On a classic car forum, a new poster was causing quite a stir. He claimed to have bought a Corvette convertible, but his observations about the vehicle didn’t quite add up. Slowly, the bigger picture began to emerge, however, and the close-knit community realized that they might just have a real treasure on their hands.

Memories...those days of dragging with open headers, adjusting points or changing the jet sizes in carburetors. I also remember watching my friend climb out of a 1970s Vette and burn the side of his bare leg on the still hot side exhaust pipe.

I actually have photos of a very very similar looking Vette Drag Racing at a couple of Different Tracks we raced at in Nebraska back in the 70's . We raced B/MP Class back when they still had Modified Production Cars as its own Class. We ran a Camaro SS with a 427.
The Corvette we saw around that one summer ( I will look up what year) had no name on the side but looked remarkably the same right down to the Cragar Wheels and the deck lid was blue and Stars and the stripe on the snorkel hood was more rectangular shape with equal amounts of red on each side. The guy who was hauling and driving it had like a 60's model Chevy Cab and sleeper cab with a Car Hauler on the back as was very popular back in the late 60's and 70's.
He was with his Wife we assumed, every time we saw him and we think he was from Wisconsin or Michigan ? Maybe Like I said it was in the mid 70's.
I know the car had 4spd Muncie because he sheared off some cluster teeth in Qualifying and bought a complete new Gear Set from a guy we knew that ran a Chevelle SS 396 4 spd in Super Stock class.
Anyway all of us pitted around him helped him R & R the Transmission and because that's what I did for a living at the time (built standard transmissions for a Transmission Shop) I pulled it down, he and his wife cleaned out all the metal shards and I put the complete gear set, and new cluster gear in and out it back together. ( The Gear set, Sliders and mainshaft were all hardened & Face Plated made for Drag Racing ) and it worked flawlessly and was a little quicker than his old set up.
We saw him at Bandamiere at Morrison Colorado later that Summer for a big NHRA Race and he was still running the trans I built and had never touched it since we put it back in. That was at Kearney Dragway @Kearney, Nebraska back when it was just an abandoned chunk of Airport Runway with a little tower and a little camper trailer and a Christmas Tree.
Oh those were the dying days of Drag Racing.
We never saw them again after that one summer. I wonder what ever happened to that Corvette it was a really nice looking and well built Race Car. Who ever built it knew what they were doing.

To make a long story short . Its an old dragcar. Setup early 70s style. the C-MP on the windows stands for C-Modified production. That is the class it was running in . If it was competitive in that class, it would have been turning 9's in the quarter mile. It would have a straight axle rearend, and most of them had high winding smallblocks with 4 speeds.

wow, unbelievable...i remember in the late 70’s at a dealership in Shreveport then named “RoundtreeCadillac&Old’s” they had a 454ci Corvette i don’t know what year but it had the chrome bumper nose. the entire car was painted in a waving American flag w/ super wide tires around it w/ identical Ketstone or Crager 5spoke chrome mags on it. my dad cranked it because then they would leave the keys in the car. he knew everything about that the car had a big ass cam in it and sounded like thunder coming out the side exhaust. alot of chrome under the hood w/ electric fans. the car was beautiful & badazz at the same time. i could’ve been no more than 4or5 but it was one those moments you never forget. thanks for sharing this post

Wow! That is an amazing find. I had a child's one of 3 edition of a candy apple red corvette in the late 1960's. It was given to my Dad by the company. I don't recall why. I was only 3 or 4 years old. But I got to drive it in 9ur extremely large hall of a business building. Other children beat me up so my Dad sold it. It had been an awesome summer though, driving that thing. I find this totally believable be cause companies were not so cheap with their promotional advertising back then. It had been a mini version of what would be coming out the following year. Thank you for bring back a fond memory of all that sadly does no longer exist in my world. I wish I had at least one of the many photos my now late Mom had taken. This? This helps me visualize it again though 🤗😘

Did the final details ever emerge regarding what this car started as? Someone said the trim tag looked like a '69. That, together with the ZL-1 engine is intriguing. Escaped ZL-1 test mule? Or, if the car is truly a '71, I believe those heads were also used on '71 LS-6 Corvettes...
Endless possibilities for a part swapping racer. A thorough investigation should reveal much. If VIN tag is gone, partial VIN should be on frame.

Story of a Shelby Mustang and a Shelby Maverick in N. Va. Manassas area. Father worked as a body man for a local Ford dealership collected them during the gas crunch in the 70's. The Mustang was a Trade in. Needed a rear 1/4 panel. He bought it , got the 1/4 into prime and sat on it. Drove it once in a while around the neighborhood just to keep thinks working. When he past away, the family had to redo the home owners Insurance. Needed to up the Insurance on the garage becouse of the Shelby. They showed him the car, he gave an estimated value of the mustang and what they should insure the Garage for. They were taken back at what the Shelby was worth. The Insurance guy explained how Rare and Expensive Shelby's were. Hearing that they asked about another car covered up in the Garage. It was a Shelby Maverick from Mexico. The Insurance guy told them to double the Value of the Shelby.
Never seen them, but talked to plenty locals that used to see the guy drive it around the neighborhood. Now his Son does from what I understand.

I use to watch this car race at Tompkinsville Kentucky and I think it raced at beach bend at Bowling Green Kentucky . I don't thank the car is famous the guy just said things that were not true, the car was not a rag top as he said. It was a good looking car but not fast enough to win the the race at a very small track. But it was something see a corvette pulling a corvette. If you look the photo of the car pulling the wheels in the lower right hand of the sign it has Kentucky on it. If I remember right the car was out of Louisville Ky. This was the early 70's . The two men look like they were in their 50's. The car ran two or three years around here . The car had to have more than 24 miles as he said in video.

Its a drag car, it only goes down a 1/4 mile track; its not going to have 100,000 miles on it. All I had to do was look at the thumbnail to figure out the car's story.

A 40 plus year old car with a paint code that doesn't match the present paint color - who would have ever thought? Wrong color is not exactly a "red flag" moment. My last Corvette was black when I bought it and had previously been painted 5 different colors - it was less than 15 years old. The paint job was crappy and flaking off when I got it, making it easy to tell that each new color had been painted over the last. As a coincidence to this video, the Corvette I had before the black one came new in Safari Yellow and was Red when I bought it. A later owner restored it to it's original color. The red was much prettier. Now if we were talking about Daytona Yellow, my opinion would be different.

Very interesting story. Experts can be wrong. But there are cars that have been faked because of high prices. I was told of a local Corvette owner who claimed his 67 small block came from the factory with a big block stinger hood. He was the original owner. He said that it was delivered from the dealer with the stinger hood. Many said it must have been the dealer who installed the hood. He refuted that claim. Then some said it must have been installed at the factory when they ran out of small block hoods. An ex GM St. Louis plant supervisor said it was possible but there would be no records to prove that it happened. Short of an ex employee saying this is was happened it could not be proved. It really divided many Corvette people over this. In the end it's an owner saying this is factory and how the car came.
