Today Leica announced a new variation of the popular Q3 with a new lens - a 43mm APO-Summicron f/2. Every camera in the Q series to date has used the 28mm f/1.7 Summilux making this the first new lens on a Q in 9 years.
Just like the 28mm, the new 43mm features incredible image quality and the "macro" mode switchable on the lens ring. The new lens is outstanding with excellent corner to corner sharpness and of course it is an Apochromatic design which increases resolution and eliminates chromatic aberration. The body is identical to the original Q3 except for the crop modes adapting to the longer focal length. The lens features optical image stabilization and crop modes are now 43mm, 60mm, 75mm, 90mm, 120mm and 150mm.

I won't name the others I think that would be unfair, but if you watch this you won't need them. Well done Ted and thanks for doing this. Regards Jake Everyman.

Maybe by the time the Q4 comes out I'll be willing to pay that much for a fun camera that can actually compete with the best options on the market, beyond the Leica brand, feel, and color.

I learned photography on a 45mm-equivalent lens (Sigma 30mm f1.4 on a Sony A6300 body) and for years that's how I saw the world. Fast-forward to now and I always want wider. 28mm is probably my favorite focal length right now but I also think that the average viewer understands a photo better when it's closer to 50mm. So I guess the question that the Q3 variants raise is: Who are you shooting for?
Amazing video as always, Ted! Cheers!

Great that Leica made this camera, but I''d still take my Q3 28mm over 43mm for the greater versatility from wider angles of view, but the crop ability of the 60mp sensor. I find the Q3 28mm great for street photography.

Ted, another solid video! You touched on the fact that APO f/2 is about as ”bocalicious” as an f/1.4, though with a slightly wider focus area (I.e. easier to not miss focus) and easier to achieve 3D pop, both things a lot of people don’t realize about APO lenses. The APO is also sharper. But the biggest game changer for me are the advantages of APO colours. I know your favourite lens on earth is the Summilux 50mm asph but the colours out of APO lenses are more vibrant, more film-like, more Kodak. I don’t know why this gets talked about so little! And then, there is the thing you love about Summilux lenses: sharp in the middle, soft on the perimeters. I concede you that. But I would rather have a lens where I can focus an object on the perimeter (like your wooden bridge photo) just as well. And not just the center. Just lock focus on your subject through the center and then recompose the frame contents. Of course, I could be wrong about THIS APO as I haven’t tried one. I’d love if you could confirm or deny any of my assumptions above. Love your output and energy, sir! Marko in Vancouver

    • @theartofphotography
      @theartofphotography  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Agree to all points. I’ve been using the 50 APO a lot recently. It’s amazing. I just know the lux better inside and out. I know exactly what it will do. Take that lens off the table though and APO lenses are the best. Zeiss Otus are amazing but Leica at one stop less make it in the size of a “new” potato.

I would have been very tempted by the Q3 43 last year when I bought my Q3, as my first camera had a 40 mm lens I’ve always more at home in the low 40s than either 35 mm or 50 mm. However, I don’t think I can justify owning both a Q3 (28) and a Q3 43. Maybe I need to try harder and the rationalisation will happen.

I'm one of the people for whom the 28mm was too wide for a 'do everything' lens, so 43mm is great for me. I'm a little disappointed by the quote unquote 'macro' mode though. I wasn't exactly expecting 1:1 but this is barely 1:5 - calling it 'macro' is frankly a bit cheeky!
My all time favourite standard lens is the zuiko 50mm f2 macro (which goes to half life sized close focussing) and I thought this may be a modern successor, but not quite. This is ofc all academic cause I can't afford it lmao but nonetheless, glad to see Leica branching out and happy for those who will love this.

Hasselblad has been using 80 mm on 6*6 for years which is 42/43mm on 35mm equivalent , its great to see the other quality camera manufacturer embrace this focal length ... as a hassle/leica film shooter 80mm and 35mm lengths mostly , 42/43 is a very balance length and a great alternative to 35mm or 50mm you get the best of both ..

If anyone is curious, the original Q3 28mm will give an equivalent depth of field of about f/2.6 when cropped to 43mm. Not that huge of a difference for subject isolation, but that APO lens seems worth it!
I’m definitely going to buy this camera, but I do think the AF is sluggish compared to competitors. On the other hand, Leica have a focus-by-wire that actually feels good.

Leica is basically doing what Ricoh did with the GRIII and GRIIix and it's a very good idea. If I had to live with a single focal length, which I obviously can't, it wouldn't be a 28mm, it's way too wide. I used to have a Leica X1 and the 35mm equivalent was ok, as long as I could walk close enough to the subject.

This is my dream Q as 50mm is my favorite focal length and I like shooting at 40mm too. I think the choice of 43mm is just great. The only quirk is, that they don't offer "frame lines" for 50mm. It is quite an omission to skip this classical focal length and go for the 60 instead. I still am rather going to update my M10 to a M12 instead (when it arrives), but this Q would be the one fixed lens camera I would love to live with. Fun fact: this is exactly the same FOV as the 55 on the digital Hasselblad cameras, which is also the sensor diagonal.

I've been looking for a street photography camera that I could carry with me anywhere and anytime without it being a burden of its size. Not sure this is small enough and the price certainly puts it out of my reach. For now. I'd agree with the camp that 28mm is too wide and 43mm could work. For now, I'm almost certainly going to get Leica's D-Lux 8. Not nearly the same league as this camera. But it's superior to phone images and the pricing is fantastic. Also happy that when looking at the images, they reminded me greatly of my Lumix Leica f/1.7 lenses for my Panasonic G9 cameras....

I'm not attempting to compare Pentax to Leica, or worried that the Pentax has no camera body attached. I'm merely pointing out that Pentax put out a 43mm hi-def/hi-quality lens a LONG time ago under precisely the same rational that Leica has used this focal length now. Ted, thanks for the review. Can we download the DNGs somewhere for pixel peeping on the Mac?
The 1/2000 is a little bit disappointing. 1/4000 should be possible and it’s also no stacked sensor.

Leica made a huge mistake with the 43mm. Before you had no choice but now you are start thinking of the limitations of having only one lens. And which mm is the best.

And one other question. If you could choose one camera and one lens, would this be it? If not, what would it be?

    Nice preview!
I wanna see how it compares to the original Q3, because honestly, aside from the APO, cropping into the 28 would still give you a very high resolution file (even too much still) and roughly the same equivalent aperture. However, you cannot crop down, and I think this is why they chose 28 in the first place. But eh, I do landscape and everyday life, so I'm biased. It just seems that they added a very big constraint which make this camera less flexible in usage, and for that price, in my opinion, that's very hard to justify.

Hello! Thank you for this useful video. I have a question that some might find weird but... is there any decent wide-angle converter that one could use occasionally with the Q3 43? I mean, I definitely prefer the 43mm as a fix lens, but I would love to have the possibility to shoot a wide-angle for landscapes if needed. I doubt that this even exists, but who knows… Thank you!

Hey, I like your thoughts on photography. Only critique is that Boca is a place in Florida and bokeh (bo-ke) is how it’s pronounced. There’s confusion amongst a lot of people about this, coming from a well known photography channel it’s a good opportunity to get it right. Cheers.

Not rich enough... ;-I However, I love what Leica is doing, and, that it managed to keep going, no matter what! I always wondered why so few manufacturer went with the "true diagonal" based focal length! I would've thought, more had come up with campaign slogans like "the lens that sees the world like your eyes".

  • @NeonShores
    @NeonShores 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

Leica really just needs to do what Panasonic is attempting with the S9. Just make a compact Q body, make it L mount, and release the 28mm and 43mm lenses in L mount too.
The Q could have an electronic shutter and I'm sure theres a way to update existing L mount cameras to use leaf shutter lenses.

I am an old school person, habituated with rangefinder focused M6 and presently M10. I am comfortable with the Elmarit and Sumicron, can’t think of Sumilux. The typical digital pin sharp focus lacks the mood of my B&W image. The 43mm lens sounds interesting and zoom mechanism. May be one day I will visit Leica Store in Delhi, India and experience the new model of Leica. Still I love to rotate the focusing barrel or gaze focused picture.

It looks like a really cool camera, BUT (big butt but) I've decided that new Leicas are essentially for eccentric rich folks who can afford to spend WAY more than they need to to get a camera that fulfills their needs. Leicas are wonderful in some ways (I guess), but so weird in other ways. They're almost like a Lamborghini LM002. What the hell is the point of that for 99.999% of us? It's fine. It's cool. No skin off my nose.

Except that 7k is not THAT crazy for the professional classes and amortises over the lifetime (probably longer than the owner?) of the camera and lens.
There is quite a large professional and yes semi pro or wealthy population who would comfortably consider paying that. It's way cheaper than a fully electric car or super car, limousine, yacht etc.
But, you're right, I certainly can't afford one but Leica certainly looks to be filling a gap in their range

@@paulbuckingham4676 You're right that $7000 isn't crazy for a pro camera, but that's for a pro camera with broader capabilities that is part of a whole system that will allow you to do almost anything you can imagine, not a fixed lens street/travel camera. They must have their appeal, though, or they wouldn't build them. Just not my cup o' Joe.

Is the lens a true 43mm or 40mm, on the q3 28mm the images are more like a 26mm is it the same case here with the 43mm or Leica has fixed that.

43mm lens was first introduced by Pentax, but I guess this focus length has never been widely and socially exposed to younger generations until leica made the new Q3😂 Ricoh and Pentax really like innovating thins like this, yet have never receives the monetary returns they seek

In a few months there will be more of this model in the used and secondhand market then the original 28 mm model. People buying into a camera with a fixed 43 mm lens will soon realise how it restricted. The camera really is.
