Seiko's got 43k views, and that's with all the competition.
